Unit 2 Cloning Ⅰ.阅读理解 A [2020·郑州高三第一次质量预测]My son Sam is 16 and autistic (自闭症的). There's a lot going on in that beautiful and brilliant mind of his, but even on a good day he can be easily at a loss. Throw in some diagnosed anxiety, an inability to read social cues (提示) and an unexpected change to his daily routine, and you have the way to deal with a very public breakdown (精神崩溃). It was Sam's very first day at high school. We'd set up a plan for how he'd get home: I'd pick him up outside the shop near his school at 3:30 p.m. and I believed this was a perfect plan. Unknown to me, very bad weather was on its way and I was unable to warn him to take shelter. With the combination of his dead phone battery and my dead car battery, I was running late and unable to communicate that to him. As a result, he was left alone and extremely frightened. He became very upset outside the shop, exactly where I'd told him to wait. This was when a beautiful older Vietnamese lady not only went to check_on him, but took him inside her shop, calmed him down, got my phone number from him and called me. Five years later he continued to go into her shop every afternoon, bought a drink, had a chat and she sent him home with enough bread and rolls to feed a small nation. Sam will graduate this year, and I'm increasingly feeling the need to drop by the shop to let this wonderful lady know that she has saved Sam, and that she has saved me. I'm not sure if I can communicate all of this, but at least I will get to thank her. There are people I will not get to thank, though — the many kind strangers who have been there for Sam. And believe me, if you're wondering if this world is a complete mess right now, I'm here to say that it is not. So I guess this is a love letter to those of you who have helped a stranger out of the goodness of your heart. Please know you are appreciated, and that your beautiful heart and kindness are appreciated, and perhaps unknowingly, you have made a great difference in someone's life. - 8 - 1.What can we learn about Sam from the first paragraph? A.He is rather slow with his studies. B.He can deal with sudden changes well. C.He has difficulty in dealing with things. D.He tries hard to learn how to read social cues. 2.The underlined part “check on” in Paragraph 4 probably means “________”. A.discover B.visit C.recognize D.examine 3.What happened to Sam after his first day at high school? A.He could get on well with his classmates. B.He made good friends with the nice lady. C.He brought the lady some food to thank her. D.He became willing to communicate with others. 4.What is the author's purpose in writing the passage? A.To express her thanks to kind people. B.To remind us all to help autistic people. C.To show how difficult life is for autistic people. D.To tell us how to make a difference in others' lives. B [2020·辽宁五校协作体高三上学期联考]While the start of a new school year is always exciting, this year was even more so for some elementary school students in Auckland, New Zealand. They became the world's first kids to be “taught” by a digital teacher. Before you start imagining a humanlike robot walking around the classroom, Will is just an avatar (化身) that appears on the students' desktops, or smartphone screens, when ordered to come. The autonomous animation (动画制作) platform has been modeled after the human brain and nervous system, allowing it to show humanlike behavior. The digital teacher is assigned to teach “Be sustainable with energy” — a free program for Auckland elementary schools. Just like the humans it replaced, Will is able to instantly react to the students' responses to the topic. Thanks to a webcam and microphone, the avatar not only responds to questions the kids may have, but also picks up nonverbal cues (暗示). For instance, if a student smiles at Will, he responds by smiling back. This twoway - 8 - interaction not only helps attract the students' attention, but also allows the program's developers to monitor their involvement, and make changes if needed. Nikhil Ravishankar believes that Willlike avatars could be a novel way to catch the attention of the next generation. He says, “I have a lot of hope in this technology as a means to deliver costeffective, rich, educational experience in the future.” The program, in place since August 2018, has been a great success thus far. Ravishankar says, “What was fascinating to me was the reaction of the children to Will. The way they look at the world is so creative and different, and Will really captures their attention.” However, regardless of how popular it becomes, Will is unlikely to replace human educators any time soon. 5.What was special for some elementary school students in Auckland? A.A digital teacher taught them. B.They first saw something digital. C.This was the start of a new school year. D.They could get close to smartphone screens. 6.What is the benefit of this twoway interaction? A.It can smile back. B.It can use a microphone. C.It can talk any topic for free. D.It can change if necessary. 7.What's the author's attitude to Will's replacing human educators soon? A.Optimistic. B.Doubtful. C.Unclear. D.Disapproving. 8.What might be the best title for the passage? A.New Hightech Contributes to Education B.The World's First Digital Teacher Appears in the Classroom C.The World's First Digital Teacher, a Help to Students D.New Zealand Will Replace Teachers in the Classroom Ⅱ. When faced with a big challenge where potential failure seems to appear at every corner, maybe you'll hear this advice: Be more confident. __1__ Take the belief that - 8 - you are precious and capable, also known as selfesteem. Confidence turns thoughts into action. It comes from the genes you are born with, the way people get used to treating you as well as the choices you make. While it isn't possible to completely separate these three factors, the personal choices we make obviously play a major role in confidence development. As a result, by keeping certain practical tips in mind, we do actually have the power to cultivate our own confidence. __2__ If you're looking for a longterm change, consider the way you think about your abilities and talents. Do you think they are fixed at birth, or that they can be developed? These beliefs matter because they can influence how you act in the face of setbacks. If you have a fixed mindset, meaning that your talents are locked in the place, you might give up, assuming you've discovered something you're not good at. But if you have a growth mindset, and think your abilities can improve, a challenge will become an opportunity to learn and grow. Neuroscience (神经科学) supports the latter. The connections in your brain do get stronger and grow with study and practice. __3__ Practicing failure is a must. Failure happens. __4__ J.K. Rowling was rejected by twelve different publishers before one picked up Harry Potter. The Wright brothers built on history's failing attempts at flight before designing a successful airplane. Studies show that those who fail regularly and keep trying anyway are better equipped to respond to challenges in constructive ways. __5__ So, think of a challenge you want to take on, realize it's not going to be easy, accept that you'll make mistakes, and be kind to yourself when you do. You'll feel the excitement, knowing that whatever the result, you'll have gained greater knowledge and understanding. A.But what is confidence? B.So can confidence be easily cultivated? C.Everyone is possible to encounter failure. D Being a talented person is quite necessary. E.They learn to try different strategies and persevere. F.Believing in your abilities to improve is the first step. G.It also turns out that people with a growth mindset are better at dealing with challenges. Ⅲ.语法填空 [2020·唐山质量检测]None of the major traditional museums seemed to see it as a threat when the Museum of Ice Cream opened in New York in 2016. However, as more - 8 - of these popup museums started coming 1.________ existence over the next two years, they seemed to become a trend that should have been taken more seriously. And the 2.________ (late) member to join this list is The Museum of Pizza, set 3.________ (open) in New York this October. It seems that museums are no longer places to 4.________ (mere) “see” art. People want to have more interactive experiences instead of keeping a polite distance from 5.________ (exhibit). At the Museum of Ice Cream, for example, visitors can jump into a pool of plastic sprinkles. And at the upcoming The Museum of Pizza, people 6.________ (lie) on a “pizza beach”, where they can experience a “wave of cheese”. Not only are visitors taking pictures of art, but they're taking pictures of 7.________ (them) within these spaces. This immersive experience 8.________ (give) by popup museums allows visitors to get away from their real life — even just for a short time — and enter a fantasy world. Maybe it's this experience of feeling close to art 9.________ allows popup museums to not only keep “popping up”, but also remain open — at least for 10.________ time being. 根据第一段最后一句“Throw in some diagnosed anxiety, an inability to read social cues(提示)and an unexpected change to his daily routine, and you have the way to deal with a very public breakdown(精神崩溃)”可知,萨姆应对日常生活有困难,故选C。 根据最后一段第一句“So I guess this is a love letter to those of you who have helped a stranger out of the goodness of your heart”并结合对本段的整体理解可推知,作者写本文的目的是感谢那些曾经帮助过陌生人的好心人,故选A。 根据第一段第二句“They became the world's first kids to be ‘taught’ by a digital teacher”可知,他们成为世界上第一批由数字化老师“教”的孩子。 故选A。 根据第三段尾句“This twoway interaction not only helps attract the students' attention .. and make changes if needed”可知,这种双向的互动不仅有助于吸引学生的注意力,还允许该程序的开发人员监视他们的参与度,并在需要时做出改变。 根据最后一段尾句“However, regardless of how popular it becomes, Will is unlikely to replace human educators any time soon”可知,作者认为无论它变得多么受欢迎,Will都不太可能在短期内取代人类教育工作者。 come into existence“出现,存在”。 This is the latest in robot technology. Have you heard the latest news? - 8 - 【知识拓展】 强调句型的结构为:It is/was+被强调部分+that/who+剩余部分。 for the time being“眼下,暂时”是固定搭配,故填定冠词the。
