Biblo Toyen, Oslo This children-only library is aimed at 10 to 15-year-old children. Adults are not allowed in and must wait outside for their children to come out. The library is run along normal lines, with library cards for borrowing books, and is particularly well suited to children after the school day is over. After consulting young readers in focus groups, the designers have put a truck with a functional kitchen in the back (the library also runs activities including cookery courses) and a reading sofa. Books are arranged by themes, which means no book has a fixed location. At night, a drone (无人机)flies around library to scan and update the books’ positions. Bellprat, Catalonia, Spain In many ways, this small village is the ideal book town. It is in a beautiful rural setting in Catalonia’s Anoia region, yet only 90km from Barcelona. It has an attractive center and its population is enthusiastic about throwing open its doors to book-loving visitors. Bellprat is also the first book town in Catalonia. During the town’s main festival — on the first weekend in June — several village houses are temporarily(临时地) turned into secondhand bookshops, as there are not enough stalls (摊位) in the market. The books on sale are mainly in the Catalan language, however. As well as promoting the village, the book town label is used for good causes: at a recent festival, there was an activity in which books could be exchanged in return for donations to a food bank. Other book-based events range from meetings and readings to events run by independent publishers. This is very much a community-run book town. From simple beginnings in 2008, it now offers visitors more than 20,000 books for sale. This is impressive, given that the population of the village is under 100. 21. What may people see if they are in the library in Biblo Toyen . A. Adults are picking up books for their children. B. Parents are drinking coffee while their children are reading. C. All of the books are in fixed locations. D. A drone is working there at night. 22. What do we know about Bellprat? A. It is the first book town in Spain. B. People there are very friendly towards book lovers. C. It is an ideal village far from Barcelona. D. It came into existence in 2008 with a large population. 23. What do people usually do during their main festival in Bellprat? A. Visit all secondhand bookshops. B. Sell and buy books in the market. C. Exchange books for food to eat. D. Hold meetings among publishers. B Once, Buddha( 佛陀) was walking from one town to another with some of his followers. This was in the initial days. While they were traveling, they happened to pass a lake. They stopped there and Buddha told one of his followers, “I am thirsty. Please get me some water from that lake there”. The follower walked up to the lake. When he reached it, he noticed that some people were washing clothes in the water and, right at that moment, a bullock cart started crossing the lake right at the edge of it. As a result, the water became very muddy, very dirty. The follower thought, “How can I give this muddy water to Buddha to drink?!” So he came back and told the Buddha, “The water in there is very muddy. I don’t think it is fit to drink”. So, the Buddha said, let us take a little rest here by the tree. After about half an hour, again Buddha asked the same follower to go back to the lake and get him some water to drink. The follower obediently ( 顺 从 地 ) went back to the lake. This time he found that the lake had absolutely clear water in it. The mud had settled down and the water above it looked fit to be had. So he collected some water in a pot and brought it to the Buddha. The Buddha looked at the water, and then he looked up at the follower and said, “See, you let the water be and the mud settled down on its own. You got clear water. It didn’t require any effort”. Our mind is also like that. When it is disturbed, just let it be. Give it a little time and it will settle down on its own. You don’t have to put in any effort to calm it down. We can judge and best decisions of our life when we stay calm. 24. Why did Buddha asked his follower to collect water? A. Because they were travelling. B. Because they were passing a river. C. Because Buddha was too tired to go on. D. Because Buddha wanted a drink. 25. What does the underlined word “it” in the third paragraph refer to? A. The tree. B. The lake. C. The mud. D. The pot. 26. What can you infer about the follower? A. He is reliable and thoughtful. B. He is humorous and smart. C. He is selfish and dependent. D. He is lazy and impatient. 27. What is the best title for the text? A. Trial and Error. B. Sometimes Just Let it Be. C. Buddha and His Follower. D. Efforts will Pay Off. Considered to be the world’s greatest scientist, Hawking was also a cosmologist( 宇 宙 学 家 ), astronomer, mathematician and author of many books. His book, A Brief History of Time, has sold more than 10million copies. Hawking suffered from ALS in 1963, and doctors gave him only a few years to live. The disease left Hawking paralyzed (瘫痪的) and using a wheelchair to move about. He was able to move only a few fingers on one hand and was completely dependent on others or on technology for almost everything — bathing, dressing, eating, even speech. “I try to lead as normal a life as possible, and not think about my condition, or regret the things it prevents me from doing, which are not that many,” he wrote on his website. “I have been lucky that my condition has progressed more slowly than is often the case. It shows that one need not lose hope. Hawking was born in Oxford, England, on an important date: January 8, 1942 — the 300th anniversary of the death of physicist Galileo Galilei. Hawking became a hero to maths and science fans and a pop-culture figure, guest-starring as himself on Star Trek: The Next Generation and The Simpsons. His life was presented in the 2014 movie The Theory of Everything. At Cambridge University, he held the position of Lucasian Professor of Mathematics — the post previously held by Sir Isaac Newton — for 30 years until 2009. After stepping down, Hawking continued to work at the university as director of research at the Institute for Theoretical Cosmology. The following year, he wrote The Grand Design with Leonard Mlodinow. He had at least 12 honorary degrees and was awarded a CBE in 1982. 28. D Some people have tried locking their mobiles away in order to fight against their smartphone addiction( 上瘾), while others have used some tricks such as making their screens black and white. But the cure to smartphone addiction may lie in an app that rewards users for leaving their phone alone. The new app, called Hold, can detect (检测) when users have used their smart phones and gives them points dependent on how long they avoid the temptation( 引 诱 ) of looking at Facebook, for example. Upon downloading it for free, users receive 10 points for every 20 minutes spent without touching their phone between 7:00 and 23:00 every day of the week, with a user email address needed to receive the rewards. To get half price Vue cinema tickets, users need 60 points. For two free coffees from Café Nero, users need 300 points, and a glass of juice for 90 points. For £5 Amazon vouchers (代金券), users need to have collected 1,000 points. Hold was created by Maths Mathisen, Florian Winder and Vinoth Vinaya — three Norwegians. They noticed that young people’s dependence on their smart phones was getting out of hand while studying at Copenhagen Business School. Rather than punish their users, the three found that the best way to get them to put their phones down was to use tricks that got them interested in the first place. Lots of studies in recent years point to the worrying rise of smartphone addiction and the effects of smartphones on education. Researchers from the London School of Economics found that students who did not use their phones at school found their grades improved by 6.5 percent. Café Nero, Amazon and planet Organic will also offer discounts on the Hold marketplace. Students will also be offered the choice to use points to buy school books which are then donated to some schools. 32. According to the text, the student users of Hold . A. need to pay a certain amount of money B. can improve their grades by 6.5% C. need to register (注册) with their email address D. receive 10 points for a 10-minute break 33. What is the main idea of the second paragraph? A. How the Hold app works. B. What we need to use the Hold. C. The development of the Hold. D. The tests the Hold app needs to pass. 34. To get one half price Vue cinema ticket and two free coffees from Café Nero, a user needs to have minutes’ worth of points. . A. 120 B. 180 C. 600 D. 720 35. The purpose of this text is to . Being able to remember important pieces of information can give you a powerful advantage in life. 36 Here are four ways to improve your memory. Make the most of your imagination. 37 For example, to remember where you have left your car keys, pretend to hold a camera to your eyes, focus on the scene, and click the image into your memory when you are leaving. This technique works with almost everything you want to remember, as the roll of film in your mind is endless. Try to practice. There are lots of ways to do this: try to remember which day of the week your last birthday was. 38 Try to remember all the ping-pong finalists and the winner. If you can try to remember the scores as well, it will be even better. It won’t be long before your daily practice pays off, making your mind sharper and more adaptable. Get physical exercise. 39 A combination of mental and physical activity can protect your memory. It is known that the brain’s processing speed gradually slows as you age.
