In order to have friends, you have to be a friend. But how can you be a good friend at school?‎ ‎ Listen — Listen when they are talking. Don’t say anything unless they ask you a question. Sometimes it’s not necessary for you to have anything to say; they just need someone to talk to about their feelings. ‎ ‎ Help them — If your friend is ever in need of something, be there to help them. You should try to put them first, but make sure you don’t do everything they want you to do. Try to take an extra (额外的) pencil or pen with you to classes in case (以防) they forget one. Have a little extra money in your pocket in case they forget something they need. ‎ ‎ Be there for them — Try to make something for your friend to help make them feel better in hard times. Making cards and encouraging them are among the nicest things you can do for a friend. Marilyn Monroe, a famous U.S. actor, once said, “I often make mistakes. Sometimes I am out of control. But if you can’t stay with me at my worst, you are sure not to deserve (值得) to be with me at my best.” Always remember this! If you don’t want to stay with your friends when they’re in hard times, then you don’t deserve to be with them when they’re having a good time!‎ ‎ ______ — Try to make plans with your friends. Go shopping, go for ice cream, have a party, go to a movie and so on. Take time to know each other even better by - 12 -‎ ‎ doing something you both enjoy. By planning things together, you both can have a good time. And you’ll remember these things when you’re all old!‎ ‎1. While your friend is talking to you about his or her feelings, you should _____.‎ A. give him or her some advice B. just listen unless asked C. calm him or her down D. share your feelings as well ‎2. What can we learn from Marilyn Monroe’s words?‎ A. Life without a friend is death.‎ B. A friend is easier lost than found.‎ C. A friend in need is a friend indeed.‎ D. Play with your friends.‎ B I climbed Kilimanjaro with Lava Expeditions (探险队) during the rainy season.‎ ‎ I flew to Nairobi in Kenya and spent several days there. At my hotel in Nairobi I met the rest of the group with whom I would spend the next week. We all travelled on the bus together for a 6-hour journey into Tanzania and then Arusha, a quiet town. ‎ ‎ After we arrived at our hotel in Arusha, we had dinner and a few drinks. Then we were introduced to more members including Taddeus Minja, the main guide, who was very experienced — climbing Kilimanjaro runs through the generations (代) of his family.‎ ‎ The next day the Lava Expeditions members checked if we had the correct and enough clothing for our expedition on Kilimanjaro. Only one person needed to bring more clothes. ‎ - 12 -‎ ‎ After that we set off, walking in the rain through the beauty of the rainforest, all the way to the first camp. I was happy the next few days as the view was so wonderful and changed every day. I suffered a little during the trip and I felt so tired. But the members of Lava Expeditions provided me with lots of encouragement, which was one of the best memories. Finally we reached the top of Kilimanjaro in bright blue skies. ‎ ‎ I felt excited about climbing Kilimanjaro and the feeling didn’t change during my trip. Lava Expeditions looked after me so well that I was deeply thankful for their help.‎ ‎4. How did the author get to Nairobi?‎ A. By bus. B. By train. C. By air. D. On foot.‎ ‎5. What do we know about Taddeus Minja according to the passage?‎ A. He organized the journey.‎ B. He was the leader of Lava Expeditions.‎ C. He was the manager of a hotel in Arusha.‎ D. He had much knowledge about climbing mountains.‎ ‎6. How did Lava Expeditions help the author while climbing Kilimanjaro?‎ A. By carrying bags for him. ‎ B. By offering food to him.‎ C. To give readers advice on climbing Kilimanjaro.‎ C. To encourage more people to climb Kilimanjaro.‎ D. To share his experience of climbing Kilimanjaro.‎ C ‎“Hello” is a relatively new greeting. It first appeared sometime in the mid-1800s, but many people would not have dreamed of using it. “Hello” was considered ‎ - 12 -‎ a very impolite way to greet someone. Instead, people used formal expressions like “How do you do?”   ‎ Back then, there were several words that sounded like “hello,” but they were used to get someone’s attention or to express surprise. For example, if you caught your little brother stealing your snack, you might have said, “Halloa there! Stop eating my cheese!” If you found a fly in your soup, you might have shouted, “Hullo! How did that get in there?”‎ Everything started to change in 1876, when Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. The first telephones didn’t have numbers you could dial, nor did they have bells or ringers. Instead, your telephone sent signals along telephone lines to a central office where an operator would answer by saying something like “Are you there, sir?” or “What is wanted?” The operator would then connect your phone to the phone of the person you wanted to reach. There was just one small problem: Since telephones didn’t ring, how would the person you were calling know that you were “on the line”? The answer is you would yell (大喊) into your phone and hope someone on the other end heard you. But what would you yell? And what would the person you were calling say when they were going to answer? Bell suggested “Ahoy! Ahoy!” but it didn’t catch on. Then the famous inventor Thomas Edison suggested the word hello. That caught on right away.‎ ‎“Hello” became so popular that by 1878 telephone operators were required to use it. In fact, operators received the nickname (绰号) “Hello Girls.” Soon, “hello” became not just the standard way to answer the phone, but an accepted way to greet people in person.‎ ‎8. Why was “hello” seldom used when it first appeared?‎ A. It was too informal.    ‎ B. It was hard to pronounce.      ‎ C. It was considered to be rude.  ‎ D. There were other words like “hello”.‎ ‎9. “Hullo” was used to show something _____.‎ - 12 -‎ A. interesting                    B. exciting          C. boring                  D. unexpected ‎10. Paragraph 3 is mainly about _____.‎ A. how “hello” was used to answer the telephone B. the friendship between Bell and Edison ‎ C. the invention of the telephone D. how the telephone improved ‎11. We can infer from the text that _____.‎ A. “hello” got popular as soon as the telephone was invented ‎ B. the telephone has changed the way people speak C. people liked simple expressions like “hello”‎ D. Bell advised girls to use “hello”‎ D A new book called “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother” by Amy Chua has caused a debate (争论) about cultural differences in parenting. Amy Chua is a teacher in an American university and both of her parents are Chinese. In the book, Ms. Chua writes about how she taught her daughters. She told NBC television that she had a clear list of what her daughters were not allowed to do, such as having a play date, watching TV or playing computer games and getting any grade less than an A.‎ ‎ Many people are against Amy Chua’s parenting style (风格), even her husband, who is American. They say it is rude and unfair to children. But she says her parents raised her and her three sisters in that way.‎ ‎ Ms. Chua says after her younger daughter shouted “I hate my life! I hate you!” she decided to retreat because she was afraid of losing her daughter. But she also says American parents often have low expectations of their children’s abilities. ‎ ‎ “The debate is about what it means to be a successful parent and what it means to be a successful child,” said Stacy DeBroff, who has written four books on parenting. She says Amy Chua’s parenting style is not limited to Chinese families. It is a tradi-tional way of parenting among immigrants (移民). They hope to get a better future - 12 -‎ ‎ for their children.‎ ‎ She also sees a risk (风险). When children have no time to be social or to develop their own interests, they might not develop other skills that they need to succeed in life. DeBroff advises parents to develop their own style of parenting and not just repeat the way they were raised. ‎ ‎12. What do we learn about Amy Chua?‎ A. She has three excellent daughters. ‎ B. She moved to the US at a young age. ‎ C. Her parents live together with her. ‎ D. Her husband dislikes her parenting style.‎ ‎13. The underlined word “retreat” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to _____.‎ A. give up B. go on ‎ C. go out D. give out ‎14. According to Ms. DeBroff, _____.‎ A. Amy Chua’s parenting style should be forbidden B. Americans should learn from Amy Chua C. parents should have their own parenting style D. Amy Chua’s style is bad for children’s growth ‎15.
