But few of us really know the power of faith and perseverance. South African swimmer Natalie du Toit embodies those virtues. Du Toit, became the first swimmer to compete in both the Olympic Games and the Paralympics(残奥会)in Beijing. Although she finished 16th in the tough 10 km marathon in the able-bodied Games. she has collected three golds in the Paralympics so far. One of the most successful disabled athletes of all time, Natalie du Toit was already a promising swimmer when she lost her leg in a motorcycle accident in 2001, at just 17. “There are a lot of dark moments,” du Toit said. “There are some days when I cry. But I try to remember that better days are ahead. You just go on.” Within a few months, she was back in the swimming pool. She still competes and still succeeds. The only difference is that she has switched to longer events--from 200 m and 400 m individual medley to 800 m and 1,500 m freestyle--to make up for her loss of speed with only one leg. But she made no adjustment to her mental outlook(精神面貌). “Going out in the water, it feels as if there's nothing wrong with me. It doesn’t matter if you look different. you're still the same as everybody else because you have the same dream.” She is the owner of many world records, and she also won gold when competing against able-bodied swimmers in the 1, 500 m freestyle at the All Africa Games in 2007. But there is no magic recipe for success. It all comes down to hard work and determination. “She is stubborn, which is good and bad, ” said her coach Karoly Von Toros. “Good for the swimming, but bad for the coach.” There is a poem that hangs on her wall that reads: The tragedy of life does not lie in not reaching your goals; The tragedy of life lies in not having goals to reach for. 5.Natalie du Toit is a vivid example that . She adjusted herself to long events d.A motorcycle accident disabled her. A. cdab B. dcba C. dcab D. dacb C Why do I volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America? I have many reasons. Perhaps the biggest reason is that someone volunteered to help me. Years ago, I was on the other side of the table. I was lonely and felt kind of lost. More than once, I found myself on the wrong side of a jail cell(牢房). If someone hadn’t stepped in, I probably wouldn’t even be here right now. I've seen the work that Big Brothers Big Sisters has been doing all over the country and I'm pleased to be part of it. I've never done anything that made me prouder than my volunteering work. Big Brothers Big Sisters helped me get my head on straight. There are no words to describe the joy I get from helping somebody turn their life around. Don't tell anyone I said that, but volunteering is probably the fastest way to get over sadness or depression. Every time I start to feel bad, I talk to someone who needs my help and it makes me feel better and worse all at the same time. I feel better, because doing good things fills me with a sense of pride. I feel worse because I feel I have no right to complain about my situation especially when I hear what others are going through. I’ve come a long way from where I was. Volunteering is how I want to leave my mark on the world. I recommend volunteering work to everybody, especially for somebody who isn't sure where they're going in life. Helping someone find their path is often the best way to find yours. 9. But for the one who helped him, the writer_________. A. would have gone to prison B. would be a dangerous guy now C. would have been killed by others D. would be still alone and lost now 10. Why does the writer sometimes feel worse when volunteering? A. Because he is so sorry for his complaining. B. Because volunteering is in fact not a piece of cake C. Because he is forbidden to complain about his difficulties D. Because helping others can't always give him a sense of pride. 11. The underlined part in the last paragraph means_________. A. going back has been impossible B. volunteering has improved the writer a lot C. the writer has a long way to go before getting noticed D. the writer values the old good days at Big Brothers Big Sisters 12. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. Only by helping others can we find the path in life. B. Big Brothers Big Sisters will become famous one day C. The writer has decided to devote his life to volunteering D. Big Brothers Big Sisters will leave every member mark on the world D Modern inventions have speeded up people's loves amazingly. Motor-cars cover a hundred miles in little more than an hour, aircraft cross the world inside a day, while computers operate at lightning speed. Indeed, this love of speed seems never-ending. Every year motor-cars are produced which go even faster and each new computer boasts of saving precious seconds in handling tasks. All this saves time, but at a price. When we lose or gain half a day in speeding across the world in an air plane, our bodies tell us so. We get the uncomfortable feeling known as jetlag; our bodies feel that they have left behind on another time zone. Again, spending too long at computers results in painful wrists and fingers. Mobile phones also have their dangers, according to some scientists, too much use may transmit harmful radiation into our brains, a consequence we do not like to think about. However, what do we do with the time we have saved? Certainly not relax, or so it seems. We are so accustomed to constant activity that we find it difficult to sit and do nothing, or even just one thing at a time. Perhaps the days are long gone when we might listen quietly to a story on the radio, letting imagination take us into another world. There was a time when some people's lives were devoted simply to the cultivation of the land or the care of cattle. No Multi-tasking there; their lives went on at a much gentler pace, and in a familiar pattern. There is much that we might envy about a way of life like this. Yet before we do so, we must think of the hard tasks our ancestors faced, they farmed with bare hands, often lived close to hunger, and had to fashion tools from wood and stone, Modern machinery has freed people from that primitive existence. 13. The new products become more and more time-saving because_________. A. our love of speed seems never-ending B. time is limited C. the prices are increasingly high D. the manufacturers boast a lot 14. What does “the days” in Paragraph 3 refer to? A. Imaginary life. B. Simple life in the past C. Times of inventions D. Time for constant activity. 15. What is the author's attitude towards the modern technology? A. Critical B. Objective. C. Optimistic. D. Negative 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to write a business apology letter Drafting a good business apology letter is one of the basic tasks a businessman has to complete. 16 It can also retain(保留) the customer, and even strengthen your relationship with the customer. 17 Then a business apology letter can be drafted and sent to the customer without delay.
