Baby shower(婴儿洗礼) poems can have rhythm and rhyme, but they certainly don't have to. Poems can be either long or short, but short is probably best for your typical baby shower needs. You can add a little humor as well!‎ ‎ The people who are most often touched by baby shower poems are those who have had children themselves. Sweet poems can remind them of the time when their little ones were still young. No one will appreciate them more than the family members themselves. If you are a creative writer or have a special talent for putting words together in a special way, then you should try writing your own baby shower poems. This would make a great gift idea as well.‎ ‎ If you decide to write your own baby poems, even common things can inspire you. Inspiration can be found anywhere. Back when the Greeks first started the Olympics, they held poetry contests as well as athletic competitions.‎ Now,poetry competitions have been revived(恢复). This year 120,000 high school students competed in the first Poetry Out Loud national recitation contest, performing poems from memory for $100,000 in prizes.‎ The first competitions were held in classrooms. The winners went on to school-wide contests, and then they competed in city and state competitions. Finally, the 50 state champions, along with the District of Columbia champion came to Washington D.C. last week for the last showdown. After the 51 champions competed against one another, 12 went on to the finals. Then the field was narrowed to five. The final five had one last chance to “perform” a poem. The overall champ, Jackson Hille, a high school senior from Ohio, won a $20,000 scholarship.‎ The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation started Poetry Out Loud, because they realized that bearing a poem performed is a different experience from reading it on a page.‎ ‎ It's not just a matter of saying the words in the right order. It's the tone of voice, the pauses, the gestures and the attitude of the person performing that bring the words to life. “Each time we hear somebody recite a poem, we understand again what we found fresh and interesting about it,” said National Public Radio Broadcaster Scott Simon, master of ceremonies for the finals. Hearing it in a new voice offers something new to the listener.‎ ‎ Not only do the people hearing poems have a new experience, but memorizing and presenting poems helps the participants(选手) understand those poems in a new way. Another benefit of a competition such as Poetry Out Loud is that the participants learn public-speaking skills that can help them for life.‎ ‎1.From the first paragraph,we can know ________.‎ ‎ A.the Greeks were the first to write poems ‎ B.the Olympics used to start with poem reciting ‎ C.poems were spread orally in the past ‎ D.athletes were asked to recite poems before competing ‎2.How many rounds of competitions did the champions take before they went to Washington ‎ D.C.?‎ ‎ A.Three. In the fantasy tale they might be any one of us and that is precisely the point. We are asked not to stand on the outside and survey this tale. __2__ Thus we find characters quite like ourselves.‎ ‎ Even though we may all like to play Superman,in literature it seems that we stand outside the larger-than-life hero. He is well equipped, after all to fight his own battles. __3__ But with common characters we recognise their short-comings,and want to come to their aid. When ‎ a character gets knocked down, which occurs frequently,we would like to help — from the safety of our easy chair. Maybe between us we can pull it off.‎ ‎__4__ First, common characters have not lost the childlike trait of wonder, the willingness to engage adventure. Often the characters of fantasy are children, since authors have found in children a universal, common human nature — curiosity to the adult world. The second reason for the use of a common character has to do with heroism. In literary history the hero has often been a figure who acts for us. __5__ The theme in fantasy literature is that anyone may be called on to become the hero.‎ A.Moreover, a story must move through a beginning, a middle and in the process it must move the reader.‎ B.We should enter it so that the story becomes ours.‎ C.He or she stands in our place in the face of danger.‎ D.In fact,we usually know who will win; we're just not certain how.‎ E.Story seeks to free the imagination, to allow it for a time to live in another world.‎ F.There are two other considerations that account for the trait of the common character.‎ G.The point of a fantasy is not to hand us tidy morals, but to provide us with growth by experience.‎ 答案:1-5 ABDFC Period3Using the language and writing ‎ Ⅰ.用所给动词的适当形式填空 ‎1.It's important that the patient ________(take) good care of.‎ ‎2.She looked as if she ________(make) of ice.‎ ‎3.The suggestion that students ________(learn) something practical is worth considering.‎ ‎4.He speaks to us as if he ________(be) there.‎ ‎5.Do you know the order that you ________(keep) watching.‎ ‎6.Without your help, we would not ________(make) such rapid progress.‎ ‎7.If only I ________(arrive) in time!‎ ‎8.I make a proposal that a meeting ________(hold) next week.‎ ‎9.It's time that you ________(leave) here.‎ ‎10.I wasn't there. Better still, perhaps, is the practice of reading it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion and once at the end, so the sound of the poem is the last thing one hears of it.‎ ‎ All discussions of poetry are, in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is, eventually, the most concrete “interpretation(解释)” of it, suggesting tone, rhymes, and meaning all at once. Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voice, on records or on films, is obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching cannot replace the student and teacher reading it or, best of all, reciting it.‎ ‎ I have come to think, in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than “analyzing” it and “exchanging of views”, if there isn't time for both. I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry and take it easy when reading a poem. Poetry is “a criticism of life”, and “a heightening(提升) of life”. It is “a most appropriate approach to the truth of feeling”, and it “can transform your life”. It also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature(文学) more central than it presently occupies.‎ ‎ I am not saying that every English teacher must try out poetry-teaching. Those who don't like it should not be forced to convey that negative feeling to anyone else. But those who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its essential nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it.‎ ‎1.To have a better understanding of a poem, one should ________.‎ ‎ A.discuss it with others ‎ B.analyze it by oneself ‎ C.copy it down in a notebook D.practise reading it aloud ‎2.Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a function of poetry?‎ ‎ A.Extending your life.‎ B.Changing your life.‎ ‎ C.Criticizing life. ‎ D.Heightening life.‎ ‎3.According to the writer, one of the purposes of teaching English is to get students ________.‎ ‎ A.to understand life B.to enjoy poetry ‎ C.to become teachers D.to become poets ‎ 4.What does the last sentence in the third paragraph imply?‎ A.More stress(强调) should be laid on the teaching of poetry.‎ B.Poetry is more important than any other subject.‎ C.One cannot enjoy life fully without a good understanding of poetry.‎ D.Poetry is the foundation of all language and literature courses.‎ 答案与解析:‎ ‎1.解析:根据第一段内容特别是第一句话“No poem should ever be discussed or‘analyzed’, until it has been read aloud by someone,a teacher or a student.” ‎ 答案:A ‎3. I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry and take it easy when reading a poem. A B William Shakespeare wrote about thirty-seven plays and a large number of poems in his life.‎ ‎ The play Hamlet is considered to be the summit(顶点) of Shakespeare's tragedies. It was written in 1601~1602 and first published in 1603.‎ ‎ The action of the play is laid in medieval(中世纪的) Denmark. The king suddenly died. One night Hamlet dreams of his father. He talks with his father, who tells his son he has been murdered by his brother Claudius. Hamlet hates the murderer very much and he decides to kill Claudius.‎ ‎ The struggle between Hamlet and Claudius is increasing. Claudius pays close attention to Hamlet who pretends to have gone mad.‎ ‎ To expose Claudius, Hamlet thinks of a plan: a group of actors are engaged to perform a play which recalls his father's murder. When Claudius appears deeply affected by the performance and leaves the hall before the play is ended, Hamlet knows he is right. To get rid of Hamlet, Claudius sends off Hamlet to England with his two men, who used to be Hamlet's friends and now are ordered to spy on him and kill him.‎ While at sea,Hamlet discovers a letter, in which Claudius orders the two men to kill him. I have just returned from one. It is a quarter to five in the morning: the sun has already climbed about the horizon; the birds are busy celebrating the new day and have eagerly been in search of food. But some of the guests have not yet left. They are still prolonging the night: dancing, singing, gossiping, putting off the unfortunate necessity of undertaking a day's work in the fields after a sleepless night.‎ Throughout most of her life, Bridget Mary, the bride, has been living in the small whitewashed thatched cottage I have just left. Twelve children have been brought up there but only two are still living at home. The eldest son, heir (继承人) to the small farm, is helping his father with the farm work (they employ no farm laborers); the youngest daughter is still at school. Two years ago, Bridget Mary went to England to take up domestic work in a hospital and it was while she was living there that she met her future husband, Terry. He himself is an Irishman who used to live in Dublin and now has a wellpaid job in a light engineering works in England. They got engaged and started saving. Now they are thinking of buying a small house near Terry's factory.‎ The wedding ceremony was performed in the church in the nearest town at half past eight yesterday morning. Another couple were being married at the same time. Nobody worried about the cost of the celebrations:four luxurious cars brought bride, bridegroom, family and friends home, and forty people were crowded into the tiled kitchen and the tiny livingroom, hung with framed school certificates and religious pictures. A big meal was given; the wedding cake was cut and toasts were drunk in whisky or sherry(葡萄酒). And while the remains of the feast were being cleared away and the rooms swept, the four cars set out again, taking the married couple and relations for a drive round the countryside.‎ ‎21. What makes it clear that this is a country wedding?‎ ‎ A. People are up so early.‎ ‎ B. Birds are singing.‎ ‎ C. The people's occupations.‎ ‎ D. The bride is one of a large family.‎ ‎22. No farm laborers are employed because ________.‎ ‎ A. they are not needed ‎ B. the child can help ‎ C. there are none available D. the family is too poor ‎23. The young couple will not live on the farm after their marriage because ________.‎ ‎ A. there is no room for them ‎ B. they have a house in England ‎ C. they are both employed elsewhere ‎ D. it's the bride's brother who will inherit(继承) the farm ‎24. Why were the guests taken for a ride round the countryside?‎ ‎ A. To give them an opportunity of seeing the surroundings.‎ ‎ B. To get them out of the way.‎ ‎ C. To enable the neighbours to see the married people.‎ ‎ D. As a way of passing the time.‎ 答案与解析:‎ ‎21. 第一段最后一句中“the unfortunate necessity of undertaking a day's work in the fields after a sleepless night”从人们的职业“在田里劳动”可知,这是一场农村婚礼。‎ 答案:C ‎22.解析:根据第二段中“The eldest son, heir to the small farm, is helping his father with the farm work (they employ no farm laborers)”可知没有雇用劳工的原因是大儿子可以帮忙。‎ 答案:B ‎23.解析:“Bridget Mary went to England to take up domestic work in a hospital...Terry. He himself is an Irishman who used to live in Dublin and now has a wellpaid job in a light engineering works in England.” 解析:根据短文最后一句“And while the remains of the feast were being cleared away and the rooms swept, the four cars set out again, taking the married couple and relations for a drive round the countryside.” B B It is difficult to imagine what life would be like without memory. The meanings of the thousands of everyday perceptions, the bases for the decisions we make, and the roots of our habits and skills are to be found in our past experiences, which are brought into the present by memory.‎ ‎ Memory can be defined as the capacity to keep information available for later use. It includes not only “remembering” things like arithmetic or historical facts ,but also involves any change in the way an animal typically behaves. Memory is involved when a rat gives up eating grain because he has sniffed (发觉) something suspicious in the grain pile. Memory is also involved when a sixyearold child learns to swing a baseball bat.‎ ‎ Memory exists not only in humans and animals but also in some physical objects and machines. Computers, for example, contain devices for strong data for later use. It is interesting to compare the memory storage capacity of a computer with that of a human being. The instantaccess memory of a large computer may hold up to 100,000 “word” —ready for instant use. An average US teenager probably recognises the meaning of about 100,000 words of English. However, this is but a fraction of the total amount of information which the teenager has stored. Consider, for example, the number of faces and places that the teenager can recognise on sight.‎ ‎ The use of words is the basis of the advanced problemsolving intelligence of human beings. A large part of a person's memory is in terms of words and combinations of words.‎ ‎25. According to the passage, memory is considered to be ________.‎ ‎ A. the basis for decision making and problem solving ‎ B. an ability to store experiences for future use ‎ C. an intelligence typically possessed by human beings ‎ D. the data mainly consisting of words and combinations of words ‎26. The comparison made between the memory capacity of a large computer and that of a human being shows that ________.‎ ‎ A. the computer's memory has a little capacity than a teenager's ‎ B. the computer's memory capacity is much smaller than an adult human being's ‎ C. the computer's memory capacity is much smaller even than a teenager's ‎ D. both A and B ‎27. The whole passage implies that ________.‎ ‎ A. only human beings have problemsolving intelligence ‎ B. a person's memory is different from a computer's in every respect ‎ C. animals are able to solve only very simple problems ‎ D. animals solve problems by instincts rather than intelligence ‎28. The topic of the passage is ________‎ ‎ A. What Would Life Be Like Without Memory?‎ ‎ B. Memory Is Of Vital Importance to Life ‎ C. How Is A person's Memory Different from An Animal's Or A Computer's ?‎ ‎ D. What Is Contained In Memory?‎ 答案与解析:‎ ‎25.解析:从第二段第一句“Memory can be defined as the capacity to keep information available for later use.” 解析:从第三段“The instantaccess memory of a large computer may hold up to 100,000 ‘word’—ready for instant use. An average US teenager probably recognises the meaning of about 100,000 words of English. However, this is but a fraction of the total amount of information which the teenager has stored.” 解析:文章第一句“It is difficult to imagine what life would be like without memory.” B C Online Degrees ‎ Today, you can earn a degree from a major university without ever having sat in one of their classrooms. Many colleges and universities are offering online courses and degree programs now.‎ ‎ Online Learning Programs With a computer and an Internet connection, you can earn a degree from home, work, or anywhere else for that matter. Online degree programs follow much the same routines as traditional learning, with a few twists. There are lectures, but they won't be in person. There are assignments (作业), but you won't hand them to your instructor. In most situations, you are free to “go to class” when it fits your schedule. If you get a phone call during class, you don't have to miss anything. If you get sick, you don't have to ask for someone's notes, and you just visit the lecture later.‎ You'll communicate with your instructor by e-mail, chat room and instant messaging. Your classroom will live in a special software program. Contrary to popular belief, you will have close contact with other students and the instructor.‎ Evaluating the Program There are a lot of questions to ask before you make your selection, such as:‎ How do students interact with each other?‎ ‎★Online programs can use chat rooms, instant messaging, teleconferencing, and video conferencing to communicate. The key is to find a program that has this interaction built into it and even requires it.‎ ‎★What kind of reputation does the school have?‎ It may seem simple-a good school will have a good online program. This reputation, however, may not be as straightforward as you think. It's not uncommon for a great school to have a weak program or two. So you'd better look at the overall quality of the school and make a judgment.‎ The Employers' View As more and more employees get online degrees and use them in the workforce(职场) , hiring managers will begin to feel more secure about the quality of education these people have.‎ ‎29.In which way is online education special?‎ A.If you get sick, you'll miss the lecture.‎ B.There are lectures, but you don't need to meet the lecturers.‎ C.If you get a phone call during class, you will miss something.‎ D.There are assignments, and you must hand them to your instructor.‎ ‎30.What is the most important part of online communication?‎ A.To use e-mails.‎ B.To look for a program with interaction.‎ C.To use chat rooms and instant messaging.‎ D.To use teleconferencing and video conferencing.‎ ‎31.For whom is the passage probably written?‎ A.College students.‎ B.Hiring managers.‎ C.Adult students.‎ D.High school students.‎ 答案与解析:‎ 文章介绍了现在流行的网上的学习课程,为了让很多成年人不要上大学就可以得到大学的学问,很多大学都设置网上课程。 从第二段“There are lectures, but they won't be in person.” 从倒数第三段“The key is to find a program that has this interaction built into it and even requires it.” 从文章最后一段“As more and more employees get online degrees and use them in the workforce”,可知这篇文章是为成年的学生写的。选C项。 C D I was born and raised in France into this way of life: French women don't get fat. There is a very good reason for that. Among the French middle and professional classes, it is totally unacceptable for a woman to be fat. Little girls, from a very young age, learn not to eat too much. It is mainly a class thing. When I read that “French women love to shop and prepare food”, I laugh. Many of us who work and have a family would rather put our feet up with a good book. To describe France as the country of slender women is a lie. A quick trip to Calais or any town of the industrial north is guaranteed to be an eye-opener.‎ ‎ Yes, at 44, I am still amazingly slim. This is hardly surprising; apart from the time when I was pregnant, I think I have been underweight for most of my life. There is no glory in this, since the truth must be said: I eat very little, not out of force, but mostly out of habit.‎ ‎ Yes, I shop and cook like a traditional Frenchwoman, but I don't think this is something you can easily pass on to British women. I tend to go to local shops every day and this is not something people are used to doing here, mainly because it takes a lot of time. I can afford to do so, since I work only on a part-time basis.‎ ‎ Of course, I still enjoy a good meal at a (French) restaurant, and I will have a glass of wine at dinner, but only one glass, since drinking other than with food is a social taboo for women in France. To be seen drunk for a woman is a social embarrassment from which she is not likely to recover.‎ ‎ Dear British friends, do not believe that patronizing(自认为高人一等) myth about French women. The thing is that many of us French women are probably unaware of how little we eat, simply because it has become second nature.‎ ‎32.The author's main purpose in writing the passage is to ________.‎ ‎ A.respond an article about French women ‎ B.comment an article about French women ‎ C.correct the opinion of an article about French women ‎ D.criticize the writer of an article about French women ‎33.Which of the following statements is NOT correct?‎ ‎ A.It's totally acceptable for a French woman to keep slender.‎ ‎ B.Most of French women in the industrial north are actually fat.‎ ‎ C.Most of French women are forced not to eat too much for figure.‎ ‎ D.A French women will feel embarrassed when seen to drink in public.‎ ‎34.Why did the author mention the fact that “French women don't get fat”?‎ A.To point out a fact.‎ B.To give an argumentative topic.‎ C.To support her opinion. ‎ D.To tell her own experience.‎ ‎35.What is the conclusion of the author in this passage?‎ A.French women love to shop and prepare food.‎ B.French women don't get fat because they eat less from a very young age.‎ C.French women aren't used to going shopping, not to speak of preparing food.‎ D.French women spend much less time shopping and preparing food than British women.‎ 答案与解析:‎ ‎32. 从第一段的“When I read that‘French women love to shop and prepare food’,I laugh.” ‎ 答案:A ‎33. 第二段的“not out of force, but mostly out of habit”指明C(受迫而为之)不对。 ‎ How to teach kids responsibility ‎ We'd all like our kids to develop into responsible people.
