A Graham Moore is the best-selling author of The Sherlockian and the screenwriter of The Imitation Game. His new book The Last Days of Night is out now. He is talking about some of his favorite books. Murder in Three Acts BY AGATHA CHRISTIE My mother is a crime fiction(侦探小说) lover and, when I was having trouble learning to read, we’d sit in my bed at home in Chicago and take it in turns to read a paragraph. It was the first book I read cover-to-cover and I later became a writer because of that experience. Not only did it give me a love of crime fiction but, more importantly, it taught me that reading can be a shared experience. Cryptonomicon BY NEAL STEPHENSON This book showed me that historical fiction need not be dry, but can be lively and enjoyable. Stephenson asks readers to take science seriously, but writes the story in a funny way. I’d long known of Alan Turing, but Stephenson’s technique(手法) of describing him was surprising; I saw how a writer can bring a real person to life for modern readers. A Visit from the Goon Squad BY JENNIFER EGAN Egan uses a technique that I drew on when writing The Imitation Game. She tells stories from different voices and times, and uses many styles that say to readers, “I’ve done a lot of work, but now you have to join in and work it out for yourselves.” With my latest book, my greatest hope is that readers will want to get other people discussing the book. I’ve just started the conversation. 1. What influenced Moore to be a writer? A.Reading crime fiction in secret. B.Having trouble learning to read. C.Reading a book with his mother. D.Writing stories at a young age. 2. What does Moore think of Cryptonomicon? A.Boring. B.Serious. C. Imaginative. D.Humorous. 3. What does Egan hope readers will do? A.Write her some letters. B.Think for themselves. C.Tell their own stories. D.Ask her some questions. 4. Which book does Moore want readers to discuss? A.The Shelockian. B.The Imitation Game. C.The Last Days of Night. D.A Visit from the Goon Squad. B One night, I was happily making my tea when all of a sudden the room was in complete darkness. The lights had gone out, the oven(微波炉) stopped working and my phone was no longer charging(充电). I tried to fix the electricity but I soon realized that I couldn’t. I had to wait for an electrician to come in the morning. After messaging my friends to say that I wouldn’t message that night because I couldn’t charge my phone, I sat down to eat my half-cooked dinner. And then I wasn’t sure what to do. I usually spend my evenings watching TV and going on the Internet. I couldn’t even read a book because I wasn’t prepared with candles. So for me, it was an early night. Losing our electricity felt like losing a basic necessity. In fact, electricity is a luxury(奢侈品). But we think it will always be there when we need it. I use electricity all the time, even when it’s not really necessary. I use it to put the TV on even when I’m not really watching it. I use it to check my phone when I wait for a friend. Our overuse of electricity is a big problem. It is one of the causes of global warming, which is harming our environment and we need to do what we can to stop it. Not only that, but if we continue to overuse it we will soon run out. We wouldn’t want to live in a world without electricity, but we will run out one day. So, shouldn’t we start preparing for it now? Cutting back on our use of electricity saves energy resources(资源) so that they can last longer. I know for sure that I could cut down on my use of electricity. If everyone does the same, we can make a difference. 5. What did the author do when the electricity went out suddenly? A.He tried to fix it and succeeded. B.He messaged his friends for help. C.He called an electrician immediately. D.He stayed in darkness the whole night. 6. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 show? A.The author was unsure what to do. B.The author had nothing to do but sleep. C. The author was tried after the accident. D.The author didn’t want to do any reading. 7. What is the main idea of Paragraph 4? A.The results of overusing electricity. B.The examples of overusing electricity. C.The ways of using electricity properly. D.The suggestions on producing electricity. 8. According to the passage, which of the followings is TRUE? A.The overuse of electricity is the only cause of global warming. B.We have well-prepared for saving electricity. C.We’ll soon run out if no measures are taken to save electricity. D.Cutting down one’s use of electricity makes no difference in saving energy resources. C Children’s lives have changed greatly over the last 50 years. But do they have a happier childhood than you or I did? It’s difficult to look back on one’s own childhood without feeling nostalgic(怀旧的). I have four brothers and sisters, and my memories are all about being with them, playing board games on the living room floor, or spending days in the street with the other neighbourhood children, or racing up and down on our bikes. My parents hardly appear in these memories, except as providers of meals. These days, in the UK at least, the nature of childhood has changed greatly. Firstly, families are smaller, and there are far more only children. It is common for both parents to work outside the home and there is the feeling that there just isn’t time to bring up a large family, or that no one could possibly afford to have more than one child. As a result, today’s boys and girls spend much of their time alone. Another major change is that youngsters today prefer to spend most of their free time at home, inside. More than anything this is because of the fact that parents worry far more than they used to about real or imagined dangers, so they wouldn’t dream of letting their children play outside by themselves. Finally, the kind of toys children have and the way they play is totally different. Computer and video games have replaced the board games and more active pastimes of my childhood. The irony(讽刺) is that so many of these games are called “interactive(互动的)”. The fact that you can play computer games on your own further increase the sense of loneliness felt by many young people today. Do these changes mean that children today have a less pleasant childhood than I had? I personally believe that they do, but perhaps every generation(一代人) feels exactly the same. 9. Why did the author mention his childhood in Paragraph 2? A.To thank his parents B.To make a comparison. C.To introduce some games. D.To remember a good time in the past. 10. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about? A.The hard time of the UK family. B.The difficulties in raising children. C. The most challenging thing for parents. D.The reason why childhood has changed. 11. What does the author think of computer games? A.They are very exciting. B.They are not really good. C. They are too risky for children. D.They help children connect with each other. D When Natalie Hampton was 12, she was a student at one of the best schools in Los Angeles. Yet she was deeply unhappy. While in seventh and eighth grade, Natalie was bullied(欺凌) by her classmates. She was physically attacked. A classmate even held a knife up to her neck. The worst part? The bullies turned Natalie into an outcast. She ate alone in the dining room every day. “I became afraid to go to school,” said Natalie in a recent interview. “I felt worthless.” In 2014, Natalie began ninth grade at a new school with a “kind student body.” Still, she never forgot how terrible the bullies made her feel. For that reason, whenever she saw kids eating by themselves, she would invite them over. “Being included has made a difference in their lives,” said Natalie, now 16. This experience encouraged her to create an app, Sit With Us, which was started in September 2016. Sit With Us is a lunch-planning app that helps students who feel alone find a group to hang out with. Kids can also help end bullying and invite others to their lunch table. This way, anyone who doesn’t have friends to sit with can find a friendly table to join. “The Sit With Us app should help lessen fears of lonely kids,” wrote author Susan Newman. “It’s always good to have a support(支持) team at the lunch table.” What is Natalie’s hope for Sit With Us? “To reach as many kids as possible,” she said, adding that the app is already being used by kids in Australia and Europe. Natalie was recently awarded(授予) President George H. W. Bush’s Points of Light Award for her invention. The award honors those who help change and improve the world. 12. What troubled Natalie when she was 12? A.She had to go to a new school. B.She was hurt by her classmates. C. She found it hard to be friendly to others. D.She failed to help those who were bullied. 13. The underlined word “outcast” in Paragraph 3 refers to a person . A.who is not useful B.who dislikes food C. who bullies others D.who is not accepted 14. How does Sit With Us help kids? A.By talking with them. B.By introducing programs. C. By serving lunch to them. D.By supporting them at lunch. 15. What’s Natalie’s hope for the future? A.Encourage more kids to use Sit With Us. B.Invite more kids to her lunch table. C. Invent other apps like Sit With Us. D.Win more national awards. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从所给的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Teenagers earning money In the United States, you can only get a full-time job if you are 16 years old or older.
