The practice of swapping fashions has recently been attracting attention worldwide, particularly in Europe and the United States. This is an activity aimed at making more effective use of resources by providing a platform for people to exchange free of charge those fashion items in their closets that they don’t use anymore. In London, fashion swap events sponsored by the credit card company VISA focus on the swapping of specific brands. Japan’s first major fashion swap event, “xChange,” was held in September 2007 in Tokyo. The xChange event is designed to exchange not only fishing items but also information and feelings from the owners of the clothes, using what is called an “episode tag.” Participants put tags on each of the items they bring and write their name and a bride episode about the items. For example, a tag of a white jacket read, “This is a gift from a friend, but it’s just not my style.” On a tag attached to a pair of red shoes, a person wrote. “These don’t fit me anymore. I hope someone who loves red can use them.” Just as shoppers check price tags, some people check the episode tags before making a selection, imagining who used to wear the item. The episode tags make people aware of the human connection by exchanging goods. Many participants say things like, “I’m very lucky to get such lovely clothes for free,” and “I was happy to see someone try on and choose what I brought here.” Unwanted clothes for one person can be new and exciting for someone else. Besides, xChange achieves close to a 100-percent reuse rate by donating leftover clothes to companies that reuse or recycle secondhand clothing. Anything they cannot use, they then donate to developing countries or reuse them as rags. Since 2007, the xChange event has been held every two or three months in a different region of Japan, always attracting many participants. This success is probably because it is an active event that gives participants opportunities to enjoy fashion without increasing the impact on the environment. 2 1. They are moving from the peaceful hills, mountains, fields, rivers and streams of the countryside to the busy world of streets, buildings, traffic and crowds. This movement from rural areas to urban areas has been going on for over two hundred years. In many countries, the main reason people come to live in towns and cities is work. After one or two large factories have been built in or near a town, people come to find work, and soon an industrial area begins to grow. There is usually a residential area nearby, too. The families of these workers need schools, hospitals and shops, so many people come to live in the area to provide these services and a city grows. In every major city in the world, there is a business district where the big companies have their main offices. In the United States, this area is usually in the city center downtown. It is here that you can see many huge skyscrapers and office blocks. The people who work here often travel a long way to work each day. Many of them live in the suburbs of the city, far away from the industrial area and the city center. Some suburbs are very pleasant, with nice house and big gardens. There are usually parks for children to play in and large department stores where you can buy all you need. But what is the future of the big cities? Will they continue to get bigger and bigger? Perhaps not. Some major cities have actually become smaller in the last 4 ten years, and it is quite possible that one day we will see people moving out of the major cities and back into smaller towns and villages. 12. A. people can speak a second language by learning a 12-week Linguaphone course B. Linguaphone will give free courses to second language learners C. second language learners are to attend courses at Linguaphone Language Centre D. second language learners can teach themselves by using Linguaphone materials 答案解析:答案为 D。 由第二段 “Linguaphone will provide you with everything you need to learn at your own pace, where and when you choose. And, although you aren’t in a classroom, you certainly won’t be left all alone .” 尽管第一段最后一句话 “Study as little as half an hour a day and in twelve weeks you could be talking confidently in the language of your choice.” 2.Before a learner wants to take a Linguaphone course , he has to . A. write to the Linguaphone Centre first B. fill out a coupon and post it to Linguaphone C. pay for a cassette player D. know the details of the information pack 答案解析: 答案为 B。 由文章第三段 “…you can also receive a Linguaphone Personal Stereo Cassette Player completely free.”和最后一段最后一句 话 “To receive your cassette and information pack, return the coupon below or call us today.” 7 3.What guarantee does Linguaphone give ? A. Learners can master another language in 14 days. B. Learners can have a free trial learning for 14 days. C. Learners can keep the Linguaphone pack for 14 days. D. Learners can get back their money after 14 days of learning. 由文章倒数第二段 “…and tells you how you can try a course without risking a penny , with our 14-day money-back guarantee.” B, 4.The purpose of the ad is to . A. offer Linguaphone cassettes to learners B. offer Linguaphone courses free C. give details of their guarantees D. introduce and sell Linguaphone products 答案解析:答案为 D。 Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. When my old dog developed major health problems, I knew that watching him fail would be painful, but I wasn’t prepared for the powerful lessons he’d offer in the last year of his life. Chance was 14 when the problems started. First, he developed a cancer that left him whistling for breath. Then came cataracts (白内障) in both eyes, arthritis (关 节炎) in his legs, and a series of ministrokes (小中风) that threw off his balance. Any one of these misfortunes would have left me begging for relief, but Chance became 8 calmer as the disabilities piled up. When leg pain left him frozen on the floor, unable to rise for a quick pat as I came home, he didn’t complain. He just lay there patiently, signaling me with his hammering tail, each movement spelling out the value of waiting for the things you want. When his cataracts made steering impossible after dark, he’d stand calmly until I could guide him inside, proving how easy it is to find happiness if you let go of your pride and insecurities and learn to lean on those who love you. When ministrokes had him walk unsteadily like a drunk, he taught the value of persistence. For days after each attack, he’d fall as he moved about. Yet again and again he’d try to walk, each day moving a few more steps until finally he was able to get outside and back by himself. There were lessons in so much of what he did, but the key one surely was the importance of obtaining all the joy possible from each experience whether it’s a day lazing under a warm sun or a few minutes appreciating a favorite meal. For most of our life together, Chance was always rushing ahead, searching out new adventures, then circling back to let me know what lay around the next bend. As an old dog, he did the same thing, using his attitude, instead of his once-fast legs, to show the way. 66. Chance suffered very much from all the diseases he had except for ______. A. having problem with breath B. walking around awkwardly C. having trouble drinking D. losing his eyesight in darkness 67. ______ is the most important lesson the author learned from Chance. A. Living in the present and enjoying what we have B. Learning to depend on those who we love and trust C. That we should expect good things to happen patiently D. That we should persevere in what we believe is worth trying 9 68. It is implied in the passage that ______. A. people might suffer from different diseases when they grow old B. people could face aging with courage and dignity C. pets would become calmer for lack of energy in their last days D. pets and masters should stick together helping each other in difficulty 69.
