He was severely disabled and very short, and when we would walk together, his hand on my arm for balance, people would stare. If he ever noticed or was bothered, he never let on. It was difficult to coordinate(协调)our steps—his slow, mine impatient—and because of that, we didn’t say much as we went along. But as we started out, he always said, “You set the pace. I will try to adjust to you.” He never talked about himself as an object of sympathy, nor did he show any envy of the more fortunate or able. What he looked for in others was a “good heart”, and if he found one, the owner was good enough for him. I believe that is a proper standard by which to judge people, even though I still don’t know accurately what a “good heart” is. Unable to join in many activities, my father still tried to participate in some way. I now know he participated in some things indirectly through me, his only son. When I played ball (poorly), he “played” too. When I joined the Navy, he “joined” too. And when I came home on leave, he saw to it that I visited his office. Introducing me, he was really saying, “This is my son, but it is also me, and I could have done this, too, if things had been different.” Those words were never said aloud. He has been gone many years now, but I think of him often. I wonder if he sensed my unwillingness to be seen with him during our walks. If he did, I am sorry I never told him how sorry I was, how unworthy I was, how I regretted it. I think of him when I complain about small affairs, when I am envious of another’s good fortune, when I don’t have a “good heart”. At such times I put my hand on his arm to regain my balance, and say, “You set the pace. I will try to adjust to you.” 21. The author felt unhappy walking with his father because ________. A. he felt sympathy for his father’s physical disability B. he didn’t want others to know he had an ugly father C. it was hard for them to walk at the same pace D. it was not easy for his father to keep balance 22. According to the last paragraph, by saying “You set the pace. I will adjust to you.” the author means that ________. A. he is now glad to help his father to walk B. he regrets his unwillingness to walk with his father C. he will follow his father’s standards of being a good man D. he will never forget how mentally strong his father was 23. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage? A. A Story Between Father and Son B. An Adjustment to Father C. A Smart Head D. A Good Heart B Teens don’t understand the big fuss (小题大做). As the first generation to grow up in a wired world, they hardly know a time when computers weren’t around, and they eagerly catch the chance to spend hours online, chatting with friends. So what? But researchers nationwide are increasingly worried that teens are becoming isolated (孤寂), less skillful at person-to-person relationships, and perhaps numb (麻木) to the cheatings that are so much a part of the e-mail world. “And a teen’s sense of self and values may be changed in a world where personal connections can be limitless,” said Sherry Turkle. Another researcher, Robert Kraut, said he’s worried about the “opportunity costs” (机会成本) of so much online time for youths. He found that teens who used computers, even just a few hours a week, showed increased signs of loneliness and social isolation. “Chatting online may be better than watching television, but it’s worse than hanging out with real friends,” he said. Today’s teens, however, don’t see anything strange in the fact that the computer takes up a central place in their social lives. “School is busy and full of pressure. There’s almost no time to just hang out,” said Parker Rice, 17. “Talking online is just catch-up time.” Teens say they feel good about what they say online or taking the time to think about a reply. Some teens admit that asking someone for a date, or breaking up, can be easier in message form, though they don’t want to do so. But they insist there’s no harm. 24. The researchers in the passage argue that . A. they are worried teens spend too much time on chatting online. B. teens may develop a different sense of value by overusing computers. C. teens can manage their social connections on their own. D. spending hours online does good to teens 25. The text mainly deals with . A. teens’ pleasant online experiences B. teen’s computer skills and school work C. different opinions on teen’s chatting online D. the effects of the computer world on teens 26. Parker Rice thinks that talking online can help him to . A. use computers properly B. improve their school work C. develop an interest in social skills D. reduce their mental pressures 27. The purpose of the text is to . A. draw attention to teens’ computer time. B. describe some computer research results C. suggest some solutions to get teens away from online chatting D. discuss some problems teens have at school C A Book Review—The Snake-Stone by Berlie Doherty The setting: Urban England (the cities), but also rural England (the countryside) including remote English villages. The theme: The main theme is a teenage research of self-discovery, in this case the search for a mother from whom the hero was separated at an early age. Its other concerns are love, getting on with others, being persistent and courageous and trying to deal with doubts, troubles and worries. As the book moves to a close, James’ swimming coach says to him: “You are not like a kid obeying instructions any more. You are diving like a young man who knows where he is going.” The characters: James is the hero of the story. He is a championship diver, and has a comfortable life with his foster parents (养父母). Yet he also has the qualities to take him on a long journey to find his birth mother. The other characters in The Snake-Stone, James’ parents, his diving instructor, best friend, the villagers, people he meets on his journey, are pictured realistically. The turning point: The turning point in the story comes while James’ foster parents are away in London, and he wonders about the identity of his birth mother. The only clue he has is a fossil, “the snake stone” which she left behind along with a note on which she had written: “Take good care of Sammie.” It was written on a torn envelope with parts of an address still there. The journey: Instead of going to London, James decides to find his birth mother. With help from his geography teacher, James sets out for the remote country village where his mother might be found. James has painful, challenging, but also humorous and happy travels. The mother he finally meets, Anne, has a minor yet powerful voice in the novel. He comes to understand why she left him at a stranger’s door fifteen years before. Although the meeting is not long, it leaves him with a feeling of completeness. As a journey of self-discovery, The Snake-Stone also provides its readers with a happy ending. Its hero says, on returning to his foster parents, “I was home.” 28. What is the main theme of the novel? A. A painful life with foster parents. B. A challenging life in the world of diving. C. A travel around the country. D. A journey of self-discovery. 29. What do the underlined coach’s words in Paragraph 2 suggest? A. James is a successful diver. B. James is a hopeful swimmer. C. James is an independent young man D. James is an outgoing young man. 30. The snake stone in the novel is . A. a gift from the swimming coach B. a fossil together with an address C. a stone found by the birth mother D. a fossil left by the foster parents 31. Which of the following is true about the novel? A. The purpose of his journey is to find his birth mother. B. The story takes place in the city of London only. C. The story has a sad ending. D. The turning point comes after the hero meets his birth mother. D “A photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically with a smart phone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website” is the definition of “selfies” in the Oxford English Dictionary. In fact, it wasn't even in the dictionary until August of last year. It earned its place there because people are now so obsessed with selfies ─ we take them when we try on a new hat, play with our pets or when we meet a friend whom we haven't seen in a while. But is there any scientific explanation for this obsession? Well, you should probably ask James Kilner, a neuroscientist(神经系统科学家) at University College London. Through our lifetime we become experts at recognizing and interpreting other people's faces and facial expressions. In contrast, according to Kilner, we have a very poor understanding of our own faces since we have little experience of looking at them ─ we just feel them most of the time. This has been proved in previous studies, according to the BBC. Kilner found that most people chose the more attractive picture. This suggests that we tend to think of ourselves as better-looking than we actually are. To further test how we actually perceive our own faces, Kilner carried out another study. He showed people different versions of their own portrait ─ the original, one that had been edited to look less attractive and one that was made more attractive ─ and asked them to pick the version which they thought looked most like them. They chose the more attractive version. But what does it say about selfies? Well, isn't that obvious? Selfies give us the power to create a photograph ─ by taking it from various angles, with different poses, using filters (滤色镜) and so on ─ that better matches our expectations with our actual faces. “You suddenly have control in a way that you don't have in non-virtual(非虚拟的) interactions," Kilner told the Canada-based CTV News. Selfies allow you “to keep taking pictures until you manage to take one you're happy with”, he explained. 32.What is the passage mainly about? A. The definition and fun of taking selfies. B. A study of why people love taking selfies. C. How taking selfies influences people’s daily lives. D. How to interpret people’s facial expressions in their selfies. 33. The underlined word “perceive” in Paragraph 5 can be replaced by “______”. A. understand B. choose D. explain D. beautify 34. What did Kilner discover from his researches? A. People tend to believe they look more attractive than they actually are. B. People tend to spend more time looking at their faces than at others’. C. People interpret others’ facial expressions worse than their own. D. People who like taking selfies know more about their facial expressions. 35. According to Kilner, people like taking selfies probably because they think __________. A. it is a good chance to learn more about their actual faces B. it allows them to satisfy their expectations with their appearances C. it enables them to interact with their friends in social media D. it is a way to respond to others’ facial expressions correctly 第二节 (共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 Create Happiness Yourself Have you ever thought of the real meaning of being happy?
