This desert is believed to be nearly 40 million years old! It is truly an ancient desert.‎ The Namib Desert has some of the world’s biggest sand dunes. The dunes tower high into the sky. One dune, called “Big Daddy”, is almost 1,200 feet (365 meters) high! This means “Big Daddy” is bigger than a 100-story building! People can climb “Big Daddy”. One man climbed to the dune’s crest, or top. Near the crest, the man had to climb on all fours! He had ‎ to use his hands to prevent himself from sliding (滑动) down.‎ The Namib Desert’s ancient dunes vary in color. When something varies, it changes and becomes different. The Namib Desert dunes vary from orange to red.‎ During the day, the surface temperature of the sand dunes heats up. The surface temperature can heat up to ‎54℃‎. What does one lizard(蜥蜴) do to keep its feet cool? It stands on only two feet at a time! It jumps from pair to pair! This allows the feet in the air to cool off. When this isn’t enough, the lizard dives into the sand. It digs down to where the sand is cooler.‎ Little water falls on the dunes. Often there is less than half an inch (1.3 centimeters) of rain a year. What does one dune plant do for water? It uses the morning fog! The fog comes from the Atlantic Ocean nearby, It rolls(滚动) across the dunes. The plant’s leaves are filled with empty spaces. The empty spaces take in droplets(小水珠) of the water. The plant can survive years without rain by taking in the fog droplets.‎ ‎24. What is the Namib Desert most famous for?‎ A. Its old age. B. Its big size. C. Its location. D. Its animals.‎ ‎25. Why does the author mention the man climber?‎ A. To show it is fun to climb dunes.‎ B. To show the popularity of “Big Daddy”.‎ C. To show “Big Daddy” is the highest dune.‎ D. To show the difficulty of climbing “Big Daddy”.‎ ‎26. How does a lizard in the Namib Desert deal with the heat?‎ A. It touches the sand with as little of its body as possible.‎ B. It keeps jumping from one cool place to another.‎ C. It jumps as high as possible into the air.‎ D. It stays inside the sand the whole day.‎ ‎27. What can we learn from the last paragraph?‎ A. The dune plant lives on the rain. ‎ B. It rains often in the Namib Desert.‎ C. The Namib Desert is a coastal desert.‎ D. Plants can seldom be seen on most dunes.‎ C Walking while using a phone has become more and more common. And that’s a problem. Between 2000 and 2011, distracted walking led to more than 11,000 injuries in the U.S.‎ In 2017, Taylor Fujimoto and her classmates decided to take action. The teens were students at Waipahu High School in Honolulu, Hawaii. They did research, shared their views with others, and went to meetings with city leaders. And in fall 2017, Honolulu became the first major U.S. city to ban crossing the street while looking at a phone.‎ Now other cities might do the same. Should yours be one of them?‎ Distracted walking may not seem like a big deal. You’re just looking at your phone for a moment, right? But studies show that our brains can’t pay attention to our phones and what’s going on around us at the same time. People who are texting and walking are four times more likely to do something risky, like crossing the street without looking.‎ Some people say that banning texting and walking goes too far. But others point out that most people didn’t wear seat belts until they had to by law. These laws have saved lives. Taylor says the same is true for texting and walking. Laws are needed to make people stop.‎ Still, there are other ways to deal with this problem. People are working on an app that would warn you when you near a crosswalk. In London, lamp posts(路灯杆) have been covered in padding(衬垫) to protect people who run into them while texting.‎ Distracted walking might soon be banned in your town. Or it might not. Either way, be careful. The next time you’re walking and your phone buzzes(嗡嗡响), think before you look. Is a text really worth risking your safety?‎ ‎28. What can we say about crossing the street in Honolulu while looking at a phone?‎ A. It is legally permitted now.‎ B. It is considered as an illegal act now.‎ C. It has caused a widespread discussion.‎ D. It has caused more than 11,000 injuries.‎ ‎29. What is Taylor’s attitude towards the law that Honolulu passed in fall 2017?‎ A. Worried B. Doubtful C. Surprised D. Supportive ‎30. How does London deal with distracted walking?‎ A. By putting a law in force.‎ B. By using padded lamp posts.‎ C. By suggesting the use of a phone app.‎ D. By reducing the number of crosswalks.‎ ‎31.What does the author think is necessary?‎ A. Passing a law against distracted walking.‎ B. Avoiding running through a crosswalk.‎ C. Using phones as little as possible.‎ D. Stopping texting while walking.‎ D With temperatures set to rise this week, the LNP(a party for all Queenslanders) has once again rolled out its plan to air-condition every state school classroom.‎ ‎“There are children and teachers sweltering in classrooms with no air-conditioning,” the LNP’s leader Deb Frecklington said. “How can children possibly learn and how can teachers teach in these conditions? This is all part of our plan to make Queensland kids the smartest in the nation. Cool kids are smart kids.”‎ It’s a nice idea and I’m sure kids and teachers will be happy if the classroom is a little cooler, but in my opinion, surely there are more important areas where the government can first spend money when it comes to education. Especially here in Queensland, where let’s face it, there are very few days, especially in the most populated areas, where the temperatures top 35 degrees.‎ Plus, kids are kids. You’d have a hard task stopping them from running around the playground during break times on a 30-plus degrees day.‎ Should we ban physical education classes in summer for fear that our kids will get too hot? And what message are we sending if we don’t let our kids put up with a few warmer days each year?‎ I still remember the hottest day I experienced while at school. The temperature topped 46 degrees and we spent the day lying on the classroom floor with the fans going. But that was one day in 12 years when I remember ever being bothered by the temperature.‎ Plus, there are plenty of jobs out there that require people to work outdoors in the heat and creating an illusion(错觉) that we can only function at a temperature of 20 degrees day in, day out is not something we should be teaching our kids in any classroom.‎ ‎32. What does the underlined word “sweltering” in Paragraph 2 mean?‎ A. Studying. B. Competing. C. Feeling very hot. D. Feeling very sleepy.‎ ‎33. What may teachers and students think of the cool school plan?‎ A. They doubt it. B. They welcome it.‎ C. They are strongly against it. D. They think it is a waste of money.‎ ‎34. What did the author try to show by mentioning the hottest day he experienced?‎ A. Kids can stay inside on hot days.‎ B. Kids care little about hot weather.‎ C. There is a need for air-conditions.‎ D. There are few extremely hot days in Queensland.‎ ‎35. What does the author think kids should learn to do?‎ A. Love hot days. B. Live with heat. C. Do outdoor jobs. D. Pay attention in class.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每题2.5分,满分12.5分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Everyone knows that dental hygiene(牙齿保健) is important. 36 However, as kids grow up and become more independent, it’s easier to forget about dental hygiene.‎ For many young people, the morning routine(常规) includes brushing your teeth and eating breakfast. Bethany Tistle, a dental hygienist, suggests brushing after you eat. “ 37 Once after breakfast, and once before bed,” she says.‎ Brushing after meals gives you a chance to remove food that could get stuck between your teeth. Flossing(用牙线洁牙) every day is also important.‎ Many kids may wonder whether they should use a manual or an electric toothbrush. 38 “It has a built-in, two-minute timer, which keeps you brushing the proper amount of time,” she says, “Most people only spend 30 seconds when they’re using a manual toothbrush. That’s not enough time.”‎ Smart food choices are also important for your teeth. Sugary snacks and even carbonated water can be bad for your teeth. Tistle suggests using a straw(吸管) when drinking sugary drinks.‎ Dairy products and foods that are crunchy(硬而脆的), such as apples and carrots, are good for your teeth. But Tistle advises against eating foods that are sticky. 39 Bits of food can get stuck in your teeth and create holes in them.‎ In order to ensure that you have a healthy mouth, visit the dentist at least twice a year. ‎ Brush and floss daily. 40 As Tistle says, “Dental hygiene is in the hands of the patient.”‎ A. And make healthy food choices.‎ B. Are you taking care of your teeth?‎ C. You should brush your teeth after each meal.‎ D. Either one works, but Tistle prefers the latter.‎ E. Brushing should be done at least twice a day.‎ F. Some examples are fruit snacks and certain candies.‎ G. When children are very young, adults often help them take care of their teeth.‎ 第三部分: 语言知识运用(共两节,满分45分)‎ 第一节(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。‎ Our school lunch menu needs a makeover.
