A With the average number of children in a British family falling beneath an average of 2.0, the population of the UK has been declining for quite a few years. The size of the British workforce is declining. This trend is quite worrying for the British economy. There is a whole range of reasons accounting for the worrying trend. One of them is that British people are now having their children at a much older age than previously, meaning they have fewer years in which they can have children. Most young people today tend to choose to go to university first and build up work experience before getting desired jobs. Expensive houses also play a part. Many young people are forced to stay with their parents early in their careers. So it’s not until people are about 30 years old that they can afford to buy their own home, and then they can start to think about settling down and having children. So a British person manages to get a job, get a home and get married. Why isn’t he or she then having at least two children on average? The major reason is that it is relatively expensive to bring up a child in the UK. Usually both parents need to work to cover their living expenses, which means they then need to pay someone to look after their child during the day, such as nanny(保姆)or nursery school. In addition, uncertainty in the global economy often affects British family size. In face of an economic downturn, young British find it more difficult to find jobs or keep their existing ones. This discourages them from having larger families. And with this much pressure on families, it’s no wonder that the divorce rate remains so high. To save the British family, the government is taking active measures, for example, by increasing monthly Child Benefit money and offering increasing amount of government subsidy(津贴)for parents to claim. There are also laws allowing parents to take more time off work so that they can look after their children themselves rather than having to pay others to do it. Let’s hope it’s not too late to save the British family. Otherwise, the British won’t have enough time, energy or money to have children. And where’s the fun in that? 21. According to the author, what may account for the decrease of UK’s population? A.People’s choice of being single to acquire further education. B.The trend for people to have children at a younger age. C.Larger family size brought by weak global economy. D.The relatively high expenses in raising children. 22. What does the author mainly imply in the last paragraph? A.It is important to raise people’s awareness of saving the British family. B.It is necessary to reduce subsidies for families and nursery schools. C.It is urgent to handle the present serious situation. D.It is difficult for parents to balance life and work. 23. What is the best title for the passage? A.Disappearing Families B.Declining Economy C.Increasing Divorce D.Worrying Workforce B A scientist working at her lab bench and a six-month-old baby playing with his food might seem to have little in common. After all, the scientist is engaged in serious research to uncover the very nature of the physical world, and the baby is, well, just playing…right? Perhaps, but some developmental psychologists have argued that this “play” is more like a scientific investigation than one might think. Take a closer look at the baby playing at the table. Each time the bowl of rice is pushed over the table edge, it falls to the ground——and, in the process, it brings out important evidence about how physical objects interact(相互作用); bowls of rice do not float in mid-air, but require support to remain stable. It is likely that babies are not born knowing this basic fact of the universe; nor are they ever clearly taught it. Instead, babies may form an understanding of object support through repeated experiments and then build on this knowledge to learn even more about how objects interact. Though their ranges and tools differ, the baby’s investigation and the scientist’s experiment appear to share the same aim(to learn about the natural world), overall approach(gathering direct evidence from the world), and logic(are my observations what I expected?). Some psychologists suggest that young children learn about more than just the physical world in this way——that they investigate human psychology and the rules of language using similar means. For example, it may only be through repeated experiments, evidence gathering, and finally overturning a theory, that a baby will come to accept the idea that other people can have different views and desires from what he or she has, for example, unlike the child, Mommy actually doesn’t like Dove chocolate. Viewing childhood development as a scientific investigation throws light on how children learn, but it also offers an inspiring look at science and scientists. Why do young children and scientists seem to be so much alike? Psychologists have suggested that science as an effort——the desire to explore, explain, and understand our world——is simply something that comes from our babyhood. Perhaps evolution(进化)provided human babies with curiosity and a natural drive to explain their worlds, and adult scientists simply make use of the same drive that served them as children. The same cognitive(认知的)systems that make young children feel good about figuring something out may have been adopted by adult scientists. As some psychologists put it, “It is not that children are little scientists but that scientists are big children.” 24. According to some developmental psychologists, . A.a baby’s play is nothing more than a game B.scientific research into babies’ games is possible C.the nature of babies’ play has been thoroughly investigated D.a baby’s play is somehow similar to a scientist’s experiment 25. We learn from Paragraph 2 that . A.scientists and babies seem to observe the world differently B.babies seem to collect evidence just as scientists do C.babies are born with the knowledge of object support D.scientists and babies often interact with each other 26. Children may learn the rules of language by . A.exploring the physical world B.investigating human psychology C.repeating their own experiments D.observing their parents’ behaviors C I had been living in a whirl: studying the organ at the University of Arizona, conducting a speech clinic in town, and teaching a class in musical appreciation at the Desert Willow Ranch, where I was staying. I was going to parties, dances, horseback rides under the stars. One morning I collapsed. My heart! “You will have to lie in bed for a year of complete rest,” the doctor said. He didn’t encourage me to believe I would ever be strong again. In bed for a year! To be invalid——perhaps to die! I was terror-stricken! Why did all this have to happen to me? What had I done to deserve it? I swept. I was bitter. But I did go to bed as the doctor advised. A neighbor of mine, Mr. Rudolf, an artist, said to me: “You think now that spending a year in bed will be a tragedy. But it won’t be. You will have time to think and get acquainted with yourself. You will make more spiritual growth in these next few months than you have made during all your previous life.” I became calmer, and tried to develop a new sense of values. I read books of inspiration. One day I heard a radio commentator say: “You can express only what is in your own consciousness.” I had heard the words like these many times before, but now they reached down inside me and took root. I determined to think only the thoughts I wanted to live by: thoughts of joy, happiness, health. I forced myself each morning, as soon as I awoke, to go over all the things I had to be grateful for. No pain. A lovely young daughter. My eyesight. My hearing. Lovely music on the radio. Time to read. Good food. Good friends. I was so cheerful and had so many visitors that the doctor put up a sign saying that only one visitor at a time would be allowed in my cabin——and only at certain hours. Nine years have passed since then, and I now lead a full, active life. I am deeply grateful now for that year I spent in bed. It was the most valuable and the happiest year I spent in Arizona. The habit I formed then of counting my blessings each morning still remains with me. It is one of my most precious possessions. 27. The writer had to lie in bed for a year because . A.she was terror-stricken at that time B.she had a serious heart-attack C.she was worn out because of hard work D.the doctor wanted her to do so 28. When told to lie in bed to take a year’s rest, the writer . A.was very grateful to the doctor B.became very worried C.turned to a neighbor Mr. Rudolf for help D.thought of her bitter experiences in the past 29. The reason why the writer said “I am deeply grateful now for that year I spent in bed” lies in that . A.she led a very comfortable life that year B.she became used to lying in bed C.she perfectly recovered from her illness D.she came to know how to lead an active life 30. The writer told us of her story mainly to . A.tell us that we should be grateful for what we have had B.introduce herself to us because she was wise and kind C.explain that lying in bed for a long time is not a terrible thing D.encourage us to achieve as much as we can 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Ways to Fight and Overcome Laziness You read productivity tips, you’ve used a million to-do list apps, and you promise yourself every month that you’re going to start being productive, but it never happens. When a rather dirty, poorly-dressed person kneels at your feet and puts out his hands to beg for a few coins, do you hurry on, not knowing what to do, or do you feel sad and hurriedly hand over some money? What should our attitude to beggars be? There can’t be no question that the world is full of terrible sad stories. It must be terrible to have no idea where our next meal is coming from. It seems cruel not to give some money to beggars. Certainly, most of the world’s great religions order us to be open-hearted and share what we have with those less fortunate than ourselves. But has the world changed? Maybe what was morally right in the old days, when one knew exactly who in the village had suffered misfortune and needed help, is no longer the best idea. Quite a few people will not give to beggars. Let us look at their arguments. First, some believe that many city beggars dress up on purpose to look pitiable and actually make a good living from begging. Giving to beggars only encourages this sort of evils. Secondly, there is the worry that the money you give will be spent on beer, wine or drugs. Thirdly, there is the opinion that there is no real excuse for begging. One might be poor, but that is no reason for losing one’s sense of pride and self-dependence. Related to this is the opinion that the problem should be dealt with by the government rather than ordinary people. Some people think beggars should go to the local government department and receive help. It is hard to come to a conclusion: there are various cases and we must deal with them differently. A few coins can save a life in some situations, and even if the money is wasted, that does not take away the moral goodness of the giver. 56. a 57.used 58.up 59.pretending 60.Neither 61.truly 62.was told/had been told 63.Success 64.on 65.who 书面表达 应用文 Dear David, I am writing to show my deep apology for not being able to make the Daily Report tomorrow. As one of the representatives of our school, I am scheduled to participate in a Poetry Reading Competition tomorrow, which makes it impossible for me to attend your English class. However, practising my spoken English in your class is what I have been longing for, so it would be a real pity just to let the chance slip away. I sincerely hope you can rearrange my presentation, offering me another opportunity. Once again, I am sorry for any inconvenience caused. Hope you can accept my apology and thank you for your understanding. Yours sincerely, Li Hua 概要 In old times people thought it was morally right to help the less fortunate, but today many choose not to give beggars money. They think some beggars make a good living from begging or they worry the money given will be misused. Besides, it’s the government’s duty to deal with the problem. However, different cases call for different solutions. And we should recognize the giver’s goodness. 听力(Text 1) M: What floor would you like me to press? W: Thirty-six, please. M: We’re on the same floor. I’m in the Williams Company. W: Me too. I’m new here. (Text 2) M: Jane, suppose you lost all your money while taking a vacation overseas, what would you do? W: Well, I guess I’d sell my watch or computer or do some odd jobs till I could afford a return plane ticket. (Text 3) W: If I were you, I’d take the bus to work. Driving in that rush-hour is terrible. M: But by the time the bus gets to my stop, there aren’t any seats left. (Text 4) M: Now remember. We’d like the master bedroom to open onto the garden and the pool area. W: Don’t worry. I have everything written down. I’ll have your plan ready in two weeks, and I’m sure you’ll be pleased with the design I have in mind. (Text 5) M: Why was the office door locked yesterday when I came back for an important document that I had asked you to prepare? W: Sorry, Mr. Lawson. You know, my daughter had a bad cold, so I had to take her to the doctor. (Text 6) W: Sir, may I help you? M: I’d like a ticket to Chicago. W: For today? M: No, early Monday morning. W: We have a flight that will put there at 9 am, is that OK? M: Nothing earlier? I have an appointment at 8:30. W: I’m afraid not, unless you want a night flight. M: A night flight? W: Yes. It will get you there bright and early, at 6:45 am in fact. Is that too early? M: I guess that will be OK. What’s the difference in price? W: Better price. Night flight is cheaper. One way or round trip? M: One way. W: Well. The flight number is 302 at Gate Five. M: Thank you. I’ll be there on time. (Text 7) W: Peter, you’re learning to drive, aren’t you? Do you go to the AA Driving School? M: Actually it’s called the ABC Driving School. W: Is it expensive? M: I’ve had ten lessons already and each one is fourteen dollars. W: I see. And is the teacher’s car new? M: Yes, and it’s not a big car, so parking is easy. W: When are you going to take your driving test? M: I failed it last week. W: Did you hit something or… M: The traffic lights were red but I didn’t see them and I couldn’t brake in time. W: Never mind. You can take the test again. Tell me about your teacher. Is he friendly? M: He’s OK. He’s quite young and interesting to talk to, but my father will give me my next lessons. He’s cheaper. (Text 8) W: What’s wrong with you? M: I get the blues. I always feel sad and worthless. W: Well, we all get the blues now and again. However, if the blues last for a long time and lead to difficulty in thinking and make your daily life in chaos, it can be a mental problem. How long have you been like this? M: For quite a long time. W: You may have a mental problem. It can be caused by over-use of drugs. Those who have a family history of mental illness usually have a greater risk of this problem. I can’t even put my feet in! M: I’m really sorry, madam. I will have a check right away. Would you please tell me your order number? W: It is X25061. M: Oh, just a minute. I do apologize, madam.
