英语卷·2017届河北省定州中学高三上学期周练(12-16)(2016-12)
河北定州中学2016-2017学年第一学期 高三英语周练试题(12) 一、阅读理解 Every Wednesday, I go to Cantata Adult Life Services, a local retirement community in Brookfield, Illinois, US, with my classmates to do community service. After my very first visit to Cantata, my life changed forever. That may sound a bit dramatic, but volunteering with the elderly has changed my views on life. Our visits last about an hour, and we bring 25-30 students every time. We play board games and cards with the residents while we’re there. You can watch all the movies and TV shows you want about “life back then”, but nothing compares to talking to the people who were actually there. Just hearing their stories has touched me in a way I never thought possible. Whether it was talking to 98-year-old “Hurricane Hilda” about her glory days as a roller skater or chatting with Lou about the times she danced with a famous actor, I was completely attracted by every single memory the residents wanted to share with me. Even the residents who don’t have amazing memories make the experience satisfying . I remember visiting Mrs Robinson. She couldn’t recall much about her past, but she told me she’d never forget how kind I was just to listen to her “rambling (漫谈)”. It made me realize that it’s the little things that make life worth living. That’s something I won’t forget anytime soon. If there’s one thing I’ve realized in my three years of visiting Cantata, it’s that presence – just being there – means more than anything to many of the residents. And despite how busy our lives are, there’s always time to make someone’s day. For me, it feels great to be a source of happiness, a smile on a bad day or a listening ear for old memories. And at the end of the day, that’s all that matters. It’s easy to feel like you don’t have anything in common with the elderly – especially when you’re a teenager. But that’s not true at all. I hate to be overly clichéd (陈词滥调的) here, but age really is just a number. As young adults, it’s important for us to realize this sooner rather than later. We can learn a lot from the elderly, and they can often benefit from teenagers too. 1.What do the volunteers do according to the passage? A. They share everything with the residents. B. They play board games and cards with the residents. C. They watch the residents play games. D. They buy gifts for the residents. 2.According to the writer, what is the most important thing that volunteers can do for the elderly? A. Playing with them. B. Benefiting from them. C. Helping them. D. Being there with them. 3. What does the writer want to tell us by writing this passage ? A. We don’t have anything in common with the elderly. B. Age is just a number. C. It is important to help the elderly. D. Young adults and the elderly can benefit from each other. I ran into a local store today to pick up a few things. With an important meeting to attend, I was in a hurry , so I didn’t take a cart (手推车) on my way inside. As I walked between the shelves in the store, I passed by a young couple and their baby. I continued going through the store, picked up a few items I needed and ended up standing behind this couple in the checkout line. While waiting, I noticed that the young father was holding his money tightly and nervously. The young mother was carrying a baby in her arms and asked the cashier (收银员) for a job application. When the total was rung up, they had to pick items out of their cart because they didn’t have enough money. But all their items were basic necessities(必需品) that they needed most. It just broke my heart to watch the couple try to think about what they could do without. However, they were able to whittle down their items and paid the bill with the money that they had. After they left, I quietly asked the cashier to add those items to mine. The cashier rang everything up, and then got me a shopping cart. We put in their items and I hurried over to their car. “This is for you,” I told them. The young father just looked at me with such appreciation and thanked me. I will never forget the expression in his eyes. As I was getting into my car, they drove over. The young mother said, “Miss, thank you so much.” Tears welled up in my eyes---as they are again now, while I write this. “You are so welcome. Pay it forward some day,” I replied. 4.The underlined phrase “whittle down” in Paragraph 3 probably means “__________”. A. what a great plan she made B. to take a cart while shopping C. how to pick out basic necessities D. to help those who are in need Malka and Shaindle are sisters. Although they live an hour's drive from each other and don’t see each other often, they are in touch. Malka has a large family. Shaindle, however, has had difficulty having children. Malka had just given birth to another son. Shaindle , married three years and still childless, was receiving fertility(生育) treatments. Involved with work, doctor’s visits, and medical treats, she was unable to make the trip to visit her sister after she had given birth. Malka knew her sister’s problem and was quite understanding. Shaindle and her husband Feivel would be at the haptismal (洗礼) ceremony,of course. On the day of the haptism, Shaindle and Feivel arrived early, earlier than Malka and her family. Malka’s mother-in-law, Yehudit, was already at the hall. “Hello,” said Shaindle cheerfully, never thinking what was about to happen. Yehudit turned to her angrily and said, “What a selfish sister you are! Never once did you see fit to visit Makla this entire week! No wonder you have no children!” Shaindle went into shock at her words. She turned away, her eyes filled with tears. The accusation(控诉) had cut Shaindle like a knife. She was psychologically bleeding. Poor Shaindle couldn’t calm down. It took a while before she could regain her calmness. She couldn’t look at Yehudit; it was just too painful for her to do so. The minute the words had escaped Yehudit’s mouth, she knew she had crossed a red line. She had stepped on very raw toes and felt regretted for her words –but it was too late. Her attempts to apologize were ineffective. The celebration had suddenly turned sour in just a matter of seconds. After all these years, the memory of that happening lingers on … 8. Shaindle didn’t visit her sister after her sister gave birth because______________. A. she was jealous of her sister B. she lived far from her sister C. she was too busy to visit her D. she didn’t feel quite herself 9. The underlined part “stepped on very raw toes” probably means_____________. A. words sometimes can really hurt us B. sisters should care for each other C. we should forget unpleasant things D. two sisters’ different experiences Every one of us gets so used to punctuation marks that not many of us give them a second thought. Actually, the ancient Greeks wrote this way. The lack of punctuation marks probably didn’t bother good readers, though. As they read, they just put pauses where they fit best. Also at this time, sentences switched directions. A sentence read from left to right. The next one read right to left, and then left to right again, etc. The ancient Romans sometimes punctuated like this: They put something that can separate words in a sentence. The word punctuation actually comes from this idea and the Latin word punctum, which means a dot. When the 5th century arrived, there were just two punctuation marks: spaces and points. The spaces separated words while the points showed pauses in reading. Then in the 13th century, a printer named Aldus Manutius tried to standardize punctuation. He always used a period for a complete stop at the end of a sentence. He used a slash (/) to indicate a short pause. Over time, that slash was shortened and curled, and it became the modern comma (逗号). Since that time, other marks have enlarged the punctuation family. The exclamation mark (感叹号) comes from the Latin word io. It means “exclamation of joy.” The question mark originally started out as the Latin word questio, meaning question. Eventually, scholars put it at the end of a sentence to show a question. Punctuation even keeps changing nowadays. New marks are coming into existence, and old punctuation marks are used in new ways. Take for example the “interrobang”. This 1962 invention combines the question mark and exclamation mark for times when writers want both. For example, “She did what?” or “How much did you pay for that dress?” Obviously, the interrobang is not widely used or recognized yet, but its invention shows that English is not yet finished with its punctuation. 12.From the first paragraph, we can know that _______. A. good readers had trouble reading without punctuation marks B. a sentence always read from left to right in ancient Greece C. ancient Greeks switched the direction of punctuation marks D. the use of punctuation marks can date back to ancient times 13.The passage is developed _______. A. by time B. by space C. by comparison D. by importance 14.We can learn from the passage that _______. A. ancient Romans didn’t use any punctuation marks B. exclamation and question marks came from Latin C. spaces and slashes were already used before the 5th century D. Aldus Manutius first started to use commas 15.What can be concluded from the last paragraph? A. The combination of two marks will not work. B.
