On the way home from hospital, no one said a word. One day, would I only imagine the scenery beyond the glass rather than see it? That September , I entered middle school. Most nights I had homework that included an armful of books to read. To keep up with other children, I took great trouble to finish the task. With my nose a couple of inches from the page, I was tired easily. What’s worse, after I had read several pages on my own, the words slipped off the page into inky pools. However, then I did not have audio books and electric devices like kids do now. Instead, Mum volunteered to read out loud. Mum worked part-time ,cleaned the house, cooked and spent time with Grandma. In spite of being so busy, she showed up in my room like clockwork. She put on her reading glasses. Mum always thought those glasses made her look old. To me, she looked like a teacher. In my room, Mum’s voice raced with the ticking of the clock. Being forced to focus on listening, I found a way to keep my marks up and compete with the other kids. When the teacher asked a question, I raised my hand with confidence. Teachers praised me for having a good memory. Reading removed my fear for my failing sight, reading also made me curious about other people’s challenges and how they managed. Though I could not use my eyes to fix on each passage, my mind lit up with every new book. True to what the doctor said, the worst came, but thanks to Mum, my sense of hearing now allows me to “see”. This was the most precious gift from a mother to her child. 24.Why did the author and his parents keep silent on their way back home from hospital? A.Because they all wanted to have a good rest. B.Because what the doctor said made them worried. C.Because the author didn’t do well in the exam. D.Because they focused on the scenery along the road. 25.How did the author manage to get high marks? A.By listening carefully. B.By being confident. C. By getting help from his classmates. D.By reading as many books as possible. 26.What can we learn from the passage? A.The author’s sight recovered finally. B.Reading made the author more sensitive. C.Reading made the author not worry about his sight. DThe author’s mother didn’t work to look after him.. 27.Which of the following could be the best title for the passage? A.My Eyesight Trouble B.An Unforgettable Experience C. About Mother’s Love D. With Ears Wide Open C You know the saying "You're as young as you feel." Well, there may be some truth, according to researchers at Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Ellen Langer, a Harvard psychologist who studies how the mind influences the body, and colleagues reviewed the scientific literature for evidence that a person’s perception of their age might influence their health. They published their results in the journal Perspectives on Psychological Science. In one study that Langer led, 47 women had their hair done. The women who thought their new hairdos made them look younger did look younger to objective observers, who were shown before-and-after pictures. The women who thought they looked younger also showed a drop in blood pressure. Another study involving 4,421 men found that those who became bald(秃顶)at a relatively young age were more likely to get cancer and heart disease than men who did not. Similarly, another study involving 2,017 men found that those who lost their hair early were more likely to develop heart disease. “We believe that the feelings associated with being older than one’s real age account for some of these health outcomes,” the researchers wrote. The researchers also described studies that found that women who had children later in life were more likely to be healthier and live longer than those who had children early, which they attributed to the fact that these mothers tend to spend more time with younger women. Similarly, people who marry younger partners tend to live longer than those who marry older partners, according to other studies. Taken together, the research “supports the general mind-body hypothesis(假说)that when a younger mind is prepared, a younger body can accompany it.” While the mechanism remains unclear, the researchers figured that suggestions associated with aging can “make one unconsciously or consciously aware of old age and set in motion a series of physiological processes that can have real effects on short-term and long-term health.” 28 The underlined word “perception” in Paragraph 2 means ________. A. creation B. appearance C. Influence D. view 29.Which of the following statements is true according to Paragraph 3? A. Blood pressure is highly related to hairdos. B. Getting cancer or heart disease is the cause of hair losing. C. Feeling older than real age may be tied to health problems. D. The women who love hairdos look younger than those don’t. 30.It can be inferred from Paragraph 4 that ______. A. a younger mother is more likely to live longer B. the younger one of a couple lives much longer C. People who want to live longer need to marry young D. often staying with younger people can benefit people’s health 31.The passage mainly tells us that_______. A. People’s feeling of their age may have an effect on their own health B. Getting bald too early is not good to marry young C.Women had better give birth later in their life D.Feeling younger to a couple is very important to their health D Going green seems to be a fad(时尚)for a lot of people these days. Whether that is good or bad, we can’t really say, but for the two of us, going green is not a fad but a lifestyle. On April22, 2011, we decided to go green every single day for an entire year. This meant doing 365 different green things, and it also meant challenging ourselves to go green beyond easy things. Rather than recycle and reduce our energy, we had to think of 365 different green things to do and this was no easy task. With the idea of going green every single day for a year, Our Green Year started. My wife and I decided to educate people about how they could go green in their lives and hoped we could show people all the green things that could be done to help the environment. We wanted to push the message that every little bit helps. Over the course of Our Green Year, we completely changed our lifestyle. We now shop at organic (有机的) stores. We consume less meat, choosing green food. We have greatly reduced our buying we don’t need. We have given away half of what we owned through websites. Our home is kept clean by vinegar and lemon juice, with no chemical cleaners. We make our own butter, enjoying the smell of home-made fresh bread. In our home office anyone caught doing something ungreen might be punished. Our minds have been changed by Our Green Year. We are grateful for the chance to have been able to go green and educate others. We believe that we do have the power to change things and help our planet. 32. What might be the best title for the passage? A. Protecting the Planet. B. Going Green. C. Keeping Open-minded. D. Celebrating Our Green Year. 33. It was difficult for the couple to live a green life for the whole year because_________. A. they were expected to follow the green fad B. they didn’t know how to educate other people C. they were unwilling to reduce their energy D. they needed to perform unusual green tasks 34. What did the couple do over the course of Our Green Year? A. They tried to get out of their ungreen habits. B. They ignored others’ ungreen behavior. C. They chose better chemical cleaners. D. They sold their home-made food. 35. What can we infer form the last paragraph? A. The government will give support to the green project. B. Some people disagree with the couple’s green ideas C.The couple may continue their project in the future.. D. Our Green Year is becoming a national campaign. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 A smartphones store a lot of personal data. These devices know our names, the names of our friends, our addresses and where we are right now. 36 A weather app needs to know where a person is to report the local forecast, for example. Many smartphone apps(应用程序) don’t cost anything to download and use. But don’t be fooled. There’s still a price. 37 Those same apps may often send data on to advertisers as well. Those advertisers will pay well to know how people behave and live. Once your data leave a device, you can’t get them back. And that data theft may not be harmless. However, those data may tell when someone leaves home and when they get back. 38 Social media sites often have access to a user’s images and posts. Recently a new online tool has been developed to track the misuse of private data. 39 It tells people when their apps are sending data, which can help spot misuse. SPEProxy identifies the misuse of data using an approach that has already been used to diagnose illness. In the clinical field, a medical software is used to collect data from a patient. Then it compares them to those typical of many possible illnesses to make a diagnosis. Right now, people can only track data with the new tool by going to a website. 40 It’s also a bit awkward to use. People may not want to go to the trouble of getting online to track their data. A more convenient version that people could install on their phones is in urgent need. A. They can show how and where people spend their days. B. It is called SPEProxy. C.That means it’s limited. D. It is more than convenient to use in computers. E.Your privacy is what’s paying for it. F. Some apps use those data to do their job.
