World Read Aloud Day, which takes place on the first Wednesday in March every year, is an opportunity for everyone to honor and share that power. In every part of the world, languages are disappearing. In fact, one scientist has said that languages are in more danger of extinction than birds or mammals. Professor Steve Sutherland of the University of East Anglia says that in the past500years4.5percent of languages have died out---compared with 1.3percent of birds, and 1.9percent of mammals. Languages come and go, and thousands have done exactly that without leaving any trace. Only a very few---Basque, Greek and Latin among them---have lasted more than 2,000years. The disease must be treated as a global public health priority(优先权), experts report in the journal PLOS Medicine. The study compared clinical depression with more than 200 other diseases and injuries as a cause of disability. Globally, only a small part of patients have opportunities to be treated, the World Health Organization says. For example, rates of major depression were highest in Afghanistan and lowest in Japan. The burden is different between countries, so it tends to be higher in low and middle income countries and lower in high income countries.
