Liz Payne B Next autumn when you see wild geese (大雁) heading south for the winter flying in a V formation you might think about what scientists have discovered as to why they fly that way. As each bird flaps (拍打) its wings, it creates an uplift (上升力) for the bird immediately following. By flying in a V formation the whole group adds at least 71% greater flying range (航程) than if each bird flies on its own. People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going more quickly and easily because they are traveling on the push of one another. When a wild goose falls out of the formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance (阻力) of trying to go alone and quickly tries to get back into the formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front. When the head goose gets tired, it flies back into the formation and another goose flies to the front. It is wise to take turns doing difficult jobs whether it be people or wild geese flying south. Wild geese honk (发出雁叫声) from behind to inspire those up front to keep up their speed. What can we learn from this? When a wild goose gets sick or wounded by gunshots, and falls out of the formation, two other geese will fall out with that goose and follow it down to lend help and protection. They will stay with the fallen goose until it is able to fly or until it dies, and only then will they go on with their own or with another formation to catch up with their group. 4. Wild geese fly in a V formation in order to ________. A. protect themselves from danger B. fly more quickly and easily C. help the sick and wounded D. fly much higher in the sky 5. If a wild goose falls out of the V formation, _______. A. the other geese will call it back B. the other geese will fly with it C. it will try to get back into the group D. it will fall behind the whole group 6. What can we learn from the fifth paragraph? A. We should give people facing difficulties encouragement. B. We should believe in those who offer us help. C. We should try to lead others to move forward. D. We should care more about the old and sick. 7. When a wild goose becomes sick or is wounded, ____. A. it will be left alone and will fall on the ground B. other geese will honk to give it encouragement C. the whole group will stop flying D. two other geese will stay with it to offer help C Welcome to your future life! You get up in the morning and look into the mirror. Your face is firm and young-looking. In 2035, medical technology is better than ever. Many people at your age could live to be 150, so at 40, you’re not old at all. And your parents just had an anti-aging (抗衰老的) treatment. Now, all three of you look the same age! You say to your shirt, “Turn red.” It changes from blue to red. In 2035, “smart clothes” contain particles(粒子) much smaller than the cells in your body. The particles can be programmed to change clothes’ color or pattern. You walk into the kitchen. You pick up the milk, but a voice says, “You shouldn’t drink that!” Your fridge has read the chip (芯片) that contains information about the milk, and it knows the milk is old. In 2035, every article of food in the grocery store has such a chip. It’s time to go to work. In 2035, cars drive themselves. Just tell your “smart car” where to go. On the way, you can call a friend using your jacket sleeve. Such “smart technology” is all around you. So will all these things come true? “For new technology to succeed,” says scientist Andrew Zolli, “it has to be so much better that it replaces what we have already.” The Internet is one example—what will be the next? 8. We can learn from the text that in the future . A. people will never get old B. everyone will look the same C. red will be the most popular color D. clothes will be able to change their pattern 9. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4? A. Milk will be harmful to health. B. More drinks will be available for sale. C. Food in the grocery store will carry electronic information. D. Milk in the grocery store will stay fresh much longer. 10. Which of the following is mentioned in the text? A. Nothing can replace the Internet. B. Fridges will know what people need. C. Jacked sleeves can be used as a guide. D. Cars will be able to drive automatically. 11. What is the text mainly about? A. Food and clothing in 2035. B. Future technology in everyday life. C. Medical treatments of the future. D. The reason for the success of new technology. D One day, Mr. Arnold was teaching a lesson, and things were going as normally as ever. He was explaining the story of mankind to his pupils. He told them that, in the beginning, men were nomads(游牧人);they never stayed in the same place for very long. Instead, they would travel about, here and there, in search of food, wherever it was to be found. And when the food ran out, they would move off somewhere else. He taught them about the invention of farming and keeping animals. This was an important discovery, because by learning to cultivate(耕作)the land, and care for animals, mankind would always have food steadily available. It also meant that people could remain living in one place, and this made it easier to set about tasks that would take a long while to complete, like building towns, cities, and all that were in them. All the children listening were attracted by this story, until Lucy jumped up: “And if that was so important and improved everything so much, why are we nomads all over again, Mr. Arnold?” Mr. Arnold didn’t know what to say. Lucy was a very intelligent girl. He knew that she lived with her parents in a house, so she must know that her family were not nomads; so what did she mean? “We have all become nomads again,” continued Lucy. “The other day, outside the city, they were cutting the forest down. A while ago a fisherman told me how they fish. It’s the same with everyone:when there’s no more forest left, the foresters go elsewhere, and when the fish run out, the fishermen move on. That’s what the nomads did, isn’t it?” The teacher nodded, thoughtfully. Really, Lucy was right. Mankind had turned into nomads. Instead of looking after the land in a way that we could be sure it would keep supplying our needs, we kept developing it until the land was bare. And then off we would go to the next place! The class spent the rest of the afternoon talking about what they could do to show how to be more civilized. The next day everyone attended class wearing a green T-shirt, with a message that said, “I am not a nomad!” And, from then on, they set about showing that indeed they were not. Every time they knew they needed something, they made sure that they would get it using care and control. If they needed wood or paper, they would make sure that they got the recycled kind. They ordered their fish from fish farms, making sure that the fish they received were not too young and too small. They only used animals that were well cared for, and brought up on farms. And so, from their little town, those children managed to give up being nomads again, just as prehistoric men had done so many thousands of years ago. 12.Why would early humans travel about in the beginning? A. To experience different lifestyles. B. To go sightseeing in different places. C. To find what they could to feed themselves. D. To do more exercise to build themselves up. 13. In the teacher’s opinion, Lucy’s argument was________. A. reasonable B. ridiculous C. puzzling D. shocking 14. Which of the following agrees with the message “I am not a nomad”(Paragraph7)? A. People eat young fish for its delicious taste. B. People use recycled materials as much as possible. C. Fishermen move elsewhere when there is no fish left. D. Foresters leave the place where wood is not available. 15. The writer tries to make us believe that________. A. mankind has been progressing mainly through traveling about B. it’s unwise for mankind to use the land in an uncontrolled way C. it’s quite good for students to learn more about the history of mankind D. teachers should encourage students to voice their own opinions 第二节 (共5小题, 每小题2分, 满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 It can be challenging to find time to work out(锻炼)when your schedule is full, but unless you want to deal with a waistline(腰围) that keeps increasing in size, staying active is important. 16__ Workday You might not have time to escape the office and visit the gym during your lunch break, but that doesn’t mean you can’t burn calories throughout your workday. Meanwhile, it is not uncommon to see many young people, even high school students, attend these shows. As far as I am concerned, TV talent show is like a double-edged sword, which can do us both good and harm. On the one hand, these shows can provide precious opportunities for the young to express themselves and to perform their talents of singing, dancing and so on. On the other hand, they may also mislead the youth and make them believe that they can make easy money or become famous overnight, ignoring the fact of “No pains, no gains.” Therefore, it is of vital importance for us, especially young people and their parents, to think twice before attending them.查看更多
