It was not until my junior year in high school that I developed an interest, love, and skill for writing poetry. Back in elementary school, I love to write stories. I would write stories on post-it notes and anywhere I could. Yet when I had to write a limerick (五行打油诗)for an assignment, I could not wrap my head around poetry. I had a very hard time figuring out how to rhyme words and have the words make sense. I eventually tossed the paper with the attempted limerick in the trash. I did not try my hand at poetry again until several years later. Many years later in my freshman year of high school, my English teacher gave my class a poetry project as an assignment. I still remember my limerick assignment and was afraid of doing the poetry. For the project, we had to analyze a poem and write a response to it. I choose to respond to Robert Frost’s poem Fire and Ice. I also wrote my own poem first. I become really excited when writing the poem. Two years later, I started writing poetry, as a hobby and for fun. To learn how good or bad my poems were, I handed them in to some magazines and contests. I won second place in the North Carolina Poetry Society’s Sherry Pruitt Award Contest with a poem called The Ocean, and had my two poems published as high merit (优等) poems. I have continued to write poetry, and have even self-published three collections of poetry in both print and e-book formats, which can be found at my store on Lulu. Now, I love writing poetry, but I don’t hate writing short stories. I just find it more difficult and not my style of writing, even though I still write short stories occasionally. 56. When the author was a pupil, he ____. A. liked writing stories B. was good at writing poetry C. could understand poetry well D. was often praised by his teacher 57. When given the poetry project in high school, the author was ______. A. excited B. annoyed C. confident D. worried 58. The author took up writing poetry as a hobby when he ____. A. was in Grade Three in high school B. worked as a storekeeper C. was in Grade One in high school D. was at college 59. How did the author increase his confidence in writing poetry? A. He wrote a lot of poems and asked advice from his teacher B. He published three collections of poetry by himself C. He submitted his poems to magazines contests D. He gave up writing stories and only wrote poetry B. The following are four books that will help you change your mind and change your life. 1) You Can Heal Your Life, Louise Hay:A groundbreaking book when it was released in 1982.It is still the book that I turn to when I have physical unrest that requires deeper understanding.Louise Hay is the pioneer in looking at the connection between the physical unrest that we have in our body and the emotional connection. At the time that she wrote the book many people scoffed at this idea, but it is now widely accepted and millions of people refer to it on a daily basis. 2) The Four Agreements,Don Miguel Ruiz:Maintaining a sense of reliability and faith is developed through understanding according to The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz written in 1997.We are faced with rules and regulations:don’t do this, don’t do that, watch what you are doing,be kind, loyal, faithful, etc.The four agreements represent a simple system of maintaining your own inner authority while practicing being a true person with other people. 3) Slowing Down to the Speed of Life,Richard Carlson and Joseph Bailey:This is a new one in my “bedside collection” and one that has made the biggest impact on me 1ately.Written in 1997, it is even more relevant today than it was when it was written. The idea of “slowing down'’ to get there faster was extremely hard for me to understand. As a human species we seem to enjoy moving fast and expecting quick results, especially from ourselves,I should be successful now in contrast to '‘in the fullness of time" when I am ready. 4) The Game of Life and How to Play it,Florence Scovel-Shinn:A classic book that was first published in 1925 and remains one of my favorite books of all time.Scovel-Shinn understood the power of our words to express either our deepest desires or our most horrible nightmares. So where does this leave you? The way I see it is if you want to “Heal Your Life” then you had better learn how to play “The Game of Life” by learning how to “Slow Down to the Speed of Life” and keep the “Four Agreements",the Solutions may not be easy to do but it is simple. In fact, most solutions are pretty simple, and it is us humans that want to complicate it. 60.According to the author, people who are lacking in personal freedom should read_____. A.You Can Heal Your Life. B.The Four Agreements. C.The Game of Life and How to Play it. D.Slowing Down to the Speed of Life. 61.Which of the following books did the author read most recently? A.You Can Heal Your Life. B.The Four Agreements. C.The Game of Life and How to Play it. D.Slowing Down to the Speed of Life. 62.In the author’s opinion, the four books ____. A.represent four life attitudes. B.represent four stages of life. C.offer four ways to change life and mind. D.tell us four interesting stories. C It is a plain fact that we are in a world where competition is going on in all areas and at all levels. This is exciting.Yet,on the other hand, competition breezes a pragmatic(讲究实际的) attitude.People choose to learn things that are useful, and do things that are profitable.Today’s college education is also affected by this general sense of utilitarianism (功利主义). Many colleges students choose Business,Law not Computer Programming as their majors convinced that these professions are where the big money is.It is not unusual to see the college students taking a part—time job as a warm—up for the real battle.I often see my friends taking GRE tests, working on English or computer certificates and taking the driving tests to get a license.Well,I have nothing against being practical. As the competition in the job market gets more and more severe, students do have reasons to be practical. However,we should never forget that college education is much more than skill training.Just imagine,if your utilitarianism becomes the main trend on campus, leaving no space for the cultivation(培养) of students’ minds,or development of their soul.We will see university is training out well—trained spiritless working machines. If utilitarianism controls society,we will see people lost in the money—making adventures;we will see humanity losing their grace and dignity, and that, would be disastrous.I’d like to think society as encouraging and people regard profit or fame only as a horse that pulls the courage.Yet without the driver picking direction, the courage would go straight and may even end out in a dangerous situation. A certificate may give you some advantages, but not broad horizons, positive attitudes and personal integrity(诚实正直),which are the wealth you cannot acquire through any quick fixed way. Although in today’s world, the highest level of competition may not be that of skills or expertise(专门技能),but vision and strategy, your intellectual quality largely determines how far you can go in your career. 63. The author’s attitude toward today’s college education is________. A. positive B. cautious C. critical D. doubtful 64.Many college students choose to major in Business because _____. A.a businessman is very likely to make big money. B.studying business is less competitive. C.too many students have chosen Computer Programming. D.Computer Programming is not a must for them. 65.The author does strongly suggest that . A.more competition be encouraged on college campus. B.people not ignore the value of broad horizons, positive attitudes and personal integrity. C.intellectual quality determine how far one can go in his career. D.college students get as many part—time jobs as possible. 66.In the author’s opinion, ____. A.college students are not pragmatic enough B.college students should have drivers pick direction for them C.college education should provide students with more business courses D.college education should value the cultivation of students’ minds D Faces that activate the same regions of the brain again and again are more likely to be remtembered. Practice makes perfect when it comes to remembering things, but exactly how that works has long been a mystery. A study published in Science recently indicates that reactivating neural(神经的) patterns over and over again my store items into the memory. People find it easier to recall things if material is presented repeatedly at well-spaced intervals rather than all at once. For example, you’re more likely to remember a face that your’ve seen on some occasions over a few days than one that you’ve seen once in one long period. One reason that a face linked to many different contexts –such as school, work and home- is easier to recognize than one that is associated with just one setting, such as a party, could be that there are some ways to access the memory. This idea, called the encoding variability hypothesis(假说),was proposed by psychologists about 40 years ago. Each different context or setting activates a clear set of brain regions; the hypothesis suggests that it is these differing neural responses that improve the memory. But neuroimaging(神经影像)research led by Russell Poldrack, a scientist at the University of Texas. Austin, now suggests that the opposite is true—items are better remembered when they activate the same neural patterns with each exposure. Poldrack’s team measured brain activity in 24 people using functional magnetic resonance(磁共振)imaging. The subjects saw 120 unfamiliar faces, and each one repeated four times at varying intervals during the scan. One hour later, they were shown the faces again, mixed with 120 new ones, and asked to rate the familiarity of each. The researchers then looked at the brain responses that had been recorded when the subjects wee first shown the faces, focusing on 20 brain regions associated with visual perception and memory. Face that were later recognized evoked similar activation patterns at each repetition in nine of the regions, particularly those associated with object and face perception; faces that were later forgotten did not produce such pattern to the same extent in people’s mind 67. The passage is mainly about ______. A. how the brain works B. why some memories fade away C. the encoding variability hypothesis D. the neuroimaging research 68. Which of the following things can be most easily remembered according to Russell Poldrack? A. Something that activates the same regions of the brain again and again. B. Something that is linked to only one setting. C. Something that activates different neutral responses. D. Something that you have seen once for a long time. 69. The underlined word evoked in the last paragraph probably means ______. A. made B. caused C. responded D. mixed 70. Where can we most probably find the passage? A. in a traveling handbook. B. In a geography book. C. In a newspaper. D. In an advertisement. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 I know that something you get that sense from TV that you can be rich and successful without any hard work---your ticket to success is through rapping or basketball or being a reality TV star . 71 . The truth is, being successful is hard. You won’t love every subject that you study. 72 Not every homework assignment will seem completely relevant to your life right at this minute. And you won’t necessarily succeed at everything the first time your try. That’s okay. 73 JK Rowling---- who wrote Harry Potter---her first Harry Potter book was rejected 12 times before it was finally published. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team. He lost hundreds of games and missed thousands of shots during his career. But he once said, “I have failed over and over again in my life. And that’s why I succeed. These people succeeded because they understood the secret of success ---you can’t let your failures define you. 74 You have to let them show you what to do differently the next time. So if you get into trouble, that doesn’t mean you are a troublemaker, it means you need to try harder to act right. 75 A. If you get a bad grade, that doesn’t mean you’re stupid, it just means you need to spend more time studying. B. Some if the most successful people in the world are the ones who have had the most failures. C. You have to let your failures teach you. D. You won’t get along well with every teacher that you have.
