She must be…Well, I’ve forgotten how old she’d be now! ” My smile froze and my hands began to shake. My grandmother had Alzheimer’s disease. It seemed impossible for this amazing woman to be able to look after herself. Gradually, not remembering where she placed her glasses became not remembering where her house was, which became not ‎ always remembering my name. My birthday gifts from Grandma used to be highly expected; she always knew exactly what to get and her cards would make me smile. Now, my gift from her is ‎ really from my father, who buys a present in her name since she doesn’t remember when my birthday is. A birthday card without her writing just reminds me that my grandmother isn’t the same anymore. ‎ ‎ I feel sad about it and I find a great comfort through writing. Writing my memories on paper helps me to deal with what is happening and to see Grandma as the woman she truly is. I have hopes of someday soon writing a novel about the Alzheimer’s struggle, so that I might help others who are experiencing the same pains deal with the realities of losing a loved one this way. Strangely enough, recording my sadness reduced some of the pain. I know it’s her strength that pulls me through the hard times. That is the character I have wanted to have since I was a child, and it does not change, no matter how weak her mind has become. So now, when I sit on the chair next to Grandma and know she can’t remember my name, I swallow the bitter medicine of disappointment and smile. ‎ ‎21. The author wants to write a novel about the Alzheimer’s struggle because _______.‎ A. her grandmother asked her to do so ‎ B. she wants to become a well-known author C. her grandmother’s life story will make a wonderful novel D. she wants to help others who have a loved one with the disease ‎ ‎24. What is the best title for the text?‎ A. The bitter medicine of disappointment B. A great comfort through writing ‎ C. My grandmother D. My birthday gift ‎ B The largest bird that can’t fly also happens to be the largest living bird in the world. This is the huge North African Ostrich(鸵鸟). When the male(雄性)is fully grown, he reaches a height of nearly eight feet and many weigh close to three hundred pounds. His wings are very small and the wing feathers are very soft, and therefore he does not fly. ‎ You have probably heard the old saying about “the foolish ostrich burying his head in the sand”. Well, the ostrich is not nearly as foolish as he is said to be. In the daytime, when the hen is sitting on the eggs, she does not want to be seen; instead of sticking her long neck up into the air, she bends her neck and head down. That way, she can best protect the eggs and herself. ‎ Because the ostrich can’t fly up into the air to escape from danger on the ground, he has to remain alert at all times. Luckily, he has very good eyesight and hearing, so he can stop danger in time to run away. The ostrich can run so fast that it almost seems as if he is flying. ‎ Sometimes, when a person has a small appetite(胃口), we say that he “eats like a bird”. Of course, that bird is not the ostrich! An ostrich will eat anything under the sun. When an ostrich died in a zoo, scientists cut it open to see what he had eaten. Here are some of the things found in its stomach: three pieces of wood, part of a film roll, a French coin, four pennies, and so on. ‎ ‎25. Ostriches bury their heads in the sand because they _______.‎ A. are too lazy to do anything B. can avoid being attacked C. can relax by doing so D. are very shy ‎26. The underlined part “remain alert” in Paragraph 3 probably means “______”.‎ A. be sure about everything B. be careful in flying C. be full of energy D. be quick to act ‎27 According to the text, which of the following is NOT true?‎ A. An ostrich has very soft feathers. ‎ B. An ostrich has a small appetite.‎ C. An ostrich can run fast just like flying. ‎ D. An ostrich is not as foolish as we think.‎ ‎28. Which would be the best title for the text? ‎ A. The ostrich’s strange life ‎ B. The ostrich – foolish or clever?‎ C. The things in the stomach of an ostrich ‎ D. The ostrich – the largest bird that can’t fly ‎ C Long long ago, there lived two brothers in a village. Their parents died and left them a farm. The elder son took everything except for a very small piece of land, a cat and a dog. The younger son had to use the cat and the dog to pull his plough(犁) because he did not have an ox(牛). They didn’t like this at all and cried out. ‎ Near the farm, there was a mountain called Stone Mountain. A demon(魔鬼) lived on this mountain and people who looked at it carefully could see his face. When the Demon of Stone Mountain heard the cat and the dog crying out, he looked down. He thought a cat and a dog looked funny pulling a plough. He opened his mouth and laughed. ‎ The younger son heard the demon’s laughter. He looked up and saw inside the demon’s huge, open mouth, it was full of gold and silver. Quickly, he ran up the mountain and hurried inside the demon’s mouth. There, he collected a little of the gold and silver and then hurried out again. Now he could buy himself a house, a larger piece of land and an ox to pull his plough. ‎ His brother soon found out what had happened. He immediately got the cat and the dog and used them to pull his plough near Stone Mountain. Once again, the demon opened his mouth to laugh at the sight of a cat and a dog pulling a plough. Quickly, the elder brother ran into the demon’s mouth and began filling his bags with gold and silver. ‎ He was so busy that he forgot about the cat and the dog, and it was not long before the two animals lay down to rest. As soon as this happened, the Demon of Stone Mountain stopped laughing and closed his mouth. The elder brother was kept inside and was never seen again. ‎ ‎29. There are even whole underground cities, complete with streets, shops, homes and so on. ‎ Missouri‎, the ‎United States The people of Festus‎, ‎Missouri, decided to build their new houses inside a mine. People fix something that can remove water from the air to make the inside stay nice and dry. The water is then used to water gardens. ‎ Shaanxi‎, China ‎ In the Shaanxi area of central China, many people live in cave homes (called yaodong) carved out of the packed earth of cliffs(悬崖)and riverbanks. These cave homes are made with rounded fronts and ceilings, a strong shape that won’t fall down easily.‎ Kinver Edge‎, ‎England The small but comfortable houses in which the monks lived were carved out of large rocks near Kinver Edge in England.
