A The following are letters to the editor of a school newspaper Dear editor, I’d like to express my opinion about grades. Students should be allowed to study without worrying about grades. Fortunately, most educators are becoming aware of the fact that students have different interests and abilities. I understand that grades are useful, but grades often limit creativity. Competing for better grades causes many students to turn down opportunities to pursue music, dramatics and sports. Grades force an arbitrary (武断的) standard of success on everyone. I do not demand, as some extremists do, that grades be removed immediately. However, I do believe that less emphasis should be placed on grades. I hope that someday grades will become optional at Village High School. Magdalena Smith Drama Club Dear editor, I’d like to say something about grades. Let’s face the facts about grades. Grades perform three basic functions. First, grades motivate students to work at their highest level of competence. Second, they act as a reward for hardworking students and as a punishment to students who do not work hard. Finally, grades are used as an effective standard by which to measure student achievement. Good grades help students to get jobs and to get into university. I’ve spoken with a number of students who have jobs, and most of them say that they were hired primarily on the basis of their grades. My grades helped me land a part-time job and will help me get into university next year. I think grades are extremely important at Village High School. Simon Harper Science Club 1. Which of the following is not Magdalena Smith’s opinion? A. Students may give up the chance to learn music and sports for grades. B. Students’ creativity may not be developed for grades. C. Grades should be taken away at once. D. Grades should not be used to measure a person’s success. 2. We can learn Simon Harper __________. A. is concerned about students’ creativity B. believes in the benefits of good grades C. doesn’t work too hard at his studies D. supports students’ interests and abilities 3. From the second letter, we can infer that Simon Harper is a/an __________. A. teacher B. headmaster C. advertiser D. student B There is a story about a man who lost his legs and left arm in an accident. After the accident, only a finger and thumb on his right hand remained. He was a brilliant, creative, and educated man. He had gained a lot of experience while traveling around the world, so he became very depressed after his accident. He was afraid that he would spend the rest of his life suffering and would no longer be able to spend his life in a meaningful way. Then, he realized that he still had partial function of his right hand and could still write even though it was very difficult. An idea occurred to him, “Why not write to other people who need encouragement?” He wrote to the prison ministry about sending letters to the prisoners. The prison minister replied, “Writing to the prisoners is acceptable, but your letters will not be answered.” Filled with excitement, the man knew he could write his letters. He began sending one-way messages of God’s love, hope, strength, and encouragement. He wrote twice a week, testing his strength and ability to the limit. He poured his heart and soul into his words and shared his experience, sense of humor, optimism, and faith. It was difficult to write those letters, especially without hope of a reply. One day he received a letter from the prison ministry. It was a short note from the officer who monitored and checked the prison mail. The letter said, “Please write on the best paper you can afford. Your letters are passed from room to room until they fall to pieces!” No matter what circumstances life may present, we all have unique experiences, abilities, and God-given talents. We can discover ways to reach others who desperately need messages of encouragement and strength. 4. Before the man had the accident, he __________. A. had visited local prisons B. had toured around the world C. had tried doing exercise to recover himself D. had been friends with the prison minister 5. In order to live in a meaningful way, the man began to ________. A. write to other people who needed encouragement B. receive the school education C. meet the people who were depressed D. help other people who lost arms and legs 6. From the officer’s short note we are told that __________. A. the man would be offered free paper to write letters on B. some of the prisoners were not satisfied with his letters C. his letters were very popular among the prisoners D. the prisoners eagerly wanted to write back to the man 7. What can be the best title for the passage? A. Stories about a Humorous Person B. Popularity of Special Letters C. Relationship between Writers and Prisoners D. Special Letters of Encouragement C For centuries, the body’s blood has been linked closely with the emotions. People who show no human emotions or feelings, are said to be cold-blooded killer. For example, the police are searching for a cold-blooded killer. He seems to kill for no reason, and no emotion, as if taking someone’s life as nothing. Cold can affect other parts of the body. The expression “get cold feet” has nothing to do with cold or your feet. The expression means being afraid to do something you have decided to do. For example, you agree to be president of an organization. But then you learn that all the other officers have resigned, and all the work of the organization will be your responsibility. You are likely to get cold feet about being president when you understand the situation. The expression “give someone the cold shoulder” probably comes from the physical act of turning your back toward someone, instead of speaking to him face to face. You may give a cold shoulder to a friend who has not kept a promise he made to you. Or, to someone who has lied about you to others. A cold fish is not a fish.It is a person. But it is a person who is unfriendly, unemotional and shows no love or warmth. A cold fish does not offer much of himself to anyone.Someone who is a cold fish could be cold-hearted. Now a cold-hearted person is someone who has no sympathy.Several popular songs in recent years were about cold-hearted men or cold-hearted women who, without feelings, broke the hearts of their lovers. Out in the cold means not getting something that everybody else got.A person might say that everybody but him got a pay raise---he was left out in the cold. And it is not a pleasant place to be. 8.When you refuse to speak to a man and treat him in a distant way, you may express by “____”. A.I give him the cold shoulder B.I think he is a cold fish C.I think he is a cold-blooded man D.I’m likely to get cold feet 9.If Sue shows absolutely no reaction to those awful pictures of starving children in Africa, you will say _________. A.she is out in the cold B.she is a cold fish C.she is a cold-blooded killer D.she gets cold feet 10.We can use the expression “__________” to describe a man who abandons or hurts his lover without mercy. A.cold feet B.cold shoulder C.cold-blooded D.cold-hearted 11.The topic of this passage is about _________. A.some expressions about friendship B. how cold weather comes into being C.the relationship between cold and our body D.some expressions connected with cold D The Carnival of Brazil is an annual festival held 46 days before Easter, especially famous for the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. Carnival celebrations are believed to have roots in the festival of Saturnalia, which, adapted to Christianity, became a farewell to bad things in a season of re ligious discipline to regret and prepare for Christ’s death and coming back to life. Modern Brazilian Carnival dates back to Rio de Janeiro in 1641. It originally copied the European form of the festival, later taking in elements of Native American and African cultures. In the late 19th century, the strings (弦乐器) were introduced in Rio de Janeiro. These were pageant (游行) groups that paraded through city avenues performing on instruments and dancing. Today they are known as blocks, consisting of a group of people who dress in costumes or special T-shirts with themes or logos. Blocks are generally connected with particular neighborhoods; they include both a music group and a lot of revelers(狂欢者). Block parades have become an expressive feature of Rio’s Carnival. Today, they number more than 100 and the groups increase each year. Blocks can be formed by small or large groups of revelers with a clear title. Before the show, they gather in a square, then parade in sections of the city, often near the beach. Carnival time in Rio is very interesting, but is also the most expensive time to visit Rio. Hotel rooms and other lodgings (住宿) can be up to four times more expensive than the regular rates. There are big crowds at some locations and life is far from ordinary in many parts of town. 12.What can we infer from the first paragraph? A. The Carnival of Brazil is often held after Easter. B. The Carnival of Brazil comes from Easter and Saturnalia. C. The Carnival of Brazil is mainly to celebrate the birth of Christ. D. The Carnival of Brazil is a festival to regret and begin a new life. 13.How long is the history of the people’s celebrating modern Brazilian Carnival? A. About 100 years. B. Less than two centuries. C. Over five centuries. D. About 370 years. 14.We can infer from the fourth paragraph that_______ A. block parades become bigger and bigger. B. block parades can only be formed by big groups of revelers. C. the theme of blocks must be serious. D. blocks always parade only on the beach 15.What is the passage mainly about? A. The famous carnivals in the world. B. How the carnival was introduced in Brazil. C. The happy life of the people in Rio de Janeiro. D. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here’s how. Plan your time carefully. When you plan your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. then decide a good, regular time for studying. 17 A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time. Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television! When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject. Make good use of your time in class. 18 Really listening in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says. Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes. Review the important points that your teacher mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material. 19 If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer. Develop a good attitude about tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be overly worried. 20 You will probably discover many others after you have tried these. A. There are other methods that might help you with your studying. B. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says. C. This will help you understand the next class. D. Maybe you are an average student. E. In a word, you can become a top student if you work hard. F. Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment. G. Make full use of class time to take notes of what the teacher says in class. 二、英语知识运用 第一节:完型填空(共20题,每题1.5分,满分30分) Several years ago, my son and I had a brief conversation that has really stuck with me.
