The research, published in the Journal of Neuroscience, found that higher levels were found among humans that were women but in rats that were males. Their findings came after it was previously claimed that ladies speak about 20,000 words a day – over 13,000 more than men. "This study is one of the first to report a sex difference in the expression of a language-associated protein in humans or ‎ animals,” said Prof Margaret McCarthy, who led the study. In their study, the researchers attempted to determine what might make male rats more vocal than their female friends. ‎ They separated four-day-old rats from their mothers and then counted the number of times they cried out in the “ultrasonic range”, the frequencies higher than humans can hear, over five minutes. While both sexes called out hundreds of cries, the males called out twice as often, they found. But when the pups were returned to their mother’s cage, she fussed over her sons first. Tests conducted on the parts of the brain known to be associated with vocal calls showed the male pups have up to twice as much Foxp2 protein as the females. The researchers then increased the production in the brains of female pups and reduced it in males. This led to the female rats crying out more often and their mothers showing more interest to them. In contrast, males became less “talkative”.‎ The researchers then tested samples from ten children, aged between three and five, which showed that females had up to 30 per cent more of the Foxp2 protein than males, in a brain area key to language in humans.‎ ‎“Based on our observations, we assume higher levels of Foxp2 in girls and higher levels of Foxp2 in male rats is an indication that Foxp2 protein levels are associated with the more communicative sex,” said Prof McCarthy.‎ ‎"Our results imply Foxp2 as a component of the neurobiological basis of sex differences in vocal communication in mammals."‎ ‎25. From the second paragraph, we can learn that _________.‎ A. women always speak more words than men B. women and male rats have similar levels of Foxp2‎ C. McCarthy isn’t the first to find females more talkative ‎ D. men and male rats have low levels of language protein ‎26. The researchers carried out the experiments on rats in order to _________.‎ A. test which part of the brain is key to language in rats and humans B. prove the levels of Foxp2 protein in humans and rats are different C. determine the reason why female rats are more talkative than male rats D. discover the association between Foxp2 protein and vocal communication ‎27. What is mainly talked about in this passage?‎ ‎ A. Tests on humans and rats. B. Why women are the talkative sex.‎ ‎ C. Sex differences in Foxp2 protein. D. How Foxp2 protein determines oral ability.‎ C ‎ Traffic jam and cities, it seems, go hand in hand. Everyone complains about being stuck in traffic; but, like the weather, no one seems to do anything about it. In particular, traffic engineers, transportation planners, and public officials responsible for transportation systems in large cities are frequently criticized for failing to solve traffic jam.‎ ‎ But is traffic jam a sign of failure? Long queues at restaurants or theater box offices are seen as signs of success. Should transportation systems be viewed any differently? I think we should recognize that traffic jam is an unpreventable by-product of successful cities, and view the "traffic problem" in a different light.‎ ‎ Cities exist because they promote social interactions and economic transactions (交易) .‎ Traffic jam occurs where there are lots of people but limited spaces. Culturally and economically successful cities have the worst traffic problems, while decaying cities don't have much traffic. New York and Los Angeles are America's most crowded cities. But if you want access to major stock markets, you will find them easier to reach in crowded New York than in any other large cities. And if your firm needs access to satellite-guidance engineers, you will reach them more quickly through the crowded freeways of LA than through less crowded roads elsewhere.‎ ‎ Despite traffic jam, a larger number and wider variety of social interactions and economic transactions can be made perfect in large, crowded cities than elsewhere. Seen in this light, traffic jam is an unfortunate consequence(结果) of prosperity(繁荣), not a cause of economic decline and urban decay.‎ ‎ So while we can consider traffic jam as increasing costs on the areas of big cities, the costs of inaccessibility in uncrowded places are almost certainly greater.‎ ‎ There is no doubt that traffic jam brings the terrible economic and environmental damage in places like Bangkok, Jakarta, and Lagos. But mobility is far higher and traffic jam levels are far lower here in the US, even in our most crowded cities. That's why, for now, we don't see people streaming out of San Francisco and Chicago, heading for cities like Phoenix, and Cleveland.‎ ‎28. We can conclude from the first paragraph that _________.‎ ‎ A. traffic jam and weather are the two factors preventing the development of a big city ‎ B. traffic jam seems to be very difficult to deal with ‎ C. if traffic engineers try their best, traffic jam can be solved ‎ D. public officials are always criticized for misusing their power ‎29. According to the passage, what's the author's opinion towards traffic jam?‎ ‎ A. Traffic jam is unavoidable in large cities.‎ ‎ B. Traffic jam is both a sign of success and a sign of failure.‎ ‎ C. Traffic jam is the consequence of successful cities.‎ ‎ D. Traffic jam is not unpreventable for a successful city.‎ ‎30. According to this passage, which of the following is TRUE?‎ ‎ A. Crowded cities tend to promote economic transactions.‎ ‎ B. New York and Los Angeles have less limited spaces than other cities.‎ ‎ C. The satellite-guidance engineers are needed most by the firms in LA.‎ ‎ D. Despite the traffic jam in LA, it's easier to reach your destination than in other cities.‎ ‎31. What can we learn from the last paragraph?‎ ‎ A. California is as crowded and successful as San Francisco. ‎ ‎ B. The traffic jam in San Francisco has resulted in the capital becoming empty. ‎ ‎ C. The traffic jam level in Jakarta is lower than that in the US. ‎ ‎ D. Traffic jam has caused terrible bad effects in cities such as Bangkok and Lagos.‎ ‎ D When I decided to get married, my father decided to share some wisdom. “Lori, it is just as easy to love a rich man as it is to love a poor man, “ he said. My boyfriend didn’t have much money, but I loved him. “What?” I cried. “ How can you say that? I want to marry for love, NOT for money.” “ But why not marry someone you love who has money?” he asked. “Rich men are materialistic(物质主义的). I’d rather marry a poor man who loves me,” I said and he gave in.‎ And as we went on, with my family growing, I learned why my father put such importance on money. We had to cover the rent, car, electricity, food, and medical bills. We were under lot of pressure. The worries over whether we would be asked to move out or if we had the money to wash our clothes at the Laundromat this week made me question if I did the right thing by marrying a “poor” man.‎ I realized that I had entered the ranks of the poor. Not that I’d ever been rich. Most of my life, I considered us in the lower middle-class rank. We had a house of our own, food on the table, cars,‎ ‎ clothes, and money for college. But now, as I listened to an apartment neighbor talk about her monthly “Mother’s Day” gift, I realized she was talking about her welfare check (政府发放的救济金). And another young mother tried to “help” me out by connecting me with a friend who stole baby clothes from a department store. “ For a small cut,” she said, “ I could return my ‘purchase’ (购买的东西) for cash.” It made me sick. How poor was I?‎ I had a college education but wasn’t using it. I insisted on not missing a minute of our children’s childhood and it came at a price. My husband was working as hard as he could and it wasn’t enough. But somehow we made it.‎ The kids grew. Today, we look back and see the great values gained by going through those hard years. My children are not materialistic. They never thought they were poor growing up because we always managed to give a little bit of food, money, or clothes to the “poor”. They were satisfied with the simple things in life that come free such as a beach day or a horse-back ride from their dad. ‎ We had our worries, but we still treasured(珍惜) our very favorite part of the day when we’d nest (栖息地) under the covers and talked about our future, the kids and how much we loved each other. Sure our financial troubles caused a lot of fights, but we didn’t leave each other. We began to live a better life. We moved to a better community with good schools for the kids. And soon, we’ll face a new challenge with wealth. But we’ll never give up.‎ My father died three years ago. Before he died, he knew I made the right choice. I’m proud of my decision.‎ ‎32. The writer argued with her father because __________.‎ ‎ A. she thought her father didn’t love her at all ‎ B. her father thought her boyfriend was too materialistic ‎ C. her father wanted her to marry a rich man while she didn’t ‎ D. she thought her father loved her boyfriend’s money more than him. ‎ ‎33. After their children were born, the writer___________.‎ ‎ A. often regretted not using her college education ‎ ‎ B. worked very hard in order to make more money ‎ C. had to steal baby clothes from a department store ‎ ‎ D. looked after her children as a professional housewife ‎34. Why didn’t the writer’s children think they were poor growing up?‎ ‎ A. Because the writer always gave them whatever they wanted.‎ ‎ B. Because the writer and her children often helped other people.‎ ‎ C. Because the writer didn’t let her children play with their rich neighbors.‎ ‎ D. Because the writer let her children have a good life through receiving help from others.‎ ‎35. What do you think is the theme of the story?‎ ‎ A. Money doesn’t matter as much as love in marriage.‎ ‎ B. Women should always make a decision by themselves.‎ ‎ C. Listening to the old is important when people get married.‎ ‎ D. Children don’t mind whether they have a poor family or not.‎ ‎ 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ The jobs of the future have not yet been invented. 36 By helping them develop classic skills that will serve them well no matter what the future holds.‎ Curiosity Your children need to be deeply curious. How does a child learn the language? He listens for a time and then he tries to repeat the words.Parents give great praise for the smallest effort and slightest improvement. Therefore, the child develops courage and is excited about learning. It takes a long time before he knows anything about grammar, spelling or formal sentence structures.‎ ‎ As for language teachers, they should avoid criticism and be very encouraging and generous with praise. Criticism or pointing out faults too often causes students to lose self-confidence and develop a fear of speaking. The best way to motivate a student is using praise.‎ ‎ The most important aspect of speaking is having good self-esteem.Self-esteem is how you feel about yourself. When most Chinese people are asked how their English is,or they are told their English is very good, they immediately respond by saying, "Oh my English is very poor."
