B My brother-in-law opened the bottom drawer of my sister’s cupboard and lifted out a wonderful dress. “This,” he said, “is not an ordinary dress.” He handed me the dress. It was elegant, silk and handmade. The price tag on it was still attached. “Jan bought this the first time we went to New York, at least 8 or 9 years ago. She never wore it. She was saving it for a special occasion.” “Well, I guess this is the occasion.” He took the dress from me and put it on the bed, with the other clothes we were taking to the funeral. His hands touched the soft material for a moment, then he shut the drawer and turned to me, “Don’t ever save anything for a special occasion. Every day you’re alive is a special occasion.” I remembered those words through the funeral and the days that followed when I helped him deal with all the sad things. I thought about them on the plane returning to California. I thought about all the things that my sister hadn’t seen, heard or done. I thought about the things that she had done without realizing that they were special. I’m not sure what my sister would have done had she known that she wouldn’t be here for the tomorrow we all take for granted. I think she would have called family members and a few close friends. She might have called a few former friends to apologize and mend fences for past quarrels. I like to think she would have gone out for a Chinese dinner, her favorite food. I’m guessing. I’ll never know. “A special occasion” and “someday” are being lost from my vocabulary. If it’s worth seeing, hearing or doing, I want to see, hear and do it now. If I knew that my hours were limited, those little things left undone would make me angry. Angry because I put off seeing good friends whom I was going to get in touch with someday. Angry and sorry because I didn’t tell my husband and daughter enough how much I truly love them. I’m trying very hard not to put off, hold back, or save anything that would add laughter to our lives. And every morning when I open my eyes, I tell myself that every day, every minute, every breath truly, is a gift from God. 23. What do we know about the writer’s sister? A. She was a very mean woman even to herself. B. She didn’t expect she would die so early. C. She felt regret for not enjoying every day. D. She didn’t have a chance to wear the dress. 24. According to the passage, the writer tends to ______ in her daily life. A. work harder to earn more money for future B. save her best perfume for special parties C. wear her best coat even to the market if she likes D. celebrate only important festivals with her family 26. The underlined phrase in Paragraph 6 is closest to the meaning of ______. A. fixing her fences B. forgetting past unhappiness by forgiving C. finding hidden reasons D. making up for broken relationships 27. What should be the best title for the text? A. An unusual dress B. My poor sister C. Every day is a gift D. A special occasion is coming C You discover a shampoo (洗发水) that leaves your hair looking beautiful. But gradually, as you use it more, its magical effects seem to wear off. “It’s just your hair getting used to it,” your mum says. And so you put the shampoo back and head off in search of your next wonder product. It sort of makes sense — why else would something that left you looking nice at first suddenly start losing its effect ten washes in? But are there some other factors at play? Can your hair really get used to a certain shampoo? Marie Claire spoke to hair experts and it turns out that it’s not true. Your hair cannot get so used to a product that it just stops working. So what’s the deal? Cynthia Alvarez, a famous hair stylist, explained that there are a number of contributing factors to your hair puzzle, but basically, it’s not the shampoo. “A shampoo does not stop working because your hair gets used to it,” she said. “If your shampoo stops giving you the results you want, the condition and needs of your hair have most likely changed, or the season may have changed — it’s more humid (潮湿), the sun is stronger, or the air is drier. Your state of health may also be different from a recent illness.” In other words you need to give up blaming the shampoo. So what can you do to make your hair look beautiful for a little longer? Alvarez suggests changing your ways of hair care when factors, such as the weather, change. Experts also suggest keeping an eye on the amount of shampoo you’re using because over conditioning can be bad for your hair. 28. What does the text begin with? A. The shampoo market. B. Shampoo misuse. C. A mother’s description of a shampoo. D. A misunderstanding about shampoo. 29. What is Cynthia Alvarez’s opinion about shampoo and hair care? A. Your hair can easily get used to a shampoo. B. A shampoo can still work after being used for a long time. C. Your hair condition is influenced by the quality of your shampoo. D. Your hair can get used to different shampoos. 30. How many major factors influence your hair condition, according to Cynthia Alvarez? A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four. 31. To keep your hair looking nice, you should ______. A. change the shampoo regularly B. use a proper amount of shampoo every time C. stick to your way of hair care D. keep an eye on changes in your hair D Certainly, a well-rounded education is the foundation of our growth. I am grateful to the many incredible teachers who have inspired me to do greater things, and have fired my enthusiasm for lifelong learning! I have also been honored to have the most amazing teachers in all of my children’s lives. These are extraordinary people who not only teach our children, but love them, challenge them, and provide an environment where a child learns how to learn. However, sometimes I wonder if the outline of our educational plan is lacking something. I watched the movie Easy A with my older daughter. The main character’s parents were loving, supportive, and built great confidence in their daughter and developed her ability to handle her own problems. There was a scene where the mother was speaking to the younger child and he announced that he received an “A” on his spelling test. She replied, “That’s great, honey, but everything has spell check these days.” It was funny... but TRUE! I don’t mean that we shouldn’t teach our children how to spell, but maybe some of our time should be spent educating them about the dangers of posting things on Facebook. Maybe we might want to spend time showing them how real life works — the credit card isn’t free money — you will have to pay it back at sometime. Oh, and get this — they charge you for borrowing that money. Perhaps, we should spend some time on interpersonal relationships. I worry that our kids do not know how to relate to one another. Choosing a career is a daunting task. My daughter is in her second year in college and has changed her major twice. It’s not that she didn’t know what she wanted to do. What she “wanted to do” and the degree she chose did not match. I have learned many college students do not know what they want to do because they haven’t seen what it looks like in the real world. Being a journalist in the real world looks very different from writing stories. Maybe if we spent some time letting them experience real life — maybe two or three courses in areas of interest in high schools that give them a “feel” for what that particular field would look like, they might be better prepared. I do not know the solution, but it seems that it should at least be a topic of discussion. 32. Why does the author mention the movie Easy A? A. To share with the readers his feeling about the movie. B. To show parents pay little attention to spelling. C. To prove the importance of book learning. D. To lead to the topic he is going to talk about. 33. The author believes that ______. A. courses in areas of interest in high schools will benefit students B. students need to focus on the skills in learning C. his daughter is smart enough to make her own choice D. parents should agree with school in education 34. The underlined word “daunting” in Paragraph 5 probably means “______”. A. specific B. discouraging C. temporary D. regular 35. What is mainly discussed in the passage? A. What students learn in school should be practiced in life. B. Students should spend more time discussing practical problems. C. Schools should prepare students for the real life. D. Life experience is of greater importance than school education. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。 What exactly is creativity? So many of us believe that creativity is something we had as a child but we lost, or something owned by few individuals that we can only admire from far away. 36 The key is recognizing that creativity can be displayed in many different ways, from the deeply personal experience of uncovering a new idea or experience to expressing ourselves through words, photos, fashion, and other everyday creations, to the work of famous artists. Scientists have found that creativity does not involve a single brain region or even a single side of the brain. 37 This complex process is made up of many cognitive (认知的) systems and emotions. There’s something we can do to improve our creativity. It’s important to make time for being completely alone, to give yourself space to reflect, make new connections, and find meaning. 38 We tend to view time spent alone as time wasted. But the ability to enjoy and make productive use of our own company can arouse creativity by helping us dig into our thoughts and our own inner world. 39 Research has found that the desire to learn and discover seems to be more important. So, if you want to improve your creativity, try out a totally different medium of expression, or take a new route home from work, or seek out a new group of people with different interests or values that you might learn from. 40 You will be able to recognize new patterns and find links among seemingly unrelated pieces of information. A. So, don’t avoid it, but hug it! B. Instead, it draws upon the whole brain. C. Will these mean you will become a creative genius? D. Unfortunately, it is widely made light of in society. E. Being open to new experiences can help increase your brain. F. But science has shown that, in many ways, we are all born to create. G. The secret to creative greatness appears to be doing things differently. 第三部分:语言知识运用(共三节,满分55分) 第一节:完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 One man was to meet his wife downtown and spend some time shopping with her.
