Here are five simple ways to beat holiday stress. Get Outside and Exercise Getting physical activity as a family is a great way to establish healthy habits with your kids, and to spend shared time celebrating together. A short walk counts. Follow along with some exercise or yoga DVDs. Your body will thank you with the feel-good endorphins(内啡肽)that follow any continuous workout. Shop Online Want to skip traffic, crowds, and the time spent on holiday shopping in stores? Just click it away. Shopping online allows you to easily compare prices. Gifts can be delivered, often wrapped, to your door. Manage your relatives Tension from contentious(爱争论的) relatives increase the stress level in any holiday gathering. But you can minimize the challenges created by this difficult people. Firstly, limit your time at stressful family events. Show up early, and leave within an hour after dessert. Secondly, celebrate with relatives you like. Don’t feel like you have to spend an equal amount of time with annoying relatives. Thirdly, volunteer at a shelter or food bank. Doing good will make it easier to ignore any family negativity. Stay on Budget Start budgeting by factoring in all holiday-related purchases, including cards, postage, decorations, new clothes, food, entertaining and travel. How much should you spend during the holiday season? A good standard is 1.5 percent of your annual income. Stay Organized Take a moment each night to review and update the next day’s to-do list, keeping each item reasonable and specific. Use a family whiteboard or calendar to stay on top of family activities. Then, make a point of eating breakfast as a family to establish any shared tasks for the day. 21. The first paragraph serves as a(n) _________. A. explanation B. introduction C. comment D. background 22. How should you deal with the relatives you don’t like during holiday gatherings? A. Shorten the stay time with them. B. Prepare some food for them. C. Ignore the existence of them. D. Come up with some topics they like. 23. If you can earn $1500 a month, the proper expense for the holiday should be __________. A. $300 B. $270 C. $225 D. $350 B Slipping her gold rings off and putting them into a dish, my mother would use her hands to massage a mixture of flour and water. Then she’d shape the mixture into loaves of bread and put them into the oven. After they had been baked, she’d take them out. Then, with her short fingers, she’d put them directly onto the plates. “How do you do that?” I asked her, moving aside quickly so that the heat wouldn’t hit my eight-year-old face. “Doesn’t it hurt?” She laughed and put a loaf of bread onto a plate for me. The tips of her fingers were numb and couldn’t feel anything after decades of touching direct heat. “Oh, you get used to it.” I have a photo of my mum close to my age, 24. When I was younger, I hated this photo. Everyone was surprised at how much we looked alike: thick dark hair, round nose and strong chin. I have my dad’s cheekbones and his smile, but I got everything else form my mom --- whether I wanted it or not. I grew up surrounded by girls named Ashley and Jessica, with hair the colour of straw(麦秆), beak-like noses and good figures. I wanted to look like them, rather than broad-shouldered and coffee-coloured, like my mother. You probably know this, but it took me a while to figure it out: it’s difficult to change literally everything about the way you look. The older I get, though, the more I see her all over my body, and the more I like myself. The skin on my shoulders feels like hers. Our frown is the same, too. But the most striking is how my hands are aging into hers. My mom’s hair is grey now, and she has a small sunspot(雀斑) on her cheek ( in the same place I’m getting one, too --- thanks, Mom). But in my head, she’s stuck in her 20s in that photo. And the older I get, the more it’s an unexpected comfort to know that wherever I am, I see her somewhere with me. 24. The mother was able to pick up the hot bread with her fingers because ______. A. she was used to the heat B. she was brave C. the bread was not that hot D. she liked to eat hot bread 25. Why did the author hate her mother’s photo at first? A. Because she thought her mother was not beautiful. B. Because the photo was very old. C. Because she hated people saying she was like her mother. D. Because no one liked her mother. 26. What is the correct order of the author’s feelings about her mother in the text? ①Fondness. ②Curiosity ③Hatred ④Gratitude A.①②③④ B.②③①④ C.②④③① D.③②④① 27. What does the text mainly reflect? A. The author’s family life. B. The difference between the author and her mother in appearance. C. The knowledge that the author learned from her mother. D. The author’s love and respect for their mother. C It' s OK to say you've never heard of grime(伦敦地下音乐)- unless you're from the UK. That's because this music genre(流派) was invented in the UK in the early 2000s. To someone who's not familiar with underground music culture, it's easy to get confused between hip-hop and grime since they are both noisy. And many people didn’t bother to tell them apart, until earlier this month when grime stars like Stormzy and J Hus led this year's mobo---“music of black origin”- award nominations(提名) in the UK. Just like UK electronic music and hip-hop, from which grime drew influence, it mostly reflects the thoughts of young people. But different from hip-hop, grime singers sing in dialects with strong accents, giving a special flavor to their songs. Lady Leshurr, known as the "Grime Queen", said that she once tried to hide her accent, as she didn’t want people to judge her, according to The Independent. But one day, she realized that she didn't need to change herself just to please others. And there's no doubt that this is the essence(精髓) of grime music: be yourself. “Grime has challenged contemporary music in its production aesthetic(美感) and in its lyrical approach,” Mykaell Riley, director of the black music research unit at the University of Westminster, London, told the BBC. Also different from the hip-hop culture, which usually focuses on being rich, grime singers pay more attention to social phenomena like the European refugee problem and the gap between the rich and poor. Although still quite a young music genre, grime seems to be getting favored by more and more people. In 2016, the English grime artist Skepta won the Mercury Prize with his album Konnichiwea, beating big names like David Bowie and Radiohead. However, no matter whether grime is one day accepted by the mainstream music world or not, one thing is for sure: in grime, singers always stay true to themselves 28. People are most likely to confuse grime music with ______ music. A. jazz B. blues C. country D. hip-hop 29. Which of the following is a big name in grime music? A David Bowie. B. Radiohead. C. Lady Leshurr. D. Mykaell Riley. 30. What makes grime music different from other music genres? A. It is known for being very noisy. B. It reflects the thoughts of young people C. It is sung in dialects with strong accents. D. It is mainly popular with the rich 31. What is the essence of grime music? A. The search for a peaceful life. B. Staying true to oneself. C. Challenging traditions. D. Caring for the community. D. Do lobsters(龙虾), crabs(蟹) or other crustaceans(甲壳纲动物) feel pain? We certainly consider they don’t. Most chefs cook lobsters and crabs alive, usually by throwing them in boiling water, along with melted butter. We may feel a bit of guilt, or maybe just discomfort, when we hear the creatures making sharp, knocking sounds around the inside of the pot as the water boils. But that feeling usually dissolves for lobster lovers by the time they eat the delicious meat. We wouldn’t dream of doing the same thing to a live chicken or pig which is dead well before the cooking process begins, but those crustaceans are different. They don’t even feel pain. Right? Actually, they just might. That’s the conclusion of a new study published in the Journal of Experimental Biology. Robert Elwood and Barry Magee examined the reaction of common shore crabs to small electric shocks. Ninety crabs were placed in a brightly lit tank and were given the choice of moving to one of two dark shelters. (Shore crabs like to hide in dark spaces.) Once they’ve made their choice, the crabs in one of the shelters were exposed to an electric shock. After a rest period, the crabs were returned to the lit tank. Most of the crabs went back into the dark shelters, and then the same crabs were given another electric shock. When they were placed back into the lit tank for the third time, the majority of the shocked crabs instead went to the other dark shelter, avoiding the one where they had repeatedly been given shocks. As Elwood put it, the crab’s choice indicated that they wanted to escape the shocks: having experienced two rounds of shocks, the crabs learned to avoid the shelter where they received the shocks. They were willing to give up their hideaway in order to avoid the source of their probable pain. 32. According to the author, people cook crabs alive due to the belief that _________. A. it is not guilty to treat a crab cruelly B. it is too hard to kill a crab C. a crab doesn’t feel pain as a chicken or a pig does D. the crab is a kind of popular and healthy seafood 33. The underlined world “dissolves” in the first paragraph probably means “__________”. A. becomes weaker B. strengthens gradually C. comes into being D. remains unchanged 34. In the experiment, the shore crabs __________. A. were placed into two dark shelters B. were given electric shocks in the lit tank C. were able to choose which shelter to go to D. were put into the lit tank twice 35. What does Robert W. Elwood and Barry Magee’s new study prove? A. It is hard to tell whether a voiceless shore crab is feeling pain or not. B. Shore crabs react to electric shocks and seemingly feel pain. C. Shore crabs prefer a dark shelter as their habitat. D. Bright light causes discomfort to crustaceans. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 The Benefits of Drinking Hot Water I think that most of us know by now that water is necessary for our survival. 36 However, what most people don’t know is that warm water and hot water have some unique benefits of their own.
