Without most people realizing it, there has been revolution in office work over the last ten years. Before that time, large computers were only used by large rich companies that could af ford the investment. With the advancement of technology, small computers have come onto the market which are capableof doing the work which used to be done by much larger and expensive computers, so now most smaller companies can use them.‎ ‎ The main development in small computers has been in the field of word processor system, or WPS as they are often called. 40% of British offices are now estimated to have a word processor and this percentage is growing fast.‎ ‎ There are many advantages in using a word processor for both secretary and manager. The secretary is freed from a lot of daily work, such as retyping letters and storing papers. He or she can use this time to do other more interesting work for the boss. From a manager's point of view, secretarial time is being made better use of and money can be saved by doing daily jobs automatically outside office hours. ‎ ‎ But is it all good? If a lot of daily secretarial work can be done automatically, surely this will mean that fewer secretaries will be needed. Another worry is the increasing medical problems related to work with visual display units (显示器). The ease of a slow loss of sight among people using word processors seems to have risen greatly. It is also feared that if a woman works at a VDU for long hours, the unborn child in her body might be killed. Safety screens to put over a VDU have been invented but few companies in England bother to buy them. ‎ Whatever the arguments for and against word processors, they are a key feature of this revolution in office practice. ‎ ‎1. Ten years ago, large computers were only used by large companies because_________. ‎ ‎ A. small companies did not have enough money to buy such expensive computers ‎ B. large computers could not do the work that small compa nies can do today ‎ C. large computers did not come onto the market ‎ D. small companies did not need to use this new technology ‎ 答案:A 指导:推理判断题。 ‎ ‎2. According to the writer, the main progress made in office work over the last ten years is ‎ _________.‎ ‎ A. the saving of time and money ‎ B. the use of computers in big companies ‎ C. the wide use of word processors ‎ D. the decreasing number of secretaries ‎ 答案:C 指导:细节判断题。 ‎ ‎3. We can infer from the passage that with the use of word processors,_________.‎ ‎ A. some secretaries will lose their jobs ‎ B. all jobs can be done automatically outside office hours ‎ C. medical problems related to work with a VDU must have increased ‎ D. the British companies will make less money ‎ 答案:A 指导:推理判断题。 ‎ ‎4. Which of the following statements is NOT true?‎ ‎ A. There are both advantages and disadvantages in using a word processor.‎ ‎ B. The British companies care much for the health of the people using word processors.‎ ‎ C. The technology in the field of computers has been greatly advanced over the last ten years.‎ ‎ D. Using word processors, secretaries can get more time to do more interesting work for their bosses. Passage ***‎ From the time each of my children started school,I packed their lunches. And in each lunch,I ‎21 a note.Often written on a napkin(餐巾),it might be a thank-you for a 22 moment,a reminder of something we were happily expecting,or a bit of 23 for the coming test or sporting event.‎ In early grade school they 24 their notes. But as children grow older they become self-conscious(有自我意识的),and 25 he reached high school,my older son,Marc, informed me that he no longer 26 my daily notes.Telling him that he no longer needed to 27 them but I still needed to write them,I 28 until the day he graduated.‎ Six years after high school graduation,Marc called and asked if he could move ‎ ‎ 29 for a couple of months. He had spent those years well, graduating from college, 30 two internships(实习) in Washington,D.C.,and 31 ,becoming a technical assistant in Sacramento. 32 short vacation visits, however,he had lived away from home. With his younger sister leaving for ‎ college,I was 33 happy to have Marc back.Since I was 34 making lunch for his younger brother,I 35 one for Marc, too.Imagine my 36 when I got a call from my 24-year-old son, 37 his lunch.‎ ‎“Did I do something 38 ? I 1 that students begin at an earlier age, but, Rohby said that it had always been his mother's 2 to hear him play the piano. So I took him as a student. ‎ ‎ Hard as Robby tried, he 3 the basic sense of music. However, he persisted and at the end of each weekly 4 he'd always say,"My mom's going to hear me play someday." But, it seemed 5 I only knew his mother from a distance as she 6 Rohby off or waited in her aged car to pick him up. She always 7 and smiled but never stopped in. Then one day Robhy 8 coming to our lessons. He telephoned me and said his mother was 9 Several weeks later I was preparing my students for the upcoming recital(实习公演) 10 Robby came and asked me if he could be in the recital. "Miss Hondorf.. I've just go to 11 !"he insisted.‎ ‎ The night for the recital came. The high school gymnasiurn was 12 with parents, friends and relatives. The recital went off well. Then Robby came up on stage. I was 13 when he announced that he had chosen Mozart's Concerto No. 21 in C Major(莫扎特的C大调21号协奏曲). I was not 14 . what I heard next. His fingers were light on the keys. They even 15 on the keys... He played so well that everyone was 16 their feet in wild applause (鼓掌). In tears I ran up on 17 . "Oh Robby! How'd you do it?"‎ ‎"Well Miss Hondorf... I kept on 18 at home. Remember I told you my mom was sick? Well, 19 she had cancer and passed away this morning. And well.., she wasborn deaf, so tonight was the 20 time she ever heard me play... " ‎ ‎1. A. prefer B. conclude C. suppose D. wish ‎ 答案:A 指导:prefer后面跟从句表达作者的“意愿”,意为“宁愿……”。 ‎ ‎4. A. test B. lesson C. show D. trial ‎ 答案:B 指导:此处是指每周“上课”结束后,罗比总是满怀信心。 ‎ ‎6 A. put B. sent C. dropped D. saw ‎ 答案:C 指导:drop sb.off表示的意义与picks sb.up正好相反。picksb.up是用车“拉客”而drop sb. off的意思是“让某人下车”。 ‎ ‎7. A. waved B. left C. waited D. rose ‎ 答案: A 指导:此处表示罗比的母亲很友好,总是向作者“挥手”、“微笑”。 ‎ ‎10. A. as B. while C. since D. when ‎ 答案:D 指导:when用作并列连词,当“正在这个时候(突然)"……” ‎ ‎11. A. succeed B. learn C. play D. come ‎ 答案:C 指导:从后文看,此处表示罗比强烈要求登台“演奏”‎ ‎。 ‎ ‎12. A. seated B. held C. packed D. mixed be packed with=be crowded with.‎ beseated作主语的一般是人;hold表示“容纳”时,不用于被动语态;bemixedwith意为“与·....·混杂”。‎ ‎13. ‎ ‎14. A. pleased with B. interested in C. clear about D. prepared for ‎ 答案:D 指导:此处表示作者对罗比下面的演奏也没有心理准备。be prepared for意为“为…… 满意”;be interested in"对…… ‎ ‎16. A. off B. at C. against D. on ‎ 答案:D 指导:be。 ‎ ‎19. A. unfortunately B. therefore C. however D. actually ‎ 答案:D 指导:此处罗比说明母亲生病去世的真相,因此用actually,相当于infact.therefore"所以”,however"然而”,都不符合此处上下文的逻辑关系;unfortunatel/‘不幸的是”,干扰性很大。 ‎ ‎20. A. last B first C. best D. worst ‎ 答案:B 指导:从前文可知,罗比的母亲耳聋,因此不能听他演奏,罗比认为只有她去世后才能在天堂听他演奏,故应是“第一次”。
