M: We should probably start by saying how clouds are formed, and then move on to the different types of clouds. We can separate them into low-level, medium-level and high clouds. W: Great, and we should also make a PowerPoint to make the presentation more interesting. M: Right. We should have small cards, too. I’m useless at remembering what to say without them. W: Me too. Well, I’m quite happy to organize everything we’ve found out about clouds and make sure it fits into our presentation times. M: Actually, I’d better do that. How about if you make the presentation slides? W: OK. M: Then I’ll also look on the Internet for pictures of different types of clouds. W: That’ll be great. I’ll prepare the cards so we don’t forget what we’re saying. M: Sounds great. What section do you want to talk about? W: I hate speaking in front of people so I’d prefer not to do the introduction. M: I’ll do that. If you don’t want to talk much, then why don’t you just do the middle bit about the medium-level clouds? W: That’s OK. 17. In the west of the village. 20. What is most villagers’ attitude towards the government plans? A. Fully satisfied. B. Rather worried. C. Quite unexpected. C 18. A 19. A 20. M: And now for our main headlines on Southern Local News for today. First of all, the report about the government plans on developments around the village of Tartlesbury was published this morning. The new motorway will pass along the north side of the village. It will cross the River Teeme from the well-known beauty spot, Streeve Beach, to the north-east of the village. The motorway will cut the village off from the Streeve Beach, where many children play. But that is not the end of it. There are also plans to build a thousand houses on farmland west of the village. And on top of that is the plan to build a high-tech park for new technology companies. It will be built in the south of the village, where the old steel factory used to be. A new center with a swimming pool and a large supermarket are also planned next to the park. And, as has been expected, the plans have created quite a lot of interest. Not all people are for them. Mr. Khan, a local shopkeeper said, “Most of us in the village are absolutely concerned about what is being planned here. This is just a chance for some people to make money quickly. Of course, we welcome the jobs that the new technology park will bring, but we feel more worried that the large increase in housing and the planned motorway will destroy the character of the area.” I think this is a debate that is going to run on for quite some time and we here on Local News will keep you informed. A Four things that you can’t miss in Macao Macao Tower AJ Hackett Bungee Jump The Macao Tower, 338 meters is the world’s 10th highest tower, with a variety of activities, such as gambling, eating and entertainment. One of the acclaimed activities is the bungee jump. The AJ Hackett Macao Tower Bungee Jump is 233 meters high, making it the highest commercial bungee jump in the world. Raise your arms and off you go! If you are not daring enough to jump that height, you can try the skywalk on the 57th floor —it’s still remarkable. Grabbing a traditional Portuguese dinner Macao was colonized by Portugal before 1999. As a result, Portuguese culture is deeply immersed into many comers of Macao. Many Portuguese settled and opened Portuguese restaurants in the special administrative region, but the flavor is more adaptable to Chinese people. Marking at the Ruins of St Paul The Ruins of St. Paul is the significant landmark of Macao. The ruins consist of the St. Paul’s College and the Church of St Paul, built in 1583. However, after three intense fires in 1595, 1601 and 1835, the church was seriously damaged. It is beyond belief that after the vigorous cycles of rebuilding and fires, the huge surface and the front stairway remain unburned. Visiting a museum Macao, as a tiny city with only an area of 30.5 square kilometers, has 23 eye-catching museums. Due to its unique history, both eastern and western historical sites can be found. 由第一段中的“The AJ Hackett Macao Tower Bungee Jump is 233 meters high, making it the highest commercial bungee jump in the world. Raise your arms and off you go!”(AJ Hackett 澳门塔蹦极跳高 233 米,是世界上最高的商业蹦极。) 由 第 二 段 中 的 “As a result, Portuguese culture is deeply immersed into many comers of Macao.”(因此,葡萄牙文化深深地融入了澳门的许多角落。)和第四段中的“Due to its unique history, both eastern and western historical sites can be found.”(由于其独特的历史,东西方历史遗址皆有。),可知 Grabbing a traditional Portuguese dinner 和 Visiting a museum 的共同之处在于人们能感受东西方文化。 由 第 二 段 中 的 “Many Portuguese settled and opened Portuguese restaurants in the special administrative region, but the flavor is more adaptable to Chinese people.”(许多葡萄牙人在特别行政区定居并 开设葡萄牙餐馆,但其风味更适合中国人。) B I just counted how many foreign languages: it’s been twelve! I always follow my interests and find ways to put my language learning into things I’m already interested in. I like to read blogs in other languages. I found them the perfect learning tool because they’re usually written in oral language, so I don’t have to worry much about adopting strange terms that are only used in writing. Movies are also a really good tool, especially if you can find subtitles in the language you’re learning. Though they don’t always exactly match what’s being said, they will still keep your brain listening and reading in the same language. Music is another way to start listening to things in your new language. Personally, this doesn’t really work for me, but I have friends who learn a language through lyrics. Games are also an excellent way of studying a new language. A lot of language learning computer programs include games. I’m super competitive and if I play any of them, I can be hooked for hours. When the initial excitement of learning a new language begins to fade, it can be hard to stick with it. Ideally I will sign up to take a big language exam because then I’ll have to keep studying, and work to master the details that seem unimportant enough in everyday usage that I tend to just ignore them. Each time I start getting complacent, it’s time to take a new course or sign up for online lessons, or take up some sort of challenge that will require me to level up my skills. I also try to think in the language I’m learning. The best language class I’ve ever taken was my beginner’s Russian course at university where my professor never used any English. It got to the point where I would kind of just forget about English while in Russian class, which helped me to really immerse myself in the Russian language and do a lot with the limited Russian I had. 24. Why are blogs perfect learning tool according to the author? A. Because they only use oral language. B. Because they don’t use professional terms. C. Because they often use several languages. D. Because their language is usually informal. 25. What will author do if he loses passion when learning a new language? A. Take an exam. B. Stick with it. C. Sign up for online lessons. D. Choose a new course. 26. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “complacent ” in paragraph 4? A. bored B. discouraged C. self-satisfied D. self-disciplined 27. What’s the purpose of the text? A. To call on readers to learn new languages. B. To share personal language learning tips. C. To recommend some blogs and movies to language learners. D. To help deal with common problems in learning new languages. D 25. A 26. C 27. 由第一段中的“I found them the perfect learning tool because they’re usually written in oral language, so I don’t have to worry much about adopting strange terms that are only used in writing.” 由第四段中的“Ideally I will sign up to take a big language exam because then I’ll have to keep studying, and work to master the details that seem unimportant enough in everyday usage that I tend to just ignore them.” 故选 A 项。 由第四段中的“it’s time to take a new course or sign up for online lessons, or take up some sort of challenge that will require me to level up my skills.” C It has been four years since the Flashfood App was set to hit Canadian grocery stores and make it easier for shoppers to buy soon-to-expiry (保质期) food at a discount. Much to my delight, I heard it advertised recently on a radio station and figured it’s time for an update, especially since people became more aware of food waste’s role in the climate crisis. The first thing I did was download the App. I hadn’t done it before because it was limited to a few locations, but now it’s all over Canada. I could see immediately that many brands of yogurt are all marked down 50 percent. Users pay for the food using the App, and then pick it up at a marked location in the store. There is no need for you to worry about them actually being bad. It makes sense for retailers to get behind this App because it offers a win-win situation for everyone involved. Flashfood sells 75% of the products made available through its App while saving consumers an average of 50% on those grocery items, and it has 300 000 active users right now. That number is expected to grow naturally as Flashfood partners with more grocers. “As a food retailer, we are in the business of providing food, not wasting it. The Flashfood program allows us to provide our customers with a convenient and environmentally sustainable (可持续的) way to purchase food. Loblaw sells 77% of the items it puts on Flashfood, moving an average of $800 to $1000 worth of goods weekly at each of its largest stores,” said Gord Chem, senior VP with Loblaw’s Real Canadian Superstores. I love looking for discount deals at the grocery store and always keep an eye out for the hot pink clearance stickers. But it’s always random, and I never know what I’m going to get from week to week. The appeal of Flashfood is that I can see what’s available, pre-purchase it, and leave it off my shopping list. 28. What can we know about the food on the Flashfood? A. It’s delivered directly to the customers. B. Users can pay for it in the marked store. C. Much of it is charged at half the price. D. It’ll be a month away before it goes bad. 29. According to Gord Chem, the Flashfood is ________. A. reliable B. doubtful C. creative D. beneficial 30. How is the advantage of Flashfood introduced in the last paragraph? A. By making a comparison. B. By listing some examples. C. By explaining the cause. D. By introducing the result. 31. What is the main idea of the text? A. Customers can buy much cheaper food on a recent app. B. Canadians have a smart approach to reducing food waste. C. A win-win situation has been set for Canadians involved. D. Canadians adopt a new way of protecting the environment. C 29. D 30. A 31. 从第二段第三句“I could see immediately that many brands of yogurt are all marked down 50 percent.” 以及第三段“ Flashfood sells 75% of the products made available through its App while saving consumers an average of 50% on those grocery items, and it has 300 000 active users right now.” 从第四段中“The Flashfood program allows us to provide our customers with a convenient and environmentally sustainable (可持续的) way to purchase food. Loblaw sells 77% of the items it puts on Flashfood, moving an average of $800 to $1000 worth of goods weekly at each of its largest stores”可知,Flashfood 计划 使我们能够为我们的客户提供一个方便的和环境可持续的方式来购买食物。 从最后一段“love looking for discount deals at the grocery store and always keep an eye out for the hot pink clearance stickers. But it’s always random, and I never know what I’m going to get from week to week. The appeal of Flashfood is that I can see what’s available, pre-purchase it, and leave it off my shopping list.” 故选 A 。 根据文章第一段(主题段)“It has been four years since the Flashfood App was set to hit Canadian grocery stores and make it easier for shoppers to buy soon-to-expiry (保质期) food at a discount. Much to my delight, I heard it advertised recently on a radio station and figured it’s time for an update, especially since people became more aware of food waste’s role in the climate crisis.” D Inflammation (炎症) is the body’s defense mechanism. You might have experienced it if you sustained physical injuries or had an infection, like the flu, which causes a sore throat. Inflammation can occur in any organ, but it is most common and easy to see in the skin. You will notice redness, heat and swelling. Usually this is a good thing, as it shows you have a healthy immune system that can kill pathogens (病原体) and repair damage. However, inflammation can be a double-edged sword as in some people it can target the body’s healthy cells, causing what is called an autoimmune disease. Given this danger, a new study from Cambridge University, UK, has been looking into brain conditions that are not usually linked to autoimmune diseases. The study found that inflammation of the brain — known as neuroinflammation (神经炎症) — has been linked to several forms of dementia (痴呆). In this new study, researchers scanned the brains of 31 volunteers with three different types of dementia. The first scan was to highlight neuroinflammation, and a second scan illuminated (阐明) poisonous proteins that are linked with dementia. The team also examined 12 post-mortem (after death) brains. These experiments showed similar patterns of poisonous protein build-up and neuroinflammation, suggesting a relationship between inflammation and dementia. “Even we were surprised by how tightly these two problems mapped on to each other. Now, the big question is what role this neuroinflammation plays in the decline of the mind associated with dementia,” said Thomas Cope, one of the authors of the study. Another of the study’s researchers, James Rowe, highlighted the importance of further research. He said the frequent presence of inflammation in neurodegenerative (神经退化的) diseases, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, “offers hope that immune-based treatments might help slow or prevent these conditions”. 32. Why is inflammation usually a good thing? A. It can defend our body against infection. B. It allows injuries to heal themselves. C. It gives long-term protection to healthy cells. D. It is a reflection of a healthy immune system. 33. What did the study from Cambridge University find? A. Neuroinflammation leads to dementia. B. Increased poisonous proteins in the brain cause dementia. C. There are links between neuroinflammation and dementia. D. Poisonous protein build-up and neuroinflammation have different patterns. 34. What is still unknown according to Thomas Cope? A. Why neuroinflammation is connected with dementia. B. How the decline of the mind is associated with dementia. C. How to prevent neuroinflammation from developing into dementia. D. To what extent neuroinflammation and dementia are linked with each other. 35. What can be inferred from James Rowe’s words? A. Inflammation is one of the causes of neuroinflammation. B. Immune-based treatments would be the best cure for dementia. C. Research on neuroinflammation could help treat neurodegenerative diseases. D. Further research will focus on methods of cutting poisonous proteins in the brain. D 33. C 34. D 35. 根据第二段中的“Usually this is a good thing, as it shows you have a healthy immune system that can kill pathogens (病原体) and repair damage.” 根据第三段中的“The study found that inflammation of the brain — known as neuroinflammation (神经炎症) — has been linked to several forms of dementia (痴呆).” 根据倒数第二段““Even we were surprised by how tightly these two problems mapped on to each other. Now, the big question is what role this neuroinflammation plays in the decline of the mind associated with dementia,” said Thomas Cope, one of the authors of the study.” 根据最后一段“He said the frequent presence of inflammation in neurodegenerative (神经退化的) diseases, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, “offers hope that immune-based treatments might help slow or prevent these conditions”.” An endangered species is a group of animals that could soon become extinct. ___36___ Many species are nearly extinct and could disappear off the face of the earth very soon if we don’t do anything to save them. There are many reasons why species become endangered. Habitat destruction is the main reason why animals become endangered and this happens in two ways. When humans move into a new area, the animals’ habitat is destroyed and there is nowhere for them to live and nothing to eat because humans chop down trees and build houses and farms. ___37___ Chemicals in rivers and poisons on farms cause the destruction of animals’ homes and food supplies. ___38___ Animals have been brought to the edge of extinction because they are killed for their highly-valued meat, fur, bones or skin, or just for sport. Mark and Mindy stepped out of the van and looked at their new home with pride. They had both been saving for a long time to purchase their first house together and were very excited to go on a new venture. Within an hour they had unloaded a number of boxes and were pleased with their progress. The sky had begun to darken slightly, but the weather was still pleasant. Then Mindy heard it – even felt it. There was a large clap of thunder and then a bolt of lightning. Mindy and Mark immediately froze and looked at each other, then looked at the boxes scattered (分散) on their lawn. They hastily raced to get their belongings indoors, but not before getting caught in heavy rain. The couple stood in their living room, wet from head to toe, surrounded by what were now very wet boxes. Then, Mark noticed a pool of water in the hallway. He went to inspect and found that there was water dripping from the ceiling. “We can have someone fix it,” Mindy said. “I’ll grab a bucket to catch the water for now.” A moment later Mark heard a scream and raced into the kitchen just in time to see a mouse running across the floor. Mindy was frozen with fright. “Don’t worry. We can take care of that!” Mark said, trying to sound as reassuring (安心的) as possible. “Let’s go unpack some of the boxes. That will make us feel better.” Mark and Mindy made their way to the living room, but when they opened a box holding their kitchen utensils (器皿) and dishes, they found that all of their plates, bowls and cups were broken. They looked at each other in dismay (沮丧). “What do we do now?” Mindy asked. Their first day in their new home was not turning out to be the joyous occasion they had expected. Paragraph 1 Just then, there was a knock at the door. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________ Paragraph 2 Suddenly they heard a noise from the attic (阁楼). ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文: Just then, there was a knock at the door. Opening the door wearily, Mark found an elderly man standing on the porch with some savory (可口的) cookies. Grinning, the man introduced himself as Tom. Upon seeing the van parked outside, he brought cookies to welcome his new neighbors. Tom’s words and the smell of the cookies calmed Mark a lot, but with the boxes in the room in a mess, Mark felt embarrassed. Unexpectedly, Tom came in and helped the hosts clean up the room and finally they sat down together, enjoying the cookies happily. Suddenly they heard a noise from the attic. Puzzled, Mindy ran upstairs. “It’s a lovely kitten,” Mindy cried cheerfully. “It must be because James, the former owner of the house, used to feed a stray cat to drive out the mice,” smiled Tom. “It was James who helped me when I was helpless, just as you are now.” Feeling the warmth from the neighbor, Mark and Mindy were very grateful. The rain is still falling, but it could never dampen their hopes for the future. 如:introduce oneself as sb.,clean up,drive out 等高级词汇;现在分词短语作状语 Unexpectedly, Tom came in and helped the hosts clean up the room and finally they sat down together, enjoying the cookies happily. It must be because James, the former owner of the house, used to feed a stray cat to drive out the mice,强调句型结构 It was James who helped me when I was helpless
