B “You’ll be blind by the time you’re twenty-five,” a doctor at Children’s Hospital predicted. “Your blood sugars are much too high.” It consumed me. No matter where I was or what I was doing, it was overhead like a dark cloud, waiting for just the right opportunity to break open and destroy my world. I liked painting. Losing myself in painting filled me with peace. Painting provided me with the only place where I could escape from those threatening words. When I was twenty-one, my right eye went blind. Precisely three months after my twenty-fifth birthday, I had a massive hemorrhage (大出血) in my left eye because of an accident. For the next twenty years, vision came and went. I went through many eye operations in an attempt to keep my vision. But after one final operation, I lost the battle and all remaining vision. And I buried all dreams of painting. Desperate, I enrolled in (注册) a sixteen-week program for the blind and visually impaired (损伤的). I learned personal adjustment and the use of a computer with adaptive software. A whole new world opened up to me through this program. “Jaws and Window-Eyes are leading software for the blind,” my instructor told me. “You can use the Internet, e-mail and Microsoft with all its tools and features.” It’s amazing! Hope went up for the first time in years. “By learning how to use hot keys to control the mouse, you can use Microsoft Access, Excel and Powerpoint,” my instructor added. For the next several years, I learned that when one door closes, another door opens. There are plenty of choices available for the blind and visually impaired through the gift of technology. Not only do I have a speaking computer, but I have a speaking watch, alarm clock and calculator. 24.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 refer to? A. The right opportunity. B. Be optimistic in the face of life’s difficulties. C Why do people lie? Many psychologists agree that lying can start from childhood. There are various reasons why children make false statements. They usually tell untruthful stories to cover up the mistakes that they have done in the past. Lying is also a way to avoid receiving punishments from parents. If parents fail to reprimand their children for making up false stories, then there is a possibility that they will continue to lie during their teenage years. Teenagers lie because they want to be accepted by their friends. This is the main reason why they create stories that are not true just to become presentable and acceptable to other people. In some instances, teenagers tell untruthful statements to avoid criticisms from their families and friends. As teenagers grow, lying becomes one of their habits. Their knowledge on making up untruthful stories becomes more developed. People lie in workplaces if they fail to meet the deadlines and if they fail to accomplish and do their tasks efficiently. Some of the common lies made in workplaces are getting sick and having emergencies at home. The danger involved in frequent lying is when it becomes a character. Frequent lying causes the development of the condition known to doctors as pathological(病态的) lying. Pathological lying is a mental health condition, which is associated with individuals who have the urge to tell untruthful statements. Patients suffering from it make up stories about everything and anything. These individuals lie to meet the standards of other people who they want to please. These patients deceive other people because it gives them an unexplained pleasure. One of the best ways of treating pathological liars is to help them tell true statements and stories at all times. This may be hard for them, but as they are accustomed to it, they will start to realize that they will be more accepted by their families and other people if they stop themselves from making up false stories. 28. The underlined word "reprimand" in Paragraph l means " ". A. scold B. fine C. praise D. disappoint 29. What's the major reason for teenagers' lying behavior? A. Protecting themselves. B. Pleasing themselves. C. Avoiding embarrassment. D. Becoming popular. 30. Pathological lying is a disease because the patients . A. lose interest in everything . B. are critical about themselves. C. can't help lying all the time . D. have the urge to please others. 31. The writer addresses pathological lying by analyzing A. some typical cases . B. its causes and development. C. its unexplained pleasure. D. the difficulty of its treatment D In cooperation with German experts, Several scientists from the University of Bradford believe that they finally solved a mystery that has been confusing millions of people: why our hair turns gray with age. The researchers came up with their results by examining native hair and cells from human hair follicles(毛囊). They say the secret turns out to be hidden in catalase(过氧化氢酶),which is causing hair to turn gray. Catalase production goes down with age and stress, allowing hydrogen peroxide(过氧化氢)in the hair to do its favorite job—making hair gray, and then white, by blocking the normal production of melanin(黑色素).Melanin is our hair's natural pigment that is responsible for the color of hair.It also determines the color of our eyes and skin. Dr.Gerald Weizmann, an editor of a journal, says,"All of our hair cells make a tiny bit of hydrogen peroxide, but as we get older, this little bit becomes quite a lot, and our hair turns gray and then white." The new study brings hope for millions of people who have to color their hair: to finally obtain some shampoo that will decrease levels of hydrogen peroxide and therefore restore gray or white hair to its natural color or even prevent it from turning gray. The researchers are already conducting an experiment with such a drug on a few volunteers with gray hair and expect to get the results in the next two to three months. If everything works out, millions of people will choose between this drug and other previously used expensive dyes. However, even if the drug works, it will take at least several years before it can be brought to the market. 32.What is the passage mainly about? A. The effect that gray hair has on people. B. The chemical elements of people's hair. C. The reason why people's hair turns gray. D. New drugs to prevent people's hair from turning gray. 33.According to the passage, people's hair turns gray because of______. A. a decrease in catalase B. the death of hair cells C. the production of melanin D. a decrease in hydrogen peroxide 34.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A. The new study shows it's harmful to color our hair with dyes. B. Dr.Gerald Weizmann is in charge of the new drug experiment. C. Our hair cells make lots of hydrogen peroxide when we are young. D. We may restore our gray or white hair to its natural color with shampoo. 35.What can we learn from the last paragraph? A. Only a small number of people can use the new drug. B. Most of the volunteers in the experiment are old people. C. The drug cannot be brought to the market soon even if it works. D. The researchers have already known the results of the experiment. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Did you feel like the negative remark was more influential than the compliments that you received earlier? If the answer to the question is “Yes”, then you are not alone. 36 When negative remarks come about, you remind yourself that it is only someone’s opinion and everyone is entitled to express their opinions. They have the right to say anything they want to say. 37 . You can choose to do whatever you feel necessary with that person’s opinion. When I was a kid, I heard a saying — “A barking dog won’t stop a moving carriage.” That is to say if a carriage is moving and a dog is running after it while barking, the carriage won’t stop because of that dog’s barking. As to campus bullying, I suggest an exercise to kids who are being bullied at school. 38 Take a deep breath, in through your nose. Exhale out of your mouth, and pretend there is a drinking straw in your mouth so that you exhale air in a straight line. This short exercise will be calming, and allow you to stay cool. 39 . I personally do not know anyone who is calm. What I’m suggesting is that you learn to productively deal with other people’s negatively, and take control of your emotions and thoughts. In an article in Psychology Today, Dr Raj Raghunathan says, “The difference between ordinary people and extraordinary people is simple. Extraordinary people choose to listen to their positivity and ignore other people’s negativity.” 40 . So you should learn how to deal with negative remarks and not let them control your emotions and thoughts. A. Meantime, you choose to be affected by the negative remakes. B. They see things differently. C. There are many people feeling like this, but you all need to learn how to handle negative remarks. D. As far as I’m concerned, some else’s opinion is not necessarily a reflection of your reality. E. Now I’m not asking you to become calm. F. Therefore, you must stay calm. G.
