Although I agree that the town is short of car parks, this idea would be improper. In the first place, the wood is an area of natural beauty. There are many ancient trees of an unusual kind. I often go there for a picnic or just to relax at weekends. The wood is, without doubt,a natural home for birds, animals and insects. If the trees were cut down, many species would be lost. Furthermore, the wood is right in the centre of a heavilypollutedpart of town. The treeshelp to make the air cleaner. The council (地方议会)says they are worried about global warming, yet they wish to cut down trees which help reduce the build-up of gases that lead to global warming because they feed on carbon dioxide. Besides, that area also suffers from high noise levels frompassing trucks and the railway line. The trees help reduce the noise levels and do a lot of good to the whole environment. In my opinion, cutting down the wood would be stupid and pointless. A car park may well attract shoppers to the town and increase the shopkeepers’ trade. However, a beautiful part of our town would be destroyed. I would be very interested in hearing what your other readers think. Yours faithfully, Roland Chang 21. What has made Roland Chang feel worried? A. That the town is short of car parks. B. That shoppers park their cars badly. C. That there are few parks in the town. D. That a wood in the town might disappear. 22. In Paragraph 2, Roland Chang mainly talksabout . A. the importance of the wood B. the history of the town C. the species in the wood D. global warming 23. Roland Chang wrote the letter mainly to . A. introduce a park B. make a suggestion C. express thankfulness D. send his congratulations 24. To whom is Roland Chang probably writing? A. A magazine. B. A close friend. C. The shopkeepers. D. The town council. B What makes one person have more accidents than another? Most people would say that it’s to do with taking risks. Take fewer risks and you’ll have fewer accidents. But is taking risks really a matter of choice? Some experts believe that whether or not you take risks in life has a lot to do with your upbringing (养育,培养) and, some believe, with your birth order. Parents are often stricter and more careful with their first child, and so first-born children tend to grow up taking fewer risks. Parents are often more relaxed with a second or third child, so these children tend to take more risks. But why do children tend to have more accidents than adults? During childhood the body grows very quickly. There seem to be periods in these years when our brain and body are at different stages of development. Our arms are longer than the brain thinks they are, so we knock things over; our legs are longer than the brain believes, so we trip over easily. Besides, the research suggests the more time a child spends watching TV, the less they are developing their physical co-ordination (协调) skills. It gives the child a false sense of how the world works and of how much danger it contains. If a child doesn’t run around a lot, they don’t begin to understand that the world is full of physical risks. So, what about adults? Some studies have shown that life in this world is a little difficult for left-handed people. As we know, we live in a right-handed world. Everything --- from cars to door handles, from children’s toys to engineering tools and equipment --- is made by right-handed people. Therefore, left-handed children and adults are more likely to have accidents because the modern world is not designed for them. 25. Different from the first child, a second one tends to _______. A. become ill more easily B. have more accidents C. learn more quickly D. make more friends 26. By saying “Our arms are longer than the brain thinks they are”, the author means that ________. A. it is very easy for children to take risks B. our brain develops faster than the arms do C. children often do more exercises than adults D. it is important to give children a balanced diet 27. Which of the following may have more accidents? A. Right-handed people. B. Children who often run around. C. Left-handed people. D. Children who seldom watch TV. C I had often dreamt of the possibility of spending a year away from my hometown of Leeds in England, living in a foreign country. By the time I was old enough, however, I thought that my language was going to hold me back. However, luckily for me, Leeds University, where I was studying at the time, made it possible for any student, even people like myself speaking only one language, to study abroad. Before I knew it I was boarding a plane for Salzburg, Austria. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect of the experience ahead of me but I was prepared to accept the challenge. The university was quite small but the classes were large. Also, Austrian students usually take five years to complete their courses, so studying was somewhat more relaxed than at home. Austrian students go home quite often, too. Therefore, the foreign students had to socialise with each other quite a lot, which didn’t help our language skills. Salzburg itself is a picture-postcard Austrian city. It is also famous for being the birthplace of Mozart and the setting for The Sound of Music. As a result, it is usually very busy with tourists. I also found that it doesn’t have a lot going on for young people, in comparison to Leeds. There were, however, many advantages to living in Salzburg. For example, get on a train and you can be in Prague, Rome or Krakow within a matter of hours. By the end of my year in Salzburg, I had visited eight other countries in Europe. After spending a year overseas, I went back to my course in Leeds much more focused on what I wanted to get out of my last year and more appreciative of the opportunities university provides. The year in Salzburg really showed me that you get a lot more out of a place when you live there compared to when you are just travelling through. I’d recommend all students to spend a year studying abroad if they can. 28. In the author’s opinion, what may have prevented his studying abroad? A. His not being old enough. B. His fearing the culture shock. C. His becoming homesick easily. D. His not knowing a foreign language. 29. Compared with Leeds University, the university in Salzburg _____. A. provides more social events B. has longer university years C. has more foreign students D. offers more small classes 30. One advantage the author mentions about Salzburg is that _____. A. it’s a good location for travelling B. it has a high-speed rail network C. it’s the hometown of Mozart D. it’s full of foreign tourists 31. What does the author think of his experience of studying abroad? A. He benefited a lot from it. B. He regretted studying abroad. C. It was far from what he expected. D. It badly affected his studies at home. D The famous website known as Facebook began as a Harvard University dropoutˈs hobby. It was once limited to university students, but it has now become the largest social networking website in the world. It is a good way for old friends to find each other and for new friends to meet. Facebook was started in 2004 and was then a site that only students with an email address ending in “edu” could join. It was like being part of a huge but exclusive club. College students throughout the USA joined the website to create large networks. As Facebookˈs popularity grew, its founder, Mark Zuckerberg, realized even more people would love to sign up for the service. In 2006, Facebook opened its membership to anyone with an email address. Facebook experienced another increase in its popularity. In just minutes, anyone can sign up for the service and start enjoying photos or videos. Most new members also enjoy searching for friends they lost touch with years ago. Whether they knew each other from elementary, middle, high school or college, people around the world reconnect using Facebookˈs simple tools. Facebook also includes many specialized features. Members write on a friendˈs “wall”, a special part of each personˈs page. Friends post short public messages on each otherˈs “walls”, or they can send private (私密的) “messages”. Facebook members also “poke (戳)”each other. Sending a“poke”to a friend is like saying“Iˈm thinking of you”. Like a real-life poke, a “poke” on Facebook shows you want someoneˈs attention. Members also send “gifts”.“Gifts” are little icons (图标) of things you might really give. Members can buy these icons at a low price and send them, showing their appreciation. 32. What does the underlined word “exclusive” in Paragraph 2 mean? A. Available only to some people. B. Teaching you something modern. C. Strange and difficult to understand. D. Supporting new ideas and methods. 33. How did Mark Zuckerberg increase Facebookˈs popularity? A. By advertising it online. B. By working with schools. C. By making it open to any email user. D. By sharing studentsˈ photos and videos. 34. Paragraph 3 mainly talks about _____. A. some ways of using Facebookˈs tools B. what people can learn from Facebook C. how people make friends on Facebook D. some features that make Facebook popular 35. If a Facebook member wants to get noticed by a friend, he can _____. A. send a“gift” B. send a“poke” C. write on the“wall” D. send long“messages” 三、阅读七选五(本大题共 5 小题,共 50.0 分) Although problems are a part of our lives,it certainly doesn’t mean that we let them rule our lives forever.
