Developing a new type of rice takes a lot of time, but that doesn’t worry 88-year-old Yuan Longping, China’s famous rice scientist, in the least. Yuan, best known as the country’s “father of hybrid rice,” set his eyes on seawater rice two years ago. Seawater rice, also known as salt-alkali-tolerant(耐盐碱的)rice, is designed to grow in tidal flats and on saline-alkaline land, and can survive in seawater, Dubai plans to use 10 percent of its landmass to plant seawater rice, as part of efforts to improve the country’s food security and to protect the local ecosystem. The Sea-Rice Research and Development Center in Qingdao, led by Yuan, started the experiment in January. Researchers selected scores of samples of the seawater tolerant types to plant in a desert field to judge their suitability. According to an evaluation undertaken last week of early-maturing rice samples, it’s expected that yields will reach 750 kilos per square kilometer, and that two samples could yield over 600 kilos per square kilometer, in line with the expectations of researchers. The evaluation of the late-maturing rice samples will start later. The Sea-Rice Research and Development Center and the team in Dubai will explore establishing a 100-hectare test field in the second half of this year, and a 100-hectar standard field in 2019, said Liu Jiayin, from the Qingdao research center. He added, China is also promoting saltwater rice in Southeast and South Asian countries, such as Vietnam, Sri Lanka, and India. Seawater rice could finally feed 80-200 million people in the future. 25.What’s one reason why Dubai decides to grow seawater rice? A. To save land. B. To get more food. C. To improve food safety. D. To change its ecosystem. 26. How much rice will be got per square kilometer from early-maturing rice samples? A. More than 750 kilos. B. 600 kilos to 750 kilos. C. Less than 600 kilos. D. Unknown until later. 27. What can we infer from Liu Jiayin’s words? A. The seawater rice experiment will be continued in Dubai. B. Two 100-hectare fields of seawater rice will be grown this year. C. Seawater rice is popular in Southeast and South Asian countries. D. 80-200 million people are benefiting from seawater rice. 28. Where can you probably find the text? A. In a business story. B. In a fashion magazine. C. In a science textbook. D. In a newspaper report. C Working well in a team requires effective communication. It’s an important skill for almost every employee to have. Your ability to do your job is dependent upon others getting their work done, and others depend on you to get their work done. Communicate well. Lack of communication is one of the biggest reasons of team’s failure. Seek input (投入资源)from team members so they feel like a valuable part of the team. Communicating well can help prevent and resolve conflict. Meet regularly to keep members involved and aware of your work progress. Post decisions where everyone in the team can see them. Be flexible. In teamwork, priorities and responsibility can change instantly. Stay ready to shift focus. Training team members to be able to do parts of other team members’ jobs can be a valuable part of teamwork; being flexible helps to build appreciation for all the parts of the team. Meet deadlines. Work hard to ensure you meet established deadlines when you work in a team environment. Others are depending on your work. Negotiate timeline with your teammates at the start of a project. Doing so allows you to have your say in how work gets accomplished. Establish accountability. All team members must be responsible for the success or failure of the project. Although every team doesn’t need a leader, teams require a formal way to ensure everyone does his part. Try using meetings to report on progress. Celebrate accomplishments and nurture the team. Senior executives may not always recognize the importance of some team members’ work. Openly sharing congratulations at team meetings and talking about whose work are invaluable in helping you get your work done. 29. Ways to Improve the Efficiency of Employees. C. How to Succeed in a Team Environment D. Ways to Work Well in Accomplishing Projects D Every year, in the first week of October, a very few lucky scientists get a phone call. On the other end of the line is someone with a Swedish accent who informs them they have won a Nobel Prize. Almost instantly, these individuals become celebrities. They will give talks, go to fancy parties and meet the King of Sweden. But why is it such a big deal? The awards are named for an inventor, Alfred Nobel. During his life, he was best known for inventing dynamite, a type of explosive which made him a wealthy man. And when he died in 1896, Nobel left money to establish five yearly awards — the Nobel Prizes. In his will, Nobel directed that one award went to recognize outstanding literature. Another two should reward the promoting of international peace and scientific discovery (in physics, chemistry and medicine). All five awards would come with a cash prize. If there are two winners in a category, they split the money equally. If there are three, one person gets half the money, and the other two split the other half. The first set of Nobel Prizes was handed out in 1901. Now, it is reckoned the best known prize worldwide. Every year, thousands of scientists around the world are invited to nominate(提名) people for a Nobel Prize. But no one can nominate themselves. Nominees for different kinds of prizes are evaluated by professional committees consisting of experts in the corresponding field. These committees narrow the list of candidates. Their short lists then move on to a selection committee for each subject. Those committees vote on who will receive the prize — or whether no one should receive it. Even scientists who participated in a discovery might not win a Nobel. The committees that initially set the prize rules decided that a maximum of three people in any category could win each year. Now, scientists often work in large groups to make major discoveries. When a committee can’t find just a few scientists to get the credit, no one might receive a Nobel Prize for this achievement. 33. What do we know about a Nobel Prize winner? A. He will get a cash prize that he must share with other participants equally. B. He will be a person who makes great contributions to the field of mathematics. C. He will rocket to fame all over the world because of his outstanding achievements. D. He will be informed by a phone call or an e-mail at the very beginning of October. 34. What can we learn from the passage? A. The nominees in the same discovery consist of three people at least. B. A selection committee will have the authority to list some candidates. C. Scientists making a discovery will not necessarily be guaranteed a Nobel. D. The King of Sweden is responsible to evaluate nominees in different fields. 35. What is the purpose of writing the passage? A. To tell a story of a Nobel Prize winner. B. To clarify the rules of the Nobel Prize. C. To classify the awards of the Nobel Prize. D. To give an introduction to the Nobel Prize. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Five Tips for Safe Online Shopping Online shopping is indeed a risky affair.
