A The first harvest means the death of the crops as grain is gathered, and the thanksgiving of the people to the goddesses who provided them with life sustaining grains. Late July and early August mark the middle of summer and the beginning of the harvest season. Famine (饥荒) was common during July as the previous year’s harvest supplies were almost totally used up. Harvesting grains in August ensured the continuance of life and was recognized by many cultures as a time of thanksgiving. In ancient Rome the grain goddess Ceres was honored on the first harvest called Ceresalia in her honor. Our modern word cereal comes from her name. Other goddesses celebrated at the first harvest were Demeter, Persephone, Venus and the Corn Mother. Many native American tribes honor the Corn Grandmother during the Festival of Green Corn. It was held during the full moon when the corn was ready to be harvested. The celebration lasted for several days and was a time to be thankful and a time of forgiveness. Lughnasadh was a happy time regarded as the first of three harvest festivals. Lughnasadh honors the god Lugh, and his foster-mother Taillte who died while clearing the fields of Ireland for agriculture. In Old Irish Lunasa means “August”. The Celts celebrate this day from sunset of August 1 to sunset on August 2 as the wake of Lugh, the Sun-King whose light began to decline after the summer solstice(夏至). At_this_time_oaths(誓言)_were_taken_and_contracts_were_signed. This day was known to the Saxons as Lammas, or loaf-mass, a time when grains were harvested and baked into bread. The grain was harvested, giving its life so that people might live. The grain was made into bread, and the bread was symbolic of the gods. Christians later adopted this holiday as a day when bread, made from the first fruits of the harvest, was brought to the church to be blessed. August is a time to reflect on the past year, on things that have come to fruition and things that failed. A time to let go of regrets and say farewell to things that have passed and preserve all the fruits that have been gathered to hold onto for future memories. 5.The passage should be entitled ______. A. August Harvest Festivals B. August Tradition C. Gathering Grain D. Special August Time 6.What was the significance of harvesting grains in August? A. It welcomed the death of the crops. B. It provided the chance of thanksgiving. C. It guaranteed the continuance of life. D. It marked the middle of summer. 7.Which of the following is NOT a close relationship according to the passage? A. Ancient Romans-the grain goddess Ceres. B. Native Americans-the Corn Grandmother. C. Christians-the god Lugh and his foster-mother Taillte. D. The Celts-Lugh, the Sun-King. 8.From the last sentence of the 4th paragraph “At this time oaths were taken and contracts were signed”, we can infer that the Celts are ______. A. happy at that time B. serious about the day C. are full of hope D. thankful at that time 5.A. B Do you like sitting on the edge of your seat? How about falling off it laughing? If so, “Rush Hour 2” is the perfect movie for you. Although it didn’t get the best reviews, it is perfect for those who like a good comedy. Just as in the first “Rush Hour,” inspector Lee(Jackie Chan) and LAPD detective James Carter(Chris Tucker) are partners. This time, they are on vacation in China and Carter is looking for a good time, but they are on the job again when a bombing at the American Embassy kills two customs agents. Lee and Carter go to look for a suspect named Ricky Tan. For Lee this is a serious case because Tan killed his father. Will Carter and Lee be able to capture Tan? Another reason to see this movie perhaps is for the thrilling action, which includes karate fights with Jackie Chan. One of my favorite scenes shows Carter and Lee in a massage parlor(店堂) when everything goes crazy. “Rush Hour 2” is, of course, really funny with Chris Tucker in the lead role. Chan and Tucker have many clever jokes and remarks. Some of the jokes aren’t enjoyed by the critics, but most will find them entertaining. With no doubt, the movie was great. I was filled with anxiety about what was going to happen next. Many critics say that sequels(续集) are not as good as the original but this one is great. I especially enjoyed it because the special effects are minimal so everything looks as though it actually happened. The lighting effect is great as well as the sound. So, if you are looking for a great action movie that leaves you at the edge of your seat and makes you laugh quite a bit, you should rush to see “Rush Hour 2”. 1.According to the author, “Rush Hour 2” is a perfect movie particularly ______. A. full of special effects B. with the best actors C. full of humors D. with great lights 2.In “Rush Hour 2”, the two leading roles are on duty again because ______. A. their vacation in China is limited to a short time B. inspector Lee doesn’t want to have a good time C. the American Embassy in China was attacked D. a suspect named Ricky Tan killed Lee’s father 3.In Rush Hour series, the following are usually included EXCEPT ______. A. thrilling actions B. maximal special effects C. karate fights D. clever jokes and remarks 4.If “Rush Hour 3” is shot, what kind of movie will it be? A. Stage tragedy B. Action movie C. Soap opera D. Situational comedy C DNA(Deoxyribonucleic acid)is one of the most important discoveries in science. DNA is the plan for the human being, as a blueprint is the plan for a building. DNA makes a person look the way he does. A person’s DNA comes from a mixing of his parents’ DNA. That’s why a child looks like his parents. But, besides controlling things such as height and hair color, DNA can also give people diseases. Scientists are now studying DNA to cure diseases. In the seventies, scientists developed a process called recombinant (重新组合) or RDNA. Although it sounds difficult to understand, RDNA simply means taking DNA from one animal or plant and putting it into another. By doing so, scientists can create new beings. In so doing, scientists can better understand DNA, especially what parts of DNA do what. After they understand DNA, scientists can begin to cure diseases. Often, the new being created will itself be the cure. Besides curing diseases, RDNA research can also do other things. For example, scientists in Japan have already created “super-trees”. Trees help humans, because they take CO2, which poisons humans, from the air and turn it into oxygen, which lets humans breathe. “Super-trees” do this too, but do it much faster. As things such as cars and factories have already put much CO2 in the area, “super-trees” are badly needed. Unfortunately, there is a serious danger in RDNA research. Scientists want to create animals to cure old diseases, but these new animals may also create new diseases. It will be a serious problem if the animals escape from the science laboratory and into nature. As these animals are not natural, they may let_loose many new powerful diseases. As a result, RDNA research will create many solutions(解决方案), but it will also create many problems. 5.From the passage, we can know that a boy looks like his parents because ______. A. he is son of his parents B. his parents’ DNA decides his appearance C. he has received DNA from his father or his mother D. scientists have put some of his parents’ DNA into him 6.What does the underlined expression “let loose” probably mean? A. let...go free B. get rid of C. absorb D. survive 7.What is the best title for the passage? A. The DAN Research in Japan. B. A New Way of DNA Research in Japan. C. The Causes and Effects of DNA Research. D. The Advantages and Disadvantages of RDNA. 8.The following statements are true about RDNA research EXCEPT ______. A. the research has been stopped because the created animals carry viruses B. “super-trees” might be widely planted around the world C. scientists have not completely understood DNA D. RDNA research will benefit human beings a lot 由第二段第二句:“This time, they are..., but they are on the job again...” 6.A. 8.A. D The New York City Marathon was started by a man named Fred Lebow. It began in 1970 as a small, unimportant race. Only 127 people ran, and just 55 of them finished. They ran around Central Park four times. Few people watched them run. However, over the years the marathon grew and became more popular. Today people come from all over the world to run in the marathon. Runners must be at least 18 years old, but there is no age limit. In fact, the oldest runner was an 89-year-old man. Recently more than 27,000 people ran in the New York City Marathon. Large crowds cheered the runners and offered the participants cold drinks and encouragement. The course of the marathon has changed, too. Instead of running around Central Park, the participants go through the five boroughs(自治区) of New York City: Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island. The marathon begins at the base of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge in Staten Island. The runners go across the bridge into Brooklyn. Then they go up through Queens and into the Bronx. The marathon finishes in Central Park in Manhattan. The complete course is 26 miles, 385 yards and takes the best runners less than 3 hours. Although it has changed since 1970, the New York City Marathon is always exciting. Through the years, many unusual events have happened during the marathon. For example, Pat Tuz and John Weilbaker got married a few minutes before the race. Then they ran the race with their wedding party. Some people run the whole marathon as a family. Other people run the race backwards. In the fall of 1992, Fred Lebow, the founder of the New York City Marathon, slowly ran his last race. He was very ill with cancer, but he did not want to stop running. In October 1994, Fred died. However, the New York City Marathon, and all its excitement, will continue for many years to come. 1.How many runners didn’t finish the first New York City Marathon? A. 55. B. 27. C. 72. D. 70. 2.Which of the following statements is NOT true? A. The crowds offered the participants cold drinks and encouragement. B. Fred Lebow ran the Marathon in 1992, though he was ill with cancer. C. It takes the best runners more than three hours to finish the whole race. D. Pat Tuz and John Weilbaker ran the race after they got married. 3.The order of the five boroughs of the New York City Marathon the participants go through is ______. A. Queens→Brooklyn→Manhattan→the Bronx→Staten Island B. Staten Island→Brooklyn→the Bronx→Manhattan→Queens C. Manhattan→Staten Island→Queens→the Bronx→Brooklyn D. Staten Island→Brooklyn→Queens→the Bronx→Manhattan 4.What is the main idea of this passage? A. The New York City Marathon began in 1970. B. The founder of the New York City Marathon was an important man. C. The New York City Marathon is a very popular and exciting race. D. Many unusual events happened during the marathon. E On August 26, 1999, New York City experienced a torrential downpour. The merciless rain caused the streets to flood. New York City’s subway system came to a screeching stop as the subway stations were drowned in water. Unfortunately, this happened during the morning rush hour. Many people who were going to work were trapped and forced to go home. Some battled with fellow New Yorkers to hail a cab or to get on a bus. Still others braved the storm, walking miles to get to work. I happened to be one of the people on their way to work that morning. I went from subway line to subway line only to find that most service had stopped. After running around like crazy and making my way through crowds of people, I finally found a subway line that was operating. Unfortunately, there were so many people waiting to board the subway that I could not even get down the stairs to the platform. Determined to get to work, I decided to take the train uptown several stops and then switch back to the downtown train. It was annoyance, but it paid off. However, the train got more packed at each stop. People pushed and shoved. I was constantly hit with elbows and bags. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity (no end), the train reached my stop. But the journey was not over yet. I would still have to walk several blocks to get to my office. When I finally got to work, I was completely soaked and left a puddle of water everywhere I sat. I was also exhausted (tired out) and discouraged from my commute. My co-workers and I spent most of the day drying off. When 5:00 rolled around, I was ready to go home. I was about to log off my computer when I received an e-mail from Garth, my Deputy Director: I would like to thank all those who made the effort and eventually reported to work. It is always reassuring, at times like these, when employees so clearly show their devotion to their jobs. Thank you. His e-mail was short, but I learned more from that brief message than I ever did from a textbook. The e-mail taught me that a few words of appreciation can make a big difference. The rainstorm and the transit troubles had made me miserable. But Garth’s words immediately invigorated me and put a smile back on my face. As a matter of fact, his e-mail made the whole subway painful experience all worthwhile. August 26, 1999 may have been one of the darkest days in New York City history, but it was one of the brightest days in my life thanks to Garth. 5.The subway system in NY came to a sudden stop because ______. A. most of its service had stopped B. it was flooded by busy travelers C. it was during a morning rush hour D. its stations were covered with water 6.How did the writer get to her office? A. By pushing in the stairs to the platform. B. By switching trains in a roundabout way. C. By battling with people to hail a taxi. D.
