You have a job, a family and you’re about 40 years old! Welcome to your future life. Getting ready for work, you pause in front of the mirror. “Turn red,” you say. Your shirt changes from sky blue to deep red. Tiny preprogrammed electronics(智能电子元件) are re-arranged in your shirt to change its color. Looking into the mirror, you find it hard to believe you’re 40. You look much younger. With amazing advances in medicine, people in your generation may live to be 150 years old. You’re not even middle-aged! As you go into the kitchen and prepare to pour your breakfast cereal into a bowl, you hear, “To lose weight, you shouldn’t eat that.” from your shoes. They read the tiny electronic code on the cereal box to find out the nutrition details. You decide to listen to your shoes. “Kitchen, what can I have for breakfast?” A list of possible foods appears on the counter as the kitchen checks its food supplies. “Ready for your trip to space?” you ask your son and daughter. In 2005 only specially trained astronauts went into space and very few of them. Today anyone can go to space for day trips or longer vacations. Your best friend even works in space. Handing your children three strawberries each, you add, “The doctor said you need these for space travel.” Thanks to medical advances, vaccination shots(防疫针) are a thing of the past. Ordinary foods contain specific vaccines. With the strawberries in their mouths, the kids head for the front door. It’s time for you to go to work. Your car checks your fingerprints and unlocks the doors. “My office, Autopilot,” you command. Your car drives itself down the road and moves smoothly into traffic on the highway. You sit back and unroll your e-newspaper. The latest news downloads and fills the viewer. Looking through the pages, you watch the news as video film rather than read it. 21. What changes the color of your shirt? A. The mirror. B. The medicine. C. The counter. D. The shirt itself. 22. How do the shoes know that you shouldn’t eat the breakfast cereal? A.By pouring the breakfast into a bowl. B. By checking the nutrition details of the food. C.By testing the food supplies in the kitchen. D. By listening to the doctor’s advice. 23. The strawberries the children eat serve as _______. A. vaccines B. lunch C. breakfast D. nutrition B My father was a foreman of a sugar-cane plantation in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. My first job was to drive the oxen that ploughed the cane fields. I would walk behind an ox, guiding him with a broomstick. For $1 a day, I worked eight hours straight, with no food breaks. It was very tedious work, but it prepared me for life and taught me many lasting lessons. Because the plantation owners were always watching us, I had to be on time every day and work as hard as I could. I’ve never been late for any job since. I also learned about being respectful and faithful to the people you work for. More importantly, I earned my pay; it never entered my mind to say I was sick just because I didn’t want to work. I was only six years old, but I was doing a man’s job. Our family needed every dollar we could make because my father never earned more than $18 a week. Our home was a three-roomed wood shack with a dirty floor and no toilet. Nothing made me prouder than bringing home money to help my mother, father, two brothers and three sisters. This gave me self-esteem(自尊心), one of the most important things a person can have. When I was seven, I got work at a golf course near our house. My job was to stand down the fairway and spot the balls as they landed, so the golfers could find them. Losing a ball meant you were fired, so I never missed one. Some nights I would lie in bed and dreamt of making thousands of dollars by playing golf and being able to buy a bicycle. The more I dreamt, the more I thought. Why not? I made my first golf club out of guava limb(番石榴树枝) and a piece of pipe. Then I hammered an empty tin can into the shape of a ball. And finally I dug two small holes in the ground and hit the ball back and forth. I practiced with the same devotion and intensity. I learned working in the field—except now I was driving golf balls with a club, not oxen with a broomstick. 24. The writer’s first job was _______. A. to stand down the fairway at a golf course B. to watch over the sugar-cane plantation C. to drive the oxen that ploughed the cane fields D. to spot the balls as they landed so the golfers could find them 25. The underlined word “tedious” in Paragraph 2 most probably means _______. A. difficult B. unusual C. interesting D. boring 26. The writer learned that_______ from his first job. A. he should work for those who he liked most B. he should be respectful and faithful to the people he worked for C. he should never fail to say hello to his owner D. he should work longer than what he was expected 27. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A. The writer wanted to be a successful golfer. B. The writer wanted to run a golf course near his house. C. The writer was satisfied with the job he got on a plantation. D. The writer wanted to make money by guiding oxen with a broomstick. C A child who has once been pleased with a tale likes, as a rule, to have it retold in almost the same words, but this should not lead parents to treat printed fairy stories as formal texts. It is always much better to tell a story than read it out of a book, and, if a parent can produce what, in the actual situation of the time and the child, is an improvement on the printed text, so much the better. A charge made against fairy tales is that they harm the child by frightening him or making him sad thinking. To prove the latter, one would have to show in a controlled experiment that children who have read fairy stories were more often sorry for cruelty than those who had not. As to fears, there are, I think, some cases of children being dangerously terrified by some fairy story. Often, however, this arises(出现) from the child having heard the story once. Familiarity with the story by repetition turns the pain of fear into the pleasure of a fear faced and mastered. There are also people who object to fairy stories on the grounds that they are not objectively true, that giants, witches, two-headed dragons, magic carpets, etc. do not exist; and that, instead of being fond of the strange side in fairy tales, the child should be taught to learn the reality by studying history. I find such people, I must say, so peculiar(奇怪的) that I do not know how to argue with them. If their case were sound, the world should be full of mad men attempting to fly from New York to Philadelphia on a stick or covering a telephone with kisses in the belief that it was their beloved girlfriend. No fairy story ever declared to be a description of the real world and no clever child has ever believed that it was. 28. The author considers that a fairy story is more effective when _______. A. it is repeated without any change B. it is treated as a joke C. some changes are made to it by a parent D. it is set in the present 29. According to the passage, great fear can take place in a child when the story is _______. A. in a realistic setting B. told in a different way C. repeated too often D. heard for the first time 30. The advantage claimed(提出) for repeating fairy stories to young children is that it _______. A. develops their power of memory B. makes them less fearful C. makes them believe there is nothing to be afraid of D. encourages them not to have strange beliefs 31. One of the reasons why some people are not in favor of fairy tales is that _______. A. they are full of imagination B. they make teachers of history difficult to teach C. they are not interesting D. they are just made up of the stories which are far from the truth D BEIJING—Lu Na thinks that the 4,000 yuan ($630) she spent in traveling to the Republic of Korea(ROK) was worth every penny. “Apart from the exotic outfits and tasty kimchi, I really appreciated local people’s friendliness and the convenient language environment there,” said the 27-year-old woman, who traveled to the country in October 2011 and came back with bags of fashionable dresses and cosmetics. “We have provided many services to Chinese visitors, including free transport cards, handbooks for individual tourists, and more liberal visa policies.” “We believe that no country can compare with the ROK in providing services for individual Chinese travelers,” said Zhu Linlin, media manager of the Korea Tourism Organization’s Beijing branch. Favorable visa policies contribute to the popularity of the ROK as a destination for Chinese tourists. Only a passport and an ID card are needed for a Chinese citizen to get a visa to the ROK. However, some suggest that ROK hotels should provide special dining rooms for Chinese customers due to different eating habits. “ROK people often cross their legs when they have meals, but for most Chinese people, especially those who are elderly or fat, it’s very hard for them to sit cross-legged without feeling numb.” In 1998, China granted the ROK approved destination status, which allowed Chinese citizens to travel to the country in tour groups. According to statistics from China Tourism Academy, the number of Chinese tourists visiting the ROK reached more than 2 million by the end of October 2011, up 19. 9 percent compared with that of the same period last year. China recently became the Republic of Korea’s main source of foreign tourists in both number and spending. 32. What can we infer from the first paragraph? A. Lu is satisfied with her travel to ROK. B. Lu spent $4,000 on her travel to ROK. C. Lu thinks her travel to ROK cost her too much money. D. It is a waste of money to travel to ROK. 33. Lu came back with _______. A. tasty kimchi B. exotic outfits C. bags of fashionable dresses and cosmetics D. free handbooks 34. A Chinese citizen can get a visa to the ROK with _______. A. a passport B. a passport and an ID card C. a transport card and an ID card D. an ID card 35. The underlined phrase in Paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to “_______”. A. object to B. belong to C. devote to D. lead to 七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Reasons to Take Part in Student Clubs and Organizations Many college students don't know what they're missing by not taking part in the student clubs and organizations that are offered at most colleges and universities. A fish is easy to take care of, and you can leave it alone for most of the day. Text 2 W: Excuse me. Could you tell me the way to the railway station, (2) please? M: Sorry. I’m a stranger here, too. But why don’t you ask that man who is sitting in front of the grocery store? You see the store I’m talking about? The one next to the movie theater… Text 3 M: Happy birthday, honey! W: Oh, a bunch of flowers! Thank you. You’re always so sweet. M: Well, I intended to buy you a fruit cake and some apple pies from Collin Street Bakery. But they’re all sold out, so I bought you these flowers. (3) Text 4 (推断题) W: I don’t understand the math problem on the board. Can you help me? M: I’m kind of busy working on my homework. Why don’t you ask the teacher to help you? Text 5 M: Can you hold the door for a minute, Lucy? I’ve got a big bag full of books here. W: Hi, Matt. Nice to see you! Up to the fourth floor? (5) Text 6 M: Do you want to go over to John’s house tonight? W: No, I think I’m getting sick, so I should probably just stay at home and rest. M: Oh, okay. You should drink some tea and stay warm. Would you like me to make you some soup? (6) W: No, thanks. I’m not hungry. I might just go to sleep, actually. I had to get up very early this morning for a meeting. One of my co-workers seemed ill, so I might have gotten sick from her. (7) Text 7 M: I was thinking of starting my own business. I know you wanted me to take over your restaurant business, (8) but I can’t stand working in the food industry. W: OK. But what do you really want to do? M: I want to sell skateboards, clothing, and shoes. W: You want to run a clothing shop? M: No. It’s actually a skateboarding shop. W: What would make your shop different from all the others? M: I thought we could make our own T-shirts. Maybe you and dad could lend me some money first. (9) W: Sounds OK to me, but you’ll have to talk to your dad about this, too. Text 8 M: Good morning. Can I see your membership card, please? W: Well, I’m actually here to join the book club today. M: I’m really sorry. There is something wrong with the computer. If you can come back on Monday — that’s tomorrow — we can sign you up then. (10) And we have a discount on Mondays and Tuesdays. W: Oh, but I have to see the dentist tomorrow, (11) and I have a meeting to attend on Tuesday. M: In that case, you can leave your information on this piece of paper and I’ll put your application into the computer tomorrow. W: Oh, that’s wonderful! M: Which membership would you like: a one-year membership, a three-year membership, or a lifetime membership? (12) There is a special gift for the lifetime membership. W: Let me see. I think a one-year membership is right for me. Text 9 M: I lost my dog! Can you help me look for him? W: Yes, of course. When was the last time you saw him? M: I tied him up right here as I went to grab some coffee. (13) When I came back outside, he was gone. W: Okay, what does he look like? M: He’s white with black spots. He’s around 40 pounds and has short hair. (14) His name is Milo, and he always comes when he’s called. W: I’ll take the streets going to the right, and you take the streets going to the left. (15) Meet me back in front of the coffee shop in 10 minutes. If we don’t find him, we can take my car to look farther out. M: Do you think I should call the police? W: I doubt if they’ll have time to help. But I don’t think we’ll need them. Look over there in that park two blocks down! (16) M: It’s Milo! Quick, let’s run over there! (16) W: Let’s go!
