I was living in Conyers, Georgia the summer it all happened. I was a second grader, but my best friend Stephanie was only in the first grade. Both of our parents were at work and most of the time they let us go our own way. It was a hot afternoon and we decided to have an adventure in Stephanie's basement. As I opened the basement door, before us lay the biggest room, full of amazing things like guns, dolls, and old clothes. I ran downstairs, and spotted a red steel can. It was paint. I looked beyond it and there lay even more paint in bright colors like purple, orange, blue and green. "Stephanie, I just found us a project for the day. Get some paintbrushes. We are fixing to paint." She screamed with excitement as I told her of my secret plans and immediately we got to work. We gathered all the brushes we could find and moved all of our materials to my yard. There on the road in front of my house, we painted big stripes (条纹) of colors across the pavement (人行道). Stripe by stripe, our colors turned into a beautiful rainbow. It was fantastic! The sun was starting to sink. I saw a car in the distance and jumped up as I recognized the car. It was my mother. I couldn't wait to show her my masterpiece. The car pulled slowly into the driveway and from the look on my mother's face, I could tell that I was in deep trouble. My mother shut the ear door and walked towards me. Her eyes glaring, she shouted, "What in the world were you thinking? I understood when you made castles out of leaves, and climbed the neighbors' trees, but this! Come inside right now!" I stood there glaring back at her for a minute, angry because she had insulted (侮辱) my art. "Now go clean it up!" Mother and I began cleaning the road. Tears ran down my cheeks as I saw my beautiful rainbow turn into black cement. Though years have now passed, I still wonder where my rainbow has gone. I wonder if, maybe when I get older, I can find my rainbow and never have to brush it away. I guess we all need some sort of rainbow to brighten our lives from time to time and to keep our hopes and dreams colorful. 21. What did the writer want to do when his mother came home? A. To introduce Stephanie to her. B. To prevent her from seeing his painting. C. To put the materials back in the yard. D. To show his artwork to her. 22. The underlined word "rainbow" in the last paragraph refers to ________. A. the rainbow in the sky B. the stripes on the pavement C. something imaginative and fun D. important lessons learned in childhood 23. It can be learned from the passage that parents should ________. A. encourage children to paint B. value friendship among children C. discover the hidden talent in children D. protect rather than destroy children's dreams B Phrases like “good sharing!” and “great job on the slide!” echo across American playgrounds. Coaches pass out ribbons to every participant. Scholar publishes a series called “I’m Special!” assuring readers that the ability to play with friends and sing songs makes them special indeed. We’ve been told that high self-esteem(自尊) is the key to children’s happiness and success, and we’ve been praising and protecting them ever since. But has the self-esteem movement gone too far? Many experts argue that instead of raising healthy high achievers, maybe we’re raising a generation of narcissists(自我陶醉者). “Our old concepts of self-esteem are old-fashioned, and parents need to send the concept to the trash heap of all things outdated and useless,” says Aaron Cooper, co-author of I Just Want My Kids to be Happy. While experts used to blame low self-esteem for everything from bad grades to criminal behavior, research has shown that inflated (膨胀的)self-esteem is more often the criminal. An article called “Rethinking Self-Esteem” by Roy made a stir when he supposed that criminals and drug abusers actually had higher self-esteem than the general population. Martin and Ervin found that the modern habit of constant praise was turning kids skeptical and unmotivated. And esteemed child development expert T. Barry recently wrote in The New York Times that the phrase “self-esteem” had lost its meaning. Parents just want their children to have a positive self-image. And while it’s easy to make fun of the extremes of the self-esteem movement, it’s difficult to walk the fine line between acquiring self-respect and self-centeredness. Anyway, make it clear that while you have expectations for their behavior, you love and accept them unconditionally. True self-esteem isn’t about a steady stream of applause; it develops when children know their limits and responsibilities are given enough opportunities to challenge themselves, and feel secure that they’re loved even when they fail. 24. What’s the purpose of using phrases like “good sharing!” and “great job on the slide!”? A. To attract readers’ attention. B. To give the author’s opinion. C. To introduce the topic. D. To tell readers the key to happiness and success. 25. According to the text, which of the following statements is true? A. Children with high esteem are likely to be high achievers. B. In children’s development high self-esteem plays a positive role. C. High self-esteem does harm to kids in a way. D. High self-esteem makes kids motivated nowadays. 26. The proper way to develop children’s true self-esteem is to_______. A. give them constant praise unconditionally. B. let them shoulder all their responsibilities. C. have high expectations for their behavior. D. offer them support even though they fail. C Word spread quickly that Park’s Hardware would be closing. Locals begged with Lin, the owner of the store, with no result. Running a small, family-owned hardware(五金器具) business was no longer a profit maker. The town’s affection for Park’s Hardware was just not enough to allow it to fight against the big warehouse stores down the road in Bangor. It’s difficult to see a hardware store go. A hardware store is special because it sells the things that allow us to DIY, and in the process improves our surroundings to suit our tastes. There are few things more satisfying than a new coat of paint on a weary wall. Some might argue this might be accomplished by shopping at the big warehouse stores. Well, maybe sometimes, but certainly not always. I remember once I was searching in one of a Bangor stores for a wireless door chime(音乐门铃) that Park’s didn’t carry. I found one, but didn’t understand the instructions on the package. I asked a clerk. The man took the package, examined it, said he didn’t know and walked away. If I were at Park’s and asked, “Lin, can you … please …?” Lin would spring into action and together we would mix and match and measure until we made it. Was it more expensive to shop at Park’s as opposed to a warehouse? In one way, yes---if I wanted to buy something big-ticket. But otherwise, no: I could buy a single screw at Park’s, and have it lovingly put in a little bag, for five cents---no charge for the accompanying pleasant conversation. At a warehouse I had no choice but to buy a box of hundred screws, and, if I were fortunate, receive at the cash register a “Have a nice day”. 27. Park’s Hardware would be closing because ___________. A. the owner was moving B. locals begged its owner C. it couldn’t earn money D. the affection was not enough 28. Why does the author write his experience in a Bangor store? A. To indicate Park’s lacked wireless door chimes. B. To describe the impolite behavior of the clerk. C. To show respect for Lin’s good manners. D. To compare different serving attitudes. 29. The underlined sentence in the last paragraph means “____________”. A. One had to pay if accompanied in the big warehouse store. B. One could have nice conversations in the big warehouse store. C. One was usually pleasantly treated in the big warehouse store. D. One was unlikely to be accompanied in the big warehouse store. 30. The author felt _________ that Park’s Hardware would be closing. A. fortunate. B. sorry C. satisfied D. affected 第二节:任务型阅读(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项多余。 What is the difference between happy people and unhappy people? 31 Read the following list of things that HAPPY people do differently from UNHAPPY people and you will know. Well, I can tell you for sure that those people who are really happy, FEAR less and LOVE a lot more. They see each moment, each challenge, each person as an opportunity to discover more about themselves and the world around them. 32 Happy people understand that you can’t really change a situation by resisting it. But they can feel better by understanding that there might be a reason for its existence. 33 But rather, they ask themselves questions like: What can I learn from this? How can I make this better? They always seem to be pleasant and hopeful no matter what happens to them. They do the things they do because of the meaning it brings into their lives and because they get a sense of purpose by doing so. 34 They care more about living a life full of meaning rather than, what in our modern society we would call, living a successful life. The fact here is that most of the time they get both, success and meaning, just because they choose to focus on doing the things they love the most. 35 They make sure that their actions bring meaning and happiness in the lives of many. They look for ways to give and to share the best of themselves with the world and to make other people happy. A. They have an ideal living and a balanced life. B. What are the things that these people do differently? C. They are kind to themselves and others and they understand the power of love. D. The things happy people do are not for themselves, but for the good of others. E. They are ready to embrace whatever lies in front of them. F. They understand that “Doing what you love is the most important for living a full life”. G. When something unpleasant happens to them, they don’t try to fight it, knowing that this will make the situation even worse. 第三部分 英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分) 第一节 完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 No one is born a winner. It was always a disaster when Rachel tried to do Art! Rachel sighed and reached out to dip her brush in some black paint and—oh, no! She knocked over the jar. The water spread across the desk and drowned the paper. Lisa called Mrs. Weston to see what Rachel had done. Rachel went red in the face. She jumped to her feet to get a cloth. Her chair fell over backwards. She turned round and her paintbrush caught Lisa across the face, giving her a black moustache. Lisa was so surprised that she fell back against a wire bookstand. It came crashing down and the books went all over the floor. How clumsy! Rachel thought as she went home on the bus. The bus stopped outside her house. She jumped up and her elbow (肘部) knocked a woman’s hat right over her eyes. Oh, no! Rachel said sorry, got off and ran indoors. Mum wasn’t in the kitchen but lay in bed as she caught an awful cold. Rachel offered to make a cup of tea but Mum would rather wait for Dad. Rachel sighed. She understood Mum was afraid she would spill (溅出) it. “But would you go to Mrs. Willow for some cold cure?” asked Mum. Rachel turned to the door at once. “But Rachel, Mrs. Willow’s house is full of beautiful things, so if she asks you to come in, you’d better say no.” Rachel sighed and ran out. Mrs. Willow was an old lady with white hair and sharp blue eyes living in an old house. She opened the door and invited her in. Rachel said why she came and that she preferred to wait outside remembering her mother’s warning. Mrs. Willow insisted Rachel come inside. Rachel took a deep breath and stepped in. Yours, Li Hua 二、读后续写 Possible Version One: There were beautiful things everywhere—pretty china figures and delicate vases. Rachel stood very still, afraid of knocking something over. Mrs. Willow handed Rachel a small brown bottle. Rachel couldn’t wait to get away, feeling any minute there would be a disaster. She thanked her and turned to the door when something brushed against her leg. Rachel was so surprised that she jumped backwards. It was a cat! But her elbow hit a vase and it fell to the floor, broken. How awkward! ( 72 words ) With a smile Mrs. Willow comforted her saying it had been broken before. Rachel sighed and stared at her. “I did, when I was young. You couldn’t have been as clumsy as I was,” Mrs. Willow said, her sharp blue eyes shining. “Keep telling yourself you are a swan and it will work.” Rachel doubtfully said that several times. After they cleared up the vase, they drank tea from china cups and ate cakes off delicate plates and Rachel didn’t break another thing. It was a kind of magic. Rachel smiled. ( 78 words ) ( With a smile Mrs. Willow comforted her saying it had been broken before. Rachel sighed and stared at her. “No worry at all. It’ll be perfect after being mended,” Mrs. Willow said, her sharp blue eyes shining. “Nobody grows up without being clumsy.” Rachel let out a long sigh and for the first time she felt good about her clumsy self. She believed what Mrs. Willow said must have the same magic as her special cold cure. To her amazement, she returned home with the bottle of medicine safe and sound. ) ( 78 words ) Possible Version Two: There were beautiful things everywhere—pretty china figures and delicate vases. All the treasures seemed to boast a long history and thus priceless. “Wow, it is really a land of wonder.” Rachel couldn’t help admiring the elegance of the china figures and vases. Mom’s words echoing in her mind, curiosity still got the upper hand. She reached for one of them, but unfortunately, the vase slipped off her hand and lay in pieces on the floor. Her heart missing a beat, she felt terribly worried. (74 words) With a smile, Mrs. Willow comforted her, saying it had been broken before. Seeing Mrs. Willow’s sharp blue eyes filled with warmth and affection, Rachel felt extremely regretful for her clumsy behavior. “If I had been more careful, the disaster wouldn’t have happened.” Rachel knew what Mrs. Willow said might be an excuse to relieve her uneasiness and embarrassment. She made a resolution in her heart that from the day on she would never be so careless and swore to be a kind and thoughtful person like Mrs. Willow. (76 words) 听力参考材料 Text 1 M: Do I need gloves? W: Well, it’s not very cold. I don’t think you need gloves. Just bring an umbrella. Look, how cloudy it is. It’s going to rain. Text 2 M: There is a lecture on French history in the hall this evening. I think you’ll be interested. W: Great! I’ve been looking forward to one like that. M: Don’t forget to go there early, or there won’t be any seats left. Text 3 W: Fasten your seat belt, please, sir. M: Thank you. But I didn’t realize we were going to land soon. Text 4 W: Don’t forget we’re meeting tomorrow morning outside the railway station at 11. M: But I’m going out with Simon tonight. We’re staying in a nightclub till 1:00 a.m. I can’t meet you until the afternoon. Two o’clock is better. W: OK. Text 5 W: I want some hand washing liquid. The chemist’s is at the other end of the shopping centre. So let’s go and look for your swimming suit first. M: Oh, yes. There’s a really nice one in the sports shop over there. W: OK. And remind me to buy something to read. The bookshop is next to the chemist’s. Text 6 W: Hi, Mark. How’re you? M: Great, Cindy. What’s new? Would you like to come in for coffee? W: I’d love to, but to tell you the truth, I’m right in the middle of making Rachel’s birthday cake, and I’m out of eggs. Do you think I could borrow a couple? M: Oh, sure. No problem. W: Yes, but 20 minutes in total, including 5 minutes for questions. So you’ll only talk for 15 minutes. M: I won’t be able to say much in that time at all. W: That’s why you have to plan what you’re going to say carefully and make sure you only include the most important information. For instance, you won’t have time to give examples. But you could give some images that show examples, without spending time talking about them. M: That’s a good idea. And the audience can look at them while I talk. Thanks a lot for your help. Text 8 M: Excuse me, Lily. Could you help me? You know we’ve got an essay to write about eating customs across the world? W: Yeah. We have to borrow some books, don’t we? The stairs are on the left as you go in, and on the other side of the building there’s the library café. It’s a good place to study with friends. M: I really prefer to study alone. W: Oh, if you like studying in a quiet place, it’s better to go upstairs, to the silent zone. It’s just on the second floor. M: OK, thanks. Text 9 M: Hi, Judy. It’s me, Peter Kent from ABC Company. I’d like to tell you that we have received the machine and are quite satisfied with it. But we find we don’t have much choice about the color. W: Sorry to hear that. We will fax you the brochure this afternoon. You may see all the models with a colored picture. M: Great. W: Can we expect an order from you? M: Yes, that’s why I’m calling. I want to order 500 machines. I wonder if you can make the delivery by the end of this month. W: Thank you so much for your order. We will have some problem delivering them by the end of this month because we don’t have enough machines. But we can deliver them early next month. M: OK. We can do with that. W: Good. I will work out the agreement this evening and would you please come over tomorrow morning to sign it? M: I’m afraid I can’t. I’ve a staff meeting to attend then. Shall we meet at lunchtime? W: Sure. Bye for now. Text 10 M: Hi, Polly, this is James. I was just ringing to check that you’re still OK to come camping with me at the weekend and tell you what I’ve planned. My parents thought it was probably better not to go too far away because the weather hasn’t been very good this week and if it rains all the time we might want to come home! They said what about if we go to the campsite just outside Guilsfield, that’s a village not far away. We can catch a bus to the village, and then we’ll walk from the bus stop to t he campsite. It’s on a farm. I stayed there once, about five years ago, with my parents and we had a car then of course, but we’ll be OK. I’ve talked to my parents about what we need to take. Well, you’ve got a tent which doesn’t weigh too much, so can you bring that? There’s no need to bring food because we can eat at the farmhouse, but we need something for boiling water for drinks. I can bring something to cook on. And I’ll bring coffee and milk. We must get the tent up before dark on Friday, which is about eight, so we must meet at the bus stop at a quarter to four so we can catch the four o’clock bus. We’ll be there by five, then. I’m so excited! Call me back soon, bye. 查看更多
