‎ Secret codes (密码)keep messages private。Banks, companies, and government agencies use secret codes in doing business, especially when information is sent by computer.‎ ‎ People have used secret codes for thousands of years. 36 Code breaking never lags(落后) far behind code making. The science of creating and reading coded messages is called cryptography.‎ ‎ There are three main types of cryptography. 37 For example, the first letters of “My elephant eats too many eels” Spell out the hidden message “Meet me.”‎ ‎38 You might represent each letter with a number, For example, Let’s number the letters of the ‎ alphabet, in order, from 1 to 26. If we substitute a number for each letter, the message “Meet me” would read “13 5 20 13 5.”‎ ‎ A code uses symbols to replace words, phrases, or sentences. To read the message of a real code, you must have a code book. 39 For example “bridge“ might stand for “meet” and “out” might stand for “me.” The message “bridge out” would actually mean “Meet me.” 40 However, it is also hard to keep a code book secret for long. So codes must be changed frequently.‎ A. It is very hard to break a code without the code book. B. In any language, some letters are used more than others. C. Only people who know the keyword can read the message. D. As long as there have been codes, people have tried to break them. E. You can hide a message by having the first letters of each word spell it out. F. With a code book, you might write down words that would stand for other words. G. Another way to hide a message is to use symbols to stand for specific letters of the alphabet. Another way to hide a message is to use symbols to stand for specific letters of the alphabet. With a code book, you might write down words that would stand for other words. It is very hard to break a code without the code book. ‎ A garden that’s just right for you Have you ever visited a garden that seemed just right for you, where the atmosphere of the garden appeared to total more than the sum(总和) of its parts? 16 . But it doesn’t happen by accident. It starts with looking inside yourself and understanding who you are with respect to the natural world and how you approach the gardening process.‎ ‎●___17 ‎ Some people may think that a garden is no more than plants, flowers, patterns and masses of color. Others are concerned about using gardening methods that require less water and fewer fertilizers(肥料). 18 . However, there are a number of other reasons that might explain why you want to garden. One of them comes from our earliest years.‎ ‎●Recall(回忆)your childhood memories ‎ Our model of what a garden should be often goes back to childhood. Grandma’s rose garden and Dad’s vegetable garden might be good or bad, but that’s not what’s important. 19 --how being in those gardens made us feel. If you’d like to build a powerful bond with your garden, start by taking some time to recall the gardens of your youth. 20 then go outside and work out a plan to translate your childhood memories into your grown-up garden. Have fun.‎ A. Know why you garden B. Find a good place for your own garden C. It’s our experience of the garden that matters D. It’s delightful to see so many beautiful flowers E. Still others may simply enjoy being outdoors and close to plants F. You can produce that kind of magical quality in your own garden, too G. For each of those gardens, writer down the strongest memory you have ‎ ‎【答案】16. F 17. A 18. E 19. C 20. G ‎17.A 根据本段前两句“Some people may think that a garden is no more than plants, flowers, patterns and masses of color. Others are concerned about using gardening methods that require less water and fewer fertilizers(肥料).” 本题我们根据倒数第二句“However, there are a number of other reasons that might explain why you want to garden.” ‎ ‎ Everyone knows that fish is good for health. 16 But it seems that many people don’t cook fish ‎ at home. Americans eat only about fifteen pounds of fish per person per year, but we eat twice as much fish in restaurants as at home. Buying, storing, and cooking fish isn’t difficult. 17 This text is about how to buy and cook fish in an easy way.‎ ‎ 18 Fresh fish should smell sweet: you should feel that you’re standing at the ocean’s edge. Any fishy or strong smell means the fish isn’t fresh. 19 When you have bought a fish and arrive home, you’d better store the fish in the refrigerator if you don’t cook it immediately, but fresh fish should be stored in your fridge for only a day or two. Frozen fish isn’t as tasty as the fresh one.‎ ‎ There are many common methods used to cook fish.   20   First, lean it and season it with your choice of spices(调料). Put the whole fish on a plate and steam it in a steam pot for 8 to 10 minutes if it weighs about one pound. (A larger one will take more time.) Then, it’s ready to serve.‎ A. Do not buy it. B. The easiest is to steam it. C. This is how you can do it. D. It just requires a little knowledge. E. The fish will go bad within hours. F. When buying fish, you should first smell it. G. The fats in fish are thought to help prevent heart disease.‎ ‎【答案】‎ ‎16. G ‎17. D ‎18. F ‎19. A ‎20. B ‎18. 根据前一句“Any fishy or strong smell means the fish isn’t fresh.” 根据“Put the whole fish on a plate and steam it in a steam pot”可知,本段介绍的是蒸鱼的方法,故选B。 ‎ The Science of Risk-Seeking ‎ Sometimes We decide that a little unnecessary danger is worth it because when we weigh the risk and the reward, the risk seems worth taking. 71 Some of us enjoy activities that would surprise and scare the rest of us. Why? Experts say it may have to do with how our brains work.‎ ‎ The reason why any of us take any risks at all might have to do with early humans. Risk-takers were better at hunting, fighting, or exploring. 72 As the quality of Risk-taking was passed from on ration to the next, humans ended up with a sense of adventure and a tolerance for risk.‎ ‎ So why aren’t we all jumping out of airplanes then? Well, even 200,000 years ago, too much ‎ risk-taking could get one Killed. A few daring survived, though, along with a few stay-in-the-cave types. As a result, humans developed a range of character types that still exists today. So maybe you love car racing, or maybe you hate it. 73 ‎ ‎ No matter where you are on the risk-seeking range, scientists say that your willingness to take risks increases during your teenage years. 74 To help you do that, your brain increases your hunger for new experiences. New experiences often mean taking some risks, so your brain raises your tolerance for risk as well.‎ Mean taking some risks, so your brain raisers your tolerance for risk as well.‎ ‎ 75 For the risk-seekers a part of the brain related to pleasure becomes active, while for the rest of us, a part of the brain related to fear becomes active.‎ ‎ As experts continue to study the science of risk-seeking, we’ll continue to hit the mountains, the waves or the shallow end of the pool.‎ A. It all depends on your character.‎ B. Those are the risks you should jump to take.‎ C. Being better at those things meant a greater chance of survival.‎ D. Thus, these well-equipped people survived because they were the fittest.‎ E. This is when you start to move away from your family and into the bigger world.‎ F. However, we are not all using the same reference standard to weigh risks and rewards.‎ G. New brain research suggests our brains work differently when we face a nervous situation.‎ ‎【答案】‎ ‎71. F72. C73. A74. E75. 根据“humans developed a range of character types...” E项中的when与“your willingness to take risks increases during your ‎ teenage years”中的teenage years对应,故选E。‎ ‎75. 根据“a part of the brain...while for the rest of us...” 如一些表示转折的连词,but,However,yet,though,nevertheless等,另外还有一些表示并列关系的连词如and,also,aswellas,neithernor,eitheror,notonly...butalso,ononehand....ontheotherhand等。 ‎ Both men and women are living longer these days in industrialized countries. 16 In general, they can expect to live six or seven years more than men. One reason for this is biological.‎ One important biological factor that helps women live longer is the difference in hormones between men and women. 17 Between the ages of about 12 and 50, women produce hormones that are involved in fertility(生育能力). These hormones also have a positive effect on the heart and blood flow. In fact, women are less likely to have high blood pressure or to die from heart attacks.‎ ‎18   ‎ They help the body defend itself against some kinds of infections. This means that women generally ger sick less often and less seriously than men. The common cold is a good example: women, on average, get fewer colds than men.19    Scientists are still not exactly sure how influence aging, but they believe that they do. Some think that a woman’s body cells have a tendency(向) to age more slowly than a man’s. Others think that a man’s body cells have a tendency to age more quickly. 20   A.However, women, on average, live longer. B .The biological factor plays an important part. C. Women are also helped by their female genes. D. The female hormones also protect the body in another way. E. Recent research seems to support both of these possibilities. F. Therefore, women are more healthy than men and can live a better life. G. Hormones are chemicals which are produced by the body to control carious body functions.‎ ‎【答案】16.A 17.G 18.D 19.C 20.E ‎【名师点睛】‎ 在做七选五时一定要注意空格前后句子的暗示词,可以准确确定空格上的选项。 Some think that a woman’s body cells have a tendency(向) to age more slowly than a man’s. Others think that a man’s body cells have a tendency to age more quickly. ‎ A. Get involved in student activities B. Your voice is actually super important C. There is a significant increase of opportunities D. Stay in active communication with your friends E. Get smart about the people who you spend your time with F. Your major does not matter as much in your first of college ‎ Five Things Nobody Told Me about College As I type this , I am in my university dorm room. A year ago, when I was awaiting to hear the results of my college applications, I often went to websites for some type of insider look on what college would be like. However, there’s only so much that prep books, websites, and older friends can teach. Here are the top 5things nobody told me about college:‎ ‎61 ‎ Nobody entering a university knows exactly what they want to study. If they tell you otherwise, they’re lying and will probably change what they want to purse within the first quarter of attendance . During my first quarter at University of California, Riverside (UCR),I thought that I wanted to study Political Science with its focus on International Affairs, so that’s what I applied for. However, once I worked with statewide and local government, I realized that a better fit for me would be Public Policy, and now I am in the process of changing my area.‎ ‎62 ‎ ‎ In college, there are so many good chances for you to meet your expectations. However, there is a very important difference between wanting to do something and applying for something. In order for you to take advantage of the conferences, research, internships ,and fellowships that your university offers, apply! Step into your academic advisor’s office, introduce yourself, and begin making the valuable connections that are necessary to help during the rest of your college career. Great things happen when you step out of your comfort zone, and you would be surprised on how many chances exist if you just ask.‎ ‎63 ‎ College is where you meet your birdesmaids, neighbors, and potential bosses. The relationships you develop now will probably be linked to the ones you value later, so be wise about ‎ the people who you invest yourself in . You are only one person, and you do not have time to waste on people who would rather cause drama or mess up with your purpose. Surround yourself with uplifting individuals who challenge you to be better while loving you for who you are, and be patient to the people who are the complete opposite of that description.‎ ‎64 ‎ As a first-year, I was afraid to make any noise towards campus issues that I noticed. It was not until I became involved in student government that I gained the confidence to handle projects that I created with the help of ASUCR Office of the President. During my first quarter, I spoke directly to the Chancellor, asking him for support towards my initiavives, met with the Vive Chancellors, and coorerated with my teaching assistances to begin my undergraduate research protect. Nothing good will happen when you are silent.‎ ‎65 ‎ At my high school, there were about only four active club and organizations that students could be a part of. Imagine my surprise when I stepped foot onto UCR’s campus, where over 400 organizations exist, ranging from political organizations to karate club. You are not paying all or your tuition(学费)to merely go to class, study, pass tests and graduate. Make something worthy out of your experience. Once this want is satisfied, a second level of wants appears: clothing and some sort of shelter. By the end of World War II these wants were satisfied for a great majority of Americans.  38 It included such items as automobiles and new houses.‎ By 1957 or 1958 this third level of wants was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s a fourth level of wants appeared: the “life-enriching” level. While the other levels involve physical satisfaction-the feeding, comfort, safety, and transportation of the human body-this level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services, many of which could be called “luxury” items. Among them are vacation trips, the best medical care, and entertainment.  39     ‎ On this level, a greater percentage of consumer spending goes to services, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of wants as their income increases, or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level?‎ ‎   A fifth level probably would involve wants that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime and prejudice.  40 In this way, we can enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.‎ A. Then a third level appeared.‎ B. Different people have different wants on each level.‎ C. There are several levels of wants in one’s life.‎ D. This is really interesting. I myself have a story in Brazil that people think is an overnight success. I come from a humble family, and two weeks before the deadline to apply to MIT, I started the application process. And, voila! I got in. People may think it's an overnight success, but that only worked because for the 17 years prior to that, I took life and education seriously. Your overnight success story is always a result of everything you've done in your life through that moment.‎ ‎62. ______‎ ‎ Constantly, people want to help out, right? All sorts of people: your family, your friends, your business partners, they all have opinions on which path you should take: "And let me tell you, go through this pipe." But whenever you go inside, there are other ways you have to pick as well. And you need to make those decisions yourself. No one else has the perfect answers for your life. And you need to keep picking those decisions, right? The pipes are infinite and you're going to bump your head, and it's a part of the process.‎ ‎63. ______‎ ‎ So when your life is going great, you have put together a great team, and you have growing revenue, and everything is set — time to settle. When I launched my first book, I worked really, really hard to distribute it everywhere in Brazil. With that, over three million people downloaded it, over 50,000 people bought physical copies. When I wrote a sequel, some impact was ‎ guaranteed. Even if I did little, sales would be okay. But okay is never okay. When you're growing towards a peak, you need to work harder than ever and find yourself another peak. Maybe if I did little, a couple hundred thousand people would read it, and that's great already. But if I work harder than ever, I can bring this number up to millions. That's why I decided, with my new book, to go to every single state of Brazil. And I can already see a higher peak. There's no time to settle down.‎ ‎64. ______‎ ‎ I constantly see people saying, "Yes, I had this great idea, but no investor had the vision to invest." "Oh, I created this great product, but the market is so bad, the sales didn't go well." Or, "I can't find good talent; my team is so below expectations." If you have dreams, it's your responsibility to make them happen. Yes, it may be hard to find talent. Yes, the market may be bad. But if no one invested in your idea, if no one bought your product, for sure, there is something there that is your fault. Definitely. You need to get your dreams and make them happen. And no one achieved their goals alone. But if you didn't make them happen, it's your fault and no one else's. Be responsible for your dreams.‎ ‎65. ______‎ Once I saw an ad, and it was a lot of friends, they were going up a mountain, it was a very high mountain, and it was a lot of work. You could see that they were sweating and this was tough. And they were going up, and they finally made it to the peak. Of course, they decided to celebrate, right? I'm going to celebrate, so, "Yes! We made it, we're at the top!" Two seconds later, one looks at the other and says, "Okay, let's go down." Life is never about the goals themselves. Life is about the journey. Yes, you should enjoy the goals themselves, but people think that you have dreams, and whenever you get to reaching one of those dreams, it's a magical place where happiness will be all around. But achieving a dream is a momentary sensation, and your life is not. The only way to really achieve all of your dreams is to fully enjoy every step of your journey. That's the best way.‎ ‎【答案】 ‎ ‎61.D ‎62.F ‎63.A ‎64.C ‎65.E ‎62.F考查对段落的理解。 No one else has the perfect answers for your life. 所以这里选F(相信有人会对你负责。) There's no time to settle down可知本段的意思是:努力就会达到更高峰,所以这里选A(认为成功在望就停滞不前。) But if you didn't make them happen, it's your fault and no one else's. Be responsible for your dreams. 所以这里选C(错误在别人。) The only way to really achieve all of your dreams is to fully enjoy every step of your journey. That's the best way. Learning another language is an exciting trip into a new world, and it can take some time and effort to get there. Even the best students feel the pressure. The first sign of a problem while preparing for an exam is worry. 36 If we can get rid of worries, or at least control them, then we’re in a much better position to do well on our tests. Take the following steps to survive exam stress and increase your overall performance as a result.‎ ‎ 37 What causes you anxiety when you are studying? Too much noise? Then move to a quieter place. Delayed work? Catch up with your studies a couple nights before. That way you can save the final night before the exam to review and get a good night of sleep.‎ The second way to deal with worry is to replace thoughts. Suppose you wake up at three in the morning and you’re worried about an exam. What do you do? 38 Doing something productive might allow you to sleep better when you finally do go back to bed.‎ Another way to replace negative thoughts is to do something physically active. Work out. Take a quick walk or a nice run. 39 For example, I might worry about the exam having surprise questions that I’m not prepared to answer. But I can put those thoughts aside by reminding myself that I’ve taken many exams and I’ve handled surprise questions before.‎ The third option is to treat the symptoms. Keep things in perspective. Think of one final exam that causes you the most anxiety. Now think of the worst thing that could happen. If you’ve prepared, then likely the worst grade you could get is a C. And, if you’ve been applying what we’ve been talking about, then you’ll likely do no worse than a B. 40 ‎ A. How bad is that really?‎ B. The first is to delete the causes.‎ C. Another idea is to think positive thoughts.‎ D. Worry robs us of energy, focus and motivation.‎ E. How about getting up and studying for an hour?‎ F. What we should do is to think positively and get rid of it.‎ G. We tell him to get home before dark, but he is often late, and then we wait, worry and sometimes get close to calling the police. And so what happens when he does come home? We have a big argument. Can you help us? ‎ Answer: Your son should, of course, come in before dark, not because you say so, but because it is his responsibility and because you would worry about him if he didn’t come home when he promised. 1________________ Just tell him that he has to be home on time if he wants to go out next time — and that this is his choice, not yours.‎ His disrespect is part of a bigger issue. Your son desires independence because the young always do when they hit puberty (青春期), somewhere between 13 and 16. New hormones (荷尔蒙), a new ability to think in abstractions and a new need to pull away from their parents all contribute to this desire. 2_________________ ‎ Your son may also be acting up because your discipline hasn’t kept up with his growth. A child hates to be corrected when his parents use the same words and same tone of voice they used when correcting him a year ago. 3___________ ‎ He won’t even argue with you too much, as long as you listen to his rants (咆哮) and consider his reasons when you have to say no. These are all signs that you know that your respect is as important to him as his respect is to you. 4__________ This doesn’t accomplish anything and is bound to worsen your relationship.‎ Your child not only needs your respect, he also needs you to encourage his dreams, no matter how strange they are. 5___________ Now is the time to lower your expectations, give as few orders as possible (but stick to the ones you give), pay more attention to your son’s good behavior than his bad, and give twice as many smiles as you get.‎ A. Memorizing lines takes practice and constant repetition. However, there are a few ways to make the memorization process run smoothly and quickly.‎ ‎ 36 ‎ For most performers, there is no quicker way of memorizing lines. To learn lines, an actor must ‎ recite the play loud over and over again. Most rehearsals (彩排) encourage this by running through the lines or having a “read through”. By the time opening night arrives, most actors have spoken their lines hundreds of times.‎ Listen to your cast members.‎ Sometimes inexperienced actors spend rehearsals looking at fellow performers, waiting patiently to say their next line. 37 This will help the actor learn his lines better because the context of the dialogue is absorbed.‎ ‎ 38 ‎ Because there is often not enough rehearsal time, many performers find ways to listen to the play’s dialogue during everyday activities. They use a tape recorder or an MP3 player to listen to the lines from each relevant scene (剧情). Some actors prefer to record the lines of all the characters, including their own. 39 Others like recording the lines of fellow cast members(参演人员), and they leave a blank space so that they can insert their dialogue while listening to the recording.‎ Think positively and don’t panic.‎ Most actors will experience stage fright before the opening night. Actors forget lines now and then. When it happens, however, most of the time the audience never notice. If you forget a line in the middle of your performance, don’t freeze. Stay in character. Keep the scene going to the best of your ability. If unfortunately you forget a line once, you will probably never forget that line ever again. 40 ‎ A. Record your lines.‎ B. Practice makes perfect.‎ C. Read lines loud and repeat them.‎ D. Read lines loud and remember them in a short time.‎ E. Sometimes embarrassment is the toughest method of memorization.‎ F. Then, they not only listen carefully, but they also speak all of the lines.‎ G. To learn lines, an actor must recite the play loud over and over again. 根据上文的句子“Sometimes inexperienced actors spend rehearsals looking at fellow performers, waiting patiently to say their next line. Instead, they should be listening carefully, responding in character at all times. 根据前面的内容“They use a tape recorder or an MP3 player to listen to the lines from each relevant scene (剧情). Some actors prefer to record the lines of all the characters, including their own. 和后面的内容“Others like recording the lines of fellow cast members (参演人员), and they leave a blank space so that they can insert their dialogue while listening to the recording. Then, they not only listen carefully, but they also speak all of the lines.(接下来他们不仅仔细听,而且听所有的台词。) 根据上文的句子“If unfortunately you forget a line once, you will probably never forget that line ever again. Sometimes embarrassment is the toughest method of memorization. If you can’t remember what you read or study, it will be a waste of time. 36 One useful aid that does help you remember what you study is to have a specific purpose or reason for reading.‎ Why does a clerk in a store go away when your reply to her offer to help is, “No, thank you. I’m just looking.”? Both you and she know that if you aren’t sure what you want, you are not likely to find it. But suppose you say instead, “Yes, thank you. I want a pair of sun glasses.” She says, “Right this way, please.” It’s quite the same with your studying. If you choose a book, “just looking” for nothing in particular, you are likely to get just that—nothing. 37 Your reasons will vary; they will include reading or studying “to find out more about”, “to understand the reasons for” and “to find out how”.‎ ‎ 38 Before you start to study, you say to yourself something like this, “I want to know why Stephen Vincent Benet happened to write about America”. But at the same time you express your own ideas to yourself as you react to what you read.
