The Making of a Warrior B One of my favorite reading aloud memories is my mother’s reading the Little House on the Prairie books to me.I loved those books. The coziness(舒适) of their lives in spite of so much hardship and hard work, and the closeness of the family life always made me so happy.‎ ‎ During my many years as an educator, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the effects of reading aloud. Like my own memories, reading aloud delivers a deep comfort for a child. In stories, they find a safe place to return to,and tools to enjoy life. Books provide a risk-free environment to deal with the world’s big questions.‎ ‎ Reading aloud makes you and your child co-explorers. It develops a child’s relationship with literature and cultivates critical thinking. She will begin to build connections, and apply her mental dexterity(灵巧) to real life. When faced with hardship, she will call upon these skills and the knowledge to find a solution.‎ ‎ World Read Aloud Day, which takes place on the first Wednesday in March every year, is an opportunity for everyone to honor and share that power. Since LitWorld launched this campaign only four years ago, WRAD has spread over 100 countries. The number of people around the world who cannot read or write is just below 800 million. There is an urgent need to invest in education to keep our world benefiting from hundreds ‎ of millions of stories.‎ ‎ It’s time to take a big step. And so, we are asking the global community to “Read It Forward”.Read it forward by reading aloud to anyone who might like it, share a book with a child who might need it, share a story with someone who would treasure it, listen to someone else’s as they share with you: give the gift of story magic away in any way you can.‎ ‎4.What can we know from Paragraph2 and 3?‎ A. B.To encourage people to share stories C.To introduce World Read Aloud Day D.To show the advantages of reading aloud C There are around 6,000 living languages in the world and at least half of these are in danger. In every part of the world, languages are disappearing. In fact, one scientist has said that languages are in more danger of extinction than birds or mammals. Professor Steve Sutherland of the University of East Anglia says that in the past500years4.5percent of languages have died out---compared with 1.3percent of birds, and 1.9percent of mammals.‎ Languages come and go, and thousands have done exactly that without leaving any trace. Only a very few---Basque, Greek and Latin among them---have lasted more than 2,000years. But it seems that the pace of their disappearance is becoming quicker.‎ Languages may be lost through migration(迁移),as people move from small towns to city centers, or when environments are destroyed by the search for oil or wood. Natural disasters can also devastate populations, and along with them, their language. Government also play a role in the extinction of languages. The need to establish“official languages”,for a country to educate its children and carry out its business , had a disastrous effect on many small languages. ‎ What is lost if a language is lost? Some people argue that language die as the human race develops. Obviously there could be great benefits if everyone in the world spoke the same language---some industries already reflect this, with English essential for pilots and air traffic controllers. But there are more important things than convenience. As languages are lost, whole ways of life and knowledge may be lost along with them.‎ To put it simply, language expresses something about identity, about our place in the world. Ani Rauhihi, a Maori teacher in New Zealand’s North Island, sums it up:“if you grow up speaking our language, you won’t know who you are.”‎ ‎8. What do the figures mentioned in paragraph1suggest?‎ A. Most languages have died out completely.‎ B. Languages are in great danger of extinction.‎ C. Animals are disappearing faster than languages.‎ D. Languages are disappearing slower than before ‎9.The underlined word“devastate”can be replaced by “____”.‎ A. increase B. control C. destroy D. improve ‎10. If a language is lost, ______.‎ A. there will be great trouble.‎ B. there is no need to worry about it.‎ C. its culture and knowledge will also be lost.‎ D. people will be able to communicate with others conveniently.‎ ‎11. What can we infer from the last paragraph?‎ A. Languages reflect our identity.‎ B. People will speak the same language one day.‎ C. Fewer people will remember their own languages.‎ D. Ani Rauhihi cares less about languages dying out.‎ D ‎ Depression is second most common cause of disability worldwide after back pain, according to a review of research. The disease must be treated as a global public health priority(优先权), experts report in the journal PLOS Medicine. The study compared clinical depression with more than 200 other diseases and injuries as a cause of disability. Globally, only a small part of patients have opportunities to be treated, the World Health Organization says.‎ ‎ Depression was ranks at number two as a global cause disability, but its effects varies in different countries and regions. For example, rates of major depression were highest in Afghanistan and lowest in Japan.‎ ‎ Dr. Alize Ferrari from the University of Queensland’s School of Population Health led the study. “Depression is a big problem and we definitely need to pay more attention to it than we are now,” she told BBC news. “There’s still more work to be done in terms of awareness the disease and also coming up with successful ways of treating it. The burden is different between countries, so it tends to be higher in low and middle income countries and lower in high income countries. Policy-makers had made an effort to bring depression to the forefront, but there was a lot more work to be done.”‎ ‎“There’s lots of stigma(恶名) we know related to mental health,” Dr. Alize Ferrari explained. “What one person recognize as disabling might be different to another person and might be different across countries as well. There are lots of cultural effects and explanations that come in place, which makes it all the more important to raise awareness of the size of the problem and how to find depression.”‎ ‎ The data---for the years 2010---follows similar studies in 1990 and 2000looking at the global burden of depression. Commenting on the study, Dr. Daniel Chisholm, a health economist at the department for mental health and substance abuse at the WHO said depression was a very disabling condition.‎ ‎“It’s a big public health challenge and a big problem to be thought but not enough ‎ is being done. Around the world only a tiny part of people get any sort of treatment or diagnosis.” Dr. Daniel Chisholm said.‎ ‎ The WHO recently launched a global mental health action plan to raise awareness of depression among policy-makers.‎ 12.
