No trying to make herself look better than someone else. She just always tried to do what was right and fair and it didn’t matter who was involved. Whether you were the richest person in town or the poorest, it made no difference. You were no better than anyone else. She lived in a small town where everyone knew each other, both the good and the bad. ‎ She was a real champion for those who couldn’t speak for themselves or were mistreated or taken advantage of. She was a true servant at heart, always making sure that everyone else’s needs were met before her own. In fact, she later became Mayor of her little town. I was so proud that my grandmother became the Mayor. She managed to improve the city’s water supply and was able to have the County’s first Nursing Home built in her city. Her natural abilities to serve others were just fulfilled even more as Mayor. ‎ I have always been a rather picky eater. As a young child, she noticed that I loved spaghetti. I would eat only spaghetti and I wouldn’t eat vegetables or anything else that was prepared. Rather than do what most adults would do as saying, “you eat what I prepared for you, or don’t eat at all,” she spoiled me and made spaghetti. In fact, every time we visited and ate with her, she prepared a special batch of spaghetti just for me. She remembered and she continued doing this up until the day she passed away. As I got older, I noticed that not only did she prepare spaghetti for me, but she prepared a special desert for someone else or a special vegetable for another. She wasn’t happy until she knew she had pleased someone else. ‎ I learned the real meaning of “it is more blessed to give than to receive”. ‎ ‎24. We can infer from the passage that grandmother was .‎ ‎ A. loving but strict B. considerate and helpful ‎ ‎ C. critical and selfish D. responsible but ambitious ‎ ‎25. “A rather picky eater” in Paragraph 3 refers to someone who .‎ ‎ A. eats only low calorie foods ‎ ‎ B. eats only high calorie foods ‎ ‎ C. eats only particular food and is hard to please ‎ ‎ D. eats only what he/she thinks is beneficial to his/her health ‎ ‎26. We know from the passage that .‎ ‎ A. grandmother was the first to build a Nursing Home in the world ‎ ‎ B. people were familiar with each other in the town where grandmother lived ‎ ‎ C. grandmother used to prepare spaghetti as well as a special vegetable for me ‎ ‎ D. grandmother always tried to make herself look perfect in other people’s eyes ‎ ‎27. What did the writer learn from grandmother? ‎ A. No pains, no gains. ‎ B. Practice makes perfect.‎ C. God helps those who help themselves. ‎ D. Giving rings people more pleasure than receiving.‎ C Teenagers are damaging their health by not getting enough sleep because they are distracted (分散) by electronic products in their bedrooms, according to a survey. ‎ UK advice body The Sleep Council said “junk sleep” could rival (比得上)the consumption of unhealthy junk food as a major lifestyle issue for parents of teenage children. It brings no less harm than junk food to one’s health. Its survey of 1,000 teenagers aged 12 to 16 found that 30 percent managed just 4 to 7 hours sleep as opposed to (形成对照)the recommended 8 or 9 hours by the experts. Almost a quarter said they fell asleep more than once a week while watching TV, listening to music or using other electronic products. ‎ ‎“This is an extremely worrying situation”, said Dr. Chris Idzikowski of the Edinburgh Sleep Centre. “What we are seeing is the appearance of Junk Sleep-that is sleep which is of neither the length nor quality that it should be in order to feed the brain with the rest it needs to perform properly at school. ”‎ Nearly all the teenagers had a phone, music system or TV in their bedroom, with around two-thirds possessing all three. Almost one in five of the teenage boys said the quality of their sleep had been impacted by leaving their TV or computer on. The survey also found that 40 percent of teenagers felt tired each day, with girls aged 15 to 16 doing the worst. However just 11 percent said they were bothered by the lack or quality of sleep. ‎ ‎“I’m surprised that so few teenagers make the link between getting enough good quality sleep and how they feel during the day,” Idzikowski said. “Teenagers need to wake up to the fact to feel well, perform well and look well; they need to do something about their sleep.”‎ ‎28. Which of the following is NOT true about “junk sleep”? ‎ ‎ A. It’s a kind of sleep with poor quality. ‎ ‎ B. It’s a kind of sleep with shorter hours. ‎ ‎ C. It’s mainly caused by the electronic products in the bedroom. ‎ ‎ D. It’s not as harmful as junk food to one’s health. ‎ ‎29. The underlined word “impacted” in Paragraph 4 can probably be replaced by “ ”.‎ ‎ A. affected B. improved C. destroyed D. inspired ‎ ‎30. It can be inferred from the passage that Dr. Chris Idzikowski is very about the present situation. ‎ ‎ A. worried B. satisfied C. angry D. disappointed ‎ ‎31. What should be the best title for this passage? ‎ ‎ A. Junk Food and Junk Sleep ‎ ‎ B. A Survey about Junk Sleep ‎ C. How to Avoid Junk Sleep ‎ D. Junk Sleep Is Damaging Teenagers’ Health D Death is natural, but do you have any idea of the process of dying? Modern scientists divide the process of dying into two phases --- clinical or temporary death and biological death. Clinical death occurs when the vital organs, such as the heart or lungs, have ceased to function, but have not suffered permanent damage. The organism can still be revived(复活). Biological death occurs when changes in the organism lead to the “breaking up” of vital cells and tissues. Death is then unchangeable and final.‎ Scientists have been seeking a way to prolong the period of clinical death so that the organism can remain alive before biological death occurs. The best method developed so far involves cooling of the organism, combined with narcotic sleep. By slowing down the body’s metabolism(新陈代谢), cooling delays the processes leading to biological death.‎ To illustrate how this works, scientists performed an experiment on a six-year-old female monkey called Keta. The scientist put Keta to sleep with a narcotic. Then they surrounded her body with ice-bags and began checking her body temperature. When it had dropped to 28 degrees the scientists began draining blood from an artery. The monkey’s blood pressure decreased and an hour later both the heart and breathing stopped: clinical death set in. For twenty minutes Keta remained in this state. Her temperature dropped to 22 degrees. At this point the scientists pumped blood into an artery in the direction of the heart and started artificial breathing. After two minutes Keta’s heart became active once more. After fifteen minutes, spontaneous(自发的)breathing began, and after four hours Keta opened her eyes and lifted her head. After six hours, when the scientists tried to give her a penicillin injection, Keta seized the syringe and ran with it around the room. Her behavior differed little from that of a healthy animal.‎ ‎32. Scientists try to make the time of clinical death longer in order to __________.‎ ‎ A.delay the coming of biological death.‎ ‎ B.bring vital cells and tissues back to active life.‎ ‎ C.cool the organism.‎ ‎ D.slow down the body’s metabolism.‎ ‎33. All of the following indicate that the monkey has almost restored to her original physical state except the fact that___________.‎ A. her heart beat again.‎ B. she rejected a penicillin injection.‎ C. she regained her normal breath.‎ D. she acted as lively as a healthy monkey.‎ ‎34. For a person who suffers from the clinical death, _________.‎ A. his most important organs are damaged.‎ C. he can not avoid final death.‎ B. he is still very much alive D. he still has the possibility of getting back to life.‎ ‎35. How did the scientists put Keta into clinical death?‎ A. By lowing her blood pressure and stopping her heart from beating.‎ B. By surrounding her body with ice-bags and draining her blood.‎ C. By putting her to sleep, lowering her temperature and draining her blood.‎ D. By draining her blood, lowering her blood pressure and stopping her breathing.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ How to Make Plans Most people get scared when talking about planning or writing plans. 1 And you need to plan for success as planning really works and inspires you to go straight ahead.
