First of all, mistakes are a clear sign that we are trying new things. It’s always good to try new things because when we are trying new things, we are growing. If we never try anything new, how can we improve? The simple answer is, “We can’t”. Another good thing about mistakes is that when we are making them, we are learning. Consider this – Edison failed 10,000 times before he perfected the light bulb. When asked how it felt to fail that many times, he said that he had learned 10,000 things that didn’t work. When we make a mistake, we are much closer to success. Because every time we make a mistake, we eliminate one of the things that keep us from success. But all this doesn’t mean that we should go through life without considering the consequences of a mistake. Instead, when we try something new, we have to be willing to set some reasonable limits so that in the event that it doesn’t work out the way we want it to, we will be in a position to try again. We all have limited resources– in the form of time and money – so we shouldn’t blow them all on one approach to a problem. It’s best that we realize it probably won’t be perfect the first time and allocate (分配) these resources appropriately so we can learn, make corrections, and try again. Only by accepting and using our mistakes in this way can we make significant advances in our lives. There is an old saying that goes, “If you’re not making mistakes, you’re not trying hard enough.” So go forth and make mistakes. 21. From the second paragraph, we can conclude that ______. A. mistakes are unnecessary for development B. mistakes let us see our own limits C. it’s common for people to make mistakes D. making mistakes is better than not trying 22. According to the article, one thing we should pay attention to about making mistakes is _______. A. reflecting on the consequences after each mistake B. accepting the outcome willingly C. making proper arrangements for our next try D. avoiding making the same mistakes 23. The article is mainly about ______. A. how to deal with mistakes B. what benefits making mistakes bring C. how to achieve success D. how to make use of our mistakes B In recent years, China has witnessed the growth of luxury (奢侈品) brands. In this market, Chinese consumers are now the largest spenders. It’s clear that a new generation of young, materialistic people is increasingly relying on luxury brands to improve its self-image (自我形象). I am a fashionista too, at least in spirit - I love to look at clothes and shoes. But I don’t understand why people spend lots of money on designer labels. When a young woman buys a handbag that costs two months of her salary, that’s a scary thing What’s interesting is that scientists have found that having luxury things doesn’t lead to happiness. Study after study has shown that although we want material things, when we get them we don’t suddenly become “happy” people. In fact, a series of studies by Leaf Van Boven at the University of Colorado, US, has shown that individuals who spend money on travel and similar experiences get more pleasure than those who invest it in material things. That’s because experiences are more easily integrated into a person’s identity. If I travel to Yunnan, that adventure affects how I think in the future. My memories become a part of me. Moreover, as Van Boven has observed, young people who pursue happiness through “things” are liked less by their peers. People prefer those who pursue happiness through experiences. It’s natural to want to express yourself through your appearance. So my advice is: create a look that isn’t tied to a designer label. Convey your own message. Take some lessons from the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. He was always in Levis jeans and a black turtleneck. Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, routinely appears in hoodies and sneakers. These people, successful people, have style. You don’t have to break the bank to send a message about who you are. Take a trip. Go out into the world. Then come back and confidently create your own signature look. By Susan Chyn 24. What can we infer from the first three paragraphs? A. The author enjoys buying luxury brands herself. B. The author sees no point in spending money on material things. C. The author is critical of youths tying their looks to designer labels. D. The author finds it natural for fashionists to follow fashion trends. 25. Leaf Van Boven’s studies showed that ______. A. traveling changes a person’s identity greatly B. people dislike those who love luxuries C. experiences can bring people more happiness than luxuries D. luxuries have a negative effect on people’s happiness 26. What is the author’s advice on expressing oneself? A. Be selective about designer labels. B. Create your own personal, unique style. C. Choose styles that are simple and comfortable. D. Try styles like Mark Zuckerberg’s. 27. The main purpose of the article is to ______. A. persuade readers to invest in experiences instead of luxuries B. prove how luxury leads to an unpleasant life C. tell how to express yourself through appearances D. report on a series of studies about luxuries and happiness C When receiving a pair of adult homing pigeons, the new owner cannot set them free as they will return to their original home loft(鸽房). If birds are received as babies, they must be kept in the loft for a period of time until they are oriented(以……为方向) with their new home. After about two to three months the loft doors can be opened. Never force the young birds out of the loft as they frighten easily. They will connect this bad experience with their home loft and this is something that the owner does not want the birds to experience. Unless the birds are simply being raised for enjoyment and the owner likes seeing them fly around the immediate area and return, the next step is unnecessary. If the birds are being raised for racing purposes or the owner is interested in testing their homing ability, then he or she will do the following. Gently place the young birds in a cage and then drive down the road a few miles from home. The best time of day is before 9AM and not when there is rain, fog or high wind as these conditions will affect the bird’s ability to return home. Set the birds free somewhere not close to a heavily wooded area, then drive home. Do this daily for about fifty days, and then take one day off with no training. Increase the distance each week gradually by a few miles until the birds reach a distance of about fifty miles. Most of the birds will return home but expect some unexpected deaths if there are game hunters in the area. You can time the birds by keeping track of how long it takes them to return home. In some European countries such as England, it is a regular pastime and clubs have developed around the spot with specially designed cages on wheels that are attached to vehicles to transport groups of birds. 28. Why shouldn’t a new owner set adult homing pigeons free? A. They will fly away. B. They are frightened. C. They cannot live alone. D. They cannot find their home. 29. What does “this bad experience” refer to in Paragraph 2 ? A. The owner leaving home B. The owner frightening the birds C. The birds being kept in the loft. D. The birds being hurt by the owner. 30. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about ? A. What pigeons can be used for. B. Where pigeons should be trained. C. How pigeons get their homing ability. D. How to train pigeons to find their home. 31. In which part of a magazine might we find this text ? A. Arts. B. News. C.Travel. D. Nature. D When was the last time someone unexpectedly did something nice for you? Not someone you knew, but a total stranger? It's happened to me a few times, but two instances really stand out. A few years ago, I was dining in a restaurant with a friend who kept talking about himself, completely not aware of the fact that I was sitting there in misery. It wasn't my friend's talks that made me suffer. I was recovering from a broken heart, and just sitting down to dinner reminded me of my last relationship. I could have burst into tears right there at the table. When we picked up the check, the waitress said, “Your meal was already paid for.” My friend and I didn't have a clue how it happened. Then I remembered a man I saw out of the corner of my eye. He was dressed in mostly white, sat down at the bar, had a beer, and stayed for maybe ten minutes. The waitress said, “Yes, the gentleman in white paid for you.” It felt like an angel was saying, “I see you, honey. It's going to be okay.” Just last year, I was running a halfmarathon. With just 1 mile to go, I was out of gas. Runners call it “hitting_the_wall”. I thought I couldn't move another inch. Out of nowhere, a stranger came up to me and said, “What's your name, sweetie? Jennifer? Okay, Jennifer, let's go! Come on! It's just around the corner! You can do it!” And he ran with me until I picked up my pace. I found him at the finish line to thank him for the encouragement only to learn he wasn't even supposed to be in the race that day. I still shake my head when I think of these momentary angels that came to me at my point of need. Do you have any experiences like these? 32.Which of the following is the best title for the passage ? A.The kindness of strangers B.Valuable friendship C.Two special experiences D.Helping others is worthwhile 33.According to the passage, the man in white ________. A.was the author's friend B.had a big meal in the restaurant C.was generous and kindhearted D.enjoyed making fun of others 34.The underlined expression in the passage means “________”. A.being hurt by the wall B.winning the game C.taking a deep breath D.running out of energy 35.A stranger helped the author during a halfmarathon by ________. A.giving her a bottle of water B.accompanying and encouraging her C.showing her the right way D.keeping her cool and awake 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 Study Links Video Game Use to Problems in school A new study warns that too much time spent playing computer games could affect a child’s performance at school. 36 They show that too many hours spent playing games can reduce students’ chances of success in school. More than 600 teenagers between the ages of 14 and 16 took part in the research project. 37 It is said to be the first ever long-term study in Northern Ireland on the influence of information technology on school test results. The study found that teenagers who played computer games less than once a week were more successful in school than those who played them twice a day or more. 41% of the students who used gaming devices two or more times a day received passing grades on school exams. 38 The study found that social media use did not affect school performance. Caline McStravick is the director of the National Children’s Bureau Northern Ireland. She says the study showed no connection between social media and test results. “ 39 I think that’s more because social media is part of every child’s life. It’ s the way they communicate. It’s the way they keep in touch with their friends.” Many parents say their children are becoming increasingly dependent on computer games. Some have compared gaming to a drug addiction. 40 It suggested that computer games can cause children to stay awake late at night. Less sleep makes children tired and unable to pay attention in school the next day. A. It was clear that social media didn’t have any effect. B. That compared with 77% of those who rarely played the games. C. However, the study did not explore addiction D. Britain’s National Children’s Bureau Northern Ireland reported the results of the study. E. The new games are much different from older ones. F. Drug addiction does great harm to their health and performance at school. G. It took place over a period of three years from 2013 to 2015. Personally I think trains are exciting and romantic. I must 41 that trains are not important means of transportation in the US, but I do have some 42 with them. When I was a child, growing up in a small town with very little 43 , we used to go to the station to watch the passenger trains coming in. There was something 44 about the steaming, roaring string of cars coming into view around the mountains, 45 growing larger and louder and finally 46 crowds of strangers onto the platform. I took my 47 train trip when I was ten years old. I went with my elder sister to visit our cousins six hundred miles away. The train—so loud and violent on the outside—was 48 and rocking inside. We were very excited, and as that was also our first time away from our parents, we felt somewhat frightened too. However, because I had 49 so much, I was a little disappointed when I was finally one of the passengers I had 50 for so long. As a college student, I 51 ride overnight train to my roommate’s hometown. We could never afford a 52 , so we played cards, sang, ate, read and talked 53 we finally fell uncomfortably asleep in the straight-backed seats. My idea that trains are 54 may come from the fact that my husband and I took the train on our honeymoon, spending extra money to eat in the dinning car, and 55 the window as the desert scenery slid past. Now, when I make a trip, I always fly or drive, and 56 are not a very important part of my life. 57 , every time I hear the train whistle faraway on a quiet night, I can always feel the sudden 58 in my heart to pack my bags and jump on board, entering a 59 world of motions, sounds, sights and experience which just aren’t 60 in the dull environment of an airplane. 41.
