Sixteen years ago I learned a lesson. I got in a taxi, and we took off for Grand Central Station. We were driving in the right lane when all of a sudden, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver used his brakes, the tires made a loud noise, and at the very last moment our car stopped just 3cm from the back of the other car. I couldn’t believe it. But then I couldn’t believe what happened next. The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big accident, turned his head around and he started shouting at us. I couldn’t believe it! My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. So, I said, “Why did you just do that? This guy could have killed us!” And this is when my taxi driver told me what I now call, “The Law of the Garbage Truck”. He said, “Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of anger and disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they look for a place to dump it. And if you let them, they’ll dump it on you.” So I started thinking how often I let Garbage Trucks run right over me and how often I take their garbage and spread it to other people. I began to see Garbage Trucks. I see the load people are carrying. I see them coming to dump it. And like my taxi driver, I don’t take it personally. I just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. 21. What happened to the author on his way to Grand Central Station? A. He was caught in a traffic jam. B. His taxi almost ran into another car. C. He had a fight with his taxi driver. D. His taxi suddenly got a flat tire. 22. When the author saw his taxi driver smile and wave at the driver of the black car, he______. A. got very angry B. was deeply impressed C. felt quite disappointed D. praised him for his manners 23. The underlined part “the load” in the last paragraph probably refers to _______. A. the bad mood B. poor habits C. waste materials D. great pressure 24. How did the author learn to deal with Garbage Trucks? A. Fight back immediately. B. Call the police for help. C. Dump it on someone else. D. Smile and move on. B “I didn't hear them call my name,” explained Shelley Hennig to Active Teens (AT) as she talked about that exciting moment on national television when she won the honor of Miss Teen USA 2004. “Are you ready?” is what she heard. Then she said, “I shook my head no, and then they said ‘yes’ and it was announced again.” It was four days after that life changing moment for the seventeen-year-old high school student from Destrehan, Louisiana — she was still on cloud nine. “I was so shocked! I never believed that it could actually really happen.” Present in the audience(观众)that day were: her mother and father, elder brother, her friends, and her dance teacher. Understanding why members of her family and her friends would be there, AT asked why her dance teacher had traveled so far to see her compete(比赛). “She’s always been my role model.I’ve danced with her since I was six. She’s been through so many difficulties and came through them all. I’ve learned to get over bad life’s experiences and learned how to move on because of her.” One of those bad life’s experiences for Shelley happened three years ago when her brother Brad was killed in a drunk driving accident. He was 18. She found writing helped her get through the rough days. She said, “I write a lot about my brother. I write a lot, a lot, a lot...” As Miss Louisiana Teen, she traveled around the state speaking to teens(青少年)about the dangers of drinking and driving. In her role as Miss Teen USA, Shelley will continue to speak to youth about safe driving, in addition to many other things to help the youth. When AT asked Miss Teen USA if she had any advice for our readers, she said, “Don’t let anyone change you. Hang out with people that make you feel good about yourself. That way, it is easy to be yourself.” 25. What does the words “on cloud nine” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A. frightened B. troubled C. very happy D. very angry 26. Shelley takes her dance teacher as a role model mainly because she is ______. A. determined B. friendly C. strict D. experienced 27. How many children did the Hennigs have according to the text? A. 1 B. 2 C. 3 D. 4 28. What did Shelley often do after she became Miss Louisiana Teen? A. She visited drunken drivers. B. She gave dance performances. C. She helped other teens with their studies. D. She made speeches on safe driving. C Rob Kalin learned the secret to success while he was young. As a young child, he liked playing with a stuffed rabbit his mother had made. "At that time, we knew he would become a craftsman (工匠) in the future," Kalin’s mother said. Kalin’s father was a carpenter (木匠) and taught him early on how to use his hands. In high school, Kalin was so interested in photography that he cut classes to take photos 18 hours a day. Eventually, Kalin ended up at New York University, studying classics and working as a carpenter. One night, his landlord asked him to build a website for his restaurant. "I didn’t know anything about websites, but I built the basic site by looking through books in four weeks," Kalin recalls. After working on a crafts site that provided "advice and a lot of hand-holding", Kalin recognized that there was no market for their goods. He wrote a fan letter to Stewart Butterfield, the founder of Flickr, who had sold his highly popular photo-sharing website to Yahoo! Impressed by Kalin’s letter, he took a look at Kalin’s idea and invited him to San Francisco for a month in 2006. He taught Kalin how to build a website, and helped him borrow $615,000 from a bank. With the help of Stewart, Kalin was able to create etsy.com, an online crafts fair that may be the largest market for handmade goods in the world. Last year, 350,000 woodworkers, and other craftsmen sold their one-of-a-kind goods on the four-year-old site. It sells everything from hand-knitted T-shirts to wooden electric guitars. In an age of chain stores and malls, it seems there’s still a big market for the unique: custom-made (订制的) skirts and hand-painted tea sets. Today, Etsy’s staff has increased to 70 employees, and more than three million consumers in 150 countries are buying goods on Etsy every year. 29. It can be learned from the text that Rob Kalin _______. A. opened a restaurant after graduation B. admired Stewart Butterfield very much C. was good at building websites at college D. offered good advice to craftsmen 30. Which of the following can best describe Rob Kalin? A. Enthusiastic and creative. B. Patient and changeable. C. Smart and humorous. D. Strict and intelligent. 31. What can we learn about Etsy according to the text? A. It offered crafts advice at first and then began to sell crafts. B. It sells custom-made clothes and other handmade things. C. It has employed 350,000 craftsmen. D. It was established by Stewart Butterfield and Kalin. 32. Which is the correct order of the following events? a. Kalin was admitted into New York University. b. Stewart helped Kalin get enough money to create etsy.com. c. Kalin spent 18 hours taking photographs every day. d. Kalin worked on a site providing craftsmen with advice. e. Kalin rented a room from a restaurant owner. A. a b d e c B. a d c b e C. c b a d e D. c a e d b D Fear plays no part in this latest problem. “I’m not afraid I’ll lose my children. I won’t lose my children. We live together, and nothing, nothing,” she repeats, her voice rising when speaking to John’s lawyer, “will stop me from being with my children. A law? Year, right. Don’t disturb me when it comes to my children. You are never going to win. If John wants to see them, I cannot stop him. He’s their father—I want them to see him! However, his visit in his present condition will disturb the children’s stable (稳定的) life.” John, who has spent much of his time in California recently, has only hired a house for himself in Pennsylvania, according to his lawyer. “If he’d like to stick to a regular life, I’d be more than happy to do that,” Jane says. “The best thing for any child of a divorced (离婚的) parent is a stable life. I want nothing more than for him to set up a stable life for himself, so that he can be part of making our children’s lives more stable.” While matters of money and care won’t be settled for weeks, Jane hardly puts her life on hold. Last week the ABC network announced that Jane would return with her own show, Twist of Jane, in which she gives advice to other moms. Jane and her eight children will also return to ABC in a series of Jane Plus 8 specials showing them on various adventures. It’s a rest for Jane, who insists that she needs her new, busy life to provide for her family. “I have to lead such a life, and I’m thankful that I’ve built it to the top where now I can support my children.” she says. And whether a bellicose(好斗的)dance judge or a bellicose former wife, Jane plans to keep on facing attacks on her. “Some people try to knock me down—only to make me more fierce, more protective, more determined to do better,” she says. “Go ahead, take me on. (Text 10) The car was invented just a century ago. You may know all kinds of car names, but many people don't know who was inventor of the first car. The first car was invented not by a German, but by an American. His name was Henry Ford. Henry was born in a poor family' He was the eldest of six children. When he was a boy, he became interested in mending watches and machines. When he was 12, his mother died. Soon he had to work in a machine shop for two dollars and fifty cents a week. The hard life made him strong and able. At that time there was another interest in the life of the young Ford. He dreamed to make a machine that could run without a horse. So it was named "a horseless carriage". He overcame a lot of difficulties and in April, 1893, the "horseless carriage" was finally finished, which was the first car. Later Henry Ford founded the Ford Motor Company. He was really the first inventor of the car in the world.查看更多
