He always scored badly in tests and saw no hope for the future. That was until he met Sarah, an advisor at a youth center.‎ In 2012, Kevin attended a course called Ready Set Go in that center. The course was for disadvantaged kids in Kingswood – a low-income area in Sydney’s western suburbs – and its goal was to teach the kids how to create businesses and offer value to the neighborhood.‎ At the end of the course, Sarah took the kids to the local area. She asked volunteers to share their business experiences – Kevin immediately put up his hand. His challenge was to trade his hotdog selling service for free bread at a bakery. Although scared, Kevin was able to share his entrepreneur(创业) story with the shop owner and asked if he could exchange his service for some bread. Unexpectedly, the shop owner told Kevin how moved he was by his story and handed him some bread for free. By the end of the afternoon, his belief in himself and what was possible was at an all- time high.‎ The following week, Kevin sold 70 hotdogs in two hours and made over $200. Soon after, he delivered public speeches in 20 schools, and was selected as part of his school’s leadership team. Now he heads a business group working on how to increase potential customer base.‎ All of his would not have been possible if Kevin had not found his passion and perseverance to improve himself, and those around him. That's according to a first-ever study comparing prehistoric(史前的) bones to those of living people. The finding suggests a revision of history- the everyday lives of prehistoric women were filled with hard labor, rather than just sitting at home doing lighter tasks while the men struggled and fought for life.‎ ‎“Before the study, there are no clear records describing how our ancient ancestors lived. It can be easy to forget that bone is a living tissue, one that responds to the difficulties we put our bodies through,” said lead author Alison Macintosh. “Physical force and muscle activity both put pressure on the bone. The bone reacts by changing in shape, thickness and other aspects over time.”‎ Previous studies only compared female bones to contemporary male bones, the researchers said-and that's a problem, because the response of male bones to stress and change is much bigger than that of women. For instance, as humans moved from a hunter-gatherer lifestyle constantly on the move to a more settled agrarian(农耕的) one, changes can be observed in the structure of the shinbone(胫骨)- and these changes were much more evident in men.‎ However, a comparison of the bones of prehistoric women to the bones of living female athletes can help us work out a more accurate picture of what those prehistoric women were doing. "By analyzing the bones of living people and comparing them to the ancient bones, we can start to explain the kinds of labor our ancestors were reforming, Macintosh said. What they found was that women's leg strength hasn't changed a great deal, but their arms used to be very powerful. Prehistoric women, the researchers found, had arm strength 11-16 percent stronger than those of modern rowers(桨手), and 30 percent stronger than those of non-athletes.‎ ‎8.What does the study tell about prehistoric women?‎ A. They were stronger than men.    B. They had lighter bones than men.‎ C. They did tough tasks as the men.    D. They spent most time staying at home.‎ ‎9.What problem did previous studies on prehistoric bones have?‎ A. They lacked enough comparison.    B. They only studied men' s bones.‎ C. They focused little on bones.    D. They ignored the lifestyles.‎ ‎10.What does the underlined word "that" in Paragraph 3 refer to?‎ A. Bones’ structure.    B. Bones' thickness.‎ C. Bones’ response to stress.    D. Bones’ stress from hard labor.‎ ‎11.What can we learn from the last paragraph?‎ A. It's still hard to explain our ancestors' lifestyle.‎ B. Prehistoric women went through much suffering.‎ C. Women's arms have become much stronger over time.‎ D. Prehistoric women are stronger than contemporary females.‎ D.‎ British scientists monitoring the symptoms(症状) of COVID-19 say a loss of the sense of smell and an inability to taste food should be added to the list of well-known indicators(指标) of COVID-19, which include a high temperature, sore throat, and persistent(持续的) dry cough.‎ The scientists made the discovery after analyzing data collected through an app. The data was gleaned from interactions between 1.8 million users and the app between March 24 and March 31.The team looked at the information harvested from the app and developed a mathematical model that was able to conclude which symptoms in combination were the best at predicting who would subsequently test positive for the disease. The total basket of symptoms included fever, persistent cough, fatigue, diarrhea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, and loss of smell and taste.‎ ‎"When combined with other symptoms, people with loss of smell and taste appear to be three times more likely to have contracted COVID-19 according to our data, and should therefore self-isolate for seven days to reduce the spread of the disease," Tim Spector, the King's College professor who led the study, told the Reuters news agency.‎ However, the team said that a loss of smell and taste can also be an indicator of other infections(感染), such as a common cold, so not everyone with those symptoms will have COVID-19.‎ They said a high fever and persistent cough remain the most important indicators of COVID-19‎ ‎ and the loss of smell and taste should only be noted if they are in combination with other symptoms. So far, Public Health England and the World Health Organization said more research is needed.‎ ‎12. The list of well-known indicators of COVID-19 does not include _______.‎ A. high temperature B. persistent dry cough C. a loss of the sense of hearing D. sore throat ‎13. What can we learn from Tim Spector’s quote?‎ A. People who have lost the sense of smell and taste should self-isolate for 7 days.‎ B. His team developed a mathematical model to find out the positive cases.‎ C. A loss of smell and taste can also be an indicator of other infections.‎ D. A loss of smell and taste alone can be used as an indicator of COVID-19.‎ ‎14. Which of the following statements is TRUE?‎ A. The data was collected through an app within two weeks.‎ B. People who can’t smell or taste must have contracted COVID-19.‎ C. A loss of smell and taste should be considered as one of the indicators of contracting the virus.‎ D. Patients of COVID-19 are more likely to lose the sense of smell than those with a common cold.‎ ‎15. What does the passage mainly talk about?‎ A. A common cold and COVID-19.‎ B. Why we lost the ability of smell and taste.‎ C. What we should do during the COVID-19 pandemic.‎ D.
