While waiting for a bus to the office where he was supposed to be interviewed, he saw an elderly man wildly kicking the tyre of his car. Obviously there was something wrong with the car. Jimmy immediately went up to lend him a hand. When Jimmy finished working on the car, the old man asked him how much he should pay for the service. Jimmy said there was no need to pay him; he just helped someone in need, and he had to rush for an interview. Then the old man said, “Well, I could take you to the office for your interview. It’s the least I could do. Please, I insist.” Jimmy agreed. Upon arrival, Jimmy found a long line of applicants waiting to be interviewed. Jimmy still had some grease on him after the car repair, but he did not have much time to wash it off or have a change of shirt. One by one, the applicants left the interviewer’s office with disappointed looks on their faces. Finally his name was called. The interviewer was sitting on a large chair facing the office window. Rocking the chair back and forth, he asked, “Do you really need to be interviewed?” Jimmy’s heart sank. “With the way I look now, how could I possibly pass this interview?” He thought to himself. Then the interviewer turned the chair and to Jimmy’s surprise, it was the old man he helped earlier in the morning. It turned out he was the General Manager of the company. “Sorry I had to keep you waiting, but I was pretty sure I made the right decision to have you as part of our workforce before you even stepped into this office. I just know you’d be a trustworthy worker. Congratulations!” Jimmy sat down and they shared a cup of well-deserved coffee as he landed himself a new job. 21. Why did Jimmy apply for a new job? A. B Some people think that success is only for those with talent or those who grow up in the right family, and others believe that success mostly comes down to luck. I'm not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances don't come into play because they do. Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and that's just the reality of how life is. However, to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical. And, in additional to that, in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practising. To become great at certain things, it'll require even more time, time that most people won't put in. This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. If you don't enjoy what you do, it is going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you quit well before you ever become good at it. When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have put in a huge part of their life to get there at a huge cost. It's sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some rare talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there's a huge chance that you're wrong anyway. Whatever you do , if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time. If you're not willing to put in the time and work, don't expect to receive any rewards. Consistent, hard work won't guarantee you the level of success you may want, but it will guarantee that you will become really good at whatever it is you put all that work into. 25. Paragraph 1 mainly talks about ______. A. the reasons for success. B. the meaning of success C. the standards of success. D. the importance of success 26. In Paragraph 2, the underlined word "that" refers to _______. A. being good at something. B. setting a practical goal. C. putting in more time. D. succeeding in life 27. What can we infer from Paragraph 4? A. Successful people like to show their great skills. B. People sometimes succeed without luck or talent. C. People need to achieve success at the cost of life. D. It helps to think that luck or talent leads to success. 28. What is the main theme of the passage? A. Having a goal is vital to success. B. Being good is different from being great. C. One cannot succeed without time and practice. D. Luck, talent and family help to achieve success. C. Interested in sharing your views in the Campus Link? They can affect the ability to listen or think, or to speak, or to read, or to write and do mathematics. A person with a learning disability has unusual difficulty in developing these skills. Researchers believe that learning disabilities are caused by differences in the way that the brain works with information. They say children with learning disabilities are not unintelligent or do not want to work. Their brains just process information differently than other people. Researchers say that one in five people in America has some kinds of learning disability. Almost three million children in America receive some kinds of help in school for a learning disability. How can you tell if someone has a learning disability? Experts look for a difference between how well a child does in school and the level of intelligence or ability of the child. But there is no sign of a disorder. A few signs of a learning disability include not connecting letters with their sounds or not understanding what is read. A person with a learning disability may not be able to understand a funny story. They may not follow directions. They may not read numbers correctly or know how to start a task Different people have different kinds of learning disabilities. Another may have difficulty understanding what people are saying. Still another may not be able to express ideas in writing. These different kinds of learning disabilities are known by different names. For example, a person who has difficulty reading may have dyslexia. Someone who cannot do mathematics may have a disorder called dyscalculia Experts say learning disabilities cannot be cured. But people who have them can be helped. Teachers and parents can help young people with learning disabilities to learn successfully. 33. What does the passage mainly talk about? A. Cost of learning disabilities. B. How to cure learning disabilities. C. General introduction to learning disabilities. D. Causes of learning disabilities. 34. It is believed that ____ is the main cause of learning disabilities. A. different brain B. mother language C. being lazy D. the different ways the brain works with information 35. People with learning disabilities may have no trouble ____. A. understanding a funny story B. following directions C. dressing themselves D. reading numbers correctly Life is just like a box. Jimmy is an automotive mechanic, but he lost his job a few months ago. 故选A。 22. While waiting for a bus to the office where he was supposed to be interviewed, he saw an elderly man wildly kicking the tyre of his car. Obviously there was something wrong with the car. 它根据第二段中的“It’s the least I could do” 可知,老人为了向Jimmy表达谢意而载他一程。故选D。 24. Jimmy’s heart sank. “With the way I look now, how could I possibly pass this interview?” he thought to himself. 1) success; talent; luck; family circumstances; reality; life (Para. 2) succeed in life; set a goal; practical; good at something; time (Para. 3) successful people; advise; love; not enjoy; pain; become good at (Para. 4) people; exhibiting…great skills or having achieved great success; a huge part of life; at a huge cost; lucky; born with rare talent; thinking; no good; a huge chance; be wrong (Para. 5) become great at; need to work; time; consistent; level of success 根据这里的内容,找出关键词,some people think…success is for those with…, I’m going to say…, success, because…,由此可知,这里是发表有些人和作者自己对成功的原因的观点看法,所以答案选A项。 26. 根据第一段第一,二句“However…one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical. And, in addition to that….” 由此可推,that指代“to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical”故选B。 27. 根据第四段第一句“When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having…a huge cost.” 1. This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. If you don’t enjoy what you do ,it is going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you quit well before you ever become good at it. 2. Consistent, hard work won’t guarantee you the level of success you may want, but it will guarantee that you will become really good at whatever it is you put all that work into. “Be Leonard Maltin for the day and share…” 32.根据“Share with Campus Link your research developments and breakthroughs”可以推断该栏目给研究者提供了一个交流平台。 39.A. Man: Excuse me, Madam? Woman: Yes? Man: How long can I keep the book? Woman: For one month. I have a get-together party with my college friends on the tenth in Toronto. Oh, I’m afraid I’ve got to go now. My husband is waiting for me. And we’ll have to pick up Daniel from school. Have a nice holiday, Joe! Man: Thank you. You too! Where can you look if you want to know how tall the tallest person in the world is, or who the oldest person in the world is? There is only one place where you’ll find all these information, and that’s in the Guinness Book of World Records. This morning we have someone from the Guinness Company that produced that famous book, Thomas Manning. “Welcome to the program, Thomas!” “Thanks, Sue. It’s a pleasure to be here.” “Perhaps you could start by telling us where the idea for the book came from.” “Well, it was first suggested in the early 1950s. Sir Hugh Beaver, the managing director of Guinness, was out shooting birds with some friends. A bird flew away so quickly that no one was able to shoot it. Sir Hugh wondered whether this bird was the fastest bird in Europe, and if it wasn’t the fastest, he wondered what was.” “So I suppose he went to the nearest library to look for the information and he couldn’t find it?” “Yes, that’s exactly what happened. And this made Sir Hugh think there must be other people in the same situation who wanted this kind of information. He thought that, like himself, people would be interested in finding facts of all records to satisfy their curiosity.” “So the idea for a book of records was born. And when did the first book come out?”“A few years later, in 1955. So, to ask your first question: the tallest person in the world is 231.7cm tall. And the oldest person is Jeanne. L. Calment, who was born in February, 1875.” “There are also some rather strange records, aren’t there, Thomas?” “Yes ,that’s right. Did you know, Sue, that the shortest time it is taken …”
