Step 5‎ B In the fall of my junior year, my mother announced that she had signed me up for a volunteering project in Bolivia for my New Year’s break. My first thought was, “That’s impossible! I want a new computer and a new dress. How will I ever get all those gifts down there?” I was careful not to say these selfish things out loud. Was I really going to spend my New Year’s break working in an orphanage(孤儿院) in one of the poorest countries in the world?‎ The day finally came anyway. The children must have heard the engine and grinding(摩擦声) of the bus tires on the rough road, for as the bus turned the corner, I could see no fewer than fifty sets of clear, brown eyes looking eagerly at us. Immediately sprinting(奋力地跑) toward us, one little girl, Naomi, leapt into my arms and kissed my face before even saying, “Hola!” Excited by our arrival, the children directed us to the community center, really a basketball court, which had been decorated with colorful paper. Dressed in traditional Bolivian skirts, the teenagers sang a song as the younger children danced. Having obviously practiced for a long time, they proudly gave us this wonderful show.‎ The orphanage included ten “casas,” each housing a “family” of eight children. One afternoon I was invited to Casa San Francisco to eat lunch with one of the “families.” As I was served my plate, three-year-old Maria spilled her apple juice all over my food. Knowing not enough food was left in the pot, Eduardo, the eldest boy, offered me his. When I refused, he switched the plates anyway.‎ Not until several weeks after our return did I realize, “Hey, I didn’t get that computer or the new dress.” At the same time, I realized how much I might have missed had I not gone on my Bolivia trip. The gifts I received from the orphaned children added not a single pound to the baggage I carried home, for the lasting gifts they gave me were those of joy, of friendship, and of growing up.‎ ‎24. How did the author feel when her mother announced the New Year’s break arrangement? ‎ A. Scared and surprised. B. Calm and relaxed.‎ C. Joyful and excited. D. Upset and disappointed.‎ ‎25. What can be learned about the children from Paragraph 2?‎ A. They were practising for a big show.‎ B. They were watching a basketball game.‎ C. They welcomed the volunteers enthusiastically.‎ D. They helped the volunteers’ bus get through the rough road.‎ ‎26. Which of the following words can best describe Eduardo?‎ A. Talented and talkative. B. Generous and considerate.‎ C. Cautious and brave. D. Reliable and devoted.‎ ‎27. What’s the main idea of the text?‎ A. An unforgettable sightseeing tour in ‎Bolivia B. Real friendship found in an orphanage C. A different kind of New Year’s break D. My family’s volunteering tradition C Social media is changing everything in trade. Even reserved Britons are losing their traditional dislike to losing temper, and using social media to complain about bad service provided by businesses. That’s what a survey by the institute‎ of ‎Customer Service suggests. They analyzed data from 200 organizations, including banks, companies and retailers and have concluded that customers now expect “dialogue” from companies. If a shop assistant is rude and the price is too high, the unhappy customer, especially the young one will take to microblog sites to criticize(批评) that company.‎ The trend(趋势) has increased over the last few years. Thomas Brown, of the Institute‎ of ‎Marketing, observed that big companies had previously enjoyed a “controlled” conversation with customers through advertising and for a long time, unhappy customers could only express themselves through letters or calling a customer relations team. But with the Internet, it’s a whole new ballgame: which company can control online chat? Brown continues: “ Now there’s a risk that you could have excited customers talking to each other and it can get out of hand very quickly.”‎ Brown warns that there’s a concern by businesses about the time and resources it takes them to properly manage social media. Big organizations which aren’t monitoring it 24 hours a day could log off at the end of the trade day, only to log in(登陆) the next morning to find customers’ dissatisfaction behind a certain issue. But it’s not all terrible future for businesses in this new age of intense connectivity. The old word of mouth recommendation has a new platform too. Perhaps it’s more true today than ever before: a satisfied customer is a company’s best advertisement. ‎ ‎28. What does the underlined word “reserved” in paragraph 1 mean?‎ A. slow and unwilling to show feelings or express opinions B. being kept for someone rather than given or sold to anyone else C. will become very angry easily D. continuing for ever and never changing ‎29. What did customers use to do if a shop assistant was rude?‎ A. Complain through letters. B. Call the advertising company.‎ C. Log onto microblog sites. D. Criticize that company in public.‎ ‎30. What are companies concerned about?‎ A. Bad behaviors of all the employees.‎ B. Lack of advertising.‎ C. “Controlled” conversations.‎ D. Time and resources to manage social media.‎ ‎31. What is the best title for the text?‎ A. A Survey on Companies B. Social Media And Business Service C. Complaints on the Internet D. Log in Or Log off D When Pope Francis recently told a reporter that he stopped watching television 25 years ago, it reminded me that several of my friends had gone TV-free as well. They had really quit TV? It seemed fairly unlikely.‎ And so it was. It turned out that most Americans who “cut the cord(电线)” are not getting rid of their TV sets. What they're doing, like my friends, is canceling their cable or satellite TV contracts(合同). Not such a major move, but nice cost savings. You can still watch lots of TV programming these days on your computer or TV by subscribing to(订阅) an online streaming service. Netflix is currently the most popular of those.‎ There is, however, a small group of the population that has adopted a true zero-tolerance principle when it comes to television. Listen to what was said about TV by none other than Randy Pausch, the Carnegie Mellon professor. In 2010 following his terminal cancer diagnosis, he called out TV as the enemy of productivity. “If you really want to have time back in your life,” he said, “unplug(拔插头) you TV and put it in a closet and put a blanket over it.”‎ My friend Laura Schiff, a former journalist, appreciates that point all too well. “Television always felt like a waste of time,” she told me the other day. When her old TV failed, she decided not to replace it. “No regrets. Without TV I get a much ‎ deeper understanding of the world and what's going on around us.” The amazing irony(讽刺):Schiff's late father, Arthur Schiff was the genius behind such memorable TV marketing catchphrases(广告语) as “Act now and you'll also receive.” and “But wait, there's more!”‎ For some Americans, there is no “more”. There is already too, too much—too much stupid programming, too much commercials for products no one needs. Most of all, “TV robs us of our precious time,” as author Joshua Fields Millbum said in his book, Everything That Remains.‎ ‎32. We learn from paragraph 2 that most Americans who cut the cord .‎ A. stop watching TV completely ‎ B. get rid of their TV sets C. canceling their TV contracts to save money ‎ D. no longer watch TV programs on computer ‎33. According to the passage, Netflix is probably .‎ A. a popular online streaming service ‎ B. a satellite TV station C. a new brand of TV sets ‎ D. a most popular TV program currently ‎34. Why was Randy Pausch against television?‎ A. It was a waste of money. ‎ B. He had little time to spare for it.‎ C. It was a waste of productive time. ‎ D. He suffered from headaches because of it.‎ ‎35. We can infer from the last paragraph that some Americans .‎ A. demand changes in television B. will never believe TV catchphrases C. spend more time watching TV D. might not choose to watch TV 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选岀能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ As the world puts increased pressure on kids to be winners, parents tend to make it their responsibility to help their kids succeed in every possible way. But now there’s a growing realization among teachers and other experts who work with children that kids increasingly need help in learning how to fail. So how do parents teach ‎ kids to fail? The following steps may be of help.‎ Show your understanding ‎ Understand your child when he’s disappointed and frustrated. Don’t just say, “It’s okay. You’ll do better next time.” It’s useless to brush off a child’s feelings of frustration and disappointment. 36 For example, “I see you’re really disappointed, and I know you really wanted to do better.”‎ Make yourself a model ‎ It’s wise for you to first explain that failure is a part of life and you can share examples of “failures” you’ve ever had, such as losing out on a promotion at work or failing to accomplish an important task. 37 ‎ Make it a teachable moment ‎ 38 You and your child can try to come up with what he can do next time for a better chance at success. For instance, can he study differently or talk to the teacher about the problem? Can he change something in the future? It’s all about problem-solving.‎ ‎ 39 ‎ It can be very tough to watch your child fall down, but he can only learn how to handle disappointment through trial and error. As books like The Blessings of a Skinned Knee and the newly released How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go underline, parents must stop lending a helping hand. 40 ‎ Learning to fail can be painful. But kids will only succeed if they can acquire the skills to handle whatever life throws on their way.‎ A. Step back and allow kids to fail.‎ B. Watch your child fall and give a hand.‎ C. A child’s failure is a chance for parents to teach problem-solving skills.‎ D. Afterwards, you can model how to handle the disappointment in your life.‎ E. Instead, you need to change the language to show your true understanding.‎ F. They must learn to handle their own disappointment through trial and error.‎ G. Otherwise, you rob children of the very experiences that require problem-solving.‎ 第三部分 英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分)‎ 第一节 完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。‎ Years ago, when I was working as psychologist(心理学家) at a children’s institution in England, a boy showed up in the waiting room. Are you not able to understand this?”‎ A little later the father went to his room and came back with an old tattered (发皱的) diary, which he had maintained since his son was born.‎ On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page.‎ When the son read it, the following words were written in the diary:‎ ‎“Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa, when a crow was sitting on the window. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. His father would patiently answer the same question all 23 times without feeling irritation while his father asked him the same question just four times! The boy thought to himself: if I attain old age, how will my son look at me? Will he think of me as burden? Will he shout at me because of my poor sight, poor hearing or poor understanging?‎ Paragraph 2: Feeling ashamed,  the son got down on his knees before his father. He made an apology to his father, begging his father to forgive him for his bad behavior. He said this aloud, “I promise to see you happy forever, Dad.
