A A new report shows that there are just 7,100 of the world's fastest land animals now left in the wild.Cheetahs(猎豹) are in trouble now. According to the study, more than half the world's surviving cheetahs live in one population that ranges across six countries in southern Africa.Cheetahs in Asia have been nearly wiped out. It's thought that a group with fewer than 50 cheetahs lives on in Iran. Because the cheetah is one of the widestranging animals,it runs across lands far outside protected areas. Some 77% of their habitat(栖息地) falls outside these protected areas. As a result, the animal struggles because these lands are increasingly being developed by farmers and the cheetah's food is decreasing because of human hunting. In Zimbabwe, the cheetah population has fallen from around 1,200 to just 170 animals in 16 years, with the main cause being major changes in land tenure. Researchers say that the threats facing the world's fastest animals have gone unnoticed for far too long.“Given the secret nature of the cheetah,it has been difficult to gather hard information on them.” said Dr Sarah Durant, the report's leader.“Our findings show that the large space requirements for cheetahs and various threats faced by them in the wild mean that they are likely to be in danger of dying out.” Another of the big concerns about cheetahs has been the illegal trafficking(非法交易) of young cheetahs. The young cats can fetch up to $10,000 on the black market. Some 1,200 young cheetahs are known to have been trafficked out of Africa over the past 10 years but around 85% of them died during the journey. If the cheetah is to survive long term, then urgent efforts must be made to solve the question of protected areas and ranges. 6 1.Where do most of the cheetahs live now? A.In Asia. B.In Africa. C.In Europe. D.In America. 根据第二段中的“more than half the world's surviving cheetahs live in one population that ranges across six countries in southern Africa”可知,世界上现存的猎豹中,超过一半遍布南部非洲的六个国家。] 2.What is the main reason of cheetahs in trouble? A.Serious illnesses. B.Poor health. C.Climate changes. D.Human activities. 3.What has happened to young cheetahs? A.Their population has increased in Zimbabwe. B.They are getting along very well with people. C.Many of them are sold on the black market. D.They have survived longer term than before. C。] 4.What's the best title for the text? A.Cheetahs are dying out. B.Cheetahs' protected areas. C.The secret nature of the cheetah. D.Cheetahs mostly live in Africa. B Seated on the porch of an aging house, you can see shadows on the lawn moving as the wind threads through the trees.A leaf floats to the ground, suggesting the coming of fall. This wide porch was built as the main part of the house. The rest of the house is around it on both sides, like huge arms extending a hug. Countless stories have been shared on this porch by every member of the family for over 30 years.Screen doors on either side of the porch lead into the house. The 6 doors are wider than today's standard doors. They were crafted (精心制作) long ago, which shows their detail, beauty and strength. The family that grew here enjoyed everyday pleasures—singing in the car, laughter at mealtime and football games on Sundays. When the father hit 55,his wife insisted he quit playing Sunday afternoon football with the kids. The mother never played,as she was stricken with a terrible illness after the birth of their second child.Never able to walk again, she managed to carry on anyway and raise her five children.Sometimes, she even had to manage by dragging herself across the floor. She never complained about the challenges of her illness, not did her husband complain about the extra care he had to give his wife after she became ill. There's something familiar when entering the house. It's the smell of the piles of old books, and magazines, the sheet music on the piano, and the decorations on the shelf in the corner.Pictures of the family are still all hung in every room. The couple are no longer there—they both recently passed away. And yet, they both still linger(徘徊) throughout the house.Their lives are still evident, woven into the laughter and the hearts of their family and friends. They weren't rock stars or celebrities and they wouldn't be remembered in history books.Yet they made a history of their own by creating simple beauty in everyday life and by living through challenges without complaining. That is truly the best remembrance of all. 5.What can we know about the house? A.It has a wide porch on both sides. B.It is filled with many useless things. C.It has witnessed many of the family's stories. D.It looks new, beautiful and strong. 根据第二段中的“Countless stories have been shared on this porch by every member of the family for over 30 years”可知,这所老房子承载了这个家庭的许多回忆和故事,因此答案为C。 6.What can we conclude about the family from the article? A.Their lives were full of misfortune. B.They led a tough but happy life. C.They received a lot of help from their friends. 6 D.The whole family loved playing football. 根据第三段的内容及最后一段中的“by creating simple beauty in everyday life and by living through challenges without complaining”可知,B项正确。] 7.What was the couple's attitude toward hardships in their lives? A.Grateful. B.Optimistic. C.Cautious. D.Favorable. B。] 8.The author wrote this article mainly to . A.introduce the history of the house to readers B.tell a love story about the house's owners C.remind readers to enjoy simple pleasures in life D.recall the memory of the family that lived in the house D International Women's Day takes place every year on 8 March to celebrate the achievements of women all over the world. It started with a protest(抗议) that took place in New York City in 1908.Then women went out onto the streets to demand the right to vote, shorter working hours and better pay.Since then it has taken many forms and today it's a global event. 1 In other countries it's an official holiday but only for women. 2 If you watch the news you will see women astronauts, women prime ministers and women leaders in business. However,if you look at the statistics(统计数据) you realize there's still a long way to go.The BBC did a report a few years ago that showed that in the UK women took only 30.9% of the most senior positions across a range of jobs in areas like politics, business and policing. So there is still a lot for us to do. 3 4 There are exhibitions, theatre shows, talks, discussions, walking 6 tours, films, workshops, fun runs and so much more. All the events are designed to celebrate the role of women in society and to make us all take a step back and think about the progress that has been made. 5 The purpose is to make sure the world is a fair and equal place for all people.
