Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the ‎ builder of its environment. As a big plant-eater, it largely shapes the forest-and-savanna(大草原)surroundings in which it lives, therefore setting the terms of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat.‎ ‎    It is the elephant's great desire for food that makes it a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills small trees and underbushes, and pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in both deep tropical forests and in the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these open spaces are numerous plants in various stages of growth that attract a variety of other plant-eaters.‎ ‎    Take the rain forests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants make open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for large hoofed plant-eaters to move around and for small plant-eaters to get their food as well.‎ ‎    What worries scientists now is that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the elephant disappears, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of forest and savanna, greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem.‎ ‎5.What is the passage mainly about?‎ A.Disappearance of African elephants. B.Forests and savannas as habitats for African elephants. C.The effect of African elephants' search for food. C.They are home to many endangered animals. D.They are attractive to plant-eating animals of different kinds.‎ ‎8.The passage is developed mainly by _____.‎ A.showing the effect and then explaining the causes B.pointing out similarities and differences C.describing the changes in space order D.giving examples C China's first space-based science fiction blockbuster (大片) The Wandering Earth has stood out among the Lunar New Year's films, winning both the box office and reputation and regarded as a milestone (里程碑) in the development of China's science fiction industry.‎ The film was adapted from the original work of Chinese science fiction writer Liu Cixin and tells the story of human beings fleeing the solar system with the Earth.‎ The New York Times said that after years of hard work, China has joined the global competition for sci-fi movies. In the past, Hollywood had an unbreakable leading position in this field. The Wandering Earth is expected to open the dawning of a new era in science fiction films, breaking the monopoly (垄断) of sci-fi movies by Hollywood.‎ The sci-fi movie featuring outer space is considered the spire (塔尖) of film-making. Such films require advanced visual effects to create realistic space scenes, with grand narrative themes to immerse the audience in the film, and also need to be carefully designed by the manufacturer to avoid logical and scientific mistakes. Therefore, such films usually require huge capital investment, the formation of advanced technical teams and excellent management teams. Even if these conditions are complete, accomplishing such movies will be a high-risk challenge.‎ Liu Cixin said that 75 percent of the special effects in the movie were completed by the Chinese team. From the audience reaction, the Chinese team's work was not inferior to the top team in Hollywood. The film has been released in North America and has an 8/10 rating on movie website IMDb, which is already a good result.‎ In addition to special effects, what is even more surprising is the progress of Chinese film narrative skills, containing both universal concerns and the characteristics of Chinese culture. Science fiction movies generally require a sudden global crisis and a creative solution.‎ Since the release of the film 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), space-type sci-fi movies have gone through more than 50 years of history. Almost all of this half-century belongs to the U.S. From the Star Wars series to the recent years of Gravity (2013) and Interstellar (2014), Hollywood has always been at the forefront of creativity and technology in this field, constantly shocking the audience. However, an new era may be opened by China.  ‎ ‎9. The author mentions the opinions of The New York Times in Paragraph 3 to show _______. ‎ A. the leading position of the USA in sci-fi movies B. the great impact of the Chinese movie The Wandering Earth C. the difficulty in making outstanding sci-fi movies D. The Wandering Earth has won great box-office and reputation ‎10. According to the text, why sci-fi movies are considered the spire of the film-making industry? ‎ A. Because they often need huge investment.‎ B. Because they can attract a large number of audience by the special effects. ‎ C. Because they are always about a global disaster and a related creative solution. ‎ D. Because they are most demanding in special effects, technical and management teams. ‎ ‎11. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?‎ A. The first ice-breaking Chinese sci-fi movie ‎ B. How to make a successful sci-fi movie C. The monopoly of the US in sci-fi movie field D. I’ve learned from TV that the third season of the Chinese Poetry Competition was shown on March 23. I’m much interested in this programme, so I’m writing to ask for some relevant information.‎ As is well known to us all, the classic Chinese poetry is one of the major parts of China’s ancient traditional literature, and it is just the best prize of our culture’s literary treasure house. Learning poems isn’t about winning or losing. The power of poetry lies in shaping one’s view of life and developing one’s inner world. Your programme reminds us of the splendid Chinese poems and promotes and preserves our cultural heritage for future genernations. This programme is so amazing that I’d like to have a try. But I wonder whether there will be the fourth season, and what kind of requirements are to be met.‎ Looking forward to your early reply.‎ ‎ ‎ Yours,‎ Li Hua ‎ ‎
