We would start out on a well-traveled highway from the city.‎ Smoke would fill the air as we drove through the country. Leaves which had been rich in color were now being burned along with dead brush under the watchful eye of someone who waved as we drove by. Chimney smoke reminded us the area we were visiting was colder than the city, and fireplaces in homes were heated as the months would soon turn to cooler winter days. While riding along the country road, the trees stood tall, heavily decorated with a mass of fallen leaves that lay on the ground against their big trunks.‎ Upon arrival, our grandparents always put out a pumpkin flashing with a smile. Grandpa made a supply of pumpkin pie and cooked the seeds with salt for us to eat. Often the small town would have a homecoming celebration on Saturday morning, and we'd eagerly walk through two blocks to the main street area where the school band would start off the festivities.‎ All of these things are safely guarded in the place where memories are stored, as time goes by and the events of days past become more precious to me. When I got married and we raised our family, fall trips to pumpkin farms became a yearly event to my husband and our children. Each generation does things differently, and each child has their own ways to find their favorite ‎ memories. Whenever I drive along a country road, I often picture scenes from the small towns in Michigan, and the places where a simple beauty combines with so much love. ‎ ‎24. Yet something was missing from both six-member teams: girls. This isn't an uncommon occurrence at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). But it is a problem.‎ Girls are under represented at math competitions, generally. The American Invitation Mathematics Exam (AIME) is a program of American Mathematics Competition (AMC). Participation in it is by invitation only. Of the 3, 223 students who took part in the event, this year, roughly ‎14 in every 100 participants were girls.‎ These numbers are striking because girls can be just as good at math as boys are. But ‎ somehow, many girls pick up the idea that math isn't for them. And not only do they enter competitions less often than boys do, but they also are less likely to pursue math-related careers. In fact, just one in every four U. S.‎ workers in math and computer-science fields is a woman.‎ When it comes to girls and women being under-represented in math, Randall Cone says, "The trouble is a cultural one. it's a personal view thing. He is a mathematician and computer scientist at Salisbury University in Maryland. He said, "This view affects how many women study advanced math and find jobs in fields that rely on math skills."‎ But the problem is more complex. In 2016, two researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge investigated why fewer girls than boys rise to the top levels of math competitions. They looked at data from AMC events. Hoping to better understand this gender(性别)gap, they focused on high-achievers. A gender gap in math indeed exists around the world, they found. However, they were not ready to say for sure why his might be. In fact, the problem is likely due to many things. But peer(同辈) pressure may play a role. It might dissuade girls from joining math clubs or pursuing other activities that could help them become math superstars.‎ ‎28. How many girls took part in AIME this year?‎ A. About 100. ‎ B. About 450.‎ C. About 1, 500.‎ D. About 3, 223‎ ‎29. What does the underlined word "striking" in Paragraph 3 mean?‎ A. Great.‎ B. Meaningful.‎ C. Enough.‎ D. Unusual.‎ ‎30. What does Randall Cone agree?‎ A. Personal views have a great effect on how to study math better.‎ B. Girls are unwilling to study advanced math because of cultural customs.‎ C. Girls' own ideas stand in the way of their studying advanced math.‎ D. Cultural trouble stops women from finding jobs relying on math skills.‎ ‎31. What can we learn from the last paragraph?‎ A. The gender gap in America is more complex than that in other countries.‎ B Peer pressure is one of the factors in causing the gender gap in math.‎ C. Researchers have found the reasons why girls behave badly in math.‎ D. Girls refuse to join clubs and activities to become math superstars.‎ D Some kids who have a hard time to concentrate in class may have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity disorder(注意力缺陷症), or ADHD. At least‎7 In every100 children may have this condition. Medicines and behavioral therapy can help treat the symptoms of this disorder. But scientists wanted to know what was behind it. Now, using brain imaging, they have just turned up five areas of the brain linked with symptoms of ADHD. At least two of those regions are smaller in kids with ADHD than in those without the disorder.‎ Using magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)(磁共振成像), the researchers scanned participants brains and found that the size of five brain areas were smaller in kids with ADHD. The size of the entire brain also was smaller in this group. But such changes only appeared in children under age 15. No such differences showed up in adults with ADHD.‎ The specific brain areas that differed in size in kids with and without ADHD could help explain some of the disorder's symptoms. One affected area is the amygdala (扁桃体).The amygdala is the hot seat for emotions. A smaller amygdala might explain problems of "children being easily frustrated, angry or bad-tempered," says study coauthor Philip Asherson.‎ The other four affected areas, as Asherson explains, all play a big role in attention. "If something is very interesting, "he says, "Most people with ADHD can focus on it. But once the initial interest goes, things start to become a little more boring." It's very hard for kids with ADHD to stay focused on things that they do not find interesting, he says.‎ What might explain the size differences in these brain regions? It seems that it's hard to figure it out. Affected children might have had delays in brain development as they were growing. what's clear is that the drugs given to treat ADHD did not cause these changes. Children who had taken these drugs had similar reductions in brain size as those who hadn't taken the drugs. ‎ ‎32. What did scientists wonder about ADHD?‎ A. When people got it.‎ B. How to treat it.‎ C. Who got it easily.‎ D. What caused it.‎ ‎33. What is the benefit of scientists' research?‎ A. It tells people about the disorder's symptoms.‎ B. It can get kids away from ADHD.‎ C. It shows why kids can't control their memories.‎ D. It helps kids brains grow.‎ ‎34. What does Asherson think makes affected kids unable to focus?‎ A. The injury of their brain areas.‎ B. The loss of their initial interest.‎ C. The removal of the encouragement.‎ D. The disability to control their feeling.‎ ‎35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?‎ A. Children with ADHD grow more slowly.‎ B. Children are more likely to get ADHD than adults.‎ C. The factors causing the brain's size difference are uncertain.‎ D. The differences of size in affected brain regions are unknown.‎ 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Learning vocabulary is essential, especially for kids who are in school. 36 Some words are easier to learn than others. As a parent, you can help your child learn vocabulary words in a fun way. Follow these tips to help your child learn words:‎ ‎37 Set a time for studying and make it a point to follow it. It will be best to study the vocabulary words little by little rather by learning them all at once in one go. Write down all the words on a piece of paper, together with the right spelling and meaning of each word.‎ Write the words down. Ask your children to write the words down over and over. Some people find this trick more useful when learning. 38 Another activity that you can do is say the definition out loud and ask your children to identify the word. This is good practice for the vocabulary.‎ Use the words in a sentence. Do this activity with your children as a review for the words.‎ ‎ Say the word and tell your children to use it in a meaningful sentence.
