My medical friends did their best to persuade me, saying that running away to sea would ruin my career. But after these years working as a junior, I was willing to take the risk.‎ Hungry for adventure, I boarded a ship in Singapore with 2,000 passengers and crew. To my relief, the hospital was well equipped, with an X-ray machine and a blood analyzer. That first voyage was a learning experience, a tight schedule full of safety drills. There was so much new information to take in. Even remembering which uniform to wear each day was a challenge. Most confusing, I often forgot to set my clock when the ship crossed time zones.‎ As a doctor, I was responsible for 600 crew, and I was on call for the entire ship. Far from treating seasickness and sunburn, I had to deal with other diseases, for my patients were wide and varied. The ship's medical center was actually a floating emergency room, and we didn't have a team of specialists on hand for a second opinion. With long and unpredictable hours, it required mental toughness.‎ As you can guess, many of the passengers were elderly, heart attacks don't care about geography and emergency evacuating(疏散)was difficult to arrange. I recall one such patient, who was taken off the ship halfway through the Panama Canal. After a terrifying ride in an old ambulance, I was relieved that the patient survived long enough to arrive at the hospital in Panama City.‎ Thankfully, there were several unexpected benefits to the job, I regularly enjoyed the passenger facilities and I even hosted my own table of passengers in the evenings. On rare days off, I volunteered as a tour guide on trips ashore. I got to fly over Alaska in a seaplane and watched a ballet in St. Petersburg.‎ Now, I understand being a ship doctor is not a job—it's a way of life. One year at sea became two. I lost my career ambitions, but I redefined happiness in my life.‎ ‎24. How did the writer feel working on the ship?‎ ‎ A. Regretful. B. Satisfied. C. Scared. D. Nervous.‎ ‎25. What was the writer's most difficult thing on the ship?‎ ‎ A.Wearing the same uniform each day. ‎ ‎ B.Absorbing plenty of new information.‎ ‎ C.Having a tight timetable full of safety drills.‎ ‎ D.Forgetting to adjust time by time zones.‎ ‎26. The patient taken off the ship halfway through the Panama Canal .‎ ‎ A.suffered from an unknown disease ‎ B.was taken to a safe place immediately ‎ C.got timely treatment in the hospital ‎ D.died on the way to the nearest hospital ‎27. Why did the writer lose his career ambitions later on?‎ ‎ A.He had a new understanding of happiness.‎ ‎ B.He could enjoy the passenger facilities.‎ ‎ C.He was content to be a tour guide on trips.‎ ‎ D.He gave up the dream of being a doctor.‎ C ‎“ New and improved. ” These words are put in so many marketing campaigns that we tend to accept them as linked. But many new drugs aren't an improvement over the best existing drug for a given condition, and the fast drug-approval processes in recent years have added to the uncertainty about their advantages.‎ A recent report in the British Medical Journal, "New Drugs: Where Did We Go Wrong and What Can We Do Better?”analysed the issue, The authors looked at 216 drugs approved between 2011 and 2017 ;152 were newly developed, and 64 were existing medicine approved for new uses. Only 25% offered a major advantage over the established treatment, and fully 58% had no confirmed added benefit to reduce symptoms or improve health-related quality of life.‎ ‎"This doesn’t mean there's no added benefit," lead author Wieseler said. “It just means we have no positive proof. Either we have no studies or have studies not good enough. ” Wieseler and her co-authors work for a German institute which evaluates new treatments and advises on whether the country's health care system should pay a premium ( 附加费)for them. Such organizations , known as health technology assessment ( HTA) agencies, work a little differently in the US, says Sean Tunis,a researcher in Baltimore: “ If payers think a new drug isn't better than an existing drug, these agencies will require that hospitals try the cheaper drug first. ”‎ Germany's HTA demands trials to prove that a new treatment beats the existing standard. This isn't always practical For one thing, such studies can be expensive and time-consuming, with no guarantee of success. Secondly, it can discourage companies from attempting to develop new alternatives. This is already happening. Drug developers are increasingly focused on areas where there are no good treatments to compete with, such as rare diseases.‎ This lack of meaningful data to guide patients is a major point of Wieseler's paper- With accelerated approval, there are more products approved, with a greater amount of uncertainty about risks and benefits. But there are other solutions besides drug trials. One idea is to require postmarket studies to track the effectiveness of newly approved drugs—a step too often neglected.‎ ‎28. What message does the recent report convey?‎ ‎ A. Many new drugs have no improved advantages.‎ ‎ B. The approval processes for new drugs are too fast.‎ ‎ C. Improved drugs have advantages over old ones.‎ ‎ D. Before 2017 no improvement was made to drugs.‎ ‎29. What will US HTA agencies do when no advantage is found in new drugs?‎ ‎ A. Remove government premium on them.‎ ‎ B. Get hospitals to use the cheaper drugs.‎ ‎ C. Arrange financial support for the patients.‎ ‎ D. Put new drugs on further trials and studies.‎ ‎30. What's the disadvantage of Germany's HTA trial demands?‎ ‎ A. Making drug companies think of illegal ways to cut cost.‎ ‎ B. Pushing companies to try alternatives for existing drugs.‎ ‎ C. Getting patients to depend on the government for support.‎ ‎ D. Holding companies back from improving existing drugs.‎ ‎31. What is the best title for the text?‎ ‎ A. The Advantage of Existing Drugs ‎ B. Misunderstanding of New and Old Drugs ‎ C. A Dilemma with New Drug Alternatives ‎ D. People Preference for New or Old Drugs D China’s war on garbage is as digital as the country itself. Think QR codes attached to trash bags that allow the government to trace exactly where its trash comes from.‎ On July 1, Shanghai began a compulsory garbage sorting program. Households and companies must classify their wastes into four categories and dump them in appointed places at certain times. The strict program became a headache for some residents. Not even the most environmentally conscious person can get all the answers right. Like, which bin does the newspaper you just used to pick up dog poop (粪便)belong to?‎ Gratefully, China’s tech startups are here to help. For instance, China’s biggest internet companies responded with new search features that help people identify what wastes are “wet”, “dry”, “toxic”, or “recyclable”. Simply pull up a mini app on WeChat, Baidu or Alipay and enter the keyword. The tech firms will give you the answer and why.‎ Alipay, Alibaba’s electronics payment company, claims its garbage sorting mini app added one million users under just three days. The mini app has so far indexed (编索引) more than 4,000 types of rubbish. Its database is still growing, and soon it will save people from typing by using image recognition to classify trash when they snap a photo of it. If people are too busy or lazy to hit the collection schedule, well, startups are offering trash service at the doorstep. A third-party developer helped Alipay build a recycling mini app and is now collecting garbage from 8,000 apartment complexes across 11 cities. To date, two million people have sold recyclable materials through its platform.‎ Besides helping households out, companies are also building software to make property managers, life easier. Some residential complexes in Shanghai began using QR codes to trace the origin of garbage. This way, regulators in the region know exactly which family has produced the trash and fine violators.‎ ‎32. What are some residents confused about?‎ ‎ A. Environmental knowledge. B. Bin for dog poop.‎ ‎ C. Some waste classification. D. Time for dumping.‎ ‎33. What is the advantage of trash service at the doorstep?‎ ‎ A. It provides time flexibility. B. It reduces household waste.‎ ‎ C. It saves people from typing. D. It classifies rubbish properly.‎ ‎34. Who will probably most welcome the use of QR codes?‎ ‎ A. Third-party developers. B. Company managers.‎ ‎ C Community administrators. D. Rubbish collectors.‎ ‎35. What is the main idea of this article?‎ ‎ A. People need recycling apps badly. B. People should classify their rubbish.‎ ‎ C. How regulators benefit from the tech. D. How China uses tech to sort waste.‎ 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为 多余选项。‎ If you were like most kids, your mother must have told you there were three no-no’s when it came to your fingers: Don’t put them in an electrical outlet, don’t stick them up your nose (at least not in public), and don’t use them when you are counting. ___36___ But experts in education and cognition now believe that using your fingers to do math is not only a perfectly good idea but may even help children become superior students.‎ It certainly makes sense. When children count on their fingers, they take an abstract concept — mathematics — and translate it into the most basic and visual form ___37___. Even when we aren’t actually counting on figures, they still can help us on math problems.‎ ‎___38___ It activates when we respond to heat, pressure, pain, or the use of a given finger.‎ Studying brain scans, researchers discovered that when students aged 8 to 13 work on subtraction (减法 ) equations, this region “lights up” on the scans, even if the students aren’t using their fingers. The more complex the problem is, the more activities are detected.‎ The connection between finger use and math ability has been proved on old-fashioned math tests as well. With their eyes closed, first graders were asked to identify which of their fingers a researcher was touching. ___39___. When college students were given the same quiz, the highest scores once again performed best on calculation tests.‎ So what does all this mean? For one thing, parents and teachers shouldn’t discourage children from counting on their fingers. ___40___. Memorizing the multiplication tables may help, but it is not the best option. “I would like to see interesting and creative representations of ideas.” says Jo Boaler, a professor of math education.‎ Recently, a series of activities have been designed to strengthen students’ perception of their fingers. Maybe in the near future, there will be only two no-no’s regarding the use of fingers.‎ ‎ A. There is a section of the brain, called the somatosensory(躯体感觉的) finger area.‎ ‎ B. Researchers also stress that students simply learn better using visual tools.‎ ‎ C. The first two laws of fingers are as true as ever.‎ ‎ D. That may sound simplistic, but the researchers offer an interesting explanation.‎ ‎ E. Researchers found those scoring highest on the finger-ID questions scored higher on a math test.‎ ‎ F. Researchers are unimpressed by those students who finish quickly as well.‎ ‎ G. In fact, experts believe the brain is built to “see” any process with our fingers.‎ 第三部分 英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分)‎ 第一节 完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,造出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑。‎ Peter Tabichi is a science teacher who donates 80 percent of his teaching salary __41__ local community projects. The ____52___ also won an awards from the Royal Society of Chemistry. These feats are even more ____53___ when you consider that the school only has one computer, with intermittent Internet access.‎ For many of these children, Tabichi’s efforts have been life-changing. They were sometimes ____54___to get enough food at home before attending their classes. And they grow up in a community with drug, ___55___, teen pregnancies, and youth suicide.‎ For Tabichi, the ___56___ of his work are self-evident. “When my learners become resilient, creative and productive in the society, I get a lot of___57___ for I act as their greatest destiny enabler,” he says.‎ Winning the award, which was ___58____ during a ceremony hosted___59___ Hugh Jackman in Dubai, Tabichi said his experiences showed him that “Africa will produce scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs whose names will be one day famous in every ___60___ of the world.”‎ ‎41. My classmates and I made up our minds do something. Someone suggested make a video to record our experiences at school and we agreed. Material collecting took us a whole week, during it we interviewed our teachers and took picture of every aspect of school life. The editing part after that was tough. We debated over what to put them into the video. Some disagreements were unavoidable, and the video turned out perfect. Several days later, when the video was played on a graduation ceremony, it was very popular for everyone. What a wonderfully time the students and teachers shared! That surely gives us a great sense of achievement.‎ 第二节 书面表达(满分25分)‎ 假设你是李华,最近你获悉:为了让世界更好地了解中国,你市将举行”中国好故事--我眼中的中国”演讲比赛。请根据以下要点提示,给你的留学生好朋友John写一封邮件,鼓励他参加。内容包括:1.活动宗旨; 2.比赛时间、报名方式;‎ ‎3.适当建议。‎ 注意:‎ ‎1.词数100左右;‎ ‎2.可以适当增加细节,以使行文连贯。‎ 参考词汇:中国好故事--我眼中的中国:Chinese Story--China in my eye Dear John,‎ ‎_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________‎ Yours,‎ Li Hua 英语周练十五答案及解析 听力 1 -20 ACABA CBCAC ACBBC BACBB 阅读理解:21-23 CAD 24-27 BDCA 28-31 ABDC 32-35 CACD 36-40 CGAEB 完形填空:41—45 ABCDD 46—50 BCDCA 51—55 BBCAD 56—60 CDBAA 语法填空: ‎ ‎61. arose 62. earliest 63. to record 64. to 65. B. 推理判断题。考察作者的观点态度。根据第一段的But these years working as a junior, I was willing to take the risk.可知,作者认为在船上工作是满意的,不后悔的。‎ ‎25. D. 细节理解题。根据第二段Even remembering which uniform to wear each day was a challenge. Most confusing, I often forgot to set my clock when the ship crossed time zones.可知,最难的就是跨时区时忘记调整时差,所以选D.‎ ‎26.C。细节理解题。根据第四段After a terrifying ride in an old ambulance, I was relieved that the patient survived long enough to arrive at the hospital in Panama City. 可知,病人得到及时救治。‎ ‎27. A. 推理判断题。根据最后一段Now, I understand being a ship doctor is not a job-it’s a way of life.和I lost my career ambitions, but I redefined happiness in my life. 根据文章第二段中“the authors looked at 216 drugs approved between 2011 and 2017 ; 152 were newly developed, and 64 were existing medicine approved for new uses. Only 25% offered a major advantage over the established treatment, and fully 58% had no confirmed added benefit to reduce symptoms or improve health-related quality of life.”可知,英国《医学期刊》的一篇报道对2011到2017年上市的药品的研究发现,其中58%的新药与已有的药物相比,没有任何得到证实的新增加的药效。故最近的报告传达了许多新药没有改进的优势的信息。结合选项,故选A。‎ ‎29.B细节理解题。根据文章第三段中“Such organizations , known as health technology assessment ( HTA) agencies, work a little differently in the US, says Sean Tunis,a researcher in Baltimore: “ If payers think a new drug isn't better than an existing drug, these agencies will require .that hospitals try the cheaper drug first. ”可知,美国的卫生技术评估机构的功能与德国不同,如果付费方(病人)认为某种新药不比已有的药品更好,那么“他们(评估机构)就会要求医院先试用便宜一些的药品",故选B。‎ ‎30. D推理判断题。根据文章倒数第二段中“Germany's HTA demands trials to prove that a new treatment beats the existing standard. This isn't always practical For one thing, such studies can be expensive and time-consuming, with no guarantee of success. Secondly, it can discourage companies from attempting to develop new alternatives. This is already happening. Drug developers are increasingly focused on areas where there are no good treatments to compete with,‎ ‎ such as rare diseases”(德国的HTA需要试验来证明新的治疗方法优于现有标准。 A Dilemma with New Drug Alternatives“新药物的两难选择”作为标题,符合题意。 The strict program became a headache for some residents. Not even the most environmentally conscious person can get all the answers right. If people are too busy or lazy to hit the collection schedule, well, startups are offering trash service at the doorstep. A。‎ ‎34. First of all, the report about the government plans on developments around the village of Tartlesbury was published this morning. The new motorway will pass along the north side of the village. It will cross the River Teeme from the well-known beauty spot, Streeve Beach, to the north-east of the village. The motorway will cut the village off from the Streeve Beach, where many children play. But that is not the end of it. There are also plans to build a thousand houses on farmland west of the village. And on top of that is the plan to build a high-tech park for new technology companies. It will be built in the south of the village, where the old steel factory used to be. A new center with a swimming pool and a large supermarket are also planned next to the park. And, as has been expected, the plans have created quite a lot of interest. Not all people are for them. Mr. Khan, a local shopkeeper said, “Most of us in the village are absolutely concerned about what is being ‎ planned here. This is just a chance for some people to make money quickly. Of course, we welcome the jobs that the new technology park will bring, but we feel more worried that the large increase in housing and the planned motorway will destroy the character of the area.” I think this is a debate that is going to run on for quite some time and we here on Local News will keep you informed.‎
