The Indians, in turn, many have passed on the secret to the Arabs and Persians. Marco Polo, an Italian who travelled widely in the thirteenth century, noted that he found the Chinese had long been making ices out of fruit juices and milk. From the fourteenth century on, ices became popular first in Venice and then throughout Italy. In 1535, when Catherine de Medeicis left Italy to marry the future King Herry II of France, she took her cooks with her. They made desserts the French had never tasted before, which was ice cream. At first ice cream was a luxury in France. Only rich people had the money to buy it. Then, in 1660, a young man from Sicily, Francisco Procopio, arrived in Paris. He opened a shop that sold ice cream at prices people could afford. Then his ice cream became so popular that other shops were opened. Now she has a chance to see this wish come true thanks to Build On, an American non-profit organization that is building a school in her community. For 17 years, Build On has been sending American high school students overseas to create schools in places where literacy (文化) and formal education are usually out of reach. The organization has built about 300 schools in Mali, Malawi, Nepal, Senegal, Nicaragua and Haiti. Its goal is to get young Americans in mostly urban areas to get involved in education. At the same time it can bring literacy to children and adults in poor villages in the developing world. Sounkala’s current school only has about 70 children; mud floors, poor lighting, few desks and an absence of books mean that the school is not the most ideal learning environment. Therefore they certainly could use Build On’s help. Samaké hasn’t been to school, but she wants a better future for her five daughters, including Ramatou, 12, and Mariam, 10. “When a woman attends school, she will teach what she learns to her children,” said Ramatou, who wants to become a doctor. “She will also know how to take better care of her family.” Build On tries to build schools for grades one to three. If things go well over those three years, they return to help build another school for grades four to six, and then set up evening adult literacy classes. Ramatou and Mariam will not learn inside the walls of Build On school since they are already in the sixth grade, but Samaké hopes that they will be able to attend evening classes to continue learning. 28. An organization that helps build schools for people in poor areas D If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language? According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles. The study also found the effect is greater when the younger people learn a second language. A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners. Scans showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible (灵活的 ),” he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.” The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and thirty-four. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists. 32. What is the main subject talked about in this passage? A. Language learning can help brain power. B. Man’s ability of learning a second language. C. Science on learning a second language. D. Language learning and maths study. 33. Why does the writer mention “exercise” in the second paragraph? A. To say language is also a kind of physical labor. B. To make people believe language learning helps grey matter work well. C. To show the importance of using the language when you learn the language. D. To prove that one needs more practice when he (she) is learning a language. 34. What does the underlined word “bilingual” probably mean in the third paragraph? A. a researcher on language learning B. a second language learner C. a person who can speak two languages D. an active language learner 35. What does the author want to tell us by the last two paragraphs? A. Learning a second language is the same as studying maths B. You’d better choose the ages between 2 and 34 to learn a second language C. Italian is the best choice for you as a second language D. Early learning of a second language helps you a great deal in studying other subjects 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) Practical Ways to Show Respect for a Friend ●Show respect for their life choices and decisions 36 .They will make different life choices, have different views on politics and religion, and act differently in many ways. M: Two student tickets, please. Here are our student IDs. Text 3 W: Jim, do you know anyone who can help me with this terrible washing machine? M: Usually, I will call the Nelsons’ company, but if you want to spend less, you may call the Andersons instead. Text 4 M: Hello, is there a flight leaving for London at 11:00? W: Nothing round that time, but there are flights leaving at 10:20 and 11:45. M: All right, I’ll take the earlier one. Text 5 M: Jennifer, our business is growing fast. Please make sure that we have enough paper to keep up with our work. W: I remember we bought some last month. Shall I order some more now? M: Yes, please do. Text 6 M: Hello. Could you please help us? We’d like a map of this city. W: Yes, here you are. M: Oh, could you also give us some information about the film festival? W: Take this booklet. M: Thank you very much. Text 7 W: Well, I’d better be going. My train is about to leave anytime now. M: Right. W: It was nice meeting you. Thanks for coming to see me off. M: That’s all right. It was nice meeting you, too. I really enjoyed the concert. I think it went really well. All the songs you sang last night were great. M: Well, fishing and oil & gas industries are important parts in Bergen’s economy. Trade and traveling by sea also play an important role. Many tourists visit the city every year. M: Uh…how much is it exactly? W: Well, 200 pounds a week. M: 200 pounds? W: Look, why don’t you come round and see the flat? Then you can make up your mind. It’s better than trying to talk about it over the phone. M: Yes. May I see it now? W: Well, it’s a bit difficult for me this morning. I’ve got to go out. M: How about this afternoon? At about three?
