But what they didn’t know was that this confidence didn’t come naturally to him.‎ In fact, Li was not sure about registering (报名) for the contest in the first place. Even though he had plenty of experience taking part in cello (大提琴) competitions, this would be the first time he ever expressed himself in front of a camera with language. But he made a last-minute decision to join, right before the application deadline in May 2018.‎ The regional (地区的) final came two months later, in July. When everyone else in Li’s class was preparing for final exams, he spent hours in his English teacher’s office, writing his speech. In the evenings, he stood outside the classroom, practicing his delivery.‎ No matter how well he thought he’d prepared, Li admitted that his confidence wavered every time he saw other contestants perform, with their fluent English and perfect manners. Instead of backing down, the panic made him work harder, which eventually took him to the stage of the national final in Jinjiang, Fujian, on Aug 17.‎ Before the contest began, Li looked at himself in the mirror. Wearing makeup (妆) and dressed like an adult, he suddenly realized how much he’d grown through the process. “I’m more competent (有能力的) than I give myself credit (信任) for,” he said. Looking back now, of course Li was expecting his victory – he knew he’d tried his best.‎ ‎24. What do we know about Li Xiaochi from the first four paragraphs?‎ A. He should have been more confident in himself.‎ ‎27. Which word best describes Li Xiaochi, according to the article?‎ A. Gifted. B. Proud. C. Hard-working. D. Creative.‎ C You should see the photo. I’m sitting in red dirt, wearing an ugly purple T-shirt. My face is pink and my hair is wet with sweat. Flies buzz around my head. I’m in the outback (内陆) of Australia’s Northwest Territory, on a school trip with 20 parents and 20 kids.‎ It was an odd choice for a holiday. I like sitting by the pool with a cola, not flies and frogs. I like being alone and quiet, not a busload of kids. I like freshly washed sheets, not dirty-looking blankets.‎ ‎ But here’s the thing about that photo: I am smiling!‎ ‎ The trip sounded good when I signed up. Guides would take us into the heart of the place, and I would see a new part of Australia, learn about local culture and bond with my youngest daughter. I would also bond with 40 strangers. I just hoped there would be good coffee.‎ ‎ In Darwin, we were herded (使……一起移动) onto a bus. It quickly became tiresome. The kids were loud and I hate making small talk.‎ ‎ But later, when I looked out at the vast, empty land, I was surprised at and moved by its beauty. Our guide told us about the land and his culture. I felt far from home.‎ ‎ At a national park, we enjoyed a natural swimming hole. Kids and parents had a great time.‎ ‎ Then we got to the outback. The cabin I shared with my daughter was a brick cell, full of geckos (壁虎) and crickets (蟋蟀), but too dark to see them.‎ ‎ It didn’t matter. The next nine days were packed: waterfalls, lakes, community visits and a trip around Katharine Gorge. We even saw giant crocodiles (鳄鱼) and baby wallabies (沙袋鼠). On our last night, a water pipe broke. We awoke to a mess. Usually, I would have complained and asked for a refund (退款), but it just seemed normal to be dirty.‎ ‎ Indeed, it was impossible to stay clean. We were hiking in red dirt, with temperatures of 35 degrees. Still, I felt a kind of energy I hadn’t experienced in years.‎ ‎ Yes, the coffee was bad, but I was too focused on keeping crickets off my face.‎ ‎ I love that photo of me in the dirt. I look messy, but also happy. Sometimes, it’s another way of ‎ traveling. There is beautiful scenery, there is dirt. There was always someone to talk to, someone to laugh with.‎ ‎28. What were the author’s previous trips like, according to the article?‎ A. Peaceful and comfortable. B. Adventurous.‎ C. Cheap D. Packed with outdoor activities.‎ ‎29. What do we know about the author’s trip with her daughter?‎ A. Their journey was relaxing without too much sightseeing.‎ B. Their living condition was fairly poor during the whole trip.‎ C. The scenery on the trip disappointed them to some degree.‎ D. The parents seemed to enjoy themselves more than their children.‎ ‎30. How did the author feel during the later part of the trip?‎ A. Impatient. B. Positive.‎ C. Disappointed. D. Exhausted.‎ ‎31. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this article?‎ A. To tell about her latest trip and explain what she learned from it.‎ B. To share the benefits of traveling with children.‎ C. To warn readers to choose their trips wisely.‎ D. To show the advantages of going to different places.‎ D Press your fingers into the back of your head, just above your neck. If you feel a small bony bump (突起), you may find evidence of human evolution (进化): it could be your body responding to common smartphone use in the 21st century. ‎ According to a recent study, published in Scientific Reports, young people increasingly have bony bumps at the base of their skulls, right above the neck. Medical professionals call them enlarged external occipital protuberances (EEOPs, 枕外隆突).‎ Australian health scientist David Shahar, author of the study, told the BBC that over the past 10 years he’s seen more and more patients with EEOPs. Together with other researchers from the University of the Sunshine Coast, Australia, they examined 1,200 skull x-rays (X光片) from people aged 18–30. They also measured the bumps and noted each person’s posture (坐立姿势).‎ They found that one in four people had developed these growths. This led to their theory that ‎ smartphones are the cause.‎ According to their research, looking down at our phones adds stress onto the top of our spines (脊柱). To prevent damage to our spines, Shahar believes our bodies add fresh bony bump to help reduce the extra stress.‎ Most of the EEOPs measured just a few millimeters. However, several subjects were found with EEOPs as large as ‎30 mm.‎ In his report, Shahar said the results “highlighted (强调) the need” for intervention (防治). In other words, we need to change our posture while using our phones.‎ Many people assume our bones are solid and unmoving once we reach adulthood. In reality, they are alive and covered with blood vessels (血管), which allows them to develop in unique ways for each person.‎ Aside from EEOPs, other noticeable recent changes in human bodies include shrinking (缩小的) jaws (下巴), narrower elbows (肘) and generally smaller skeletons (骨骼). The human body is adapting to modern life, so who knows what people in the future might look like?‎ ‎32. What did the recent study find about EEOPs?‎ A. They grow on one’s neck.‎ B. They may stop growing when you reach 30.‎ C. They could lead to many health problems.‎ D. They increasingly occur among young people.‎ ‎33. What is the main cause of EEOPs?‎ A. Cellphone use. B. Aging bone layers.‎ C. Gene problems. D. Extra stress.‎ ‎34. Which of the following would Shahar probably agree with?‎ A. EEOPs increase the stress on our spines.‎ B. EEOPs are actually beneficial to our spines.‎ C. Young people’s bones adapt in similar ways.‎ D. Young people should exercise to improve their posture.‎ ‎35. What’s the main purpose of the text?‎ A. To persuade readers to protect their spines.‎ B. To recommend some healthy habits of using phones.‎ C. To explain why human bodies develop EEOPs.‎ D. To show some recent changes in human bodies. ‎ ‎ 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ ‎ Before you read this story, let’s take a look at a sentence: “研表究明,汉字序顺并不阅读影响”36.________You might not realize it, but your brain can read and understand most sentences, even when the words are in the wrong order. ‎ This may have something to do with psychology.
