If it were possible to read someone’s mind then it would be very easy to know whether a person is lying to you. Unfortunately, there is no machine which can be used to read one’s thoughts to know if they are telling the truth. Luckily, the body usually gives away clues to help you know if someone is lying or not.‎ You can use the following tips to help you know if someone is lying.‎ ‎1-Eye Contact Most people who lie to you will generally avoid eye contact. People usually make eye contact for at least half of their conversation. However, eye contact is not always effective because there are some people who will deliberately(故意地) try to make eye contact with you so that you can believe them.‎ ‎2-Defensive(辩护的)‎ Sometimes when somebody is telling a lie they will try to be overly defensive. They may even accuse you or somebody else of lying. In that case you should know that he/she has something to hide.‎ ‎3-Unusual Body Moments If a person starts moving restlessly with their hands tapping their foot, or turning away from you it could mean that they are telling you a lie. However, this technique is only effective if you know someone very well including their behaviors.‎ ‎4-Changing the subject A guilty person will often try to change the subject once they realize that you are on their tail. They will usually try to use sarcasm or humor to change the topic. In that case you should be more alert and try to refer back to the topic they were trying to avert.‎ ‎21.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?‎ ‎ A. How to Tell if One Person is Lying.‎ ‎ B. How to Distinguish True or False.‎ ‎ C. What to Do With Liars. ‎ ‎ D. What Eye Contact to Make.‎ ‎22. According to the author we can know that________?‎ ‎ A. lying to others is contrary to morality.‎ ‎ B. it is natural to know what a lie is.‎ ‎ C. everyone can avoid telling lies.‎ ‎ D. the body usually gives away the secret if someone is lying.‎ ‎23. Making eye contact with a speaker is__________.‎ ‎ A. a definitive sign to tell if a person is lying.‎ ‎ B. usually taking place during the talk.‎ ‎ C. what everyone does when telling lies.‎ ‎ D. a means to talk with others.‎ B Many people go to school for education. They learn languages, history, geography, physics, chemistry and mathematics. Others go to school to learn a skill so that they can make a ‎ living. School education is very important and useful. Yet no one can learn everything they want to know. The teacher’s job is to show his students how to learn. He or she teaches them how to read and how to think. So, much more is to be learned outside school by students themselves.‎ ‎ It is always more important to know how to study by oneself than to memorize some facts or a formula(公式). It is usually quite easy to learn a certain fact in history or a formula in mathematics. But it is very difficult to use a formula in working out a maths problem. Great scientists, such as Einstein, Newton and Galileo didn’t get anything from school. But they were all so successful.‎ The reason for their success is that they knew how to study. They read books that were not taught at school. They worked hard all their lives, not wasting a single moment. They would ask many questions as they read and they did thousands of experiments.‎ ‎ Above all, they knew how to use their brains.‎ ‎24. According to Paragraph1, many people go to school for education, while others go to school for__________.‎ ‎ A. enjoying themselves. B. learning subjects. C. learning a skill. D. making friends.‎ ‎25. A teacher’s job is mainly to train his students to__________.‎ ‎ A. master the learning methods. B. make a living. . ‎ C. read and think. D. study all the subjects.‎ ‎26. Using a formula in working out a maths problem is ___________ memorizing a formula.‎ ‎ A. much easier than. B. more difficult than.‎ ‎ C. as easy as. D. as difficult as.‎ ‎27. The passage mainly tells us____________.‎ ‎ A. The scientists worked harder than us. ‎ B. Schools can teach us everything we want to know. ‎ C. We go to school to receive education and we should know how to learn. ‎ D. Without schools, we can learn more by ourselves.‎ C Mr. White sold kinds of machines to farmers, which he thought was not really a very exciting ‎ job, but he had always been interested in traveling on business.‎ He had a big car, and usually enjoyed driving long distances, but he was also quite satisfied to go by train sometimes, especially when the weather was bad. He was a little frightened of driving in the rain or snow, and it was less tiring to sit comfortably in a train and look out of the windows without being worried about how to get to the next place.‎ One of Mr. White’s problems was often where to stay when he reached some small places in the country. He did not expect timely and wonderful food, but he found it annoying(令人恼火的) when he was given a cold room, and when there was no hot water after a long and tiring journey.‎ Later one winter evening, Mr. White arrived at a small railway station. The journey by train that day had not been at all interesting, and Mr. White was cold and tired and hungry. He was looking forward to a simple but satisfying meal by a brightly burning fire, and then a hot bath and a comfortable bed.‎ While he was walking to the taxi stand, he said to a local man who was also walking there, “As this is my first visit to this part of the country and I was in too much of a hurry to find out the hotels before I left home, I would very much like to know how many hotels you have here.”‎ The local man answered, “We have two.”‎ ‎“And which of the two would you advise me to go to?” Mr. White asked then.‎ The local man scratched(抓挠) his head for a moment and then answered, “Well, it’s like this—whichever one you go to, you’ll be sorry you don’t go to the other.”‎ ‎28.What was Mr. White according to the passage ?‎ ‎ A. He was a salesman. B. He was a businessman. ‎ ‎ C. He was a traveler. D. He was a reporter.‎ ‎29. Mr. White liked his job very much.‎ B. neither hotel in that place was good.‎ C. Mr. White wasn’t afraid of driving in the rain.‎ D. the local man didn’t know which hotel was better.‎ D ‎ Having friends may well keep you healthier and help you deal with stress better.
