II. 阅读理解 (每小题2分,共15小题,30分) A Most people have map apps on their phones that can show their location and guide them to where they want to go. But how do these apps know your location at any time or place? They find you by using satellite navigation (satnav) systems (卫星导航系统). A satnav system uses groups of satellites to find the user’s location. This location information is then sent to a receiver, such as a smartphone. The first satnav system was the Global Positioning System (GPS), which belongs to the United States. First used in 1964, the system is the world’s leading satnav system. But China’s satnav system, Beidou, has overtaken (超过) GPS in size, Japan’s Nikkei Asian Review reported. China sent Beidou’s first navigation satellite into space in 2000. China also became the third country to build a satnav system after the US and Russia, People’s Daily reported. As of right now, over 30 countries in Africa and the Middle East are using the Beidou system. With its world-leading technology, Beidou is leading Chinese citizens to a better life by playing significant (重要的) roles in different areas, according to Xinhua News Agency. For example, as of April, over 6.2 million vehicles (车辆) in China were using Beidou for navigation, according to a report on the Beidou system’s construction (建造) and development. At the newly-built Beijing Daxing International Airport, Beidou has been used to keep track of (追踪) loading and unloading vehicles indoors and outdoors. When the airport fully opens, each baggage cart will have Beidou navigation equipment to help passengers get their luggage faster. How many satellites? For satnav systems, the number of satellites is important for improving the system’s positioning accuracy (定位精度). The more satellites, the more accurate the positioning is. Here are the amounts (数量) of satellites for several leading satnav systems. Beidou (China): 35 GPS (US): 31 GLONASS (Russia): 24 Galileo (European Union): 22 21. What do map apps depend on to find a user’s location? A. satellites B. computers C. receivers D. smartphones 22. Which country built the world’s second satnav system? A. The US. B. Japan. C. China. D. Russia. 23. What do we know about the Beidou system? A. Its first group of satellites was sent into space in 2001. B. It offers services to other countries. C. The number of satellites it uses is the same as GPS. D. It has become the world’s best satnav system. 24. What do the last two paragraphs tell us? A. Why most vehicles are using the Beidou system. B. How Beidou will improve service quality at airports. C. How the Beidou system is being used. D. Who will be interested in using Beidou. B Growing up in a Chinese community in Vancouver, Canada, I was exposed (接触) to aspects (方面) of both Canadian and Chinese culture throughout my childhood. In my community, many traditions and cultural traits (特征) brought by Chinese immigrants (移民) remain alive. For example, interactions (互动) between Chinese neighbors: people greet each other warmly and sometimes stop for a chat. Families also stay mostly the same after crossing the ocean. Elderly members still live with their children instead of in care homes. Another similarity is that many of us celebrate traditional Chinese holidays, such as Spring Festival. Although it’s in a different country, the holidays are still commemorated with the same foods, entertainment and values as they are in China. My family, for instance, makes sure to watch the Spring Festival Gala each year. While many aspects of Chinese culture definitely exist in Vancouver, there are also certain ways that the Chinese and Canadian cultures have mixed to create something new and special. Many children of Chinese immigrants, like myself, study in English at school and speak Chinese at home, leading to fluency (流利) in both languages. Chinese communities also celebrate Canadian holidays, like Halloween, which are not often celebrated in China. Canadian culture has even taken on some Chinese foods and language. Chinese dishes are very popular throughout Canada, with many people eager (渴望的) to try them. More and more non-Chinese Canadians are learning the language in order to enjoy Chinese holiday celebrations and communicate with their Chinese peers. As someone who grew up Chinese-Canadian, I am very proud of my unique background and how it has made me the person I am today. 25. According to the article, what are Chinese immigrants in the writer’s community like? A. They seem too busy to stop for a chat. B. Elderly people prefer to stay in care homes. C. They stick to many Chinese traditions and values. D. Their lifestyles remain unchanged after moving to Canada. 26. What does the underlined word “commemorated” probably mean? A. started B. spread C. described D. celebrated 27. How do children of Chinese immigrants get used to their lives in Canada? A. They prefer Canadian foods to Chinese foods. B. They speak both English and Chinese well. C. They spend more time with non-Chinese Canadians. D. They celebrate Western holidays instead of Chinese ones. 28. What does the author think of Canadians? A. They are open to Chinese culture. B. Many look down on Chinese immigrants. C. They usually do better than Chinese people at school. D. They are unhappy with the influence of Chinese culture. C However exciting space travel sounds, astronauts must still suffer with bad food. Now, food in space has to be dehydrated (使脱水) or pre-cooked and stored. This means astronauts aren’t really eating fresh food. New technology may change this. Scientific American reports that a specially-designed oven will be sent into space this autumn with NASA’s NG-12 cargo (货物) mission (太空飞行任务). Far from the common vacuum-packed (真空包装的) meals, astronauts may get to enjoy freshly baked cookies before the end of 2019. Why aren’t they baking cookies in space already? For one thing, there’s the risk of a fire. Engineers also have to overcome the challenge of microgravity (微重力), which prevents heat from circling inside ovens the same way it does on Earth. Astronauts will still have to wait a while before they can have their cookies, though. After baking, the results will be sent back to Earth for safety testing. If successful, this will be the first oven to bake food in space. “I believe ... that will be game-changing for both science and astronauts,” food technology researcher Maeena Naman Shafiee told Scientific American. One of the main driving forces behind this project has been NASA’s 2018 research into the effects of “confinement (封闭) and isolation (隔离)”. Unlike on the International Space Station (ISS), astronauts traveling out of Earth’s orbit (轨道) may not be able to speak to their loved ones on future missions, which could lead to negative feelings. It’s hoped that the chance to bake and sense familiar smells can bring joy to crews (宇航人员). “Is the ISS going to smell like fresh-baked cookies? We don’t know,” said NanoRacks’ communications manager Abby Dickes. “But that’s a feeling we all know and love ... that will make someone feel at home.” Baking cookies in space would mark an important step, offering a small comfort in the difficult and unfamiliar environment of space travel. Astronauts have already grown plants aboard the ISS. With commercial (商业的) space travel now being planned, who knows what other developments may surprise us in the future? 29. What can the new technology help astronauts to do in space? A. Enjoy fresh cookies. B. Store more food. C. Quickly prepare food. D. Cook many different kinds of home-made meals. 30. Why is it difficult to bake cookies in space? A. It’s difficult and costly to send food into space. B. Microgravity stops food from staying in one place. C. Baking cookies in space would pollute the spaceships. D. It is hard to heat food properly because of microgravity. 31. What was the main purpose of the cookie project? A. To improve astronauts’ health. B. To make improvements in space travel. C. To make space travel more comfortable for astronauts. D. To encourage more people to travel to space. D While walking outside one morning, I saw the most beautiful thing ever. It was early, and I was walking on dewy (带露水的) grass down to the horse stables (马厩) – my mind on the day’s chores. Suddenly a blazing (耀眼的) flash erupted (爆发) straight from the ground, about 15 feet in front of me, and shot up into the sky. Its brilliance (光彩) stopped me dead. What could make such a bright light? Could it be a diamond? I waited to see if it would repeat, but it didn’t. I walked slowly toward it, but saw nothing. I stared down at the grass, searching for gold or some kind of metal – again, nothing. I dropped down to my knees for a closer look. Suddenly, I saw it. The rising sun hit the grass’ dewdrops at the perfect angle (角度), sending brilliant light into the sky. It was as if I had just discovered a tiny new world. It was incredible! How could such a powerful flash come from something so small? On another day, I would have crushed (压坏) it under my feet. It was as though the unseen world was giving me a heads-up. “Hello, look at what’s around you,” it said. I’ve never forgotten that moment. So next time you’re out, take some time to notice nature, whose beauty most of us never even see. Our world contains so much beauty if we would just take time to admire it. Look at the brilliant colors and detailed patterns of small flowers that cover playing fields – we walk all over them without a second look. Watch a bee harvesting pollen (花粉), so busy with a purpose, or tiny ants going about their day, or birds singing and fluffing (抖动) their wings. Stop and stare at the beautiful colors of practically any flower on Earth. All of these natural creations are breathtaking (令人惊叹的) – if only we took the time to notice them. Appreciate (欣赏) nature, and you’ll find a new secret each day to keep in your heart. It’s one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. Choose the best answer: 32. How did the author feel when he discovered that dew made the flash? A. Disappointed. B. Bored. C. Surprised. D. Satisfied. 33. What does the underlined word “heads-up” in Paragraph 5 probably mean? A. Lesson. B. Message. C. Hope. D. Break. 34. What do you think the writer used to be like? A. He was probably busy with his life. B. He was dying to make good money. C. He probably didn’t live a good life. D. He didn’t like plants or animals. 35. What is the main purpose of this article? A. To tell people the secrets hidden in nature. B. To show that small things can be powerful. C. To stress the importance of living a comfortable life. D. To encourage people to enjoy the beauty of nature.
