They hired a reliable woman to care for their children and returned home a little earlier than they had planned. As they drove into their hometown, they found a home on fire. After having a look, Mary said, “Oh, well, it isn’t our fire. Let’s go home. ” But John drove closer and said. “That home belongs to Fred Jones who wouldn't be off work yet. Maybe there is something we could do. " John noticed an old lady screamed to him, “The children! Get the children!” John grabbed (抓住) her by the shoulder saying, “Get a hold of yourself and tell us where the children are!” “In the basement, ”cried the lady. In spite of Mary’s disagreement, John soaked(浸湿)his clothes and ran to the basement which was full of smoke. He found the door and grabbed two children As he left he could hear some more cry. He sent the two badly frightened children into the waiting room and asked how many more children were down there. They told him two more and Mary grabbed his arm and screamed. "John! Don't go back! It's dangerous! That house will fall down in any second!" But he shook her off and went back. It seemed a very long time before he found both children and started back. As he climbed up the endless steps the thought went through his mind that there was something strangely familiar about the little bodies next to him, and at last when they came out into the sunlight and fresh air, he found that he had just rescued his own children. Then, suddenly, the interviewer asks an unexpected question,“Which is more important, law or Dove?” Job applicants in the West increasingly find themselves asked strange questions like this. And the signs are that this is beginning to happen in China. Employers want people skilled, enthusiastic and devoted. So these are the qualities that any reasonably intelligent job applicants will try to show no matter what his or her actual feelings are. In response, employers are increasingly using questions which try and show the applicant’s true personality. The question in the first paragraph comes from a test called the Keirsey Personality Sorter. It is an attempt to discover how people solve problems, rather than what they know. This is often called an aptitude test (能力倾向测验). According to Mark Baldwin many job applicants in China are finding this type of questions difficult. When a Chinese person fills out an aptitude test , he or she will think there is a right answer and they may fail because they try to guess what the examiner wants to see. This is sometimes called the prisoner’s dilemma.Applicants are trying to act cleverly in their own interest. But they fail because they don’t understand what the interviewer is looking for.Remember that in an aptitude test, the correct answer is always the honest answer. 29.The writer wrote the passage to________. A.give you a piece of advice on a job interview B.tell you how to meet a job interviewer C.describe the aptitude test D.advice you how to find a job 30.Why do the interviewers ask such questions? A.They want to discover what the interviewees know. B.They are curious about the answers. C.They try to discover the ability of the interviewees solving problems. D.They just ask questions without thinking much. 31.According to the writer,in an aptitude test,Chinese job applicants should________. A.not tell the truth B.learn to tell what they really think C.be more enthusiastic D.try to find out what the examiner really want to know D A recent study led by researchers from the National University of Singapore(NUS) has found a clear link between the color of a taxi and its accident rate. An analysis of 36 months of detailed taxi, driver and accident data from two fleets of yellow and blue taxis in Singapore suggested that yellow taxis have fewer accidents than blue taxis. The higher visibility (能见度)of yellow makes it easier for drivers to avoid getting into accidents with yellow taxis, leading to a lower accident rate. The study was led by Prof Ho. To test whether there was a causal relationship between the color of a taxi and the number of accidents the taxi had, the research team analysed data collected by the largest taxi company in Singapore. The researchers found that yellow taxis have about 6.1 fewer accidents per 1,000 taxis per month. The researchers also studied the economic effect of changing the color of the entire fleet of taxis to yellow. The Singapore taxi company involved in the study owns about 16,700 taxis in a ratio(比例) of one yellow to three blue taxis. If a commercial decision is made to switch from blue to yellow taxis, 76.6 fewer accidents would occur per month or 917 fewer accidents per year. Assuming an average repair cost of S$1,000 per car and a downtime of six days, switching the color of all taxis to yellow could produce an annual savings of S$2 million. “We are eager to continue to validate(证实) the findings of our study by looking at the use of yellow in other types of public transport, such as school buses. For instance, we hope to compare the accident rates of yellow school buses against other colors to find out if yellow is indeed a safer color for school buses. Besides, we are also interested to look at private-hire vehicles and do a comparison of the accident rates of vehicles that are of different colors,” explained Prof Ho. 32. Why do yellow taxis result in fewer accidents? A. Because yellow can be seen more easily B. Because yellow signals a warning of danger C. Because drivers tend to be more careful in yellow taxis D. Because people act more quickly in yellow surroundings 33. What’s Prof Ho’s study based on? A. Physical risks taxi passengers experience B. The economic effect of changing taxi color C. Data from Singapore’s largest taxi company D. Personal reports from taxi drivers worldwide 34. What do Prof Ho’s words in the last paragraph suggest? A. School buses should be painted yellow B. Their findings are worth popularizing C. Yellow should be widely used in public transport D. Their study will be furthered 35. What can be the best taxis for the text? A. Caution: yellow taxis ahead B. Safer to ride in yellow taxis C. Why are yellow taxis preferred? D. How can colors help prevent accidents? 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Do you feel a little guilty about your daily nap(小睡)after lunch? Don’t. Research shows that catching a short nap can be good for your brain.___36___ While a 30-to-90-minute nap in older adults appears to have brain benefits, anything longer than an hour and a half may create problems with cognition(认知), the ability to think and form memories, according to the study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. “___37___But it is related to one’s sleep cycles and quality,” says Charlene Gamaldo, M. D. , medical director of Johns Hopkins Sleep Disorders Center. “As the study showed, for older people, longer naps tend to interfere(妨碍)with cognition,” she says. ___38___Nearly 60 percent of participants reported napping after lunch for about an hour. Scientists found that people who napped for 20 to 90 minutes have a better memory than people who did not nap, or who napped for longer than 90 minutes. People who napped for 30 to 90 minutes were also better at figure drawing, another sign of good cognition. One theory explains poor cognition in those who take longer naps. ___39___“In the study, naps longer than 90 minutes could have been called ‘a second sleep’. This poor quality nighttime sleep, which requires extra-long napping during the day, can lead to cognitive problems,” Gamaldo adds. According to Gamald, longer naps can cause a couple of other problems, including temporary grogginess(眩晕无力)and inability to sleep at night. ___40___As a result, “People need to get the right quantity and quality of rest,” says Gamaldo. A. I consider napping to be a good thing. B. But it is the length of your nap that matters. C. Generally speaking, the older one gets, the longer naps one needs. D. Researchers looked at data from 2,974 people in China aged 65 and older. E. Resting more during the day may be a sign of poor quality nighttime sleep. F. Taking long naps during the day makes it difficult for one to fall asleep at night. G. Overall, studies show that people who sleep too much or too little may have poor health. 第三节 (共20小题;每题1.5分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 One day an expert was speaking to a group of business students.
