Instead of looking at nature, I checked my e-mail. Instead of paddling a small boat, I followed my Twitter feed(推特简讯). Instead of reading great novels, I stuck to reading four newspapers each morning. I was behaving as if I were still in the office. My body was on vacation, but my head wasn’t. So this year I made up my mind to try something different: withdrawal from the Internet. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, since I’m bad at self-control. But I was determined. I started by giving the iPad to my wife. The cellphone signal at our house was worse than in the past, making my attempts at cheating an experience in frustration (沮丧). I was trapped, forced to go through with my plan. Largely breaking away from e-mail, Twitter and my favorite newspaper websites, I had few ways to connect to the world except for the radio—and how much radio can one listen to, really? I had to do what I had planned to do all along: read books. This experience has had a happy ending. With determination and the strong support of my wife, I won in my vacation struggle against the Internet, realizing finally that it was I, not the iPad, that was the problem. I knew I had won when we passed a Starbucks and my wife asked if I wanted to stop to use the Wi-Fi. “I don’t need it,” I said. However, as we return to post-vacation life, a harder test begins: Can I continue when I’m back at work? There are times when the need to know what’s being said right now is great. I have no intention of giving up my convenience completely. But I hope to resist the temptation to check my e-mail every five minutes, which leads to checking my Twitter feed and a website or two. I think a vacation is supposed to help you rest your brain to become more productive. Here I hope this one worked. 24. What do we know about the author’s last summer vacation? A. He was determined to enjoy the beautiful view. B. His iPad ruined his plan of finishing a great novel. C. He hated himself for acting as if he were working on vacation. D. He felt satisfied that he had stuck to his usual timetable. 25 What did the author do to keep away from the Internet this year? A. He cut off his cellphone signal. B. He handed his iPad to his wife. C. He refused to cheat in his house. D. He listened to the radio most of the time. 26. When back at work, the author will probably choose to ________. A. keep control of when and how to use the Internet B. continue to read more and more books C. stay away from the Internet for ever D. stop checking what is being said right now completely 27. What is the author’s opinion of a great vacation in the passage? A. A vacation is having nothing to do but read all day. B. A vacation proves that a life of pleasure is overvalued. C. A vacation means a change of pace to make one more creative. D. A vacation is a period of time to do whatever one wishes to. C Some people are so rude! Who sends an e-mail or a text message that just says “Thank you”? Who leaves a voice mail message rather than texts you? Who asks for a fact easily found on Google? Don't these people realize that they're wasting your time? Maybe I'm the rude one for not appreciating life's little politeness. But many social agreed standards just don't make sense to people drowning in digital communication. In texts, you don't have to declare who you are or even say hello; E-mail, too, is slower than a text; Voice mail is a now impolite way of trying to connect. My father learned this lesson after leaving me a dozen voice mail messages, none of which I listened to. Exasperated, he called my sister to express his dissatisfaction that I never returned his phone calls. “Why are you leaving him voice mails?” my sister asked. “Just text him.” In the age of the smartphone, there is no reason to ask once-acceptable questions about: the weather forecast, a business's phone number, or directions to a house, a restaurant, which can be easily found on Google Maps. But people still ask these things. And when you answer, they respond with a thank-you e-mail. How to handle these differing standards? Easy: Consider your audience. Some people, especially older ones, appreciate a thank-you message. Others, like me, want no reply. The anthropologist(人类学家) Margaret Mead once said that in traditional societies, the young learn from the old. But in modern societies, the old can also learn from the young. Here's hoping that politeness never goes out of fashion but that time-wasting forms of communication do. 28. What does the underlined word "exasperated" mean in the fifth paragraph? A. Worried. B. Annoyed. C. Surprised. D. Tired. 29. Which of the following does the writer agree to? A. Dealing with voice mail should vary with each individual. B. Declaring who they are or saying hello in texts is necessary C. People needn't learn from one another in traditional societies. D. People needn’t turn to Google for help when in trouble. 30. What's the best title of this passage? A. Nowadays: what means should we use in communication B. Nowadays: do you like leaving others a voice message C. Nowadays: what should we do with text messages D. Nowadays: do you need a thank-you message 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项, 并在 题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Change is scary. 31 . It can go hand in hand with the fear that we might hurt someone else if we think about ourselves. The truth is that you’re so much more courageous than you give yourself credit for and far stronger than you realize. Here are some ways that you can use to help yourself make the process of creating change more manageable. Make change into small bite size pieces. 32 . Remember that as long as you attempt to take regular practice towards your goal, such as eating more healthily every day, or walking twenty minutes a day, you’re heading in the right direction to make changes. Form a habit of keeping a diary every day. Writing a journal every night before going to bed can effectively help you cope with the emotional impact of the change process. Go to grab a pen or pencil and remember a journal is not for being neat and tidy with good spelling. 33 . Rest is essential to success. Have a rest and take timeout to build your energy 34 . We don’t give ourselves time to rest; we just end up burning out by the constant striving and worry. As we don’t have the energy to keep going, we have to give up! 35 . Just accept it! I’m sorry to say that unless some people are really secure in themselves and truly happy in their own life, they’re never going to like your changes. This has nothing to do with whether they love you or not. They are just for self-preservation! Therefore, give them a little time to adjust and get used to it. A. It is a step into the unknown. B. It’s not being lazy to have time out. C. No one else is going to like your changes. D. Don’t try to eat the elephant in one sitting. E. Creating change is about building your character. F. Within three generations our ancestors are all but forgotten. Will this 48 to you? “Here’s a better question. Look 49 three generations. You are long 50 .
