When we 31 our world to include others in a meaningful way, by making a 32 difference in their life, we increase our experience at the same time. Think back on a time when someone made a difference in your life. Here is one of mine: I was going to college, working part-time, and just 33 getting by financially. Standing in line at a local supermarket, I 34 a woman in the same line, thinking that she was not very attractive. As I was 35 , I discovered that I did not have enough money to pay; without 36 , that same woman I had been judging offered to 37 the difference. It wasn’t 38 , but what that person did made a lasting impression on me. She was a beautiful, caring soul who was willing to help a stranger in a(an) 39 situation. That happened over forty years ago and I remember it as 40 as if it was yesterday. Other examples are the numerous times I have had people smile at me, which 41 my day. I've often wondered if it was because I was smiling, which I 42 to do all the time, or because they were smiling to be 43 , which encouraged me to smile as well. It has probably been some of both. In 44 case, that simple gesture (a smile) makes a difference in my day. There are 45 ways to make a significant difference in another's life. The question is: Are we doing it? It does not 46 anything, but it does require some effort on our part. I have found that as I do this consistently, the 47 go far beyond the energy required to do the deed. Looking for ways to brighten another person's day raises our vibration(共鸣),and when we act on it, we 48 the other person to raise their vibration as well — it is 49 to each other. Make a difference in someone's life today, and 50 doing so every day. Today is a perfect time to start! Try to learn about your ecosystem, endangered animals and pollution. If you are well-informed, you can make better decisions about how to save energy and produce less waste. You can also learn how to be a better consumer and not buy products made from endangered animals or which have too much packaging, Also share your concerns with others and find ways to promote environmental education.Help educate people in your community about ways in which they can help protect the environment. The Earth is our only home.We should take good care of it. Recycle Make a list of all the things you can recycle at home and at school and start recycling. In some cases, you can sell the things you recycle. In others, you can turn unwanted items into something useful for another purpose, such as using old plastic bottles for growing plants. Most bottles and jars contain at least 25% recycled glass. And recycling aluminum cans saves 95% of the energy needed to make aluminum from bauxite ore Recycling one ton of paper saves 17 trees, 26,000 litres of water, 1,700 litres of 011, 266 kilograms of air pollution and 2.3 cubic metres of rubbish dump space. Use less energy The easiest way to save energy is to cycle or walk whenever possible instead of using public transportation. At home and at school, you should only use electric lights and electrical appliances when you need them. There are many other less obvious ways of saving energy. For example, try to ask your mum to buy food which has been grown locally. Why? When people buy food from far away, it takes extra energy to package and ship it by boat, train, truck or plane. Save water You can save water by helping your Dad repair leaking pipes and toilets.Take short showers instead of baths. Some waste water from baths can be used for other purposes, such as watering plants or washing outdoor spaces. It is important to help preserve the local water quality by not pouring dangerous household chemicals down the drain or into the ground.Dispose of them properly. 51. The target readers of this passage could mostly probably be__________. . A. housewives B. students C. businessmen D. car drivers 52. Which of the following has the author NOT mentioned to protect the Earth? A. Don't buy products made from endangered animals. B. Don't buy food produced in faraway places. C. Don't order more than you can eat at a restaurant. D. Don't buy goods with heavy packaging. 53. The underlined words "bauxite ore" in the third paragraph refers to____________. A. a metal which can be used to make cans B. a matter which can be used to produce energy C. a container in which a certain material can be stored D. a mineral from which a certain metal can be obtained B Hollywood’s theory that machines with evil(邪恶) minds will drive armies of killer robots is just silly. The real problem relates to the possibility that artificial intelligence(AI) may become extremely good at achieving something other than what we really want. In 1960 a well-known mathematician Norbert Wiener, who founded the field of cybernetics(控制论), put it this way: “If we use, to achieve our purposes, a mechanical agency with whose operation we cannot effectively interfere(干预), we had better be quite sure that the purpose put into the machine is the purpose which we really desire.” A machine with a specific purpose has another quality, one that we usually associate with living things: a wish to preserve its own existence. For the machine, this quality is not in-born, nor is it something introduced by humans; it is a logical consequence of the simple fact that the machine cannot achieve its original purpose if it is dead. So if we send out a robot with the single instruction of fetching coffee, it will have a strong desire to secure success by disabling its own off switch or even killing anyone who might interfere with its task. If we are not careful, then, we could face a kind of global chess match against very determined, super intelligent machines whose objectives conflict with our own, with the real world as the chessboard. The possibility of entering into and losing such a match should concentrate the minds of computer scientists. Some researchers argue that we can seal the machines inside a kind of firewall, using them to answer difficult questions but never allowing them to affect the real world. Unfortunately, that plan seems unlikely to work: we have yet to invent a firewall that is secure against ordinary humans, let alone super intelligent machines. Solving the safety problem well enough to move forward in AI seems to be possible but not easy. There are probably decades in which to plan for the arrival of super intelligent machines. But the problem should not be dismissed out of hand, as it has been by some AI researchers. Some argue that humans and machines can coexist as long as they work in teams—yet that is not possible unless machines share the goals of humans. Others say we can just “switch them off” as if super intelligent machines are too stupid to think of that possibility. Still others think that super intelligent AI will never happen. On September 11, 1933, famous physicist Ernest Rutherford stated, with confidence, “Anyone who expects a source of power in the transformation of these atoms is talking moonshine.” However, on September 12, 1933, physicist Leo Szilard invented the neutron-induced(中子诱导) nuclear chain reaction. 54. Paragraph 1 mainly tells us that artificial intelligence may . A. command armies of killer robots B. satisfy human’s real desires C. run out of human control D. work faster than a mathematician 55. Machines with specific purposes are associated with living things partly because they might be able to . A. do anything successfully with given orders B achieve their original goals independently C. prevent themselves from being destroyed D. beat humans in international chess matches 56. What does the author think of the safety problem of super intelligent machines? A.It will be solved but with difficulty B. It will get worse with human interference. C. It will disappear with the development of AI. D. It will stay for a decade. C One evening at a busy Broadway intersection, I noticed a sister struggling to keep her little kid in check while she talked on the pay phone. She wanted him to stay still next to her, but he wanted to run and play at the roadside, close to rushing buses and taxis. One could sense the woman’s frustration, that she was pulled in too many directions: She was angry at the person on the telephone and shouting at the younger that she would “snap his leg” if he moved again. As I waited for the traffic light to change, the child began to complain and struggle to free himself from the woman’s grip. She dropped the phone, seized the neck of his tiny T-shirt and gave him a back-hand blow across the face that I know made his little head spin. The light changed, and passersby continued on their way. But I stood there, fixed to the pavement. I knew this extremely upset woman would follow through on her threat of violence to the child. Before, I had wanted to approach her and offer to watch the youngster while she dealt with the distressing situation on the phone. Now I wanted to comfort the little boy. I also wanted to speak to the sister to calm her and to caution her, as I wish someone had cautioned me when I was passing my pain on to my daughter and causing her emotional suffering. But I was chicken. I thought, she may think I’m out of line, or I may be her next target. Often I’ve thought about that child and the many others abused by adults. I wonder how they will internalize (使……藏在心底) their pain, if it will crush their spirits. Will this little boy grow up to be an abusive man? Will he be gloomy and withdrawn? Will he find it hard to communicate with women, with other men? Or will he survive and be sensitive, caring and determined not to continue the cycle? There is too much cruelty in the world, too much cruelty between people. I tremble at the increasing verbal bitterness and violence among Black girls, and among young mothers trying to discipline their children. This behavior isn’t class- or age- related: I hear sharp words from Black women from all walks of life who are overworked and stressed out and have grown impatient. At times I, too, become short with others, or, like the sister on the phone, strike out at those closest to me. Often we’re tired because we’ve made the wrong choices. Young girls who still need mothering are loaded with children. We, sisters easily get hurt and annoyed when we don’t come to terms with our own sense of self. Our personal fulfillment requires knowing what is best for us, setting oar boundaries and keeping them undamaged. We will always be asked to do more than we are comfortable doing. When we know our boundaries, we can decline comfortably. People — and we ourselves — will act in ways we don’t like. But they, like us, are still worthy of love. Whatever irritates (激怒) us about a person should be examined. Is the person reflecting behavior in us that needs to be changed? Often, when I find people irritating, I find they mirror something about me that I need to correct. What’s needed in our personal relationships is a return to tenderness and tolerance. We must allow one another our learning experiences. Just as violence results to violence, verbal violence — the hard words and harsh tones we use to release inner stress — adds to the distance between us. What we people of African root must do to thrive begins with love, sensitivity and our ability to work together. We Black women have these spiritual resources in abundance. Now we must draw on them to create a peaceful place — for ourselves, our children, our men. 57. The mother of the little kid can be best described as_____________ . A. cruel and talkative B. frustrated and hot-tempered C. confused and quick-minded D. considerate and sensitive 58. By saying “She may think I am out of line”, the author meant the woman might say____________ . A. “You are walking in the wrong direction.” B. “Walk away. It’s none of your business.” C. “You’re not standing in the queue.” D. “You can watch and comfort my kid.” 59. According to the author, when we find a person irritating, we should_________. A. reflect on our behavior that needs correcting B. return to tenderness and tolerance C. avoid the hard words and sharp tones D. examine if anything is wrong with him 60. The tone of the last paragraph is_____________. A. critical B. pessimistic C. objective D. optimistic Although the word workaholic (工作狂) usually has a negative meaning, it is sometimes used by people wishing to express their devotion to their career positively. The “work” in question is usually associated with a paying job, but it may also refer to independent pursuits (追求) such as sports, music and art. A workaholic in the negative sense is popularly characterized by a neglect of family and other social relations. Similarly, people considered to be workaholics tend to lose track of time. Workaholism is an addiction, and it’s not the same as working hard. Experts say the continuous work-related activity masks anxiety, low self-esteem (自尊), and privacy problems. Workaholics feel the urge of being busy all the time, to the point that they often perform tasks that aren’t required or necessary for project completion. As a result, they tend to be inefficient workers, since they focus on being busy, instead of focusing on being productive. In addition, workaholics tend to be less effective than other workers because it’s difficult for them to work as part of a team, they have trouble entrusting co-workers, or they take on so much that they aren’t as organized as others. Workaholics are occupied with work all the time, which prevents them from maintaining healthy relationships, hobbies, or even take measures to protect their health. As with addictions to alcohol, drugs or gambling, workaholics’ harmful behavior will continue despite advice from loved ones or danger signs such as worsening relationships. Poor health is another warning sign. Because there’s less of social shame attached to workaholism than to other addictions, health symptoms can easily go unrecognized. In the U.S. and Canada, workaholism remains what it’s always been: the so-called “respectable addiction” that’s dangerous as any other. Workaholism in Japan is considered a serious social problem leading to early death, often on the job, a phenomenon called karōshi (过劳死). As with other psychological addictions, workaholics often cannot see that they have a problem. Reasoning the workaholic out of the problem will generally be met with denial. Co-workers, family members and friends may need to communicate the effects of the workaholic’s behavior to them. Indeed, mental treatment to cure a workaholic can successfully reduce the hours spent on the job, while increasing the person’s productivity. Studies show that fully recovered former workaholics can accomplish in 50 hours what they previously couldn’t do in 80. The rice is called “golden rice” because it is yellow. It has been genetically changed, or modified, to produce beta carotene (胡萝卜素), a form of Vitamin A. Vitamin A is missing from the food of millions of people in the developing world, which is the leading cause of childhood blindness. Young children and pregnant women can die from the lack of Vitamin A. Patrick Moore, an ecologist and former Greenpeace president, supports production of golden rice. He says there should not even be debate about the issue while children starve. Daniel Ocampo, an agriculture expert for Greenpeace, argues that golden rice is still not ready as a food for humans after 20 years of research. He says it could be more dangerous than its supporters will admit. It has generated heated debate among the public. People’s opinions over it vary. In my opinion, “golden rice” reflects the current trends in modern technology and should be welcomed, since it is no more than a way to relieve famine and cure certain diseases. It makes no sense to dismiss the idea of growing genetically modified crops when a vast majority of people worldwide are still suffering from hunger and certain diseases. In addition, just because the genetic engineering is a relatively new research area, it doesn’t necessarily mean the technology will spell disaster. Furthermore, there has been no solid evidence of the negative side effects of GM food on human beings so far. In short, with new technologies developing at an ever-increasing speed daily, it could be safe to introduce “golden rice”. 反对 Scientists in the Philippines are working on genetically modifying rice, hoping to offer cures for Vitamin A deficiency, which has aroused public concern. Different people have different opinions on it. In my opinion, “golden rice” hasn’t undergone enough test yet and shouldn’t be introduced in the first place. To begin with, no one can say for sure what effects it might have on us and our generations to come, for there has been much debate about it. To follow up, since GM crops are planted outside, they might also pose considerable threat to the food chain, which in turn, might influence the ecosystem. What’s more, because of the uncertainties of GM food, many countries have hesitated to give permission for the production of GM foods. In conclusion, more work has to be done before the rice can be eaten by humans. Therefore, I would rather be cautious with “golden rice”. 附:听力原稿 Text 1 W: Look at those clouds. M: Mm. I wrote over 300 short stories on that little laptop, and I wanted to get published. My parents were really supportive. Many publishers were not quite so encouraging. Luckily for me, finally one publisher published my first book, “Flying Fingers”, you see it here. And from there on, it has gone to speaking at hundreds of schools, to thousands of educators, and finally, today, speaking to you. I appreciate your attention today because it shows that you truly care, you listen. But there is a problem with this rosy picture of kids being so much better than adults. Kids grow up and become adults just like you? Really? The goal is not to turn kids into your kind of adult, but rather better adults than you have been. The way progress happens is because new generations grow and develop, and become better than the previous ones. It’s the reason we are not in the Dark Ages anymore. No matter what your position of place in life, it’s a must to create opportunities for children so that we can grow up and blow you away. 查看更多
