A Perfect Holiday Hostess Gifts You Can Choose Looking for a thoughtful hostess gift that’s more personal than a bottle of red wine? Any host on your “nice” list would be thrilled to receive one of these gifts. Every product is independently selected by our editors. Aura Digital Frame Sharing photos of the party with the host by text is nice, but they end up “lost” with the hundreds of other photos on their phone. Solve that problem with an Aura Digital Frame, where photos can be shared directly to the frame via Wi-Fi. If you’re being hosted for a weekend or longer, this is a thoughtful way to say “thank you.” Jen’s Wreaths Fir Christmas Wreath Nothing says “thank you for inviting us” quite like a fragrant holiday wreath(花冠) arriving at your host’s front door. With this gift, include a note saying you are looking forward to the event. Complete with red berries and decorative bows and this smells like the holidays. Stargazer Barn Deck the Halls Bouquet Avoid showing up with anther “to-do” for the already harried host. Being already tired and busy with flowers as guests are arriving can be tricky. Instead, send flowers, like this Stargazer Barn Deck The Halls Bouquet the day after. Include a simple expression of appreciation along the lines of “thanks for having us, we had a lovely time”. Original Wine Glass Markers Any host would appreciate a set of pens that write on glass. Original wine glass markers are perfect for marking wine glasses with a guest’s name. The ink dries quickly, which is easily removed with soap and water. These would also make a perfect “thanks” gift. 1. Which gift can share the memory of good times to the host? A. Aura Digital Frame B. Jen’s Wreaths Fir Christmas Wreath C. Stargazer Barn Deck the Halls Bouquet D. Original Wine Glass Markers 2. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “harried”? A. Hurried B. Delighted C. Separated D. Exhausted 3. What do the four gifts have in common? A. They can help store precious moments B. B. They can be used as “thank you” gifts C. They can help decorate homes of hosts D. D. They can be used to mark the bottles B Maybe it's because it was our first purchase as homeowners. The salesman must have spotted just how green we were, so he began persuading. And soon he led us to a classic leather chair. All these years later, I remember he used words like rich and handsome, the thing every living room needed. We believed him. So we bought that chair — just less than $100, a great deal in the 1970s for a young couple! How we loved that chair! It always occupied a place of honor in our various living rooms, moving with us from our first tiny house to our beloved new house. Somehow, conversations were better on that chair, and life was more fun around it. Three daughters spilled their secrets on it. Old friends seemed to be attracted by it on those wonderful occasions. Crazy as it sounds, that leather chair seemed to have — well, powers. All for good. At first, we didn't really care that the leather was showing signs of wear or that it had lost its sheen ( 光 泽 ). But in our most recent move, when the chair was moved in our new living room, it suddenly looked terribly lonely sitting close to newly painted walls and a couple of shiny new tables. My husband and I tried but still we couldn't ignore the rough spots. Even our adult kids raised eyebrows, urging us to at least remove the chair to some dark corner of the room. Neither of us could imagine such a retirement for it. So we had an inspired idea. We'd call in an upholsterer (修理工) to give our old chair a whole new life. It certainly doesn't look new, but its seat and back are shining, and some of its deeper wrinkles have lightened. Best of all, it's back in the living room, looking like a wise old friend to the furniture around it. And, yes, there it will stay. Because some things, like some people, just deserve a happy old age. 1. How did the salesman persuade the author into buying the chair? A. By thinking highly of the author. B. By saying that the author was green. C. By describing how great the chair was. D. By comparing the chair with others. 2. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about? A. Sweet memories with the chair. B. Various functions of the chair. C. People's comments on the chair. D. Family activities and parties of friends. 3. Why did the author finally decide to repair the chair? A. Because he was persuaded by Joe. B. Because he didn't have enough money. C. Because it showed signs of hardness. D. Because it couldn't match his new house. 4. What can we learn from the text? A. East or west, home is best. B. From saving comes having. C. It is never too late to mend. D. Old friends and wine are best. C With Christmas approaching, many Americans are busy preparing lists of what to give friends or loved ones for the holiday. This holiday season, people will be able to buy a cargo-carrying robot that follows them around like a dog. But it is unclear if the device will be a popular gift. Created by an Italian company—the Piaggio Group, Gita, is going on sale for $3250. Like the name, which means “a short, pleasurable trip” in Italian, the robotic servant is for short trips out and about for a maximum of four hours. It’s similar to those robotic smart suitcases that trail behind you at the airport, but with an entirely different look. Just imagine a super sized Tide Pod(汰渍洗衣球) on wheels but in orange, which is the flagship color of Gita, and they are available in other colors. Operating Gita is simple. You just press one button to turn it on, one button for the cameras to scan your legs, and you’re off. It actually does a pretty good job of following you and recognizing when you change direction. But it only operates best on hard surfaces, like sidewalks and paths. Besides, it can’t go upstairs. J. P Gownder, principal analyst at Forrester Research, expressed concerns about Gita. “That’s a lot of money for what is in effect just a cargo-carrying robot,” he said. In fact, anyone who is simply looking to pull home products without heavy lifting can find durable wagons for less than $100. Consumer-focused personal robots have a spotty history. In 2017, Jibo amazed the world as the first social robot for the home but it ended as a failure soon after. Whether the device will be a success is not yet clear. Tech industry experts are already saying Gita will fail unless the company finds a more useful purpose. Examples include carrying tools around hospitals, factory floors or places where products are stored. 1. What can we infer about Gita from Paragraph 2? A. It is priced low B. It has a cute appearance C. It has numerous functions D. It works without recharging 2. What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 5? A. Add some back ground information. B. Summarize the previous paragraphs C. Introduce the topic of the passage. D. Provide his personal view on robots 1. What is the experts' attitude to the future of the future of the Gita? A. positive B. indifferent C. negative D. uncaring 2. Where is the text most likely from? A. A science fiction B. A technology magazine C. A travel brochure D. A geography textbook D Roughly half of Americans drink coffee every day. Rarely do they think much about the people half a world away who picked the beans. "The work of picking coffee is demanding, literally back-breaking work,” explains Janet Jarman, an American photographer who's been documenting coffee workers around the world for almost two decades. On a typical coffee plantation in Mexico Nicaragua, and many of the other countries where the crop is produced, the work begins before sunrise. Coffee pickers rise early to traverse(穿越) steep hillsides where the coffee plants grow and then spend up to 10 hours collecting the red cherries from which beans will later be extracted. Pickers can also encounter serious health dangers: for instance, the mosquitoes in these areas have been known to carry diseases like dengue or even Zika. Coffee labor is often performed by migrants who travel from poorer parts of the continent to find work on the plantations. The harvesting period lasts from roughly November to February, so workers either leave their homes for many months at a time or take their entire families with them. They eat and sleep on the estates(私有土地 ), oftentimes in dirty conditions. One plantation can employ over 600 workers at the height of harvest, though sizes vary. Workers' ages too, span a very wide range: Jarman met men in their 60s doing the taxing work of collecting the fruit and carrying it back painfully. It also wasn’t uncommon to see parents and children doing the same work together. Despite all the struggle these workers face, a lot of people took great pride in their craft, particularly those who ran and worked smaller farms. A lot of these people consider growing coffee to be a true art. 1. Americans know little about . A. how to drink coffee. B. the culture of coffee. C. coffee planting on farms. D. the work of picking coffee. 2. What does the author think of coffee pickers? A. They suffer a lot. B. They have a sense of family. C. They are simple and hardworking. D. They aren't satisfied with their work. 3. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about? A. What a coffee labor is. B .Where the coffee laborers come from C. How long and hard pickers work. D. What causes damage to coffee pickers. 4. What can be the best title for the text? A Coffee drinking and health B. Blood, sweat and coffee C. Coffee: farmer's wisdom D. Little efforts make a difference 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Overthinking the Small Stuff? How many decisions have you made over the last day, week... month? Drive or Uber? Suit or no suit? Italian or Thai? iPhone or Huawei? While today’s freedom of choice has obvious benefits, the constant pressure to make perfect choices can often rob our freedom, heighten our anxiety and lower our productivity. 16 For starters, trying to perfect every single decision is a 'mission impossible,' making it pretty in vain. 17 And finally, research shows that trying to nail every decision reduces our ability to perform at our best and make great decisions about the things that really matter. The irony is that people who try to make the perfect decision every time tend to suffer more anxiety about their decisions, feel less satisfied with them afterward and, unsurprisingly, are less productive than people who just go with ‘good enough’. “The habit of aiming for the best possible option every time actually robs people of satisfaction and effectiveness,” wrote Barry Schwartz on the Paradox of Choice. 18 However, they're generally less happy about what they eventually decide upon. Better than trying to maximize every choice is to make a ‘good enough’ choice that meets a basic level of satisfaction. So you didn’t get the best possible hotel at the best possible price? Move on. So the shade of yellow you chose to paint the sunroom was a little dark? Again, move on! 19 20 The reason is that they aren’t wasting precious time and energy on decisions that don’t really matter. So as you think about all the decisions you have to make in the day or month ahead, focus your precious time, talents and attention on the things that truly matter. A. There are a few reasons for this. B. But some researchers do not agree with it. C. Secondly, it can be mentally and emotionally exhausting. D. Much more important issues are waiting for your attention. E. Besides that, every decision you make may disappoint you. F. Such ‘maximizers,' as Schwartz calls them, spend more time and energy reaching a decision. G. Schwartz found that 'satisficers' who live by the ‘good enough’ rule actually get more done. 第二部分 语言运用(共两节,满分 30 分) 第一节(共 15 小题;每小题 1 分,满分 15 分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中选出最佳选项。 My father always told me: “All work is noble.” Thanks to his effort, I was able to go to an art college. We were taking a mini vacation together and couldn’t have been more excited. We wanted to get there the day before the conference and settle into our hotel room. The weather forecast was predicting high winds and rain, so we decided to take an early morning train and then connect with a city bus to our hotel. We arrived early enough to enjoy breakfast in the hotel. We even had the good fortune to be able to get our room. All was going well. We were off to a perfect start. Once in our room, the terrible storm hit the earth! The wind and rain made staying in the only sensible option. As lunchtime approached, we decided to try a phone app that would bring almost any restaurant’s food to us. We decided on hamburgers from a well-known chain. The food-delivery app promised a 45-minute wait time. Forty-five minutes came and went, then an hour, and then an hour and a half. After two hours, I called the restaurant. They explained that our hamburgers were under a heat lamp the entire time, just waiting for the driver. We canceled the order and decided to go out in an Uber car to continue our quest for hamburgers. The front-desk manager suggested a restaurant that had great hamburgers. So we took the Uber car and set off. But when we arrived at the restaurant, we found it was closed due to the bad weather. And our car had already left. We stood outside the building on that miserably cold and wet day, trying to decide what to do next. Of course, the solution was easy: Just order another Uber car. I began digging in my purse for my phone, but it wasn’t there! Paragraph 1: I realized I had left it in the Uber car. Paragraph 2: As we pulled up in front of the hotel, I suddenly saw our first Uber car. 【参考答案】 阅读理解 ADB CADD BACB DACB 七选五 ACFDG 完形填空 BAADC DABAD CCACB 36. has been selected 37. where 38. has 39. resources 40. briefly 41. a 42. releasing 43. to rebuild 44. valuable 45. of Dear Chris, Knowing that you have been concerned about the protection of our environment, I am delighted to tell you there is a speech entitled “Start from ourselves to protect our earth”.
