But it is not a distant childhood memory. The words come back to you as clearly as when you sang them all those years ago. Researchers at the University of Edinburgh studied the relationship between music and remembering a foreign language. They found that remembering words in a song was the best way to remember even one of the most difficult languages. Here is what they did. Researchers took 60 adults and randomly divided them into three groups of 20. Then they gave the groups three different types of “listenandrepeat” learning conditions. Researchers had one group simply speak the words. They had the second group speak the words to a rhythm, or beat. And they asked the third group to sing the words. All three groups studied words from the Hungarian language for 15 minutes. Then they took part in a series of language tests to see what they remembered. Why Hungarian, you ask? Researchers said they chose Hungarian because not many people know the language. It does not share any roots with Germanic or Romance languages, such as Italian or Spanish. After the tests were over, the singers came out on top. The people who learned these new Hungarian words by singing them showed a higher overall performance. They did the best in four out of five of the tests. They also performed two times better than those who simply learned the words by speaking them. Dr. Katie Overy says singing could lead to new ways to learn a foreign language. The brain likes to remember things when they are contained in a catchy 3, or memorable 4, tune 5. Dr. Ludke said the findings could help those who struggle to learn foreign languages. On the University of Edinburgh's website Dr. Ludke writes, “This study provides the first experimental evidence that a listenandrepeat singing method can support foreign language learning, and opens the door for future research in this area.” 41.The “song” mentioned in the first paragraph is intended to ________. A.recall the past B.attract the readers C.introduce the topic D.compare the childhood with the present 42.According to the passage which language doesn't share the same root with Germanic or Romance languages? A.Hungarian. B.Spanish. C.Italian. D.English. 43.Based on the last two paragraphs, we can conclude that ________. A.singing is the best way to learn a language B.the brain probably works best when the foreign language learners sing the words C.a listenrepeat method is very effective for any language learner D.Dr. Katie Overy and Dr. Ludke disagree with each other 44.In which situation can the finding of the research be applied? A.A mother is going to teach her baby how to speak. B.A child is going to have his first music lesson. C.A student is going to learn a new English song. D.An American is going to learn some Chinese. B I come from a city on the United States’east coast. It’s a ten-hour flight for me to get home from Shanghai. When I got off the plane, I took photos of the blue sky and white clouds along the way. After two weeks, I returned to Shanghai. Much to my surprise, the blue sky in Shanghai that I liked before was not as blue as that in the US. I couldn’t help wondering what had happened. A few days later, I went to tour Waitan (a famous tourist attraction in Shanghai) by the Huangpu River with some of my friends. There we saw five Ferrari sports cars by the side of the road. The red and yellow cars looked so nice that everyone was looking at them. However, when I turned my head, I noticed the sky over Waitan, I was shocked to find that the buildings in the Lujiazui area on the other side of Huangpu River could hardly be seen. It was then that I realized that Ferrari cars could be bought with money, but a blue sky couldn’t. Shanghai is an important economic (经济的) and trade center in China. It has made great contributions (贡献) to the whole nation’s economic development. However, we need to protect the environment during economic growth. Pollution is poisoning our air and our rivers. Without clean air and rivers, how will people be able to survive? 45. The author mentioned the Ferrari sports cars in order to _______. A. tell us that Shanghai is a developed city B. ask us to stop driving sports cars C. tell us how much people like cars D. focus our attention on air pollution 46. What can we learn about the author? A. He comes from Shanghai. B. He likes to visit different places. C. He wants to buy a Ferrari sports car. D. He is socially responsible (责任). 47. Who might be interested in this passage? A. Those who love Ferrari sports cars. B. Those who care about the environment. C. Those who want to travel in Shanghai. D. Those who like to take photos. 48. What is the best title for this passage? A. Money Can Buy Ferraris, But Not a Blue Sky B. Where People Should Live C. Different Opinions on Cars D. Different Places Have Different Skies C One of the most important things in the world is friendship. In order to have friends, you have to be a friend. But how can you be a good friend at school? Listen—Listen when they are talking. Don't say anything unless they ask you a question. Sometimes it's not necessary for you to have anything to say; they just need someone to talk to about their feelings. Help them—If your friends are ever in need of something, be there to help them. You should try to put them first, but make sure you don't do everything they want you to do. Try to take an extra(额外的)pencil or pen with you to classes in case (以防) they forget one. Have a little extra money in your pocket in case they forget something they need. Be there for them—Try to make something for your friends to help make them feel better in hard times. Making cards and encouraging them are among the nicest things you can do for a friend. Marilyn Monroe, a famous U.S. actor, once said, “I often make mistakes. Sometimes I am out of control. But if you can't stay with me at my worst, you are sure not to deserve(值得)to be with me at my best.” Always remember this! If you don't want to stay with your friends when they're in hard times, then you don't deserve to be with them when they're having a good time! ________—Try to make plans with your friends. Go shopping, go for ice creams, have a party, go to a movie and so on. Take time to know each other even better by doing something you both enjoy. But planning things together, you both can have a good time. And you'll remember these things when you're both old! 49.While your friend is talking to you about his or her feelings, you should ________. A.give him or her some advice B.calm him or her down C.just listen unless asked D.share your feelings as well 50.What can we learn from Marilyn Monroe's words? A.A friend in need is a friend indeed. B.A friend is easier lost than found. C.Life without a friend is death. D.A man is known by his friends. 51.Which of the following can be put in the blank of the last paragraph? A.Make plans. B.Enjoy yourself. C.Understand your friends. D.Play with your friends. 52.What is the passage mainly about? A.How to find a good friend. B.How to help friends in trouble. C.How to make more friends. D.How to be a good friend. D It is easy to find your way about in New York. It is laid out so regularly. Instead of streets winding and twisting (迂回) as they do in London, they are all regular and well planned. The streets running north and south are called “avenues” and are numbered, e.g. 1st Avenue, 2nd Avenue, etc. The streets going east and west are called “streets” and are also numbered, e.g. 51st Street, 63rd Street. It is all much more logical (合理的) than London’s street names. But I couldn’t help thinking how much more interesting than these dull cold numbers are London’s illogical but colorful names of streets, e.g. “Bishopgate” (which is not a gate and hasn’t a Bishop in it); “Haymarket” or “Cornmarket” (where you won’t see any hey or corn) or “Poultry” (without a living chicken anywhere in sight) or “Threadneedle Street” (where you won’t find little girls learning to sew). 53. In the second sentence of the passage, “laid out” means ______. A. built B. be put C. designed D. cut down 54. The streets running from north to south are called _______. A. avenues in London B. streets in America C. avenues in New York D. streets in London 55. According to the writer’s opinion, ______. A. avenues and streets are the same B. streets in America are better than avenues in England C. streets in New York are better than those in London D. the writer didn’t agree with the London streets planners 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 When we were kids, my little sister Madison and I were the M&Ms—my parents' two daughters. 56. So it was quite a surprise when my mom and dad sat us down to let us know that baby number three was on the way when I was 10 years old. However, as soon as my brother Mac was born, he completely stole my heart and I have learned many things from having a young brother. ● 57. Having a baby in your life means watching your parents endlessly change diapers (尿布), make bottles, and wipe spit-ups every once in a while. I was allowed to do those things and I learned just how important it was to take care of this little life before I even hit middle school. ● You watch a child grow up. 58.I remember how excited my family was when we discovered how fast of a reader he was in kindergarten. I'll never forget telling him bedtime stories before he went to sleep at night. It's cool to think about the entirety of his life and how far he has come. ● You teach your brother life lessons. From a young age, my brother watched my sister and me overcome personal challenges, go to high school, and, worst of all, get our hearts broken. 59. Watching his sisters go through life's difficulties has taught him how he should act when he gets older. Now Mac is 11 years old. I have no shame in telling people that one of my best friends is an 11-year-old boy. In fact, our family without him is unimaginable. 60. A.You stay in the know. B.You learn about responsibility early on. C.We received a lot of attention, and we liked it that way. D.All I can say is that my family wouldn't be happy without Mac. E.Nothing makes Mac more upset than a mean guy who hurts a girl's feelings. F.I remember the first time Mac crawled, walked, and said my name. G.Thanks , Mom and Dad, for turning the M&Ms into the Three Musketeers. 第四部分 完形填空(共30分,每题1.5分) I don't know what's your opinion about mountains.
