But such feelings may soon be at an end, says Dr. Harry Witchel, head of the Essex Medical School. He believes that computers of the future will notice when people feel bored and even take action to stop it.‎ Before you get concerned, the machine won’t be reading your mind. It will be observing the many movements you make while using a computer. It’s not interested in the big movements needed to use the machine 一 like moving a mouse or touching a screen — but small, barely noticeable movements like closing your eyes, moving in your seat or rubbing your face. Witchel calls these “boredom movements" and says they show how interested the person is in what they are reading or watching. The higher the interest level, the less movement!‎ To test his theory, Witchel invited 27 people to perform various computer-based tasks. The activities ranged from playing online games (an interesting task) to ‎ reading documents like government laws that most people would find boring.‎ A special video camera followed the participants’ movements as they completed each task. Just as the researcher expected, the “boredom movements" greatly decreased, by as much as 42%,when the subjects were very interested in what they were reading or seeing.‎ Fortunately, Dr Witchel isn’t planning to use his results to create machines that report students who are not paying attention at school. Instead, he wants “movement sensing” technology to be built into future computers in order to improve students' computer-based learning experience.‎ The scientist says that by measuring the students' interest level as they work, educators will be able to adjust their materials in real-time to keep students focused. Witchel also believes that the technology can provide filmmakers with honest audience opinions and in the future, help to develop more intelligent robots.‎ ‎21. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 refer to?‎ A. Homework. B. A computer. C. Boredom. D. The future.‎ ‎22. Why did Dr Witchel carry out his research?‎ A. To discover how bored people move. B. To see if interested people are more active.‎ C.To test the link between boredom and movement. D. To find out what makes people bored.‎ ‎23. How will the new technology help education, according to Witchel?‎ A. By reducing teachers' workload. B. By maintaining students' learning interest.‎ C. By reporting students' misbehavior in class. D. By making learning more like a computer game.‎ ‎ ( B )‎ ‎ Education and Training Make Sure Your Skills Are Up-to-date ‎ Whether you’re looking for a new job because you are currently unemployed or you want to change career, having up-to-date skills is the key to a successful job search ‎ and your future earning power.‎ Choose the Right Training ‎ If you need training to learn new skills or enhance existing skills, make sure you do your homework. I’m not a football commentator(评论员),though--just an English teacher in Japan. I came to Japan two years ago, and didn't think I would stay, but Japan has that effect on you. People often end up living here longer than they planned. I think it’s best to teach in a biggest city where there are other foreigners to mix with. Rather than a small town where English teachers often complain of feeling like a goldfish in a bowl. Many people choose to live in Tokyo, of course, which is good for the nightlife factor. But I’d say that for general quality of living, cities of neither too large nor too small, like Sapporo where I live, are better choices. I teach English privately, which means I’m my own boss. If you want to devote yourself to private teaching, it’s well worth doing a TEFL course first. Because your lessons will be much better for it. The problem with private teaching is finding students; it took me a year to build up a full schedule(日程表)of private ‎ lessons, so I started out teaching in schools part time. Most of my foreign friends here work full-time for big English conversation schools. The salary is fine to live on. But whether you can save money depends on how much going out and traveling you do here. The schools are reluctant to take time off–-even teachers with tickets for the England-Argentina game had a hard time getting the day off.‎ ‎28. From the passage we know in Japan the write likes to jive in_______. A. Tokyo B. a small town C. a city of middle size D. a big city ‎29. According to the writer, one had better ________ first to do private teaching better. A. take a TEFL course B. decide his or her own lessons C. find students D. build up a full schedule ‎30. The underlined sentence in the second paragraph implies that_______. A. there are many foreigners in Japan B.they can teach English privately in Japan C. Japan is good for nightlife D. Japan has something more attractive than expected ‎31. The underlined word “reluctant” in the passage may probably mean_____. A. kind B. unwilling C. free D. careless ‎ ( D ) ‎ ‎ Success doesn’t begin until you begin the walk down the way towards your goals. And your walk down the way always begins first with a baby step. Why do we call them baby steps? Are they really anything more than our next step down life’s way?‎ ‎ Baby steps are the first steps we take as an act of faith. We see others stepping out and we want to show our ability to walk by following them. As we grow, we continue our development by taking extra baby steps. Sometimes we fall; sometimes we fail. After that, all steps become an act of faith; we just become more practiced. If you say to yourself “I don’t want to make a fool of myself” or “I’d better be good at this”, you’ll probably never take the baby steps towards your goals and end up lying in your own self-pity.‎ ‎ As a culture, we focus on results. We think about every risk that must be taken to reach our goals. There’re few people who’re excellent performers of any tasks the first time they try them. They fail and succeed. Then, they build on their abilities learned each time. They practice the skills and use their talents through baby steps before they’re ready to prove them to the world.‎ ‎ So, learn to take those baby steps to reach the goals before you. Know that you can depend on God to show you the way. As you become more experienced, your baby steps become a walk, then a jump, and finally a sprint. That’s how our baby steps lead us through the marathon of life.‎ ‎32. Which of the following is thought most important in taking baby steps?‎ ‎ A. Faith. B. Practice. C. Skill. D. Examples. ‎ ‎33. In the third paragraph, the writer expresses the view that . ‎ ‎ A. we can’t expect to succeed without working hard at first ‎ ‎ B. adults should learn from babies in dealing with hard tasks ‎ ‎ C. we must make full use of our skills in order to get rewards ‎ ‎ D. baby steps play the key role in leading us towards success ‎34. The underlined word “sprint” in the last paragraph probably means “ ”.‎ ‎ A. slow rush B. sudden stop C. hard climb D. fast run ‎35. What’s the writer’s tone in the text?‎ ‎ A. Light-hearted. B. Regretful. C. Encouraging. D. Concerned. ‎ 第一节 ‎ (共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ ‎ ( E ) ‎ ‎ Are you actually sick when you have spring fever?
