B In the night, we often look at the sky and see many stars twinkling. There is a question that “How many things can you see in the night sky?”A lot! On a clear night you might see the Moon, some planets, and thousands of sparkling stars. You can see even more with a telescope. With bigger and bigger telescopes you can see more and more objects in the sky. And you can see those objects in more and more detail. But scientists believe there are some things in the sky that we will never see. We won’t see them with the biggest telescope in the world, on the clearest night of the year. That is because they’re invisible. They’re the mysterious dead stars called black holes. You might find it hard to imagine the stars die. After all, our Sun is a star. Year after year we see it up in the sky, burning brightly, giving us heat and light. The Sun certainly doesn’t seem to be getting old or weak. But stars do burn out and die after billions of years. As a star’s gases burn, they give off light and heat. But when the gas runs out, the star stops burning and begins to die. As the star cools, the outer layers of the star pull in toward the center. The star squashes(挤压) into a smaller and smaller ball. If the star was very small, the star ends up as a cold, dark ball called a black dwarf(侏儒). If the star was very big, it keeps squashing inward until it’s packed together tighter than anything in the universe. What pulls the star in toward its center with such power? It’s the same force that pulls you down when you jump — the force called gravity. A black hole is so tightly packed that its gravity sucks in everything — even light. The light from a black hole can never come back to your eyes. That’s why you see nothing but blackness. 24. What is the best title of the passage? A. Show how many things we can see in the sky. B. Tell us big telescopes are important to see objects in the sky. C. Introduce some things invisible in the sky. D. Explain how stars died in the sky. 25. We can infer from the passage that __________. A. We can see an object because it can give out or reflect light. B. The Sun certainly isn’t getting old or weak. C. Stars becomes invisible as soon as they die. D. A dead star finally becomes a cold, dark ball called a black dwarf. 26. Which is the correct order of what happens after a star’s burning? 1. The gas runs out. 2. The star becomes invisible. 3. The star stops burning and begins to die. 4. The star cools down and pulls in. A. 3 1 4 2 B. 1 2 3 4 C. 3 4 1 2 D. 1 3 4 2 27. From this passage we can know that “gravity” is __________. A. the force that sucks in light. B. what prevents you from jumping on the earth. C. the force that attracts objects in space. D. the force that pulls stars in toward its center. C Garbage is a tough problem that is difficult to deal with. Nowadays, Guangzhou residents will be testing a pilot (试点的) project to reduce the amount of garbage(垃圾) produced in the city. Dump more, pay more. "The new system requires local residents to pay more when they dump more garbage, and pay less if they dump less," said Bao Lunjun, chief engineer of the Guangzhou Administrative Committee of Urban Management. Under the new system, each family in the pilot housing estates (住宅区)will receive 60 personalized trash bags - 30 for kitchen waste and 30 for other garbage - each month. Currently, every family in the city pays for them. “Only garbage in the special bags can be dumped in the housing estates' dustbins, or families will be fined,” Bao said. “The fees collected will be used to fund the collection program,” said Chen Jianhua, mayor of the city, in response to some residents’ worries that the fees would be pocketed by corrupt officials. “The new system is expected to cover the entire city and will help reduce the amount of trash dumped by local residents,” Bao said. Another official said, “Authorities should raise residents’ environmental awareness and urge residents to sort garbage before it reaches the bin. Residents who have sorted the garbage at home and reduce rubbish should be rewarded while asking those who dump more garbage should pay higher rubbish fees." But the fee increase has been questioned by local residents who oppose the new system. "The hike of the rubbish fees will increase the burden of the city's low-income families," said Chen Hongyun, a Guangzhou housewife, “A public hearing should be organized before the new system is formally introduced,” she added. “But the increasing amount of garbage is already beyond the treatment ability of existing landfills and incinerators(焚化炉),causing a great threat to the health of local residents,” said Li Tinggui, director of the committee. “It’s urgent for the city to reduce garbage, and a charge for the amount of trash dumped by residents is a good way to realize this goal.” Li said. 28. Why do Guangzhou authorities want to carry out the pilot project? A. To reduce the amount of produced rubbish B. To raise money to build the city C. To cut down the use of plastic bags D. To make the city beautiful 29. How many people expressed their opinions in the passage? A. Three B. Four C. Five D. Six 30. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the text? A. The present rubbish fees for each household in Guangzhou B. The exact amount of daily treatment of rubbish C. The ways to deal with those who throw less or more rubbish D. People’s concern about how the collected money will be used 31. The author reported the new system in a(n) __________voice. A. supportive B. objective C. disapproving D. indifferent D Working through a self-help program online can prevent or delay major depression(抑郁) disorder in people who are vulnerable(易受伤害的), a study finds. Similar programs have been used to treat depression, but this may be the first one tested to prevent it, the researchers say. Online programs for mental health problems can be as effective as face-to-face treatment and offer some advantages: Low cost and available at any time. But they’re not panaceas. The study, which was conducted by researchers from Germany, involved 406 people with sub threshold(临界的)depression, which is defined as having some symptoms of depression but not enough to be diagnosed with major depressive disorder. In this experiment, half of the participants(参与者)were asked to do six half-hour-long exercises that were based on cognitive behavioral therapy (认知行为疗法) and problem-solving therapy, which are techniques commonly used for in-person therapy. In the cognitive behavioral therapy, participants were asked to identify positive activities they used to engage in and then were asked to actively plan those activities again. At the next session, participants reflected on their experiences. For the problem-solving therapy, people were asked to create a list of the things that matter most to them in their lives and brainstorm on how to incorporate(混合)those things into daily life. They next were asked to categorize (分类)problems and worries into “manageable” and “unmanageable”; the main focus in problem-solving therapy is to deal with those problems that are considered manageable. Both therapies are intended to change negative thinking in order to change mood and behavior. After completing each exercise, participants in the intervention (干预) group received written personal feedback(反馈)from an online trainer. The trainers did not offer any therapeutic advice, only encouragement to continue the exercises. Participants also could repeat the online sessions as often as they liked. The control group received information about depression but didn’t have to read it. Of the 406 participants that began the study, 335 completed the telephone follow-up at the end of 12 months. Twenty-seven percent in the intervention group experienced depression compared with 41 percent in the control group. It is unclear if the people who went on to develop major depressive disorder had experienced it before. Lead author Claudia Buntrock says that because the study only tracked (追踪) participants’ mental health over the course of 12 months, the long-term effectiveness of the intervention is unknown. “It’s also not clear if this kind of program could be used widely. It took the trainers about 30 minutes to provide feedback for each session, and they also stayed in touch with participants via instant messaging.” he adds. 32. According to the experiment, the participants __________. A. are treated in the same way by the trainers B. access the online programme just for once C. show severe symptoms of depression D. are divided into two different groups 33. The underlined word “panaceas” in paragraph 2 probably refers to something that can __________. A. solve all the problems B. produce harmful effects C. appeal to every patient D. distribute powerful results 34. The author develops Paragraph 4 mainly by__________. A. making comparisons B. describing a process C. providing examples D. offering an explanation 35. From what Claudia Buntrock said, we can infer__________. A. people suffering from depression have experienced it before B. on-line programmes have long-term effects on depression C. trainers have spent a lot of time and energy on the experiment D. twelve months is long enough to carry out the experiment 第二节:七选五(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 For a student, study is the most important. I needed two sets of curtains for the living room, two table lamps, a carpet and several cushions. I asked them to deliver the things within a week, but they said they were unable to send them out until ten days later. After about three weeks, I received only the curtains and table lamps. I was a little disappointed when I didn’ t receive all the items I had bought. But nevertheless, I was eager to see what the curtains and lamps looked like. I first opened the package with the curtains. I had bought a lovely light blue and a light green, and instead they had sent me a horrible dark purple. Well, you can just imagine how angry I was. Then I opened the boxes with the lamps. They were exactly what I’d ordered. But one of the lamps was damaged. The next thing I did was to telephone them to complain. They promised to come and pick the items up immediately and also to replace them with the correct order. It has been two weeks since my complaint. They have neither picked up the wrong items nor sent me the rest of my order.查看更多
